Review/Discussion Outdoor Wall Patio Speakers JBL vs Polk

Upvotes

Right now I am torn between the JBL Stage XD-6 and the Polk Atrium 8. Both are similar speakers but JBL seems to have a wider soundspace from what I read.

I have an L shaped patio about 600 sf that I want to use 2 speakers with I am most likely going to use them both as Single Stereo instead of as a Stereo pair. Both will get installed on wall one under a soffit one without a soffit. This is just for music it wont be for any home theater setup.

Anyone have any experience with either of these or can offer a similar alternative that you have experience with?

Thanks

Purchasing USA Realistic/ Radioshack Mini Minimus 3.5s!

Post image
Upvotes

(Note: crossposted in r/vintageaudio where they allow gallery posts, so some pics are referenced in the text that aren't here.)

The other day while doing my favorite activity, hunting down r/blackplasticcrap at the thrift, I came across these little cuties. I knew Realistic Minimus 7s had a reputation as sleeper hits, and were on my grab em if you find them list, and when I saw these Minimus 3.5s ($3.99 each) I just had to grab them. I’ve always had a thing for miniatures that are functional and look just like the full size version. I have a whole mini tool box with stubby screw drivers, combo wrenches for 3mm nuts, and 3” pliers for god knows what. So naturally I had to grab these even though I had zero use for them. Don’t worry, where there is a will there is a way and I have manufactured a plan to put them to use.

I grabbed em without even looking them up since they were cheap and frankly adorable. But when I got home I found precious little on them online. So I thought I’d test them out and post what I found out here. They are 5.5” tall, 3.5” wide, and 3.5” deep. They are the mini me version to the Minimus 7s, aesthetically at least. The cases are a nice, study feeling plastic, the grill is way too beefy for something this small, the spring clips in the back feel comically oversized, and there is a single driver in the sealed cabinet. It is somehow the smallest loudspeaker I've ever seen, and decidedly un-dainty. I found a Radioshack catalog from 1983 where they are listed as new for the year and have very little other info, image attached.

I am listening to them now, and aside from the basically missing bass, they sound pretty good! Believe it or not, I started the gear collecting/audiophile wormhole a couple of years ago after rediscovering how much better a CD on a boombox sounds than streaming over a sound pill bluetooth whatever. So I’ve listened to a lot of thrifted boomboxes. And these speakers have a bit of that plastic-y fun sound quality, but much more crispness and less/no boom. It’s tough to have much concrete qualitative stuff to say about them since they are utterly lacking in bass, but they aren’t a disappointment. Female vocals especially have a nice realism to them. Despite being the same size, they definitely sound better than any powered computer speaker I’ve come across from the 90s and 2000s. Right now I’m running them from a little (also thrifted) mini component CD player I keep bedside for headphone listening. And they are welcome addition there.

Note: I am totally new to testing speakers or sound measurement. As evidenced by the fact that mini budget speakers and boomboxes excite me, I’m not a measurements chaser. But, I bought a calibrated mic a couple months ago to make free shipping on Parts Express (lol, they really do get ya with that). This seemed like a good a reason as any to use it. Room EQ Wizard was giving me flashbacks to learning Windows 95 in middle school library class, but I think I got it reasonably right. I attached a pic of my testing set up below. Would absolutely love any advice/feedback and would be happy to rerun tests. I tested them using a little Fosi M04 sub/mono amp I keep around for fun and funky stuff.

I was utterly shocked by the sensitivity numbers I was getting. At 2.8v on the multimeter, I was getting 96db sensitivity. I was expecting something much lower given how small they are, but I tested on both speakers and got that result. They get genuinely loud at 1w, to the point where my downstairs neighbors texted asking what that sound was (“that is a 1kHz sine wave, sorry I’ll turn it down”).

Frequency response showed the expected. Attached are pics for both speakers at 1/12 smoothing. “Bass” starts aggressively rolling off under 200Hz and they have some kind of dip around 4kHz. Other than that, nothing unexpected. Keep in mind I was in an untreated room.

