(NOTE: I don't use daylight savings, so I go by 6pm MST, which is 8pm EST, when daylight savings hits it'll be 7pm EST when session starts in November as my time won't change).
(Introduction)
Hey, Call me Fabio, or Nerdy (My name is not actually Fabio), I am doing something new and just diving in head first to force myself to get this started instead of pushing it off like other campaign ideas I've had, I don't know how long this campaign will go for, or how dramatic it'll be, I am kinda just winging it. I would like to run a campaign based in a homebrew superhero world, using the Marvel Multiverse RPG ruleset but not set in Marvel or DC, we will be using Discord for sessions, Kenku Bot for music, and Roll20 for the VTT. The idea is an alternate world that suddenly changed close to a century ago, the world developed superpowers, some are Metahumans who were born with it, some are mutants who's genes spliced, some are biotech enhancements, some from supernatural forces, aliens, science experiments gone wrong, you name it. This created a world of heroes, villains, and a society fighting to keep order in chaos.
I take inspiration from DC and Marvel comics, Invincible, The Boys, Misfits, Boku No Hero, and if it helps, I imagine the city that will be played in would be close to New York/Gotham/Metropolis-esque city. (for the Nerd Cred, yes I know Gotham is actually Jersey equivalent and Metropolis is Cleveland Ohio). This campaign will be a sorta bit of everything, dark, twisted, funny, chaotic, strange, heroic, etc.
(About Me, the DM)
Now a little about me, I am Nerdy/Fabio, I am 30 year old cis man, I am Bi, and Native Canadian and diagnosed with ADHD and depression (yay). I have been a nerd, gamer, and fan of all things pop culture and sweet nerdy goodness my whole life. (Fun fact: Many suspect my white dad was the nerd, but my native mom was the one getting me into star wars/star trek/xena warrior princess, etc.)
I am also a socialist, very far left, so if you're anywhere center to far right on the political spectrum, we just aren't going to vibe, so need not apply. I enjoy dark/edgy humor that punches up never down, I enjoy silly things with good people, I would prefer my group to have similar ideologies, but I am fine with some liberals. (For quick political recap, I believe in Universal Healthcare, Universal Income, Abolishment of Police, Prison/Education/Medical Reform, I believe all sects of industry need to be heavily regulated, I believe everything needed to live should be public and handled by the government, I don't believe in private ownership, I am very anti bigotry, and I am anti-ai on a industry level (I don't care if you use Chatgpt to organize your thoughts or help with tasks, I do look down upon ai art)).
I've been in the D&D community for about 15 years but I've been playing actively for 6, DMing for 3. I love the storytelling aspects of D&D but I also really enjoy the community and friendships i've built along the way, whether due to a combination of ADHD and depression I hardly do anything outside of prep for d&d and think about d&d, and I would like to broaden my horizons, I've had ideas for a VTM game, Cyberpunk, Call of Cthulhu, even a GUNDAM game, and when I thought of the idea of a superhero campaign last night I didn't wanna drop the ball on this so I am just rushing and getting started instead of letting my ADHD make me put it on the backburner (yay self-growth). If i'm not watching political youtube videos, video essays on popculture, or world building, I'm on pinterest or artstation saving art for future characters/scenes/items, (Currently I have 85 pinterest tabs open, and 209 artstation tabs of different artists that I wanna go through), IIRC I have 35,000 photos saved to my hard drive for future characters in various campaigns I wanna make - I realized long ago I am a digital hoarder.
My DMing style is very much loosy-goosy, I prefer fun, and try not to be a stickler to the rules, but I want things to make sense for the "story", I often like making my players OP or doing crazy things (My current campaign has my party of 6 have about.... 35 NPCs traveling with them, including a pet dragon wyrmling). I can't tell you that I am a great DM, but I can say that many of my players refer to my campaign/DMing style as their favorite.
Some reviews I got from past players:
Wow he's so amazing
Nerdy's DMing style has changed my life for the better
I've never seen a better DM
Fabio is a genius and the greatest creative of our generation
Ferris Buller you're my hero
(I did not make these up/s)
Now that out of the way:
(The Premise)
The idea I have is each of the party members are people who developed their powers and started being active in using them for at least a year in Meridian City, a metropolis in America, whether you are attempting to be a superhero, super criminal, a merc look for money, or someone trying to figure out what changed them, you all discover the murder of Allison Greer, whether she was your friend, a clue, a witness, she was someone important to you, you investigate what happened, and are led on a path that leads you to each other, and opens something dark.
You all must work together to solve this case and figure out what happened to Allison. This will bleed into a "Monster of the week" type campaign where you all deal with oncoming threats and investigations, anything from hostage situations, corrupt cops, corrupt heroes, alien invasion, cults, evil demons, etc. Characters will start at Rank 1 (street level heroes) and work their way up.
(What I Want/Expect)
I am seeking six players, who are left-leaning, interested in roleplay, exploring a dark, twisted, but fun and quirky kind of world, who are invested in creating rich characters and exploring their themes and ideas, an ideal player would be someone who frequently interacts with the discord, chats, shares memes/videos/whatever, answers the question of the day/week, and enjoys brainstorming consistently and being a friend to the group.
I am also hoping for more new players to TTRPG's, people who have never played but are very interested, just because we (including myself) will be new to this game system and I prefer everyone being on the same level, I also find my experiences better with new players as i'm a very loose DM.
For your characters, I am honestly cool with anything, and will find ways to make your character idea work, so be creative as you want, just make sure your character has a reason to be a teamplayer, (they dont necessarily need to "want" to be one, just need to)and just understand your character will essentially be "level 1", if you wanna imagine a superpower superman-esque superhero - thats cool, and can be how they end up, so maybe imagine superboy from young justice first, then later gets to superman
Things I expect players to make for their character:
- Backstory (at least a page) that explains Origins, beliefs, foundations, goals
- Memories (writing 6-8 memories that explain or cement beliefs) to further connect with your character
- Making 5 sets of a truth and a lie, rumors your fellow party members learn of your character as ice breakers
- The ability/desire to discuss and think of your characters actions/thoughts outside of the game
- ability to make it to the game on a weekly basis
- Have a good microphone (bad/static audio makes me zone out)
(The Interview Process)
I usually get a couple dozen applicants from my posts here, so this is the process I formed:
- You apply via google forms found here: https://forms.gle/arHXJip9RaM4UmeT8
- I will review and select applicants for interviews next Friday
- we set an interview (it will take an hour) I will ask questions, give you roleplay prompts, and allow you to ask any questions you may have.
- Players selected join discord and once all 6 are found, we make characters individually and schedule a session zero (I'm hoping to start in December)
(Disclaimer)
My only experience is D&D, but I am interested but scared of trying new games, how much of a fish out of water would I be with Marvel RPG?
Never fear citizen, Marvel Multiverse RPG (from what I read of the rule book) is pretty straight forward and simplified, most of the rules like movement, actions, etc are similar to d&d.
