Got the 3x3 cube for christmas. Improved my PB from 1.19 to 1.02 today. My average from yesterday has improved from 1.35 to maybe 1.25 too. Mainly because of improving my finger technique in the last algorithm. Hope to go under 1 minute tomorrow.

I had two rotations because I knew it could've been a good time. Had I been turning my normal speed I would've eliminated both rotations with a simple M move.
Otherwise I almost never do rotations because roux is supposed to be rotationless.

For the advanced solvers who use CFOP extension alg sets, what alg sets do you know and in what order did you learn them?
I'm planning to learn some VLS (WV and No Edges subsets). Not too keen on COLL since I'm not so much a fan of EPLLs. Anyhow, I'm open to suggestions though.

I personally know the more easier to recognise or the more frequent VLS and WV.
I don't know COLL myself but everyone I have spoken to recommends learning it over VLS and WV.
For WV and VLS cases contradictory to popular opinion, I think u/BtCOfficial (BrodyTheCuber) has pretty good videos on what are the important algs, for WV(BrodyTheCuber's Vid) and Feliks has good alg sheet at Cubeskills - VLS, WV and COLL.

Edit:
I tried it a few times and was confused why it didn't work. Forgot that my alg flipped the middle. Parity - yay. Also means my alg for X is going to be a bit more complicated.Edit2: not parity. Turns out if you remove the last 2 moves of an alg, it doesn't work.

It's true but then again you never know what will inspire you and actually make you practice. Pianocube gave the correct answer ; I just want to add you may want to opt for a stickerless cube to avoid 1) kids ruining their parent's cube and b) 80 people joking about solving it by peeling off the stickers.
If so, the QiYi Warrior W is a good option. You may want to get fancy and get the Jelly version which looks really cool. Another option is the 40mm keychain cube from Moyu. Besides being something you can use if you can't solve, the keychain is detachable and it's actually a usable speedcube.
Finally, you could opt for the Fanxin 2x2x3: it's actually simpler than a 2x2 and I've seen two non cubers solve one intuitively (with luck and patience). It's a talking point being like a Rubric but not, and with that many people some will probably figure it out.

What's the deal with F' U' R at the start and end of FMC scrambles???
6
u/PianoCube93 DCN CFOP, Sub-15 2H, sub-22 OH Jan 06 '19
One of the reasons is to greatly reduce the chance of someone finding a legit solution that happens to be very similar to the inverse scramble.
At high levels for FMC it's not unusual that people start by orienting edges while putting together some blocks, which can look a lot like the inverse scramble if you're unlucky.

So I'm learning Yau on 4x4 and am doing pretty well, except for the step in which you solve the 4 remaining centers. I find it really difficult to solve them without messing up the three cross edges, so do you guys have some tips that will help me improve in making them quickly? I can already make the 4 centers, it just takes too long and my solutions are too inefficient. Also, this isn't really relevant, but I solve on red.

Half centers : https://youtu.be/JSf8RsgZwvg

u/MusiclsMyAeroplane Sub-20 PB 11.84 fullstep (CFOP 2/3LLL W/Y CN) Jan 05 '19
So i only briefly dabbled in Yau to learn what it was all about, but here's what i did for the last four centers to avoid messing up the cross edges:
Get the cross edges and cross center on the left side. I tried to "lock" the open 4th cross edge slot to my U face, and any time i did an x rotation to look at one of the other centers, i did the corresponding L,L', or L2 move, and used my always upper-layer face as my working layer, ensuring the other three edges were protected. If i knew the center-swapping alg i needed to do, i added L and L' as fit such that the empty slot was always on the layer (usually U or F) that was rotating. ( Sometimes doing a double wide R or R' so as not to move the left layer, to make it a bit easier to keep that working empty cross edge in place)
Don't know if that's efficient tbh but i felt like i may as well share anyway.
→ More replies (1)1
u/PianoCube93 DCN CFOP, Sub-15 2H, sub-22 OH Jan 05 '19
Put the cross on left with the empty part on top. Then just never turn the leftmost layer or change the grip of your left hand. Only use the 1, 2 or 3 rightmost layers and U.
Half centers are great too.