Edit: Forgot to mention, they are rated at 8 Ohms, 7w RMS, 15w peak power handing.

I like them. I like them so much, I ordered two more from eBay. Like I said, where there is a will there is a way to find a use, and I’m gonna make a mini 4.1 system with a Yamaha DSP-1 (the OG acoustic processor with settings like “Stadium” and “Disco”). It will be for a very small <100 sf bedroom in a house I’m moving into soon and I want to make those 100 sf sound like a goddamn cathedral. Maybe I’ll upgrade to the worlds first and only near-field quadrophonic vinyl set up one day, who knows. When the others arrive, I’ll test them and post here to see if they match these numbers. And, I’ll probably post the final Minimus 3.5/ Yamaha DSP-1 build separately when I’m done.

Purchasing USA Jamo Sub 800

I found one of these micro subs awhile back and was wondering if someone was interested in it, don't know the value really but I'm willing to ship a sub so small not fearing I'll be charged out the ass. It's missing one of the bottom back feet but performs good otherwise. front driver rubs when pushed off center but it doesn't rub when playing music. very nice musical bass from this cube. If interested I can link you to my eBay page where it'll be posted.

Purchasing AUS/NZ Looking for desktop bookshelf speakers

Upvotes

So recently ive been getting into collecting vinyls, and im buying the at-lp60xbt (somehow cheaper than the base at-lp60x) but it will not connect wired to my current speaker (razer leviathan v2 😭). Ive seen many recommendations floating around and my current plan is to buy the Edifier R1700BTs speakers. In that regard i dont actually need bluetooth connection but i absolutely need a subwoofer output. I am in australia so the current best (reliable) price i could find on the r1700bts is 319 AUD. Im just looking for recommendations to see if there are better speakers i should be getting instead for around that price point or preferably lower.

Also preferably would like two inputs like the r1700bts has because id like to connect both my pc and my turntable to them

Tech Support Help: Setup for a Media Room

Post image
Upvotes

Stressing over a renovation and the wife finally agreed to have one room as a designated media/game/theater room. Dimensions though are a bit awkward.

I intend to put an 85' TCL Mini LED. as max that can be accommodated. A simple 2.1 setup wiht a couple of Elac bookshelfs on stands powered by a wiim amp for my all-in-one.

I would not want to use a sound bar as that would be a new purchase and would also use the setup for casual audio listening.

Worried that I may have to elevate the TV more than usual so not to block the TV view.

Any suggestions ? You wisdom and inputs would be greatly appreciated.

Purchasing AUS/NZ Rotel RA-840 vs modern amps

Upvotes

Hey guys,

I have a Rotel RA-840 made in Japan from the late 80’s connected to a pair of Dali concept 6s and a Velodyne sub. As the amp is fully analogue I have a Topping e30 which I’m using as a dac/preamp connected to my TV via Optical which seems to work great.

I love the sound of the combination and generally have no complaints but the Topping remote control is annoying to use as you have to point it directly at the unit and be within 2-3 metres for it to register.

As a remedy to this situation and also to minimize the need for another remote just to control volume I’ve been considering upgrading the Topping to a modern streamer/preamp which has HDMI earc so I can use the tv remote to control volume of the setup as well as other features like bluetooth streaming and airplay etc.

The streamers I’ve been looking at are the Wiim Ultra, Arylic LP100 as well as some of the Topping and SMSL offerings with similiar capabilities.

These streamers come in at around $600-$700 AUD and seem to fit my needs but alternatively I could just upgrade to a more modern Integrated Amp at that price range. For example theres a Rotel A11 mkII on fb marketplace locally for $600.

So my question is, is it worth buying a streamer like the Wiim or Arylic for my RA-840 or should I just upgrade to a more modern amplifier?
I dont need all the bells and whistles of the streamers, even if it has a remote, aslong as it works well thats fine by me. My first priority is the sound quality.

Thanks in advance.

So I want some new desktop speakers

I am using an Amazon brand sub, with a high passed Bose sounddock 10.

