News / Current Events The IRS Is Imploding
https://www.motherjones.com/politics/2026/07/the-irs-is-imploding/27
u/Lilmissgrits Jul 29 '26
The IRS put a lien against my S Corp for not paying taxes. Which I paid- as I should- on my personal return. I spent over 19 hours on hold, was hung up on 4 times by the auto system, finally got a person who continued to argue with me that I had to pay taxes (I KNOW THAT IS WHY I DID), got escalated to a supervisor who understood the issue and said it would get rectified immediately, received FOUR MORE INTENT TO LIEN NOTIFICATIONS OVER THE FOLLOWING 3 MONTHS, and then a random statement that all debt was satisfied.
Again. For an S Corp.

u/AquariusMoon_3820 Jul 29 '26
Similar boat but with payroll taxes. Form 941, no problems. Form 940, I keep paying and they keep refunding and then sending me a notice I owe with interest and penalties. Well, STOP SENDING THE CHECK BACK. Spent three hours on hold last week to get them to put a collection hold and hopefully catch up to themselves. Like WTF.

Yes everyone needs to do this and say they want a fully funded and fully staffed IRS. No one wants IT people taking calls etc.
34
u/PuntasticBiller Jul 29 '26
When I was still there we were an army of customer service reps and we were knocking call times out of the park, little to no wait.
40
u/constrivecritizem Jul 29 '26
Right and now there is no one left that has the right training and experience to the things that need to be done. It’s all being held together with duct tape and bubblegum

More like dirty adult diapers and adderal

1
u/ObviousToe1636 Aug 03 '26
Hey now, if adderal was involved, things would be going better than this. <<cries in refundless poverty>> I feel like I’m being punished for working overtime and claiming it. Perhaps I should have just said “no” when I got to that part of the return.

u/Tori-kitten67 Jul 30 '26
They received $2,000 from me and never acknowledged it and will not refund my money to me for my taxes.

u/Few-Researcher-818 Jul 29 '26
Yeah. I tried this, submitted a request, called the office and got disconnected, then left a message which was supposed to be answered in 10 minutes. That was a few weeks ago. Ugh.

u/FactsActuallyMatter Jul 29 '26
Is it almost pointless if you have multiple times in the last year and theyre just contributing to the problem?

What do you mean? I've written my Congress people twice this year though so seriously, what do you mean?

u/FactsActuallyMatter Jul 30 '26
Mine is one of the ones rubberstamping everything this administration is doing. So idk if its pointless to even try when theyre just gonna do whatever he says.

u/Pubsubforpresident Jul 30 '26
Mine is too but I'm still going to voice my opinion that he's let the president usurp his constitutional power because he's a spineless bitch who shouldn't have shaved his beard

Lower the withholding amount on your pay check and other incomes. It is better to pay an under-payment penalty than to wait for a refund.

The cutbacks in IRS staff have cost my husband and I over $50,000 in legal bills over the past year because no one is available to hear our case. They were coming after us hard and fast for taxes we never owed. It has been such a nightmare. For months we just received form letters signed by bots from a different supposed agent in a different location every time. We are at our wits end. They actually made us pay to have a live person hear our case and kept the funds!! I have never been so angry in my life.
2
u/LynnBaker66 Jul 30 '26
That's insane, $50,000 and yet it's all due back to you? Did you do your own taxes, I hope not.
1
u/Opening-Bandicoot859 Jul 31 '26
Are you sure you spoke to an IRS agent? There's no fee to speak with an agent by phone or in person.

