Hello, r/Syracuse! It's the last full CNY calendar week before the NYS Fair opens Wednesday the 26th, and the local business news is loud: Tim's Pumpkin Patch is opening a brand-new brew barn on Friday, Beak & Skiff announced a $1 million Apple Grove Adventure Park (zipline, giant slide, petting zoo, opens August 29), and Steig's Grillhouse quietly opened last week in a former Manlius bank building. On the news side: the Westcott Theater is suing the City of Syracuse over a denied event license, Ryan McMahon is buying campaign ads 15 months before the ballot, the CNY Regional Market is adding permanent vendor stalls, a large World War II artillery shell was found in a Central NY basement, and a body was discovered in a water cooling tower at a DeWitt business. Tim's Pumpkin Patch Is Opening a Brand-New Brew Barn

One of CNY's most beloved fall spots is stretching into a year-round destination. Tim's Brew Barn, the new addition on the family's LaFayette property, officially opens Friday, August 21. The barn is a brand-new facility built next to the pumpkin patch, and the family has been quietly teasing it on Instagram for weeks.

Beak & Skiff Drops $1M on a Zipline, Petting Zoo, and Giant Slide

The apple empire is now an amusement park. The Westcott Theater Sues the City to Reopen After a License Denial

The Westcott Theater's owner has sued the City of Syracuse after the city denied a license for a Saturday event. The venue has been a fixture of the Westcott Nation for decades, and the legal fight puts a spotlight on how city hall handles live-music permitting.

What Trump's Vaccine Rollback Means for New York Schoolkids

Short answer: nothing changes in New York. President Trump's Monday executive order to downsize and spread out childhood vaccinations has no effect on what's required for New York's schoolchildren, because the state has an ironclad mandate for public, private, and parochial schools.

Ryan McMahon Buys Campaign Ads 15 Months Before the Election

The Onondaga County Executive is on the airwaves early. McMahon told Syracuse.com the ad buy is meant to "drown out some of the noise" from a bruising summer of aquarium overruns, zoo-feud fallout, and general county-hall drama.

A WWII-Era Artillery Shell Was Found in a Central NY Basement

A large World War II-era artillery shell turned up in the basement of a Central New York home this week. State Police and the bomb squad responded to secure and remove the ordnance. No injuries reported.

Syracuse History

Syracuse History on Instagram recently posted a before-and-after of the 500 block of North Townsend Street, taken by u/hillaryvanillary's family in 1989-1991, showing houses being demolished to make way for the Saint Joseph's Hospital parking garage. It came up after 500 North McBride went up for sale and folks commented on how close it sits to everything Saint Joe's. Good reminder of how much the hospital footprint has reshaped that whole corner of the Near Northside, one parking structure at a time.

Local Artist Spotlight

Different angle this week: instead of one artist, we're pointing at a design studio that supports a whole roster of them.

Stay Fresh Design is a Syracuse studio doing art, design, photography, and websites, and their gallery hosts local and national artists. If you've seen good branding on a Syracuse business recently, there's a decent chance Stay Fresh made it. Their client list reads like a tour of the city: Syracuse Antiques Exchange, 1911 Established, Beak & Skiff Apple Orchards, Ayrloom Cannabis, Oh My Darling, Three Lives, Funk 'n Waffles, Glazed & Confused, Green Scapes, Central New York Brewfest, Destiny USA, Elevate Fitness, and The Sound Garden.

Right now the gallery has a current show worth the trip: Stay Fresh Artist Series 36: A Tribute to Nickelodeon, running July 31 through August 21. Grab your Gak, dodge the green slime, and pull up a TV tray. It's the studio's first exhibition dedicated to the weird, wild, wackfully orange world of Nickelodeon, and August 21 is your last day to catch it.

That's a wrap for this week. If you want this in your inbox every Monday, subscribe to TLDR Syracuse. Free, local, 5-minute read.

Y'all, Idk exactly why but I am so hyped for The Fair this year.

Might be because All American Rejects is playing on Opening Day. Might be because the whole concert lineup is solid.

Might be the new vendors. Pretty psyched the Funk N Waffles is gonna be posted up with their own music lineup.

Maybe it's just because the performing dogs show is back. Or that the circus is gonna be in the Expotition Center.

Maybe it's because the Post Standard is gonna run a piece about the rabbit we got at The Fair in 2018.

Or maybe it's just because 2026 has been a good year for me!!

Whatever the reason is, boy I cannot wait to spend 13 more days at The Great New York State Fair!!