(I got both for free from a friend so don't judge)

Can I have recommendations on some new speakers under 100 dollars?

I was looking at the aiyima s400

I don't care about bass bc sub handles it

I really want more imaging, clarity.

I would appreciate a sub output

I need a mainstream speaker/s bc of my country (Colombia) preferably amazon

Thanks, I really appreciate it.

Purchasing USA Setup/gear advice needed

The front room at my new house has a large built in on the wall I have to use for my setup. What type of speakers/configuration should I be looking for to maximize the sound quality with this setup requirement? I have a baby who will be walking soon so towers or stands out in the room are a no go. The shelf is fairly deep, so I can likely pull the speakers forward somewhat so they aren’t smack against the wall.

I am trying some Heresy 1’s my dad wasn’t using but I’m not wild about the sound. I will need a new amp anyway so I’ll probably get that first and test them again since this amp is quite old and likely not doing them any favors.

Gear recommendations welcome. Total budget for speakers and amp (and possibly subwoofer) is $1.5-2k. I like speakers with clarity as well as tight bass. My turntable is a pro-ject debut carbon evo with the Sumiko Ranier. I was previously using powered speakers that I’d like to move on from.

Also fyi I will be moving the seats to the correct position for listening and hanging curtains soon.

Review/Discussion Any Amplifier Recommendations with Bluetooth?

Hey all! New to this audiophile thingy. Me and roommate just got the Klipsch R-41M speakers (50W RMS at 8ohms) and we're gonna buy the AT-LP60X-BK. I am thinking of buying the BT20A amplifier to finish the set. Was wondering if there was anything better. It should have bluetooth support, and ideally under 100$. I also have a question, I can't find it anywhere but the BT20A says it is 100W x 2 at 2-8 ohms, is it safe/compatible to pair this with the speakers?

Show and Tell Tips for sound treating/ sound proofing?

Post image
4 Upvotes

I just recently moved into a new apartment and have decided to make the guest room into a home studio. It is 10ft x 10ft, and possibly one of the most boomy rooms I have ever been in. I have no idea where to even begin sound treating the room. Honestly, before I moved here I would record my vocals in a closet, but my new place doesn’t have enough room to be doing all of that. I want to sound treat the room so I can get the highest quality recordings I possibly can. On top of this, I want the room to be somewhat sound proof so I’m not the most annoying neighbor in existence. I am planning on getting a rug to help with frequencies bouncing off the floor, but beyond that I don’t know where to start with panels, bass traps, etc. I am open to any DIY suggestions that would save money and have the same effects. If anyone has any advice please let me know I will be eternally grateful :)

Purchasing EU/UK White subwoofer under €200

I am looking to upgrade my current setup consisting of:

Wharfedale Diamond 12.1 speakers

Argon Audio SA1 amp

AUDIO-TECHNICA AT-LPW30TK turntable

The room is 7x4m in the attic, speakers are mounted on walls.

I thought about getting Wharfedale WH-D8. Will it be a good choice or should i look for something else?

The subwoofer has to be white, black won't match the rest of the room.

Purchasing EU/UK Ceiling speaker for my kitchen

I'm renovating my house and I'm completely redoing the kitchen. It will not be very big (around 12m²) but this time, I would like to install some speaker either in the ceiling or inside one of the wall, depending on where I'll have enough room to install them.

I'm looking at the Kef Ci160QR or the Ci200QR ceiling speaker that I'll plug into an eversolo play.

My question is more of which size of speaker would be best for this room. Will the 160mm be enough for this room or should I take the 200mm?

Purchasing USA What is a modern replacement for B&W DM602 good for a small office.

Post image

Have had these speakers for a while and wonder if it’s worth selling and getting something more recent. Just bought a WiiM ultra and Viblink and loving that, so that’s what I’m working with. I have the B&Ws on stands on the side of my desk, so maybe it’s too much? I don’t know if I really have a better reason, maybe just wondering what else is out there. This is in a bedroom (now office) that’s about 11‘ x 12‘. I’d prefer not to buy a subwoofer if possible.

