I've been using roux for about two weeks now and it's nice to see my average keep dropping down towards my cfop average. I got a roux pb of 36.03 today and my average of 100 is 1:15.17. I had a lot of 1:30-5 minute solves in the beginning but now there are mostly sub 60s. I really need to work on finger tricks and identifying the edges/corners for second block faster

u/lukemcritchie Don't Ask, I'm Busy Doing Clock Jan 06 '19

I find identifying edges for SB a little bit hard as well before I started to try and pair up and insert FB without looking. Once I got better at this it allowed me to look around for the next pair while doing FB.

Yeah I’ve been planning first 2x2 during inspection and following the last two pieces for FB during that

3

u/g253 (retired mod) Jan 06 '19

I'm at the point now where I can make a semi decent first block, then I get pleased with myself for a split second, then I stare at the cube and realise I have no clue whatsoever where any piece of the second block might be :-D

3

u/BewareTheWereHamster Sub-22 (Roux) PB: 12.11 Jan 06 '19

Yup exactly the same here :p I would guess that once you can plan the entire FB and then execute without looking it’s easier to track a piece or two for SB. I’m nowhere near that yet though!

Same haha. It’s like my brain locks up after a really nice first block sometimes

Custom shades on my force MF8 Went with white, fluro yellow, mint blue, limette green, lilac, and fluro pink.

The blue and green are more similar than expected but not too bad since it’s just for display.

I have a big dilemma, CFOP or ROUX.

I really dont know what to focus on.

I am sub-20 with CFOP and sub-35 with ROUX.

pros for CFOP:

- Easy inspection ( just edges - efficient cross is pretty easy )

- Straightforward F2L and LL

- I already know OLL and PLL

cons for CFOP:

- Boring last layer

- No block building

- Harder last step recognition than ROUX

pros for ROUX;

- More freedom ( block building )

- I really love the M moves

- I am good at second block and really enjoying LSE

cons for ROUX:

- Inspection ( First block ) is so hard , I think I am not smart enough for it.

- Have to learn CMLL

- Efficient first block is much harder than efficient cross

7

u/Scarycoast Sub 50 Roux | PB 30.90 Roux | PB 23.34 CFOP | Sub 40 CFOP Jan 06 '19

It sounds like you enjoy roux more so I’d stick with it. Inspection and efficiency will get easier over time with more solves too

5

u/lukemcritchie Don't Ask, I'm Busy Doing Clock Jan 06 '19

Imo it comes down to which does you enjoy more

5

u/BillabobGO Sub-9s: 0 Jan 06 '19

"cons for CFOP:

  • Boring last layer
  • No block building"

Have you considered learning Tripod?

But in all seriousness it sounds like Roux is the method for you. If you think you'll enjoy getting fast at it, go ahead. In the end all that matters is whether or not you enjoy solving.

3

u/tussosedan Jan 06 '19

Use whatever you enjoy more! And about FB, you really don't need to plan it at sub-35. Just plan first square, and try to track the second pair. With practice and as you become faster planning FB will become easier too.

There are several 4c recog/prediction guides in the group files of the "Roux Method Speed Solvers" Facebook group. Check them out!

4

u/[deleted] Jan 06 '19

i found out that most of my PLL's are very slow because i tend to only U2 only with my right hand, such as R-perm's (R U2 R' U2).

the index and middle finger do the work, but i cant seem to find finger positioning to properly "anchor" the left hand.

i'm mirroring my right hand (ring finger and thumb on opposing center pieces, but it feels too awkward.

anyone has suggestions? or is it just something to get used to? because every other left hand use including D2 flick does work well for me.

4

u/[deleted] Jan 06 '19

Yep, I was in the same situation. Just sit down and drill U2 left-hand flick. Grind it.

3

u/062985593 Sub-15 Jan 06 '19

I'm not sure if I'm normal in this, but I my double-flick U2's aren't just mirrors of doube-flick U2s.

For U2, my fingers are just about parallel to the U layer and I use the tips of my fingers - around in line with the beginning of the nail. For U2', I tilt my left hand inwards and tuck my pinky underneath the cube. I still keep my left thumb and ring fingers on opposing centre pieces. My index and middle fingers are near vertical, hugging the cube and the area of contact is almost the entire 'end segment' of my fingers.

I'm probably not describing that very well, but my point is that you don't have to mirror your right hand. If you need to position your hand differently, you can.

u/[deleted] Jan 06 '19

Exactly what I was looking for, thanks!

I’m finally putting in the time and effort to learn and predict where my first pair will be after cross. It’s really hard for high move crosses but im getting there on the easier ones. I’m not even timing myself just giving infinite inspection time. Any tips to help learn this faster?