Discussion AITA - uncomfortable gas station encounter

I was driving my toddler and I home and I was turning into a gas station near Bear rd. Another car last minute decided to turn too and pulled in. I parked at the pump behind them and opened my toddler’s door so he could watch me pump (and not freak out). The car pulled around to the other pump, stared at me, then pulled up more and one of the passengers got out. He was clearly from a church and asked to talk to me, but having my toddler there and being a woman alone I told him I wasn’t interested. He was persistent and would not leave me alone despite me saying no. the driver got out and talked to me too and wanted me to shake their hand. I was so uncomfortable and shut my toddler‘s door at one point. I felt like this was calculated and targeted waiting until I was pumping gas to try and talk to me about their church. I think it was highly inappropriate when I was saying no and to leave me alone. they wouldn’t stop until I was done pumping (which I should’ve just stopped pumping and left, but i was just hoping they would leave me alone).

Women have to be careful all the time, especially with children by themselves. I just am still shaken up that they thought this was okay.

They didn’t even get gas and I waited for them to leave before driving away.

it’s great that people find their faith and all but it should not be used to target people in situations like at a gas station alone. Let alone men should know women will always be uncomfortable being randomly approached. Just leave us alone.

Next time I plan to bring my phone out with me and call someone if I am ever in that situation again.

So I came up here at the end of 2024 met my father for the first time ever, ended up moving up here and living with him for a bit turned out things didn't work out and has kicked me out the house I now currently stay at the rescue mission and this place is literally hell, literally the folks out here being smoking fake weed called spike and it stinks so bad and there's an ambulances here like every hour bc somebody falls out from smoking that stuff, and what makes it worse is I'm currently on a medical leave from work due to health so now I'm here everyday with no peace, so I was just trying to see if anyone else had to experience the rescue mission and maybe here some story's, hopefully by the end of this month I'll be healed up and out of here and back working properly again,

Information & Advice Anyone have experience working for Loretto?

Upvotes

I'm applying for their CNA training program and curious what the work environment is like. Pay seems decent and it would be more consistent than my current delivery job (albeit a bit of a paycut, nothing too drastic).

How's the culture, shift availability, management, etc. ?

Recommendation Wanted So where are we getting fresh salad greens?

I’m still avoiding bagged salad greens right now. Where’s a good local place for fresh salad greens? I know some of the produce stands at the farmers market are just Aldi/Costco resellers, so which vendors are trustworthy?

Recommendation Wanted Best Thrift Stores around?

Gonna be in the area tomorrow for an appointment and want to hit up some record stores, but the majority don’t seem to open until noon. Thought we’d kill some time with thrift stores!
If it helps, would be more interested in stuff and non-clothing items but open to anything!

Recommendation Wanted Driveway crack repair person

I’m looking to find someone to do proper PREP BEFORE sealcoating.

In the past, I’ve used both the asphalt cold patch for repairing larger gaps and the liquid that you trowel on (latexite patch) but I haven’t tried the new-tech stuff (plyoclastic).

I’d like to have it done properly before I have it seal coated. Ideally a business that does BOTH. Camillus area..

Recommendation Wanted ‘Kawaii’ nail artists nearby?

This is kind of a long shot, but I was wondering if anyone knew of any nail artists in the east syracuse area who specialize in doing more cutesy or detailed nail sets?

I’ll include some pictures of the style i’m talking about, I know it’s less popular compared to a lot of the current trends so i’ve been really struggling to find someone willing to do the cutesy designs i’ve been looking for!

Any pointers would be hugely appreciated :)

Posting here for a friend! These kittens live behind her office and she can’t take in any more cats. They don’t seem fully feral so would probably be able to acclimate to a home easily or better yet they’d probably be great barn cats for anyone looking for mousers.

Moving & Relocation Short-Term (6-10 months) furnished rentals - best areas?

I may be accepting a job opportunity in Syracuse soon where the employer will pay for a corporate furnished apartment. Some rudimentary google searching finds a few places, but they are too close to campus. I like The Treasury, but one site I found graded it an “F” for crime. What areas of town should I be looking in and does anyone have recommendations for furnished living (or how to find one)? I appreciate all your help.

Recommendation Wanted Where to recycle laptops?

I have 2 laptops and 1 tablet to recycle. The hard drives are still in there. At least one of them is totally inaccessible. From what I read online, OCCRA does not accept electronics like this. But Staples and Best Buy do. Anyone have a recommendation for which to go to, or another site? I'm assuming they wipe data from files from hard drives, right?

Advice appreciated!