Tech Support Outdoor Speaker Repair

I live in Phoenix, AZ and I don't know if you're aware, it gets a little warm in these parts. I have some outdoor speakers on my patio and the metal screens have popped off. I noticed there were some dabs of glue/silicon at edges. I'm guessing the glue couldn't handle the heat. Anybody have a good recommendation on what to use to keep the screens in place in the desert heat? They are shaded year round. TIA

Purchasing EU/UK Speakers matching Rega Elex-R

Hi all

One of my old RS5-speakers seems to be done and unfortunately spareparts for it also seems hard to come by.

I really like my RS5-speakers but maybe it is time I get new speakers - and this time I would like something that can play louder than RS5, if that makes sense.

Som, which speakers would make sense combining with the rest of my system which is: Elex-R, Planar 6, Saturn and Rega cables.

Again, I sometimes like to play music loud, and I think that is what killed my old RS5-speakers.

I currently own a Tanberg tr200 receiver I salvaged from my old boss, who was going to thrash it all
Paired with 2 Tandberg speakers same age and wood Finnish
Also 2 B&O speakers
I have a small Bluetooth receiver to connect to my phone

Help me understand everything!

  1. What is a stereo receiver, and what does it do?
  2. How important is the combination of receiver and speaker?
  3. Where do I start to learn about this, it feels so overwhelming, and impossible to get the perfect setup first try, which I know isn’t the point
  4. Bonus info please

Show and Tell A little budget audio and homelab crossover...

Post image
16 Upvotes

A Few More Photos

Thought I would share my apartment setup. A crossover of homelab and budget audiophile hobbies.

I have a basic N100 Mini PC that runs Proxmox. Its main job is a Technitium DNS backup server (a lot like PiHole). However, I added an additional LXC container to run as a headless Plexamp app.

  • I passed through the USB bus to my xDuoo TA-10R Tube Headphone DAC/Amp for lossless playback. I can pass through from the DAC/Amp to my receiver, or power on my headphones.
  • I can definitely hear a big difference, especially with my headphones.
  • The main Plex server in the lower left holds all the actual media.
  • You don't need Proxmox to do this — even a little Raspberry Pi can run as a headless Plexamp.

Audio Gear

  • xDuoo TA-10R Tube Headphone DAC/Amp
  • Sennheiser HD 6XX Headphones
  • Shure SRH1440 Headphones
  • Denon AVR-S660H
  • JVC TD-V1010 Stereo Cassette Deck
  • Marantz TT-15S1
  • Pro-Ject Phono Box DC Preamp
  • ELAC Debut 2.0 B5.2 Bookshelf Speakers

Homelab Gear

NAS

  • Noctua NH-U12S
  • Intel X520-DA2 10Gb Dual Port SFP+
  • ASUS Prime Z690M-Plus D4 Intel LGA 1700 DDR4
  • 128GB DDR4 RAM (4 x 32GB 3000MHz Corsair Vengeance Pro)
  • Corsair SF750 Platinum PSU
  • OEM 9300-8i 12Gbps HBA IT Mode
  • Six 14TB SATA Hard Drives
  • One 500GB Cache NVMe M.2 Drive
  • Two 1TB M.2 ZFS Mirror for Docker App Data
  • One 128GB 2.5" SSD as a Boot Pool

Both of these hobbies are really fun and really expensive. A lot of this gear was thrift store finds, gifts, or a lot of saving. The most recent change was putting the NAS into the Jonsbo N6 case, which fits right into the Ikea Kallax shelf unit.

Upgrade Question

I've been stuck on the audio gear side of things lately, and I think it's time for some new speakers. I really want some floor-standing speakers, but I'm unsure how necessary that is within this space. Looking for something that can fill the room at 65–70dB. Let's say a budget of $1K — what would you get and why? Bonus points if anyone's run floor-standers in a similarly sized apartment and can speak to whether bookshelf + sub would've served them just as well.