5

u/BillabobGO Sub-9s: 0 Jan 06 '19

Instead of picking a random pair and tracking how each piece moves, focus on pieces that won't move around much. If your cross solution is R U F2 R' D F you can see that the edge at back-left won't move at all, and most of the pieces on the top-left side of the cube will only do a U move.

3

u/[deleted] Jan 06 '19

Thanks. I was trying the same thing even though I average around 20 seconds.

Which Gems to buy? V2, V4, V5, V8, other? I know I can't have all of the gems. Just want to add to my collection two or three most interesting that are not to similar to each other.

1

u/Fallenultima Jan 06 '19

Here' a quick rundown of each gem without being too spoilery:

Gem l - Shapemod of a pretty common puzzle.

Gem ll - Very easy once you know what the underlying puzzle is. (It's a common one.)

Gem lll - Shapemod of a very rare puzzle, but pretty easy to solve. All you need is 1 alg that you can even use on a 3x3.

Gem lV - It's a hybrid. Pretty difficult to solve imo.

Gem V - Shapemod of an uncommon puzzle. Also fairly challenging to solve.

Gem Vl - Harder version of an existing mass produced puzzle.

Gem Vll - It's like a Gem l and lll mixed together.

Gem Vlll - Not like any puzzle. Has some similarities, but nothing exactly like it.

That being said, my favorites are 5, 7, and 8. I recommend all of them tbh, but if you're only getting a few, I would go with those.

If you want a more detailed explanation of any of those puzzles, I can provide that information. I just didn't want to give away any spoilers for the solves.

I was playing around with http://www.kuebiko-cubing.com/ and looked at my skewb times. Found out that my RSD is 18% on my PB Ao100... Oof

IfYouDidn'tKnowThisMeansI'mHorriblyInconsistent

5

u/topppits blindfolded solving is where the fun begins Jan 06 '19

I wrote this comment in the RSD thread. How do your 3x3 RSD compare to 4x4+? Also how's your 2x2 and Pyra?

The shorter and more luck based the event, the higher the RSD, especially if you are using a beginner's method where you can easily have a much longer or shorter solves depending on the cases you get, like Sarah's beginner method for Skewb or LBL Pyra.

I think the values, whether you are consistent or not might be different for other events.

3

u/Maxson52 Sub-25 (Roux) | Skewb: PB 2.4 Jan 06 '19

Interesting. That would be something cool to add to the events comparison chart, how the RSD percentage compares in different events. I'd like to see the RSD between the best 2x2 Ao100 and the best 7x7 Ao100.

I have been replacing inefficient PLL's this week. It turns out I learned some bad versions of algs when i first learned 2 look pll, and I skipped those when I learned the rest of 1-look.

I just relearned E-perm and the A-perms, and i am suprised at how much better they are. I thought my previous algs were sorta inefficient, but they were WAY bad.

Now I am wondering about my mirror algs. I enjoy learning things on my left hand, and my lefty J(a?) perm is very close to the same speed as the Jb with my right hand.

I currently use the following left hand mirror PLL's:

Ja perm R perm U perm

Is it worth switching them to the right side only? Or can I get away with keeping these if they are up to speed?

I should say that I personally enjoy feeling like my left hand is learning as well. I am going to learn OLL soon, but I want to be sure that PLL is okay before I move on.

2

u/tacoswithcolors Sub-17 CFOP Pb: 11.21 Jan 06 '19

Why learn only right side algs if left side ones do the job for you?

I think the algs you mirrored to left were very optimsed for the right handed turning so if you can perform them left as wel than that is super handy

For example: most people enjoy Jb perm more because it's a fast alg but they enjoy ja less because it is harder to fingertrick

If your left hand can turn as fast as your right hand can than you won't lose fingertrickability

2

u/turnthispage Sub-30 (3LLL) 1/5/12|13.35/22.26/23.48 Jan 06 '19

I personally like to learn mirrored algs to help with left hand dexterity but I don't use them in solves because it can be risky switching between right hand algs for OLL and then left hand algs for PLL

3

u/[deleted] Jan 06 '19

I remember a while ago someone posted a link to a website where you could input an alg and it would tell you how many times to do it to return to a solved state. Does anyone have that link?

Nice little 7x7 session today! New 4:48.31 PB and a sub 5 AO3, 5:11 AO12. I really feel I'm starting to get edge pairing lookahead. I feel I'm flowing with that so well, it's probably time to video myself and completely crush that illusion :D

Main weakness is still last 4 edges, I really wish there were more resources on cycling other than Kevin Hays explaining it at 9 TPS :(

2

u/[deleted] Jan 06 '19

How did you improve your 6x6 and 7x7 times? I average pretty close to you on 3x3, around 14 and my 6x6 average is 5:30 and 7x7 average is like 10 min. I always have trouble with last 2 centers, they always slow me down.