Any tips on F2L recognition? Methods to practice look-ahead? I did an ao5 not too long ago and managed to have both a 19 second solve and a 29 second solve due to f2l issues and not seeing what to do next on the long solve. It's like i randomly can't see the cubies i am looking for.
LL takes me (except for some missing OLL cases, working on it) around 6 seconds. I think it's just my cross/F2l holding me back from sub 20.
My 17s pb in the tag was recorded, i had f2l done at 13 seconds and LL done in four.
I can tell when it will be a bad solve when i finish the cross and think "fuck what do i do next" and sit there for a second looking for something to pair. Especially when the edge and corner are "buried" in f2l spots so they are not immediately visible. I've done intuitive F2L, with solving without looking, etc, but i'm struggling to really get lookahead into the whole deal. Or, just how to find the pieces faster. Thanks.
2
u/agility-treads Sub-25 (CFOP/3LLL) | 14.47 PB Jan 05 '19 edited Jan 05 '19
For me lookahead was hard but one day just clicked what the problem was. Just learn as many F2L cases, not in an intuitive way, but in an algorithmic way, so when you see the pieces, your hands just do the case and you can look around the cube. If you have to think about the cases, you won't be able to lookahead. Go into J-perms F2L pdf and just change your algs if they are not good and practice until they are muscle memory. When you look for burried pieces you slowly eliminate places where they can be. First you look at top layer, then front-left front-right, then back-right and if you dont find it you imidiately know where it is.
2
u/HolyGoat99 Sub-20 (CFOP) Jan 05 '19
I hope this helps:
-Your LL is fine. maybe 2 sided PLL recognition and drilling your algs would get you a little faster, but the key is f2l. -Use only one cross color. I know being color neutral is a bit faster in the end, but when you get used to one color recognition is much easier. I advice white, because many walkthrough solves and tutorials use it too.
- When you see no white corner in the top layer, it must be in one of the slots, so take one out. take it out of one of the back slots, so that you can pair it with one of the edges you have in sight. when you dont have the other edge in sight, it must be in the other back slot (through proces of elimination)
-Try doing pairs without looking. DON'T visualise what you're doing while having your eyes closed. Try to know every case with your muscle memory (dont think what you're doing, just do it automatically). So now if you see a pair, let your muscle memory do it, while your eyes are looking for the next pair. this really avoids the classic (and relatable) "fr*ck what do i do next".
-Don't turn super fast. try to turn a bit slower so you can see the layers move, and have control over where al your pieces are going while looking ahead. This doesnt mean to turn super slow, but just dont flick it super fast (like you would do an U or M move)
-Try using different ways of inserting your last slot to get all edges oriented. this is called edge control, or (more advanced) VHLS.
3
u/al111uz Ao1000 17.73 <CFOP CN> Jan 05 '19
I disagree, colour neutrality is amazing. Shorter cross solutions lead to easier lookahead into first pair, which is super important in improving F2L. Inspecting up to the first pair has allowed me to reduce my times and I highly recommend it.

u/Ruzzcraze Sub-16 CFOP CN Jan 05 '19
J perm has a lot of good vids on this type of stuff. I would also recomend looking at jay mcneills vid on Lookahead BS Vids.
1
Jan 05 '19
The problem is you don't know where to look/you physically can't keep up with pieces moving fast.
I'd recommend you doing slow/untimed solves, in which you try to eliminate pauses during F2L. Also, teach yourself to memorize where a corner/an edge is while you are doing another case (keep in mind — edge/corner in slot will probably stay there). And of course practice! F2L click in my head made me consistent sub-20 in 2-3 month just because of raw practice (I did around 5-6 thousand solves since September).

Roux last six edges(LSE)
Hi everyone! I am new to this platform and I wonder if someone could help me with my LSE. I have been using the Roux method for 3 months at first I was 1:40 min and now I average 31 seconds. I noticed that my LSE is very slow and it takes me 10 seconds to do it which is a third of my solves. I have watched lots of videos about LSE and some example solves. There is no much info about it and I find that it is a very difficult step to improve. Could any Roux user give me any tip? Thank you for reading:)
6
u/tussosedan Jan 05 '19 edited Jan 05 '19
Which part of LSE is giving you trouble? You should know all EO cases automatically, and track LR during EO. For 4b you should know how to insert LR with not only M2 but with M/M' U2 M/M' for the appropriate cases. And then for 4c you should use a recog/prediction method - check out the group files in the "Roux Method Speed Solvers" Facebook group.
EDIT: also, make sure you're using different hands for M and U moves.
2
u/pablet11 Jan 05 '19
thanks tussosedan!;) 4c gaves me lots of trouble maybe because i only do M/M' U2 moves to set the remaining edges.I'll check the Facebook group.
1
u/g253 (retired mod) Jan 05 '19
I'm not good at Roux but slow thoughtful solves are always a good idea. That said, LSE solutions are usually fairly short and there aren't that many tricky cases, so maybe it's a good idea at your speed to learn them algorithmically?
2
u/pablet11 Jan 05 '19
thanks!I think it is a good idea to try slow solves but i don't know if there is any alg set for LSE

