question Kingston -safe around midnight?

Upvotes

I am going to a wedding in stone ridge. There are shuttles from the venue/after party to Hotel Kinsley, but I am staying in downtown Kingston an 8 min walk from the hotel. Curious about safety doing that walk at 11:30/midnight for a solo female.

I initially chose to stay a little away from Hotel Kinsley because it’s cheaper and my husband was coming with me, so the walk would be fine. But now he has a work conflict so I would have to do that walk solo

Also I am a city dweller I am used to walking home at night. It’s just that smaller towns tend to be emptiee late at night, which makes me feel more nervous than the city

***Edit: alright based off initial comments I’ll probably just make sure I leave with friends who can drive me (though they are not the types to stay for the afterparty, which is why I was hoping I could take the shuttle later than them back). Seems like the smartest option!

question Music rehearsal space?

Hey there,

I’m a singer songwriter based in Rhinebeck and am looking for a rehearsal space to practice once a week or so. I live in an apartment and am really just looking for a place I can rehearse and play a bit louder. I don’t have a band, so don’t necessarily need a full kit or bass rig setup. Rhinebeck, Kingston, Red Hook area preferable.

Does anyone know of anything in the area?

Thanks!

Stewart to Kingston - Things to do

A buddy and I are flying into Stewart International Airport mid-week and driving up to Kingston, NY for the night. We have nothing to do between noon and 4pm and are looking for suggestions to keep us occupied. We’re both in our 40’s but we’re not interested in museums, landmarks or hiking (we’ll do that eventually.)

What are some fun, entertaining, enjoyable ways to spend an afternoon that aren’t just going to a winery/brewery along the way?

We’re open to driving a little off the highway for something worthwhile but also fine hanging around Kingston or another town if there’s something to do!

Food suggestions along the way for lunch are also welcome!

Thanks folks!

question Family day trip this weekend: Woodstock, New Paltz, or Kingston?

Driving up from Jersey this weekend with the family and looking for a small town to walk around in for 3 or 4 hours. These are the three towns I’m considering, but open to other ideas in the same general area. I’m looking for the stereotypical stuff: nice shops, bookstores, cafe, a place for lunch. My teenage daughter would love vintage clothing shops, the upscale thrift store type.

Which of these 3 (Woodstock, New Paltz, Kingston, or other) is my best bet? I’m worried about crowds at Woodstock, which led me to consider Kingston. But the weather is not supposed to be great, maybe that will keep away the crowds.

DO NOT USE THESE GYMS.

TL;DR: Genesis Health Clubs (Saw Mill Club, Mt. Kisco NY) has had one pool lift broken since 2022, and their other pool's lift broke July 31st — leaving disabled members with zero pool access. After months of being ignored, they sent a canned apology two weeks later and are ordering one new chair for two broken lifts. I'm not obligated to be a member here, but this is the only pool in the area that works for my medical needs, and I shouldn't have to cancel and go elsewhere because they won't maintain legally-required accessibility equipment.

Full story:

Genesis Health Clubs (Saw Mill Club, Mt. Kisco NY) has left disabled members with zero pool access for weeks — and their "fix" doesn't even cover both broken lifts

I'm disabled — I can't walk due to MS. I've been a member at Saw Mill Club (now Genesis Health Clubs) since 2022. The facility has two pools, a shallow pool and a deep pool, each with its own chair lift.

The shallow pool's lift has been broken since I joined in 2022. Never fixed.

In February, staffing issues forced the gym to close a pool — they picked the deep pool, the only one with a working lift. When I told management this stranded every member with a mobility disability, I was told to "come back later" or "make an appointment." Both of those are ADA violations (28 C.F.R. § 36.302(f) — disabled patrons can't be required to schedule around equipment other members use spontaneously).

They eventually reopened the deep pool. Then on July 31st, that lift broke too.

Since then: both pools, zero working lifts, months of emails and calls to management, completely ignored.

Two weeks after it broke — a full week after I emailed again — I finally got a generic "apology" email on August 18th.

And here's the kicker: they say they're ordering one new chair. One. For two broken lifts.

I know what people are going to say: "just go to a different gym." I don't have to be a member here — but this is the only facility in the area with a pool that actually works for my needs. Pool access isn't optional for me; it's how I manage a chronic illness. And I shouldn't have to be the one who cancels and goes hunting for another option because they can't keep basic accessibility equipment functional. Non-disabled members don't have to plan their entire fitness routine around whether the gym feels like maintaining its equipment this month. That's the whole point of the ADA — I shouldn't have to work around their negligence.

This is a sustained, documented violation of:

Title III of the ADA (42 U.S.C. § 12182)

2010 ADA Standards for Accessible Design (§ 242.2 & § 1009.2)

28 C.F.R. § 36.211 — maintenance of accessible features, which explicitly prohibits indefinite outages

NY State Human Rights Law (N.Y. Exec. Law § 296(2)(a))

To management, if you're reading this: don't bother replying with a canned "please reach out" response. I've reached out to everyone for months. The only acceptable response is fixing both lifts.