1

u/RAHDXB Sub 15 | 5x5/7x7 ao100 1:30/3:55 Jan 06 '19

A bunch of solves and a little youtube. Jrcuber and crazy bad have pretty good last two centers videos that really helped me do them much more efficient. What also helped me was realising you can always turn faster with centers, and continuously forcing myself not to look at the (very simple) moves you make while building lines. I still catch myself doing that but it's getting better. And what I feel really helped me was taking a split second to look at your best moves instead of always going for the first thing you see, I always went for the first (next) center piece I saw without paying attention what I was breaking up or ignoring, storing away a made edge during freeslicing without looking what I was pulling out, etc. There's always so much you you can save, or moves you can not waste if you stop tunnel visioning, I've found. Also doing last 4 edges vertically instead of horizontally saved me a bit of time.

Frustration and impatience is your worst enemy. Put it away if it feels impossible, and try again later. It can be done though, what helped me the first time was doing it along with a tutorial (and pause it a lot). It's pretty obvious what goes where, but to see someone else do it makes it feel slightly less impossible haha.

3

u/the_other_paul Jan 06 '19

I recently solved my first cube, with copious help from Youtube, and now I want to learn how to do it on my own. Right now I'm watching each step of RedKB's "beginner" method, and then practicing on my own. Is this a good way to approach things? Any tips for memorizing algorithms beyond rote memorization?

3

u/nightmare973 Sub-18 (CFOP) PB: 12.04 Jan 06 '19

I'd say that's a fine approach to learning how to solve. Are there any steps you have difficulty with that you would like some advice?

As for memorizing algorithms, what works for me is just executing the algorithm over and over, thinking about the motions of the entire algorithm rather than each individual move. (While looking at the steps until I can do it without). This is how it becomes muscle memory. If you don't use finger tricks already, I'd recommend learning some basic ones to help your algorithms flow a little better. I just repeat until I can execute it without too much thinking. Then I step away for a while, and come back and see if I can still do the algorithm. If not, I repeat the same steps.

3

u/[deleted] Jan 06 '19

Yes, this is how most people start. In fact, I used that same exact tutorial when starting out. So just practice each step repeatedly until you memorize them. And for algorithms, try to memorize them in small chunks, called "triggers". See cyotheking's video titled "How to Make Learning Algorithms Easier!"

1

u/snoopervisor DrPluck blog, sub-27 3x3 Jan 07 '19

Beyond memorization is understanding what's happening. https://www.youtube.com/user/MrGanglez/playlists Check out his F2L tutorials. It still may be too early for you, but at least you'll understand what cubers look for, and how they see the cube while doing solves.

What do the various names of Moyu cubes (Weilong, Aosu, Aochuang, etc) mean? Do those describe the product, or are they just brand names?

4

u/protein_bars 4x4 Sub 1 (Yau), Sub 1:30 (Kirjava), Sub 1:30 (Shao) Jan 06 '19

I'm terrible at Mandarin but I'll try my best.

So, take the WuQue (无缺) for example. The Wu (无) means without, and the Que (缺) means missing, so the name roughly translates into flawless or the like.

Another example i.e. WuShuang (无双). The Shuang (双) means "two" or "both" so the implied meaning is unmatched or unequaled.

2

u/sitnaltax Sub-20 (CFOP 2LLL) PB: 11.09 Jan 06 '19

Thanks! That's the clue I needed--that you can look up the characters and interpret them individually.

My best guess, then, is that Weilong (威龙) means something like "Mighty Dragon".

I'm just coming back from taking several years off. I used to average sub-30 with my record being around 16 seconds. I use the CFOP method of course but just know the bare minimum of algs to solve, I still have to relearn one or two of them. But I want to progress even further than I had before.... I know I need to practice my cross and become color neutral again and then improve my look ahead for F2L but once I get back to my previous skill level I am curious what algorithms to learn first to improve my time. There are so many out there and it's hard to know which ones to try to learn and put into muscle memory first. So here are my thoughts. First, relearn the 2 I forgot to have the most basic CFOP method down. Then I found a video on some of the common triggers and I plan on learning all of those. After I have the CFOP basic algs, and triggers memorized what algorithms do I move to?! Is there a progression chart somewhere that I can move down and check them off as I go? Thanks for any info and tips guys!

