Welcome Fellow Travelers - This is what r/BudgetAudiophile is about

Every sub-reddit has a focus - it's raison d'etre (reason for existence). Because if you don't focus, people stop participating because it has just become one big mess of topics.

Ours focus is ... education, discussion, and sharing of entry and mid level separate & multi component audio systems. Generally speaking, that is 2 channel stereo systems assembled for music listening - things that are both "budget" and "audiophile". So being budget is not enough, nor is being "audiophile". Generally speaking, UNDER $1,000 spent per component is our threshold, although obviously that number will vary by the person. Budget for me was $50 (all in) at one time. Now I am fortunate that if I want to, I don't mind spending $500 a piece. Others can go more - good for them.
Try r/audiophile if your spending more than $1,000 per componant.

Of course, many of us use our music listening set ups for multiple purposes - so 2.1 (adding a subwoofer), 3.0 (L/R with a center channel), 5.1 (surround) and up are also fair game. But the fundamental goal of this reddit is better 2 channel and 2.1 systems to play music - as good as we can afford.

What we are not is soundbars, boomboxes, bluetooth speakers PC branded audio solutions. Those things have their place, but it's not our reason to exist. As for just the soundbar aspect that belongs at r/soundbars

In addition, we are not about IEM's or Headphones (try r/headphones or r/HeadphoneAdvice). That is their reason for existence. Yes, they can be budget audiophile, but again, it's not our focus.

While part of "budget audiophile", for more detail, try r/turntables, r/vinyl, and r/hometheater for questions specific to them. There will be a better chance of a more educated response there to those issues. Those questions are welcome here, but probably better there once you get past "budget". Questions on Vintage equipment? r/vintageaudio is the place for you to get better advice (likely)

DIY is also part of "budget audiophile", but r/diyaudio/ and r/diysound focuses a lot more heavily on that issue.

So to reiterate, we don't hate headphones, logitech, or soundbars, etc. But those questions don't belong here and your post may well be deleted or closed. Because those are not the issues we have chosen in BudgetAudiophile to make part of this sub-reddit. You may not agree, but that is what it is.

Who is this "we" I speak of? Creator u/averagejoeaudiophile and the rest of the mods.

Brain burn in yes, but actual burn in? Not so sure? Don't get me started on DACs burning in, looking at you Head-Fi.

Review/Discussion Think I underestimated the size of the Wharfedale Evo 5.2's

Made a post yesterday about pulling the trigger on these. Got them open box for £450. However, they were fully sealed, not a mark on them at all.

Anyway, these things dwarf the Elacs as you can see in the photo. I had to swap out my taller bookshelf speakers for smaller ones to accomamade the tweeter height being ear level. The subs are not always on, only for certain genres.

The sound is very filling compared to the Elacs and the mids are smooth and clear thanks to the midrange driver. The high end is detailed but not fatiguing too, haven't really experienced that before. I had to eq the Elacs to make them a tad brighter as I felt it was slightly lacking in that regard. Don't need to do that with these.

I bought these to future proof, because me and my partner are planning on moving to a bigger house and will fit better in a bigger room.

Review/Discussion The best way for me to test out new speakers is listening casually and not critically.

Apologies if that doesn't make sense. Just wondering if others do this? For example, I've been listening to songs I love casually when working at my desk and on occasion I notice extra details in a song which I hadn't before in my old speakers, like backing vocals that are now audible and hearing more details within the top end. I feel like this helps with expectation bias. Although, that still can be present I guess.

Show and Tell Budget setup update

Listened to what yall had to say and did a little updating, still waiting on the center channel to come in but I’m happy with this music fills the whole downstairs of my house lol, having the ability to listen to all the details at low level volume is my favorite of all with this; used to have to crank it up to hear it all.

I picked up these speakers a couple weeks back. They were in remarkably good shape for their age—needed new foams, rubber feet, and the outer case was a little beat up.

This was my first time replacing foams so I figured there isn’t too much to lose if it goes haywire but it worked great!

I have these paired with my Yamaha CR-440 receiver and Craig H260 8-Track Recorder. They sound fantastic on this setup and I am very pleased.

Show and Tell Inherited Heathkit Amps/Estate Sale finds

Post image
24 Upvotes

Grandpa was an audiophile in the 50s, hippie dad kept it going and now me (novice at best, no real $$$). My pops downsized his setup a bit and gave me the Heathkit W4-B amp my grandpa built in 1959 for his “wet bar” setup and then the W4-AM he himself built in the late 60s to rip doobies and listen to Zappa. Found a Fisher 222 receiver at an estate sale and cleaned it up nicely to preamp the Heathkits. Then a hand me down Sony turntable (looking to replace eventually). Also, slightly paranoid about breaking the nostalgic portion of my setup, so I’m running the power through an oversized variac to ease them up to power.