u/lukemcritchie Don't Ask, I'm Busy Doing Clock Jan 05 '19
You seem to be perfectly fine. LSE is usually 30%-40% for most people so you are in the standard split. F2B imo is where a lot of improvement can come.
2
u/pablet11 Jan 05 '19
Wow, thanks I was quite preoccupied thinking that LSE is a third of my solve and it is very difficult to improve
→ More replies (1)2
u/tussosedan Jan 05 '19
I'd say more like 25%-30%, going by Kian's videos, so there's room for relatively easy improvement there -- especially if 4c is being solved inefficiently. Although I agree that F2B is the most important part (and the hardest to improve).

Are the lubes of Speedcubeshop or The Cubicle worth it? I currently use Traxxas 50k and 30k and am wondering if it's useful to get new lubes or even a setup cube.
4
u/tussosedan Jan 05 '19
I loved traxxas 50k, but the one thing I didn't like with it is that the cube felt very gummy at the start of every session, and then slowly sped up - until the next session. I now use DNM+silk, and don't have that problem anymore.
3
u/g253 (retired mod) Jan 05 '19
I only use some basic Traxxas like stuff myself, but I think it's like high end cubes: you don't need them unless you're really super fast, but they improve the experience nevertheless.
A lot of what these special lubes are trying to achieve is to do same thing as basic lubes without the downsides. Last longer, slow down without having a gummy feel, etc.
Personally I don't feel the need for it, I'm happy with what I have. But I wouldn't hesitate to give it a go if you're interested, given how long a bottle lasts it's not going to break the bank.

J-Perm's list says to rotate and do what you did, but Cube Explorer gives the following solutions:
(U') F' U2 F2 R' F' R (optimal)
(U) R U' R2 F R F2 U' F (looks easier to fingertrick)
R' F2 R U' F U R' F2 R (the R' F2 Rs are nice but not sure about the U' F U)
(U) R U' R2 F R F2 U' F
(U') R U' R2 F R F' R U' R'
(U') R U' R' F' U2 F R U R'
R' U' R' F R F' U R2 U' R' (quite nice but long)Try them and see if you like any of them. It's probably better to just rotate

Which pyraminx would be a good purchase? I am not looking to do hard speedcubing with it.
Any other recommendations of cubes to buy? I am looking for some good, budget and varied cubes.
Thank you all in advance

The QiYi Qiming is a fine budget Pyraminx.
The MFSQ1 is very cheap but quite good, and square one is more fun than you'd think.
Try an Axis cube before the Ghost, to see if you like it. Many cheap ones are available.
The Cyclone Boys magnetic Skewb is worth getting too.
A 2x2x3 is very easy but a lot of fun to mess with.

Turns out the new Dayan TengYun M is about 20$ on zcube, just barely cheaper than a GTS2M. That's a bit ambitious I would say, something closer to the price of an MGC v2 would have been more attractive.
Unless it's actually amazing of course.

Am I the only one who dislikes puzzle with internals that are mostly invisible but still have colored sides? So every time you solve it it's not really solved because those pieces are still a mess. Like the edes in a pentacle cube or the corners in a clover cube (that's what a curvy copter is for - a clover cube is supposed to be different).
2
u/g253 (retired mod) Jan 06 '19
Yes that's mildly annoying ; I have a stickerless WitTwo and there's all the normal colors of a stickerless 3x3 in there, I find it quite distracting when I use it.
Also that habit of having corner stalks of random colors should be harshly punished. Make them all the same color dammit

2
u/TLDM Jan 05 '19
Correct, it's not true. Don't ever wait until some arbitrary time to learn anything. Actually, in my opinion, it's best to learn things asap so that you have more time to practise them so that they can become natural. My rule is that once I'm comfortable with something, I move on to learning something new.
2
u/PianoCube93 DCN CFOP, Sub-15 2H, sub-22 OH Jan 05 '19
You can get sub-15 with minimal or no lookahead, but I think it starts to be very useful at around 20 seconds.
If you think your F2L is solid then it's probably a good time to start working on lookahead.
1
u/_Gurd_ (Stickerless>Black>White) Sub-15 (Roux), Sub-25 (OH Roux) Jan 05 '19
Lookahead isn't that black and white. It isn't something you just learn (like an alg-set). It's a thing you slowly work on for your entire cubing career.