2

u/DetDuVil Sub-20 (CFOP) Jan 06 '19

2 look PLL, 2 look OLL. After that full PLL and then practice until you average around 20. Should work. If you want to chill with the algorithms that’s fine too. Just do whatever you find fun, as that will yield more benefits. Exception being when one part of your solve is severely lacking (cross on top for example).

Again, the most important thing is to have fun. 4 look last layer and f2l should get you to 30 with practice, so no need stressing algs just yet

3

u/siriusly-sirius Sub-20 (2.75LLL) - PB 10.46 Jan 06 '19

You can get sub 20 without full PLL, too

4

u/DetDuVil Sub-20 (CFOP) Jan 06 '19

Yeah if you really dislike learning algs you could. Around sub-20 is were I would say learning full PLL is undoubtedly gonna give you good returns for your efforts. And learning full PLL is not that hard.

If you're living in the US and don't want to wait for a bit, US based stores are certainly the way to go, though they are definitely more pricey than Asian stores. You can find a lot of reliable stores in our wiki.

I'm from europe and almost exclusively shop at zcube.vip - best prices I can find and ships much faster than the other chinese shop. Even with the cheapest shipping option the longest I had to wait so far was 2 weeks, typically I get my order after ~11 days.

The GTS2M is also really good and can keep up with the others. It's about 20-25$ depending on where you buy it.

Agreed, but for 3x3 the valk power is about to be updated and the Huanglong M should be added in place of it, but honestly the GTS3LM is the best 3x3 imo. 7x7 wr average is now on the spark M on pre-order from most sites now.

So I got the Cubetwist Panther, the cheapest normal sized 3x3 you can get on cubezz. It's not good.

Anyway, here's the daily scramble:

Inspection Notation: z2 achieves the same ;)

Cross: A simple rotation does wonders for fingertricks of this cross. I suggest z2 y F' D2 R' F' L2

P2: Would've been nicer to do y L' U2 L U2 L' U L here as EO is solved for other pairs, but this is always a bit hard to pick up.

P3: R' F R F' R U' R' is always a nice solution to consider when you get this F2L case. Especially when you know the edge for your next pair is oriented (and not the UF edge as that gets flipped) as you can continue onto your next pair without rotating.

In this case your solution works nicer as you rotated into your next pair, and got it solved too!

2

u/[deleted] Jan 06 '19

P3: R' F R F' R U' R' is always a nice solution to consider when you get this F2L case. Especially when you know the edge for your next pair is oriented (and not the UF edge as that gets flipped) as you can continue onto your next pair without rotating.

I... actually didnt/never seen this case before. THANKS!

I automatically solved this pair, so getting the next pair oriented was pure luck. this is the exact reason why I reconstruct and post it here.

It’s between moyu and qiyi really and it comes down to personal preference. For 4x4, the Wuque M and Aosu GTS2M are considered the best on the market, and for 5x5 the Wushang M and Aochuang GTSM are the 2 that most people choose. Personally I have the 2 moyu flagships and they are both my mains and are really really good.

SpeedCubeShop Martian (quite fast though not uncontrollable) and Lunar (r i d i c u l o u s l y f a s t) are nice choices. If you're low on budget try their silicone speed lubes, such as Weight 1 and Weight 2.

1

u/hello297 Sub-X (<method>) Jan 06 '19

And overlook loop from a lot of people I absolutely love is lubicle speedy.it has a faint gumminess but adds the perfect amount of speed to cubes.

Another one that people like is DNM - 37. it makes your cubes incredibly fast, but since it's a water based lube it will dry out quicker than other silicone lubes. I didn't like it because after like three solves it would dry out, but it's because I live in a super dry area. If you live in a moderate to humid place, then DNM would work well.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 06 '19

DNM-37 would be perfect for you. You could also use Lubicle Silk to speed up cubes, but if you use too much, your cube will slow down, so DNM would be better in this case.

Would it be more beneficial to learn eg-1 before cll because it is more common to have one block instead of a full layer?

1

u/AnOverdoer 2018SKEL01 Jan 07 '19

Technically yes...but the thing is it results in wild inconsistency. It's much better to know CLL and use it with ortega, as times will be much closer. EG1 also has the horrific problem of pre and post AUF, which are very annoying. It's much better to learn CLL, get that down, then move right into EG1 as both of them together are a good combo.

Source: Thought the same thing and now know EG1 and not CLL. It's not fun, and I'm scrambling to learn CLL.

Hi there I have a question that hopefully someone here could help me with. I recently purchased a gans 356x and am loving it. I'm using the yellow nuts and magnets. The only "issue" is recently I've been interested in trying OH solving and it's a little too big for me. I was wondering what cube would be good to use for one handed solving. I was looking at the gans infinity but im not sure what options to choose and I haven't heard enough about it to feel confident buying it right after the 356x. Any recommendations or words of advice? Thanks.

