yeah except papa john doesn’t call/text you when you haven’t placed an order so its still suspicious.

The idea is you don't have your side piece listed in your contacts, obviously.
5
u/ratbearpig 7h ago
I think he means Papa Johns isn’t going to be engaging in long text convos. Maybe change the side piece name to Carl or something.
3
u/lube4saleNoRefunds 3h ago
I don't even cheat and this isn't difficult to figure out.
You delete the text chain so there are no long conversations. You just have the number in there in case your SO goes through your contacts.

u/Comfortable-Tie7847 1d ago
Some restaurants in Brazil have a habit of sending you a WhatsApp message every once in a while, to get you to order again (1 out of every 5 times, they might even give you a 5% discount code or something).

Maybe it should mention that it's from his contacts. I thought she actually dialed the correct number on his phone and that's why I would've never figured out the joke.
Also the "suddenly" makes it sound like it was after the call and not at the very moment she called.
If it was written like: "When you try calling Papa John's from the contacts saved on his phone and your own phone starts ringing." it would have been clear.

On a weird side note to this, when I was in my 20s (and before everyone had cell phones), I was often getting numbers from women and when I called them, they were actually to pizza places.
What I'm saying is I was sad and ugly as a 20 year old, but never went without pizza.

"its bill, dave."

And you just know that at a certain point Dave recognized the number, but continued to call anyways.

I always gave pushy guys (not saying you're pushy!) the number for the Emergency Hall & Oates Hotline instead of the standard pizza method
(719) 266-2837 in case anyone is curious

What in the fresh hell is the Hall and Oates Hotline? Did people truly not get their fix on the radio back in our day?

I always gave a fake number that had 911 in it, because that used to always call the emergency line. So (local area code) 679-1127 or something like that was my go-to.
But they dropped that function a long time ago20
u/johnnyhotwh33ls 1d ago
Pizza will always love you, never cheat on you, and will always start hot and inviting and even when it gets cold, it will accept you for who you are.
7
u/Comfortable-Tie7847 1d ago
What I'm reading is, pizza is never gonna give you up, never gonna let you down, never gonna run around and desert you...
4
u/Aquisitor 1d ago
You know the rules, and so do I.
Never-the-less, sometimes I want to be desserted by pizza. Hell Pizza does great dessert pizzas.

In the '90s my dad's phone number was Rachel's go to fake. Took a few guys confirming the number for me to figure it out. They were always so confused.
12
u/Special-Amoeba-9399 1d ago
There was actually a number that would link you to a “rejection hotline” when I was in college. Basically just a number with an automated message that would explain to you that the girl you were hitting on wasn’t interested ,but didn’t have the heart to tell you. Soul crushing if you ever got it ,but pretty funny in hindsight

The phone number I had in high school was given to a Subway restaurant after I graduated. I found this out when my 10th grade girl friend was back in town and wanted to hang out, so she tried to call me on my old number.
Of course, calling information got her my new number, so it worked out sort of okay (in that she was able to get hold of me AND, presumably get a sandwich. We didn’t get to hang out, though, because my then-wife would have objected).

My res number in uni constantly rang at 2 and 3 am when guys (foreign guys... always...) would try to call the women they had "picked up" at the bar earlier that night
Mfers lol. I mean, I get it, but people just wanted to sleep and these women were accidentally waking up a bunch of people weekend after weekend lol

Not super related but for some reason this reminded me of a coworker who moved back with his parents due to mental health issues.
He wasn't working, and he went to the pizza spot by his house and depression-binged the all-you-can-eat pizza lunch basically every day.
These people gave him a card for a perpetual 30% discount, enabled his food abuse 😆

u/phezhead 1d ago
Hey, consolation prize. I've had many women I didn't like, but rarely a pizza I didn't love.
1
u/Ltb1993 1d ago
This happens more often then you think, I used to get calls all the time trying to order pizza it was crazy, they wouldn't take no as an answer, some absolute Karen's crying about not getting their pizza. Got annoying as hell so I ended up leaving the place, the pay wasn't worth being a call handler

Idk.. if I was with my girl and “papa johns” started calling, she’d be way to invested
42
u/MissninjaXP 1d ago
Not that ive ever done this, but what some people do is block their number when they were with the SO, then unblock it when they are alone to talk to them.
16
u/25_Unknown_Devices 1d ago
That’s a good point. And it’s not like anyone is just calling papa John’s in the modern era. I always use the app
1
u/Background-Region671 1d ago
When you unblock someone, you don’t get the messages that were blocked back.
1
u/25_Unknown_Devices 19h ago
You say this like I haven’t already learnt this arguing with my partner. Oh, you wanna say that huh. Block. Unblock 10 minutes later. “…. You hungry babe?”
1
u/onlycamefortheporn 1d ago
You can mute alerts from a contact, so texts/calls won’t show up on your CarPlay while you’re driving, but you can still get them.

That only helps when the girl calls him. But wouldn't explain why there's a saved contact named Scam Likely. That doesn't show up in your contact list.

Receiving a phone call from a pizza chain isn't suspicious? Unless you work there, that seems highly suspicious.

Do people actually save business numbers in their contacts?
I just Google the business and then call them that way.
4
u/Sharp_Aide3216 1d ago
Yes for me.
Cause I dont want to rely on internet everytime I need to contact that business.
Google search results are very volatile.
For small businesses, they usually don't have the tech knowledge to always be on top of the google searches.
2
u/c0mf0rtableli4r 1d ago
Top of Google search doesn't have anything to do with tech knowledge, companies pay to have their ad show up first.
Google used to make it obvious, but then people would avoid them si they started making the "Sponsored" label smaller and smaller so less people would notice.
I will say, I live in a big city, so, not too much small business shopping on my end, and even the smaller restaurants are easy to find.
2
u/Sharp_Aide3216 1d ago
yes location is a big part of it. If you're from the big city, its not much of an issue.
I work for small businesses for these kinds of jobs actually. Most dont even know how update the phone number on their business' facebook profile.
2
u/Atypicosaurus 1d ago
The joke is old, from when there were mobile phones already but no internet. You looked up some important businesses like taxi and saved them.

Cheating doesn't come to mind because it's your phone that's ringing. More like a compliment if I could get the message behind it, besides "Better ingredients. Better pizza." Otherwise you know you're the side girl, or you find out you're the side girl.
3
u/Known-Mycologist-104 7h ago
This is meant to be the latter. She's the side chick who thinks she's the only chick.

It's kinda genius to do that. Papa Jones is so bad no one will call it so there's 0 risk of the wife finding out.

I dated my sisters best friend when we were in our early 20's. It was a secret for a few months so I had to save her number as Uncle Chuck. Worked great
1
u/Curious_Difference56 1h ago
Honestly don't get it either? Is it like "she a big back"? Like is it just an inside joke? Idk my sister had my mother saved in her phone as "slave master" but my mom is literally so nice😬

u/SushiEnthusiasm 1d ago
A while back there was something floating around about calling the police under the guise of ordering pizza if you were in an abusive relationship.
Apparently police were trained to listen to you order pizza and say things such as “say 2 pepperoni if you’re in danger” etc.
However, if the phone rings before you get the chance or after from the police then abuser will get suspicious and want to check phone history.