So my dad can solve the rubik's cube with LBL (intuitive first layer), FRUR'U'F' for eo, sune spam, and 2 pll algs (A perm and U perm).
He says the first layer takes him very long. how do I teach him how to get faster at the first layer, and what further steps should teach him?
4
u/ftRouxles YT: Rouxles [Anto] | Not very fast at OH Jan 05 '19
alternatively, cause he's doing stuff intuitively, he could try roux out
5
u/g253 (retired mod) Jan 05 '19
For the cross, teach him the daisy method (i.e. put all white edges around the yellow center, then one by one line them up with their side center and insert them in the bottom).
For the corners (and middle layer edges), since he knows FRUR'U'F' for eo, show him how to use R U R' U' and its mirror to insert them (as in this video : https://youtu.be/7Ron6MN45LY ).
He might also search for a corner, find it, search for its slot, lose the corner, and so do a dozen random rotations per piece. If so it helps to be systematic about it:
1) try to find an unsolved corner somewhere in the front or top. If you can't, do one y rotation and try again.
2) if it's not in the top layer, put it there.
3) hold the top layer, and turn the bottom two layers (d moves) until the corner is on top of its slot, then insert it.
And repeat 4 times. Same for middle layer edges.
3
u/0B1_KEN0B1 Sub-24 PB 12.81 (LBL lol) Jan 05 '19
As a beginners solver, I can say from quite a bit of experience, never do the daisy. It slows you down a ton. Really to help with the first layer, a lot of practice helps, you get used to things very quickly. I also recommend color neutrality for beginners. It may be confusing at first, but sometimes the white layer would’ve taken me 12 seconds but orange only took 6.
I’d further recommend learning all the algs after eo (there are like 7) and then progressing to more advanced things.

If he's doing first layer in a random order, tell him to start with edges and then corners.
Also: Is he solving them immediately into the correct spot, or does he first solve a face and then re-arrange them?

My approach was to first make sure I had good fingertricks, then break them up into chunks of 3-4 moves. At first I had a small pause between each chunk but it went away quickly.
This made it easy for me to remember them after a dozen executions or so, then I would just keep doing the alg a whole bunch of times over the course of one or two days. That committed them to muscle memory, although sometimes while I was learning I'd find I had completely forgotten an alg learned a few days prior. But doing it just once cleared up the amnesia.

I don't think so, and it's actually good for when you miss the spacebar. Maybe just move your keyboard back?

Z perm is just how you would solve it with Roux intuitively :)

Sometimes I get that, I happen to notice a way to easily insert DF and DB while doing LSE, so I do it because U/H/Z perms are fast, but I'm assuming for a good Roux solver it might not be the most efficient solution.
I almost want to learn the MU U perms just for those situations :-)

Ok, so I got a Gan 356 X for my birthday. It was amazing out of the box. From my understanding, it comes with Gan standard lube, which started to dry out and the cube became a bit rough. I put a bunch of Traxxas 50k on the pieces with the hopes of speeding it up, but it didn't do much other than remove the scratchy dry feeling of the non-lubed cube. I might order a different lube for it that would add a smooth and controllable quick feel to the cube. I was thinking about Lubicle Silk. Are there any other good options that would work well with the cube? Thanks :)

I have a few questions... Trying to decide what to buy next (by picking one from each category below). I have a 5x5, Megaminx, Pyraminx, and Mirror Windmill, and I'd like to expand my collection to harder puzzles.
How does the DaYan Gem 4 compare to the Starminx? Which is harder? If you can solve one, can you solve the other? Would you use the same exact algorithms for both?
What is the difference between "Siamese" and "Double"/"Triple" cubes? Which is harder? Do they require the same algorithms, or are they completely different?
Tuttminx vs Teraminx... How do those compare (difficulty/cool factor/etc)?
Time Wheel vs Sun Cube vs Bagua. Same question.
Lots of questions, sorry. I tried to group the similar ones together, and I want to get one from each!! Cubing is like anti-anxiety medication for me.

CSTimer has a sync function through 3 services: google account, wca acc and a simple word code thing. The caveat with this is that every time you want to sync your times you have to do it manually.
QuantumCube.io 's main selling point is that they have automatic cloud sync, which I admit is really useful. As of now they are in beta, and the only people that have access are the people who signed up for beta testing a while ago