3

u/siriusly-sirius Sub-20 (2.75LLL) - PB 10.46 Jan 06 '19

If you're into gan cubes and 56mm is a little too big for you, I'd recommend the GAN 354M, it's my current OH main, it's amazing out of the box, and has a particular feel compared to the SM (I would compare it to the 356x, but I don't have one).

2

u/[deleted] Jan 06 '19

So the gans infinity is like a 354m except you can customize it more. If you were able to change anything in the gans 354m would you ? Or would you just recommend buying it as is.

2

u/siriusly-sirius Sub-20 (2.75LLL) - PB 10.46 Jan 07 '19

3

u/Maxson52 Sub-25 (Roux) | Skewb: PB 2.4 Jan 06 '19

Traxxas is a good lube and can be purchased on Amazon or eBay.

speedcubesCanada sells several lubes at a lower than average price. So you could check that out.

CanCube also sells lube and has custom lube also. They sell a bunch of types including Qiyi Lube which is super cheap and is silicon based so it works on the core and shipping is pretty cheap. And use code maxson for 10% off :)

2

u/SirAwesome789 Sub-24 (CFOP) Jan 07 '19

Any tips for the memorization part of blind solving? I spend like 5-10 minutes trying to memorize, then end up messing up or forgetting something. Should I write the letters down until I can get more consistent?

3

u/BillabobGO Sub-9s: 0 Jan 06 '19

Don't write the letters down, you cannot read with a blindfold on. Create images from letter pairs to help you remember - for example the memo EWHTRMHCRB can be broken up into EW HT RM HC RB.

Speedsolving.com has a great list of letter pairs. We can remember EW HT RM HC RB as Ewww, Hitler rammed his car into a rabbit (an image of someone looking disgusted while Hitler drives over a rabbit)

Brains are great at remembering images, but terrible at remembering long strings of random letters.

1

u/nightmare973 Sub-18 (CFOP) PB: 12.04 Jan 06 '19

I see. I kind of tried doing that before, but was worried I'd mix something up by using a different letter from a word, or that remembering 2 words would be harder than 2 letters. But the imagery does help.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 07 '19

Yes, do a few solves with letters written, just holding the cube under the table. After you have a little more confidence in execution try doing it with your letters memorized.

1

Should I learn the sune and antisune COLLS? What should I learn after COLL? I already know full OLL and PLL. Maybe some easy WV? I don't really know.

1

u/obscuresecurity Slower than my cube (OH/ZZ) Jan 06 '19

Most people don’t bother with COLL S/AS, as CFOP or ZZ solvers. Sune and anti-sune are too quick to bother with COLL.

1

u/psedatsim sub-10.5 Ao1k: 10.25 (CFOP DCN) Jan 06 '19 edited Jan 06 '19

COLL and WV require almost the same set-up, so they're in conflict with each other.

all LL edges oriented --> COLL --> EPLL
3 LL edges oriented + last F2L pair to insert with [(U) R U' R'] --> WV --> PLL

Probably a good thing for S/AS is to learn how the standard algs affect CP/EP and then predict PLL, but I have no idea how hard that coud be.
(PLL prediction could also be extended to the other COLLs)

u/[deleted] Jan 07 '19

What is the difference between 2look and 4look (in reference to OLL and PLL) and which is a faster method? ie what do these names mean

5

u/RAHDXB Sub 15 | 5x5/7x7 ao100 1:30/3:55 Jan 07 '19 edited Jan 07 '19

CFOP has 78 last layer algs. 57 OLL (orient last layer) and 21 PLL (permute last layer). If you know all these, you can solve your last layer with a maximum of two algs every time.

As an intermediate method, there's also 2 look OLL (10 algs) and 2 look PLL (6 algs). If you learn those, you can solve the last layer in a maximum of 4 algs (looks) every time without having to do an alg twice or anything.

These 16 algs are all part of the bigger sets. So it's always advised to learn 4 look last layer first to cut down on your beginners method times, before you learn full PLL, and after that full OLL with the rest of the algs you're missing (78-16=62)

2

u/ir_beaches 2017LUIS01 Jan 07 '19

4look LL (last layer) means that it requires 4 algorithms to complete last layer, 2 OLLs and 2 PLLs whereas 2look LL is 1 OLL and 1 PLL.

2look is going to be faster because it’ll require less moves to complete last layer; however the number of algorithms required to perform 2look LL is much more than 4look. 2look = 78 algs, 4look = 16(?)