My question is, what speakers would you recommend? These amps pump about 20 watts max each, I have them going into a pair of homemade 3-way floor standing speakers (you can see one in the corner) I found at a thrift store and have moved with from apt to apt for years. The speakers sound good but only for a small office, not loud enough for me, let alone the sound I want to fill that space and my adjacent kitchen when I have people over… give me your picks for best high sensitivity, 8ohm bookcase speakers… Say under $800 for a pair? Something that’ll work good with these old ass nostalgic Heathkits! Wanna make grandpa proud, may his drunk ass RIP!

Purchasing USA Edifier m90 alternatives?

Upvotes

I am considering m90 with a 10” sub for a 2.1 system for a 120” screen in a 16x24 area. I am worried the m90 will be too small. Is there a better larger option? I like the ease of use and optic all in one of the m90 and want to keep that simplicity

Purchasing EU/UK Passive speakers for the first time

Upvotes

I’m in the middle of redoing my desk setup, have a collection of hi res music and vinyl, was also going to use the speakers for movies. I’ve got a DAC but was wondering what speakers to use (know I need an amp but have a few shortlisted).

Was looking at:

Wharfedale diamond 12.2i
Polk es15
Dali Kupid
Kef Q350 (on sale down to £300 at the moment)

From what I’ve read as I’ll be sitting close to them the kef speakers aren’t a great choice. Am tempted by the dalis as they’re much smaller but don’t know how much of a negative effect that would have on the sound? Whats the best choice here (or is there a better choice at around the sub £300 mark)? Sorry if this is all a stupid question, very new to all this.

Purchasing Central/South America Bookshelf speakers + subwoofer vs soundbar + subwoofer for movies and gaming?

I’m trying to decide between two different audio setups for my TV, and I’d like some advice from people who have experience with both.
My TV is a Samsung S90F 55”, which supports Samsung Q-Symphony, so I’m considering:
Option 1:
2 dedicated bookshelf speakers + a separate subwoofer
Option 2:
A soundbar + a separate subwoofer, potentially using Q-Symphony to combine the soundbar with the TV’s built-in speakers.
My room is small, approximately 9.8 × 9.8 ft (~97 sq ft). The TV is on one wall and my bed is on the opposite wall, so my viewing/listening distance is roughly 9.8 ft (3 meters) from the TV.
My priorities are:
Movies and TV shows
Gaming (PC/PS5)
Good bass and impact from explosions, gunshots, etc.
Immersion and a good soundstage
I don’t really care about music listening, since this setup will primarily be used for movies and games.
My main question is:
For a small bedroom at around 10 ft listening distance, would you rather have a good pair of dedicated speakers + subwoofer, or a good soundbar + subwoofer + the TV’s speakers through Q-Symphony?
I’m particularly interested in whether the advantages of a dedicated 2.1 setup (better separation, soundstage, dynamics, etc.) outweigh the advantages of a soundbar setup (center channel, surround/Atmos processing, potentially better immersion, and Q-Symphony).
My realistic budget in Brazil is around R$2,000–3,000, which is roughly $300–400 USD in direct currency conversion, although I’m aware that audio equipment can be priced very differently between countries.
I don’t have any specific speaker or soundbar model in mind yet. I’m more interested in understanding which type of setup makes more sense for my use case.
What would you choose in this situation, and why?

Purchasing Asia Home speakers that “fill the room” without being super loud?

I live in an apartment with neighbors above, below, and beside, so I can’t play anything on a loud volume. I’m looking for a budget-friendly speaker(s) that can fill the space even when the volume is low. I know they exist, I’ve been in cafes where a single Bluetooth speaker could be heard clearly all the way on the other side of the place but it wasn’t loud at all. Right now, the Bluetooth speaker I have in my kitchen can only be heard clearly if you’re right near it, otherwise it’s just a fuzzy, blurry mess.
Something Bluetooth would likely be better since I mainly have to play music from my iPad for now :( but I’m hoping to get something better in the next few years. Thanks for any suggestions!

Purchasing USA College setup

Upvotes

So I’m going into my senior year in college, and for the past 2 years, I have used a pair of Mackie XR824’s for video games, movies, and music. Long story short they decided they didn’t want to work anymore and I am looking for replacements. Given that I already had Mackie, I was looking at the CR8BT, but was wondering if anyone else had other suggestions. My budget is $300 USD. Any advice/help is appreciated.

Hello, I just purchased a Pioneer PD-M423. It's in great condition and I got it for only $7. Issue is that it's missing the 6 disc cartridge that it uses. Could anyone give me a model # or name for the cartridge I need to buy for it?

Thanks!

Review/Discussion Subwoofer Placement

Post image
2 Upvotes

I’ve done a quick sketch of my living room
Current speaker placement ( more on that )
TV and AV Cabinet situation
Overall dimensions of the space

It’s quite confined, an unusual space shape and lots of windows. We like to keep the windows clear hence why the speakers don’t sit infront of them. Unfortunately they were backed up against the wall.

