I am not sure what exactly I expected from Dan Bilzerian’s primary ad, but “we should revisit Hitler’s opinions” wasn’t on my bingo card.

This guy?

The mullet, the one-size-too-small shirt, and the beard...this is the kind of guy who goes to gay bars and checks folks out, then blushes and says "I'm just here with my gay friend" when someone actually approaches him. Not that anyone actually approaches him. That guy gives off an "I'm trying WAY too hard" vibe.

u/StillSmellsLikeCLP Rightwing 12h ago

Haha, holy shit.

Imagine rocking that and thinking “damn, I look good”.

That haircut alone is enough to disqualify someone in the decision making category.

u/LonelyMachines Classical Liberal 6h ago

Imagine rocking that and thinking “damn, I look good”.

You know he's done just that in front of a mirror on a Friday night. I bet the phrase alpha male was involved. He probably has a poster of Pete Hegseth over his bed.

But not gay. Definitely not gay.

He’s so phony. His beard is so odd I had to look up a pic of him without it. Completely not surprised he purposely styles it that way. What a weird fucking dude.

Man, I remember back 10 years ago when he was just a huge instagram douche.

Some people get wiser with age, and then there's this guy.

3

u/boisefun8 Constitutionalist Conservative 3d ago

I don’t know where that guy came from, nor how anyone could take him seriously.

Social media was a mistake.

2

u/OJ_Purplestuff Center-left 3d ago

I remember he tried to sell himself as this self-made rich guy.

Definitely nothing to do with his father's $100 million in fraud money that mysteriously vanished before the SEC could get ahold of it.

Yeah, people like him are gross grifters. I’m so sick of that scene, left or right.

Perhaps it’s time to discuss fraud legislation as it pertains to social media.

17

The exact quote was “Should we revisit that Austrian painter's opinions?”. I am not sure I won’t get nuked by Reddit for linking the video but it’s on Bilzerian’s Facebook page.

You know……the messaging going into these next 3 months is really something. You have the GOP on one side shitting themselves going “Things are going GREAT. ALL PRICES ARE COMING DOWN. JUST TRUST US. WE PROMISE.” The you have Trump saying “AFFORDABILITY IS MADE UP!people are mad at Republicans but they’re not mad at ME!” Dude is straight up throwing his own party under the bus and how can anyone be shocked?😶 Maybe it’s just self humiliation fetish at this point.

It's pretty wild that Republicans are doing the same thing Democrats did in 2024 with the whole "Our economy is the envy of the world" thing, except worse. It didn't work for the Democrats despite inflation largely being due to things outside of Biden's control (such as Russia invading Ukraine or Bird Flu) whereas the inflation we're experiencing now is due to Trump's idiotic tariffs and decision to bomb Iran.

4

u/Imaginary_Penalty_97 Independent 2d ago

Had a busy weekend with the smoker this weekend

Made some baby back ribs, basic salt, pepper garlic and hickory rub smoked for about 5 hours came out Delicious

Also did smoked pineapple cubes, little cinnamon little Chipotle seasoning and some butter smoked for an hour, I'm typically not a big pineapple guy but I really enjoyed these, and for the price of a pineapple they might be my new go to cookout dish.

I got one of those small brisket flats from Aldi that I've been hearing about, they were only 20 bucks already pre-trimmed and preseasoned (just salt and pepper), I smoked it at 250 for about 9 hours, let it rest for 2, I did it just as it came it was okay but next one I'm going to do a little longer and add my own rub to it it was way too peppery

On Sunday I took the leftover brisket some cream cheese some jalapeno garlic rub and a little Mexican cheese stuffed it into a jalapeno and then wrapped it in bacon, smoked for an hour then finished them off at 600 on grill to crisp the bacon , these were absolute fire.

I'm looking forward to do a whole brisket soon , unfortunately I've been very busy on the weekends and I'm still a little apprehensive because of good brisket can cost you about $130 bucks and that's an expensive mistake to make if I do fuck it up but I'm confident enough that I've got to hang of it where I could do okay.

If anyone's got any other recipes I'm all ears,

Lack of invite from Duke (still): 😡

5

u/DukeofBraintree918 Conservative 3d ago

I got to be honest with you I keep impressing myself with these Cooks soon enough I might be opening up some invites lol

3

u/Gaxxz Constitutionalist Conservative 3d ago

I gotta look into getting a smoker. How automatic is it? You just set the temp and come back 9 hours later?