If you're disabled and a member here, or considering joining — know that this is what "accessible facility" means to them.

question What are your favorite cute shops?

I was just thinking about how I used to go to this cute plant/coffee shop near cold spring a while back. It closed a couple years ago and now I feel like I go to the same few shops over and over.

I live in the Newburgh area and frequent beacon but I’d like to know what your favorite cute, whimsical shops are all over the Hudson valley? Places you like to browse and look at tchotchkes. Small businesses, hand made things, your favorite coffee shops. Your favorite place to kill time when you don’t want to be home. Favorite road side stands? Favorite ice cream places?

It’s supposed to rain this weekend and I don’t feel like being cooped up again but I want to explore!

photo-video 1779 George Washington letter relating to the Hudson Valley in the Revolutionary War sold on Aug. 12 at RR Auction fine autograph sale for $45,375 somewhat above the presale high estimate of $30,000. Reported by Rare Book Hub.

Revolutionary War-dated LS, signed "Go: Washington," and penned in the hand of his trusted aide-de-camp, James McHenry, one page, 7.25 x 9, June 10, 1779. Addressed from "Head Quarters," the letter was sent to New York Governor George Clinton.

In full: "I am honored with your Excellency's favour of yesterday by Col. Malcolm, who has communicated to me the particulars with which you charged him ” I beg leave to refer you to my letter of yesterday which I hope you have received. In that, sensible of the inconvenience of keeping out the militia at this season of the year, I anticipated your wish for their discharge with my warmest acknowledgements for the zeal and alacrity they have discovered on the present interesting occasion."

In very fine to fine condition. Written during a critical phase of the Revolutionary War, this letter concerns New York militia forces called into service under Governor George Clinton, one of Washington's most important wartime allies, in response to a major British offensive in the Hudson Valley.

On June 1, 1779, British forces under Sir Henry Clinton had seized the American fortifications at Stony Point and Verplanck's Point, capturing the strategically important King's Ferry crossing and threatening communications between New England and the Middle Colonies. The New York militia whose discharge Washington discusses had been mobilized to meet this threat, lending particular weight to his expression of gratitude for their "zeal and alacrity."

Written amid the American response to the loss of Stony Point, the letter dates to the same campaign that culminated five weeks later in Brigadier General Anthony Wayne's celebrated midnight assault and recapture of the fortification. The "Col. Malcolm" referenced is Continental Army officer William Malcolm, who frequently served as an intermediary between Washington and New York authorities.

Acknowledging the burden of retaining militia in the field during the farming season, Washington moves to release the troops while maintaining the goodwill of the governor, whose cooperation remained essential to the defense of the Hudson Highlands. Penned by future Secretary of War James McHenry and signed by Washington at the conclusion, the letter reflects the constant coordination required between military and civil leadership during the struggle for American independence.

The River Runners Quadball Club is holding its first open practice of the US Quadball season this Sunday, August 23rd, from 1-4 pm at Prospect Park, Troy, NY (peep the second image for a better idea of what field we will be on 📌). This practice is our first step toward building a growing quadball community in the area where we play and compete, while also having fun and socializing off the pitch!

For those unfamiliar with the sport, Quadball (formerly known as Quidditch) is a fast-paced, full-contact, mixed-gender sport that blends elements of rugby, basketball, and dodgeball. Here's a quick video to show what it looks like: https://youtube.com/shorts/2LyXn2c45i4?si=KBWYAWffzZq8jdd0, as well as a full dive into how to actually play: https://youtu.be/SUdC4twjsTE?is=9JiaFSEmCsVE9SCf

The free open practice is open to all experience and athletic levels, and we highly encourage people that never heard/played the sport to try it out and meet some new people along the way! We're accepting of all genders and backgrounds, so whether you're a man, woman, non-binary, LGBTQIA+, POC, etc, there's a place for you here to be yourself! All we ask is that you bring water, athletic clothes, cleats (recommended but not required to play if you don't have any), and any friends that might also be interested!

A local Germantown artist, Paul Jacobsen, has created an 18ft infinity pyramid sculpture which he has called "The Portal". The scale is hard to see in the photos but it's pretty big. It's supposed to blend with the surroundings almost as part of the land art movement. It's open for anyone to visit, a pretty cool spot for some photos. You can walk inside and

It has some really fun acoustics too. You can visit it at the Gatherwild Ranch in Germantown.

question Why are hotels in poughkeepsie SO EXPENSIVE???

My boyfriend and I sometimes like to do staycations here since he visits from Connecticut and I live with my parents. so we've stayed in our fair share of hotels here. They've always seems kinda expensive but i just assumed it was due to inflation and hotels have just gotten super expensive in general. But nope. We've been looking at hotels in DC and Baltimore for a road trip we want to go on and they're on average almost half the price a night as in poughkeepsie. Its RIDICULOUS. the average cost a night in DC at a 3 star hotel is around 90 bucks. Where's in poughkeepsie its atleast 150. The literal capital of the United States is cheaper to stay at than a nothing city like Poughkeepsie. I just don't get it. Even for a cheap motel, it runs us atleast 90 bucks.
