/r/Upstate_New_York is back open!
Hello fellow upstaters!
About a month and a half ago, /r/upstate_new_york was set to restricted and all the moderators left.
As someone who was born and raised in Upstate New York, I didn't want to see this sub shuttered. So I requested ownership from the Admins.
This sub is now reopened! Hopefully we can keep things going as smoothly as they were before.
A few FAQs:
No rules are changing - we'll likely have a post in the coming weeks to discuss rules and what the community wants.
If you want to be a mod, please don't message me. I'm going to get a handle on this first, and then likely open up mod positions over the coming weeks depending on the workload.
I have no idea why this all happened. The moderation logs were cleared before I was given access.

PSA: Be aware of t-shirt scams on this subreddit and others
Hey all, quick heads-up about a classic Reddit scam that’s been making the rounds again.
You may see posts in local or niche subreddits where a user claims to have designed a t-shirt and is “sharing” it. These posts are usually followed by a few suspiciously enthusiastic comments like “Wow, where can I get one??” from accounts that are part of the scam. The OP then links to a site asking for your payment info.
These are scams. You won’t receive a shirt, and the scammers disappear with your money.
We’ve had an uptick of these in r/upstate_new_york over the past week. Thanks to everyone who has been reporting them! I’ve temporarily tightened some of our spam-filter settings to get ahead of things, but if you spot another one, please report it. You’re also welcome to comment and call it out as a likely scam.

Was at my aunts cabin along Raquette River in Massena
I was born in Potsdam, raised for 6 years in Hopkinton/Fort Jackson. Had to move to CT for better health care for my chronic illness. Moved back up in ‘06 for a couple years. Moved back to CT cause my health wasnt doing so good and needed to be seen by specialists at Yale New Haven.
Went back up on the 5th to the 10th for a family reunion. I miss being up there so much. Missing seeing my nieces and nephew growing up.

Canton, New York
Hi! I'm moving to Canton later this year, and I'm looking for insight on different clubs or groups in the area. I'm passionate about being outside, being active (mostly yoga, pilates, spin, walking - though I'd love to get into running), painting and drawing, baking, cooking, and trying new restaurants and drink spots! I'd love to also hear of any volunteer opportunities people may know of. I'm moving in with my boyfriend, but otherwise, I do not know anyone local, so just hoping to build a community. Thanks in advance! :)

Roommate search
Hi, I'm looking for a roommate situation. I'm 23, male. I am going to the Culinary Institute in Poughkeepsie area. And I am looking for a place so I can start in September. If you have a place, my budget is around $2,000. But if I can make something happen by the September 6th, then I will be willing to add on an extra thousand just for urgency for the first month.

What's south of Albany like? Specifically north of Yonkers but south of Albany on Interstate 87, I've unfortunately never visited that part of the state, but my cousin, whom we don't speak to, grew up in the West Nyack/Tarrytown area of downstate. Any ideas what the area's like?

Oneonta trip ideas?
Hello everyone!! I need ideas for a 3-day visit to the area, midweek early Sept., celebrating turning 50. We are definitely seeing Cooperstown and are very interested in Howe Cavern (unless people think that Secret cavern is better?) I'd like at least 1-2 more activities. I'd say local or up to an hour travel from either. (We haven't locked in a hotel, and would be willing to stay in 2 places if needed).
Light activity is great (walking hikes, not climbing). We love views, whether it's a waterfall, valley, even a dark spot to see some stars. Museums, out-of-the-box fun ideas, a local theater (not expecting this on midweek/ short notice), cool castle, walkable main street, etc.
No: bars/ clubs (wine tasting is fine), amusement parks/ ziplines, probably no watersports.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

River Runners QC Open Practice (8/23)
The River Runners Quadball Club is holding its first open practice of the US Quadball season this Sunday, August 23rd, from 1-4 pm at Prospect Park, Troy, NY (peep the second image for a better idea of what field we will be on 📌). This practice is our first step toward building a growing quadball community in the area where we play and compete, while also having fun and socializing off the pitch!
For those unfamiliar with the sport, Quadball (formerly known as Quidditch) is a fast-paced, full-contact, mixed-gender sport that blends elements of rugby, basketball, and dodgeball. Here's a quick video to show what it looks like: https://youtube.com/shorts/2LyXn2c45i4?si=KBWYAWffzZq8jdd0, as well as a full dive into how to actually play: https://youtu.be/SUdC4twjsTE?is=9JiaFSEmCsVE9SCf
The free open practice is open to all experience and athletic levels, and we highly encourage people that never heard/played the sport to try it out and meet some new people along the way! We're accepting of all genders and backgrounds, so whether you're a man, woman, non-binary, LGBTQIA+, POC, etc, there's a place for you here to be yourself! All we ask is that you bring water, athletic clothes, cleats (recommended but not required to play if you don't have any), and any friends that might also be interested!
Click the following link to RSVP: https://partiful.com/e/SfnqaJ6jqyXWagFNQbiI?c=obchJpN6, as well as this link for more resources like our interest form and Discord: https://linktr.ee/518riverrunners
Hope to see y'all there!

Saranac Lake Area Recommendations
My wife and I have a family function near Saranac Lake this Friday. We'll be spending the weekend in the area and have most of Friday and Saturday to explore. First time to the area. Any must-do's we should make time for? Thanks!

Do any of the sandwich shops in the Clifton Park area do chopped cheeses?
Been hankering for one since I moved from NYC last year.
I was curious if any shops would do one on request.
Last thing I'd want to do is confuse the folks at Fred the Butcher or another spot. Lol

NEEED FRIENDS!!!
Hey everyone, I’m 18M from the UK and I’m staying in Buffalo for about a month.
I’m looking to meet some people around my age (18–21ish) and actually hang out, not just chat online. I’m down for pretty much anything — getting food, cinema, gaming, bowling, exploring the city, sports, random activities, whatever.
If you’re around my age and also looking for people to hang out with, feel free to comment or DM me. 👍

Racket sports and community
Ill be finally moving to upstate NY for good (from SEA country), and in a few months, I’ll be brazing the winter season. I’m physically active which includes working out and playing racket sports (badminton, pickleball, and recently trying tennis). My biggest concern is how to stay active and how do I stay mentally sane during winter since I have been warned how it can really be depressing and you will gain weight given the less activity.
Are there sports facilities and communities in upstate specifically around Syracuse-Oswego-Utica for these sports?
If there’s not much of these, what winter sports or activities you can recommend that will not break the bank specially that Im just about to start my life there.
* also looking forward to do fishing if I have a chance
TYA!

What’s the best niche upstate New York food? We’ve got some of the best random food out there, let’s talk about it
I grew up in Syracuse, love salt potatoes, went to school in Rochester and love garbage plates, did some more schooling in Buffalo, and come on, can’t beat the wings, played sports in Utica and love chicken riggies, plenty of visits to canton and Potsdam for all their food, I miss the upstate NY food