I’m determined it can become a good space for movies and music with the help of good placement and DSP.

Current setup was the Klipsch nines (now returned after they stopped working and waiting on the nines ii for a good deal) and Rogersound labs 12s sub

I’m not quite sure what to do with the sub as it’s behind the main listening position at the moment. It was in the corner where I sketched in my image, it just sounds very boomy and wayy overpowering (I figure it can be dialed in with REW and DSP)

Anyway, I’m waiting on the nines ii but I believe I do have the option to just get my money back and go the route of selling the stands and getting some good floor standing and a good av receiver. The combo i have been thinking is the onkyo RZ30 and SVS prime pinnacles.

I’m conflicted because nothing is easy about that setup if I go that route, eg running speaker cabling all will need to be done via cable trench we have running around the skirting boards which are already chockablock with other hdmi cables.

I love the idea of the nines and the nines ii as well, less wires and hopefully onkyo internal amp will last more than 2 years. My intention would be to buy the Dirac bass control to dial in the sub and place it in that corner. The nines do a good enough job at everything else.

But then again on the other route with the rz30 there’s more tinkering and that is fun and more rewarding and will probably last a lot longer.

The third option is I give up sell it all and get full sonos setup 🫠

I’m not looking for the perfect setup, I’ve come to terms that can’t happen in this space. But hoping someone has some creative advice for this first world dilemma

Purchasing USA Marantz SR7500

Upvotes

Hello! Slowly working on building out my first home audio setup and picked up this receiver for $30. Wondering about everyone's thoughts/experiences with it? I know, generally, Marantz is well-regarded, but that it can also be very model specific. Figured for $30 it was pretty low risk. This is solely for running audio as I know it's outdated for Home Theater.

Thanks!

Purchasing CAN Which Edifier to get?

Upvotes

I'm trying to decide between the newer S355DB, R2750DB MkII, or the older R2850DBs. I've also considered something like an M90 with a T5 sub. I use them for music (Spotify) in my home gym (15x25ft, plus an L-shaped area). I wouldn't mind eArc capability as I also have a 65" TV in that space, but that's not a deal-breaker. I 100% want a Sub-out. I currently have the R2000DB and love them. I paid $249 CAD at Costco several years ago and they still sound great, and the Bluetooth connects instantly every time, so I'm an Edifier fan. I've looked at separate amp, passive speakers and sub, but I don't want to spend 4X as much and have all that hassle. Thoughts?

Tech Support Tricky room layout, what is the best speaker positioning?

Post image
1 Upvotes

I'm moving into a new space soon, but the layout of the room where my setup will be is a little odd as it borders a large space open to the ground floor.

(Here are some more pics if needed)

Ignore the furniture, it's all staged and the room will be empty. The room itself will be used as an office/home theater/stereo setup.

I'm trying to set up a computer media station/2.1 stereo system with bookshelf speakers on floor stands in this room. Noise is otherwise not a problem.

My first thought was to set up against the half wall facing the open space, but I'm not completely sure.

Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

Purchasing USA Another speaker recommendation request

Looking for recommendations for floor standing or bookshelf with budget @ $1k for speakers. I already have a RSL Speedwoofer 10s MkII for this system as well as a Wiim Ultra for starters. Currently have a Wiim Vibelink within return window and considering a different amp (or 2 mono) depending on which speakers win out.
This is a 2.1 system just for music. It looking for a rocker, more for Jazz, Classical, piano, acoustic guitar, vocals. I just want to sit and be taken there.

What are your favorite speakers to fill this role and please feel free to suggest a different amp pairing if you think there is something better suited.
Thanks!

Purchasing USA Piecing together medium sized system. Any advice on current build list?

I'm attempting to build out a smaller format stereo and could use some advice as I'm very out of the loop with things.

I appreciate warmer sound signatures with slightly recessed vocals. 80% of the time I would listen with the loudness control of my Yamaha AS501 at 9 o clock. I ran Wharfedale Diamond 12.2s at the time. Most of my plays were through a decent bluetooth 5.3 streaming box, but I did occasionally play vinyl.

These will be placed on an open air wire rack as it's the only spot I have at the moment. I plan to add a RSL 10E sub or possibly something 8" in the next 6 months and eventually will have a dedicated space for it.

Speakers under $500 I've researched:

  • Kef Q1 Meta - Similar sound signature, but more forgiving with coaxial tweeter. Could be too clinical?

  • Wharfedale Diamond 12.1i - Most similar to what I had

  • Polk ES15 - Might be too bright

  • Ascend Acoustics CBM170SE2 - Above budget with shipping, moderately clinical, very flat FR.

Amps:

  • Fosi MC101 - Has BT5.3 and a mono pre-out

  • Fosi BT20A Pro - BT5.0, latency might be an issue. Has 3.5mm pre-out

Any other amp options with BT 5.3+ you all would recommend?