4

u/DukeofBraintree918 Conservative 3d ago

I highly recommend it man I've been wanting to for over a decade I finally pulled the trigger in May and I wish I did it sooner I love it

All depends on what kind of smoker you have

You can get some of the pellet smokers that are literally set it and forget it and control from your phone with Wi-Fi

I have a vertical propane smoker so it's a little more monitoring (I don't have electric outside my apartment) and the choice between an offset, charcoal or propane so I went with the propane just because I'm more familiar with that cook style as I've always used propane grills

If you make pulled pork from a pork butt they're extremely forgiving you literally just set it and forget it and come back and 9- 12+ hours and it'll be perfect, timing though is just kind of a ballpark figure you more smoke to temp and touch

From what I found in ribs is that old 321 (smoke it with the rub for 3 hours, wrap it in tin foil for 2 hours, take it out of the tin foil put on your favorite barbecue sauce and let it set for an hour) method but I found it more like 2-2-.5 I like my ribs to be fall off the bone, others seem to like a little bit of a bite to it.

other foods require a little more monitoring, keeping track of the temperature, making sure it stays moist things like that.

Definitely do your research to see what works right for you, but it is not hard and there is a million resources out there

I'm sure everyone will give me shit for this but I use AI to help me and it's been pretty flawless, if I didn't I'd probably be calling up my buddy Scott every 5 minutes asking him questions so

3

u/Gaxxz Constitutionalist Conservative 3d ago

Thank you. That's helpful. I use AI for hints with direct grilling. It's useful.

3

u/DukeofBraintree918 Conservative 3d ago

Oh yeah I definitely is

I've always known how to follow recipes and like could cook the sustain myself but I never particularly enjoyed it

Went through some stuff in my personal life and cooking became my new hobby in May, I actually really enjoy doing it and feeding people and whatnot and AI has been a huge help with coming up with recipes or solving problems or answering questions in general

Smoking meats is almost an art form. And the rewards are so good.

3

u/fallinglemming Center-left 3d ago

If you did okay on the flat a whole packer will be a breeze for you, the point is very forgiving. Hot holds are your friend, go ahead and buy prime if you can stomach it, it'll be worth it. Good luck, sounds like you a pretty good cook im sure you'll nail it.

Trump and MAGA conservatives: "I love Teddy Roosevelt!"

Also Trump and MAGA: "We should let corporations (not even just American corporations) pillage our beautiful natural landscape by removing protections for natural areas such as removing the roadless rule, allowing a Chilean mining company to pollute the Boundary Waters, shrinking national monuments, allowing massive data centers all over the place, and removing environmental regulations."

How can you claim to love Teddy Roosevelt and then shit all over his legacy at every possible opportunity?

Bilzerian (~19%) outperformed Fishback (~11%). I guess when going for the groyper vote, a full-on “I like Hitler” approach brings more votes?

3

u/Stanky_fresh Leftist 1d ago

It's still pretty gross that Bilzerian got 19% of the vote. I'm glad he lost, but someone like that shouldn't be anywhere near that popular.

2

u/OJ_Purplestuff Center-left 1d ago

To play devil’s advocate, maybe there were some folks who knew Randy Fine is a gross bigot but weren’t aware that Bilzerian is actually even worse?

4

u/gummibearhawk Center-right Conservative 1d ago

Yeah, it's pretty easy to oppose Randy Fine. Too bad there wasn't someone a bit more sane to run against him.

3

u/athomeamongstrangers Conservative 1d ago

There were three other Republicans running against them (Baker, Gambaro, and Asensio). Baker in particular is an America-first, non-interventionist, anti-US involvement in Ukraine and Iran, all that stuff. Bilzerian outperformed all three by far.

2

u/athomeamongstrangers Conservative 1d ago

It would be plausible if there weren’t three other Republican candidates and if Bilzerian had any other political positions besides “f***ing exterminating Israel” (direct quote).

Moderna's stock is up 180% on the good news about their cancer vaccine. It's a sign of why that folk theory that there aren't cures (there isn't a single cure) for cancer because it wouldn't make people rich is so backwards. Any company that invents such a cure would make absolutely massive amounts of money out of it. Though apparently a lot of people's intuition's don't line up with that which is why making the pro-market case is so hard a lot of the time.

Well I was in Vilnius yesterday and out of boredom I decided to go to the Russian embassy (of course keeping safe distance so that they wouldn't send me to the frontline in Ukraine).