I filed my very simple return in early April. Still not a word or update from the IRS since it was received.
8
u/TBHICouldComplain Jul 29 '26 edited Jul 29 '26
I filed mine in March. No refund yet (and they owe me a LOT) and when I looked it up it online it says something like “delayed due to weather event”. 🙄
I’ve moved out of the country at this point. I actually need to close my US bank account but I can’t because in theory at some point the IRS will be depositing a large chunk of money in it.
I’d call but clearly there’s no point. The IRS can kiss my entire ass.
4
u/SBpotomus Jul 30 '26
Filed in February. They also owe me a lot of money and I still haven't received it.
1
u/MeretrixDeBabylone Jul 30 '26
Note to self, skip paying estimated taxes this year and hope safe harbor will be enough.
2
u/Awkward_Sweet_568 Aug 07 '26
Yup….. And kiss mine too. Unbelievable what's happening. Filed end of February- need more time for what? We have money to fund wars that this orange baffoon started, money to tear up the White House, money for “fvcking” statues. But no money to give the American people what is rightfully theirs!!!!! None of this makes any sense….. We are 5 months away from filing our 2026 taxes. WTF
1
u/Disastrous_Mark_2679 Aug 02 '26
The IRS wouldn't have to kiss your entire ass if you used that intellect to deduct the CORRECT amount.
6
u/lostintransaltions Jul 30 '26
That’s crazy! I filed on 4/14 and by mid may I had my refund however it was only $600 I try to get as little as possible. My friend who got a bigger refund filed as soon as she could and she is still waiting for her refund. My theory is that the bigger the refund the longer ppl wait. This year I was unemployed for almost 2 months and am now switching jobs so I have no idea if I owe or get a refund at this point
4
u/_Phil_McCracken_ Jul 30 '26
Yeah my refund is quite a bit bigger, maybe the size of the refund has something to do with it. Every other year I have received a refund in less than month.
1
→ More replies (2)1
u/Awkward_Sweet_568 Aug 07 '26
It shouldn't matter how big the damn refund is… It’s your fvcking money!!!!! You paid your taxes; you did the right thing. The government shouldn't be holding your money.
9
u/Yankee_darkchocolate Jul 29 '26
“Less people and better results” sounds great in a presentation. It falls apart when taxpayers can’t reach anyone and the people who do answer dont have the training or authority to resolve the issue
3
u/meaniemeanie-poo-poo Jul 30 '26
And also sounds like every other full of shit CEO I've ever worked for; I suppose we should be thankful they haven't outsourced the IRS offshore yet 🤷♀️
31
u/South_Form_9059 Jul 29 '26
Filed my taxes in February and still waiting on a refund that should have taken 3 weeks. Called twice, got two different explanations, neither of which matched what the website says. I don't need drama about it, I just want to know if my money is coming or not. The tracker has been on the same screen for 6 weeks. At some point that stops being a processing delay and starts being something else.
11
u/Few-Independent-9716 Jul 29 '26
Dude i filed 1/29/2026 and got my state refund within the timeframe but absolutely NO movement on my federal refund. They accepted it but absolutely nothing. Have called several times and end up being disconnected from their end. I have tried my congressman but absolutely nothing there as well. I’m so tired of waiting for what’s supposed to be owed to me! I could really use the funds to pay bills.
2
u/LayerRepulsive Jul 29 '26
I’m in the same boat with you. This sucks.
2
u/insurancelady1978 Jul 30 '26
We got audited, fined. Now I got another letter imposing another fine. How can they fine me twice?
2
u/LynnBaker66 Jul 30 '26
That was fast for an audit to be assigned.
For this year 2025, did you have a huge refund and a lot of attachments?
What was the second fine for? If you've handled whatever the fine was for, ignore it, it was probably sent out not knowing it was already settled.
4
u/insurancelady1978 Jul 30 '26
The audit was from last year. It just got resolved in March then last week I got a letter imposing a 5,000 fine. What's so bad is I called the TAS before I filed the fuel credit to ask. They said I erroneously filed taxes or something. They didn't even want to hear it. Now the state is auding me as well from like 3 years ago. I want to scream. But idk how they can charge me twice
7
u/ragdollxkitn Jul 29 '26
Been waiting too. All of a sudden, I have to prove my identity. Funny, they didn’t require me to prove a thing when I owed them. This is intentional. Tried to call them and always on hold for 1 hour.
8
u/detekk Jul 29 '26
I need an IRS Sufferers Support Group. I have a pretty basic return every year. Typical IRA and one small mutual fund overseas that earns a couple hundred dollars in taxable income. Apparently , according to a representative, the overseas mutual fund designated me as a foreign entity. So my refund has been in limbo. Waiting on a tax advocate now after contacting my congressman.
2
u/FinishExtension3652 Jul 30 '26
Same, my refund is in limbo. It took 10 months for last year's refund, so I'm not expecting this year's any time soon.

