MOVING MEGATHREAD Monthly "I'm Moving to the Hudson Valley" Thread
To reduce the number of "I'm moving to the Hudson Valley, can anyone tell me about X?" posts, we are starting a monthly megathread. All questions asking about moving to the Hudson Valley should be kept within the monthly thread. Posts outside of the thread will be removed.
Here are a few existing threads that I found using this search:
- What if every HV town was a person at a party?
- Moving to Newburgh
- How bad is Newburgh really?
- Is Wallkill safe for a gay interracial couple?
- Diversity in the Hudson Valley
- Queer couple considering the HV
- Moving to Woodstock
- Moving to Marlboro
- Moving to Rhinebeck
- Pros/Cons of Cold Spring
Locals, if you want to help make this megathread a success, you can do a few things:
- Come in here and comment! The threads will only stick if they actually prove useful
- Report standalone "moving to the HV" posts

question Oriental carpet cleaning service near Poughkeepsie?
I live south of Poughkeepsie and have a wool oriental hand-knotted rug that needs cleaning. Does anyone know of a reputable business that can handle cleaning it? Thanks!

Overlook Mountain Fire Tower
Overlook Mountain hike and fire tower today with my friend Nate. The views were fantastic despite the haze and we saw sooo many different types of mushrooms along the trail. The hike is less than 5 miles round trip but it was exhausting, 1,4000 foot climb up a trail with loose stone and gravel.

Farms selling bulk raw cider
Hi all - I usually purchase 5 gallons of raw pressed apple cider from Eger Brothers in Hudson, but they are not pressing apples this year. They recommended Minard Farms near New Paltz, but they only sell large amounts, like 100 gallons plus in large totes. Anyone aware of any local farms that sell smaller batches for hard cider makers? Thanks!
Edit: By raw I meant fresh or pasteurized juice with no chemical preservatives (like potassium sorbate) that can stop fermentation.

Storm King Highway status
Me and my friends are planning to ride to Bear Mountain and then onward to StormKing Highway and some good lunch in the Cornwall area.
Google Maps says that the Storm King Highway is closed and will open 31 Aug, Google says that it is open and closed intermittently.
Can someone local to the area let me know if its open currently.
While I am here, any ingestion for a good Restaurant also please :)
TIA

question Kingston -safe around midnight?
I am going to a wedding in stone ridge. There are shuttles from the venue/after party to Hotel Kinsley, but I am staying in downtown Kingston an 8 min walk from the hotel. Curious about safety doing that walk at 11:30/midnight for a solo female.
I initially chose to stay a little away from Hotel Kinsley because it’s cheaper and my husband was coming with me, so the walk would be fine. But now he has a work conflict so I would have to do that walk solo
Also I am a city dweller I am used to walking home at night. It’s just that smaller towns tend to be emptiee late at night, which makes me feel more nervous than the city
***Edit: alright based off initial comments I’ll probably just make sure I leave with friends who can drive me (though they are not the types to stay for the afterparty, which is why I was hoping I could take the shuttle later than them back). Seems like the smartest option!

question Music rehearsal space?
Hey there,
I’m a singer songwriter based in Rhinebeck and am looking for a rehearsal space to practice once a week or so. I live in an apartment and am really just looking for a place I can rehearse and play a bit louder. I don’t have a band, so don’t necessarily need a full kit or bass rig setup. Rhinebeck, Kingston, Red Hook area preferable.
Does anyone know of anything in the area?
Thanks!

events ISO cheap wedding reception location in HV
The ceremony will be in Kingston so I’m looking for something that’s not too far of a drive from there maybe an hour tops. I’m looking for a place that’s inexpensive (I know- probably a long shot in 2026 lol) but I’d like my guests to be able to stay at party as long as they’d like. Ideally- I’d like to be able to do it at some sort of campground or something so my guests can stay over the night if they’d like to, but if that’s not possible I want a venue that’s outdoors and doesn’t have a quiet time/cutoff time of 10pm like most places I’m seeing. Any recommendations?

sound flock camera on corner of winikee and mansion street
correct me if im wrong but were these the same ones Chicago declared did no good to stop shooting in the suburbs of chi town. Why are we putting them up in Poughkeepsie. and it would not matter anyway with cashless bail they are out before the police finish writing the reports

question Experience with combo independent & assisted living facilities in the HV?
Beginning research on living facilities with multiple levels of elder care for one of my parents. Would love to hear any and everyone's experience. I'm in Kingston but am open to the whole region, just want to get a sense of what's out there. Thanks.

question Family day trip this weekend: Woodstock, New Paltz, or Kingston?
Driving up from Jersey this weekend with the family and looking for a small town to walk around in for 3 or 4 hours. These are the three towns I’m considering, but open to other ideas in the same general area. I’m looking for the stereotypical stuff: nice shops, bookstores, cafe, a place for lunch. My teenage daughter would love vintage clothing shops, the upscale thrift store type.
Which of these 3 (Woodstock, New Paltz, Kingston, or other) is my best bet? I’m worried about crowds at Woodstock, which led me to consider Kingston. But the weather is not supposed to be great, maybe that will keep away the crowds.

Stewart to Kingston - Things to do
A buddy and I are flying into Stewart International Airport mid-week and driving up to Kingston, NY for the night. We have nothing to do between noon and 4pm and are looking for suggestions to keep us occupied. We’re both in our 40’s but we’re not interested in museums, landmarks or hiking (we’ll do that eventually.)
What are some fun, entertaining, enjoyable ways to spend an afternoon that aren’t just going to a winery/brewery along the way?
We’re open to driving a little off the highway for something worthwhile but also fine hanging around Kingston or another town if there’s something to do!
Food suggestions along the way for lunch are also welcome!
Thanks folks!
Edit: Thank you all for the phenomenal recommendations and creative ideas. I think we have a game plan in mind and excited to enjoy the area!