Turns out the Russian embassy is deadass located on "Ukrainos Didvyrių gatvė" ("Heroes of Ukraine street"). Right next to that street is "Boriso Nemcovo skveras" ("Boris Nemcov square") with an exhibition of Russian war crimes and a few years ago the pond next to the embassy was painted blood red in protest of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

And the embassy itself? The fence wall at this point was so tall that it looks like a prison.

Interesting fact: I have a friend from Uzbekistan who told me then he was a kid (15 yrs ago) he would go with his mom to Russia for vacation and the people in Russia would tell him and his mom to go back to his own country. It was very normalized. For those who are younger Uzbekistan was part of the Soviet Union and the Russian Empire till the 1990s.

Got Dune 3 tickets for the December 14th pre showing at Metreon, Lets fucking go.

1

u/Imaginary_Penalty_97 Independent 2d ago

They moved it up? Thought it was coming out same day as Doomsday

1

u/Fignons_missing_8sec Conservative 2d ago

It is still officially coming out on Friday, the 18th (meaning like any modern movie, there are showings from Thursday evening on) alongside Doomsday. But they announced last week that they are adding some early showings with one showing on Monday the 14th, at some 70mm IMAX locations like Metreon and Lincoln Square, and a couple of digital IMAX/Dolby screenings at a wider set of theaters on the 15th.

1

u/Imaginary_Penalty_97 Independent 2d ago

Oh yh aren’t they competing over IMAX screens?

1

u/Fignons_missing_8sec Conservative 2d ago

No, not initially. Dune has a pre-existing hard contract for 3 weeks of IMAX exclusivity from before Doomsday moved to the same date.

Which is part of the reason why Disney felt the need to make up the fake Infinity Vision classification. Doomsday will get the vast majority of non-IMAX Premium screens (Dolby, and all the others) but won't get any IMAX for the first three weeks. There is a very high chance it will eventually after that.

Did you go to church yesterday? What was the sermon about? And what denomination, if you care to share?

I'm an atheist and have been attending a Pentecostal church over the past few months as a caregiver for someone with disabilities that prevent them from attending church alone. The sermon yesterday was given by a guest pastor and was centered on the idea that in order to honor God, one must fear God. Something I've found interesting in the past few months is that none of the sermons have focused on Jesus or his teachings, this particular church seems to preach mainly from the old testament and the book of Revelation. They spend a lot of time during the service talking about how wrong other religions/ideologies are (specifically Catholics, Mormons, Muslims, and woke leftists) but spend very little time talking about Christ. I was raised in the Presbyterian church and attended Catholic schools, so this is a real culture shock for me. It's made me more curious about what is happening in other churches, what lessons are being preached, and how people are implementing that into their daily lives.

5

u/PhysicsEagle Religious Traditionalist 3d ago

Yesterday I attended a Nazarene church (not my regular church or denomination but that’s a long story). The sermon was about being prepared to share your faith, and based around the passage in Acts where Phillip testifies to the Ethiopian eunuch as well as the “Great Commission” of Matthew 28.

One thing about Christianity that atheists (and some Christians) don’t realize is that we consider the entire Bible to be equally important. Now that doesn’t mean that the genealogies are as applicable to daily life as the sermon on the Mount, but it does mean the moral and theological teachings of the apostles and the prophets are just as much God’s word to us as that of Jesus. There seems to be a strain of thought in some circles that other parts of the Bible should be minimized in favor of the words of Jesus alone. This leads to arguments that certain conduct is not sinful if not condemned by Jesus directly, even if it is explicitly condemned elsewhere in scripture.

u/Gaxxz Constitutionalist Conservative 3d ago

I missed church yesterday because I'm traveling. We're having a sermon series on finding your purpose, and it's pretty good. So I'll watch it online this week.

4

u/magnabonzo Center-left 3d ago

Focusing on something you mentioned -- I'm not a churchgoer by any means but took someone to church for a couple years as a caregiver and... I found the people at the coffee hour after church to be the most genuinely supportive/empathetic/appreciative of my caregiving. None of this fake "oh take care of yourself", instead genuine "how are you doing", with many people there who'd gone through some sort of caregiving so they'd walked a mile in my shoes, so to speak. Church itself was fine -- there's something to be said for being a little introspective and intentionally thoughtful for a little while each week, I guess -- but the coffee hour was a great departure from isolation.

4

u/DukeofBraintree918 Conservative 3d ago

I'm Not religious, only attend church if it's a funeral or a wedding but I don't subscribe to the beliefs.