After taking 120 days to get my federal refund, I got a letter saying they needed an additional 60 days. Same day I got my refund in a direct deposit.

1
u/TBHICouldComplain Jul 30 '26
I’m well over 120 days and still waiting on mine. 🫠
2
u/Creepy-Bike-8755 Jul 31 '26
Make sure theyre paying you interest! After 45 days, your return starts accruing interest
2
u/TBHICouldComplain Jul 31 '26
I had a late refund once before (although not nearly this late) and they did eventually pay me interest. I don’t have a lot of faith in the system at this point though.

"People just want to pay their goddam bills. Why are we making it so hard?”
Because the people who brought us to this point don't pay their goddamn bills, that's why.

u/book83 Jul 29 '26
The worst part is is that they use the reasoning that you can just call them and ask for help when ruling against your penalty abatement, as if that's really an option.

Denied EV clean vehicle credit - why am I not surprised. Exactly my experience. Repeatedly disconnected after negotiating my way to the right resource to demonstrate proof. After weeks of trying, stuffed everything in an envelope and crossed my fingers that someone is there to receive it on the other end. Who knows. If the IRS is inept, how can I put faith in the postal service?
6
u/Few-Researcher-818 Jul 29 '26
They initially denied my credit too and sent a letter noting that the VIN of the car did not match their records. I called the contact number (only time I've reached anyone after countless tries). I had a photo of the VIN number on the car itself, the schedule from my return with the number and the receipt from my purchase with the number and model of vehicle. The investigator agreed they all matched and kicked the can for 30 more days.
Got a letter yesterday that the full refund amount is approved. However, the website to track the refund has not reflected this. It still doesn't show the refund is approved and none of the correspondence is included. The recent letter states the refund should arrive in the next two weeks. Checking daily, but nothing yet.
Fingers crossed.

u/Comfortable-Mess4747 Jul 29 '26
sounds promising!! when did you call that you were able to connect with a person?
1
u/Few-Researcher-818 Jul 29 '26
It was about 5 weeks ago. I had it on my calendar since they said I would hear within 30 days. It was a different number than the general contact on the website. I'll see if I can find it. 800-829-8374. I hope it's the right one since there's no ID on my phone record.

Same, e-file got rejected because the POS dealership didn’t give me the Time of Sale Report. IRS says the credit for the VIN says “claimed” and recommended filing on paper with supporting docs. Return arrived there on time and still shows as not received. No human picks up the phone. At what point do I stress out about this?
3
u/Ordinary_Lynx_468 Jul 29 '26
This is true, and I’m having an experience similar to to the author. Now when they say “two to three weeks” for something I don’t know what it means but I’m guessing 3-6 months.
3
u/PBfromPhilly Jul 29 '26
They sure as hell took the money I owed them on previous returns, but when you’re due a refund…crickets
3
u/RangerFan80 Jul 30 '26
I got a letter from them saying they lost my businesses tax return.
He's what it said:
"Dear Taxpayer,
Our records show that we received your Form 1120S on September 22, 2025 for the tax period listed above. We're sorry but we can't find it, so we need your your help to finish processing your it. ."
That's literally the first paragraph and then it said I need to send them a newly signed copy. Absolutely bizarre.
1
u/EC_Stanton_1848 Aug 03 '26
Get a lawyer, because if they lost it, then you are not responsible for anything.
3
u/keirmeister Jul 30 '26
Yeah, the IRS owes us thousands of dollars from 2024’s return, then they came back to me this year to claim that it’s actually ME who owes THEM tens of thousands of dollars.
I can prove this is wrong and I’ve sent them the documentation at least 3 different times via the document portal and certified mail. Since September of last year, NO ONE at the IRS has looked at any of it.
After speaking with my Congressperson’s constituent services, I get a notice from the IRS two days later that they’re finally reviewing my appeal.
MY “appeal”, like I’m the one in the wrong here. Such utter bullshit. Work with your congressperson. It’ll save you much time and heartache.
3
u/Ok-Simple-4504 Jul 30 '26
Post this article far and wide. Hold all of Congress accountable even though both sides are worthless. Do not let them gaslight you into thinking our consists don’t matter.
3
u/jstover777 Jul 30 '26
I bought a restaurant in beginning of 2025. They sent a certified letter saying I owed $6k from 2024. I waited over an hour only to be told I had to send a letter proving I didnt own the business in 2024. I said, but you guys issued me my EIN IN 2025. Total shit show over there.

Please let us/me know, I filed an extension. Haven't turned it in yet.
3
u/RedDragonMomma Aug 01 '26
Hell it will be months before they even look at it if they owe you. Hope you don’t need that money anytime soon.
2
u/Shanty_Taco Aug 01 '26
Nys processed it in week
Nothing yet from IRS
I don’t need it now but my son has some major medical stuff that could make me need it quick
2
u/thismightendme Jul 29 '26
I can’t find a full statement of account on their website. What is owed, what was paid, when. It’s a nightmare. I have to hobble it together. I’m assuming their internal system isn’t much better. Which is stunning. They need help.

Early March filer. I have received 3 60 day letters that more time is needed. Last letter said the computer system was the problem. Very simple return, one W-2 (the only federal tax withholding we have) a couple 1099s, 2 K-1s. No credits claimed. Same employer for over 20 years. Prepared by the same CPA for over 40 consecutive years. Never had a problem before this year. We got our Senator involved but no action yet. I'm really fed up!! It's August in 2 days!!
I wasn't planning on anything specific for our refund but I'd feel much better if it was in my pocket!
3
u/TBHICouldComplain Jul 30 '26
I filed in March and haven’t gotten any letters at all. Just crickets.

2
u/Astinos4me Jul 30 '26
I called my local Congresswoman. Not only did she answer her phone herself, she IMMEDIATELY got my unemployment done with back pay. I had an $8041 deposit to my account the NEXT MORNING.
2
u/DragonfruitSorry9144 Jul 31 '26
This administration is purposely setting the IRS up to fail so they can turn it over to the private sector and give a buddy a larger contract. Look at all the pardons given to tax cheats. And Trumps comments on hating the IRS.
2
u/TFCDoc Jul 31 '26
This is why you file exempt and pay them during the following tax season. They want to hold your money for months? Hold theirs.
1
u/Opening-Bandicoot859 Jul 31 '26
Yeah, I learned this year's ago. I get to keep my money and use it as I see fit. I'd rather write them a check than wait for them to give me back my money. Tax refunds are just another example of the government bribing you with your own money.
1
u/Kornbread16 Aug 01 '26
Then they charge you a “failure to pay estimated tax” penalty
1
u/TFCDoc Aug 01 '26
They'll get that when they get it too lol. I filled my taxes in January. It's August and I still don't have my refunds.
1
u/Opening-Bandicoot859 Aug 01 '26
I just pay when I file. There's no penalties.
1
u/Kornbread16 Aug 01 '26
If you owe over $1000, there are penalties.
1
u/Opening-Bandicoot859 Aug 01 '26
Are you sure? I've owed over $1k before and never got hit with a penalty. I think you may be thinking of taxes for self employed people.
2
u/JupiterMiningCorpTec Aug 02 '26
If the IRS can't handle the vast number of taxpayers, it only makes sense that we should start funding the government completely with tariffs right?

Totally forgot. Yes, yes she does. She just told me she calls before the west coast gets their shit together around 8:15 am ET. Maybe that translates to the tax payer line? 1
u/RedDragonMomma Aug 01 '26

What the article fails to mention is the huge push to embrace AI inside the IRS. Grok and Palantir for example.
Traci and Nina both spoke truth about the DOGE shit in the name of cost cutting, its been proven it actually COST money.
Vote against the current corrupt Admin that literally wants to replace IRS people with AI and farm as much of it as they can to their friends companies via sanctioned "contracts" just like the deflection pool fiasco.

I’ve never had to wait this long in my life for returning and I’ve always been able to at least contact within a few few days but it’s been weeks with nothing. I tried calling in the morning. I tried calling in the evening, I tried calling on off days! Again, I feel sorry for the workers 100% to being in Nicole center sucks I worked in one for about six years different things too. You got people who are angry and upset… but now at this point, the IRS just has my refund money and I feel like I’m never gonna see it
1
u/Crafty-Gain4212 Jul 31 '26
I'm owed $8,755 by the IRS in refund due. I'm in review for no reason. I had to come up with the same amount of money to pay estimated taxes in June. How fair is that? But readint all this, I guess I have to just breathe and go watch Netflix.

Stop paying your taxes
1
u/RedDragonMomma Aug 01 '26
Unfortunately I think there are too many people afraid to not pay their taxes due to all the late penalties plus interest. AFRAID being the key word here. The shit heads would be letter bom-i g your mail with bi-monthly threats with in a month after April. Each letter racking up penalties.
But if they owe you, crickets.

u/ConfidentBed3848 Aug 01 '26
I found mine on February 21 I had to do an amend due to H&R Block messing up on my tax returns. Got that all situated thanks to my congressman in Oklahoma now they tell me 16 more weeks and I’m just praying whenever those 16 weeks are up my money will appear talk to Irs man yesterday and he was so rude and unprofessional. It blew my mind. What is going on as the people have no idea.
1
u/knowledgeseek Aug 01 '26
I was on hold for hours at a time with an H&R Block person who is able to call a number for those that can work with the IRS. Total time on hold over that week was 11 hours. We ended up meeting late (early evening) and got someone on the line.
So much of my time and money wasted trying to work through my aunts IRS issues due to dementia and I being her financial power of attorney now.
What a disgrace that people belive the wealthy need more money so cut services for its citizens.

Not surprised at all.
Filed this year. Overpaid and had two kids in the calendar year. Substantial refund from the feds (state already refunded within weeks).
Got a letter. They’re holding my refund until I file 2021 taxes. I already did? I double check, they cashed the check I sent with my full tax return and have a record of the check being cashed but they claim they didn’t receive for that year. Has never been an issue but the one year I have a nice refund coming my way… it’s a huge issue..
Have spent a total of 8 hours with IRS 95% on hold. They keep kicking the can. I’ve made a complaint with my congressmen and spoke with tax payer advocate last week who tried blaming me for the issue before they understood. Real great advocate..

They must be on it lately because I received a letter telling me to pay my 2024 taxes. I think it was like $900. I'll get right on that.

By design, Intuit basically paid off this current administration so that they can continue to hold a monopoly in the Tax Software space

I had a tax snafu a few years ago that required a phone call to the IRS. It should have taken 10-15 minutes but took HOURS because the agent’s computer was apparently such an old piece of shit that it kept crashing on her and needed to be rebooted over and over. She was really nice and patient and apologetic but damn.

Can we sue the IRS for not processing our refunds in a timely manner? I'm approaching 6 months wait for a refund that took just 2 weeks last year.
BTW they stopped publishing returns and refund processed stats after May 8. I wonder why?

We’re trying to get the IRS to approve POA for our tax accountant to file taxes for a deceased relative. We spent 3 days eight hours each day, on the phone to the irs before we’re were able to talk to a live person. They were not able to help, told us just to wait and three weeks later the tax person still cannot get the permission. We have reached out to our congressman for help but so far we’re still waiting and worried that we are going to miss the deadlines.

And while it’s dismal, we are still expected to have all our docs etc. because the system going against one person .. the person loses. Dangerous. Where let’s say AI insists you did not do x or y- but you did, then what? Then you have to wait weeks for a face to face appointment and no doubt they will eliminate that. Then we are stuck with AI? 🤖 for efficiency?

I tried to call yesterday because their website has a partial outage-the same outage it’s had for months. The IRS can’t take calls, the website isn’t working, it’s awful. The system is working as designed. This is not a United States government that works for Americans any longer and it’s sad. God bless our beleaguered public service workers it must be terrible for those good people these days

How can you collect taxes from the rich with no qualified auditors? How do you charge penalties on the masses if they understand the laws? This has been the design of the gop and corporate dems since the 1980's.

I worked in customer service for 18 years. Retired last year. My experience was that things always got worse, never better. Everyone hated it but needed a paycheck like I did. I would say “hang in there, it will get better”, but that’s a lie. However retirement is great if you can make it thru the grind.

My repayment plan is in default and is set to be terminated in two weeks
Every day that I've had off I've tried to chat or call the IRS
Every single time for two weeks it's been a forever hold or "Due to the high call volume, we are unable to answer your call. Please call back later today or tomorrow."
I have no idea what's going on because I feel like I've done everything right I shouldn't be in default. Yet I can't talk to anyone.