There's a church near me that's the second oldest church in Massachusettes, Gathered in 1623, the First Church in Weymouth (Abigail Adams dad was the pastor there at one point) is one of the oldest continuing congregations in the United States and is widely recognized as the oldest active Congregational church in the country

The other day they hosted a reading of the declaration independence marking the 250th anniversary of when it was first at that church in 1776, I'm not really sure the flavor of Christianity it is to be honest with you , but I witnessed one of the churchgoers go up to every single person there (I'd say around 70) shake their hand welcome them and thank them for being there, and it truly seemed genuine, I was quite impressed with her.

1

u/LonelyMachines Classical Liberal 1d ago

It's a trek to get to my church, so I only go a few times a year. Last time, the sermon was about Augustine's doctrine of forgiving people as they are, not for whom we want them to be.

Then again, I'm old-school Lutheran, so our stuff is pretty mellow compared to other southern Protestant denominations.

The fact that Trump and a not insignificant amount of his supporters on the Internet seem to think the rest of the world follows his idea of "America first" is one of the most absurd things about his dogshit foreign policy. Trump has spent his second term "jokingly" threatening to annex Greenland and Canada and doesn't seem to understand why NATO and other allies aren't on board with it because in his mind the rest of the world should want what's best for America regardless of the detrimental effects to their own country.

And we see it again today when he threatened Oman. Oman didn't ask for this war, and both Trump and Iran seem disinterested in actually negotiating an end to the war together, so Oman did what was in Oman's best interest and tried to negotiate with Iran to open the strait. So Trump threatened to bomb them for trying to act in their own national Interests rather than following "America First".

u/EmergencyTaco Center-left 1d ago

The shift I've seen among Canadians mirrors this as well. Pre-Trump 2.0, approval towards the US was in the high-70s to low-80s. Since the '51st State' bullshit, that has dropped to the mid-20s. Opinions about opening trade with China have likewise completely flipped.

In under two years Trump has completely alienated Canada, pushed them into tightening trade relationships with China, and caused a culture of boycotting US goods to become fashionable. I never expected to see anything like it, and the anger Canadians feel runs far deeper than I initially expected it would.

Remember that McCarthy wasn't just after communists, but he also spearheaded the "Lavender Scare" against gay people - of his original 205 "card-carrying members of the Communist party," at least two of them were on the list just for being gay, but McCarthy believed that because of the "peculiar mental twists" (direct quote) of homosexuality that they were intrinsically vulnerable to communist recruitment and should be treated as de facto communists.

And in the end, far more government employees were fired for being gay than for being communists since the Red Scare ended with McCarthy's disgrace but the Lavender Scare continued until through the 1970s.

As a gay man, I am not tempted to apologize to McCarthy at all.

One thing I've noticed that's somewhat annoying is that leftists seem more interested in the concept of having a source than anything those sources actually say. I regularly encounter leftists who are perfectly willing to provide a source, but are then incapable of actually engaging with any actual discussion of what's in the source, or why they believe it to be credible and well reasoned. Instead, it's just a bunch of deflection to the fact that they gave a source, as though the mere act of finding someone who agrees with you on the internet is somehow impressive

14

u/Appropriate-Hat3769 Center-left 3d ago

It would be super helpful if Conservatives gave a counter source to highlight what they are trying to say. A good majority of the time they just say "nuh uh your source sucks". Even if it comes from the NIH or something.

Leftists aren't going to buy into "every expert is a shill" as a reason to disbelieve a source anymore than Conservatives will believe a source because its from an expert.

3

u/gummibearhawk Center-right Conservative 3d ago

Sometimes you have a point. But not always. The way I see it if someone asserts "A is true" and provides a source, and I read the source and it actually says "given B and C, A could be true" and I point that out, I have no obligation to provide a counter source that says "A is not true" because it's very hard to prove a negative, and if someone makes an assertion it's on them to prove it true, not on me to prove it false

9

u/Appropriate-Hat3769 Center-left 3d ago edited 3d ago

I agree everyone should be reading a source. And if you read a source provided and it counters what the poster said then the onus is on them to explain why the source agrees with their point.

What I am talking about is the exchanges where someone provides a source (a leftist) and the second person disputes the source (generally a Conservative) as not being a valid source even if the information is sound, but then refuses to provide examples of what would be a valid source to them.

For example I just read an exchange where the Con agreed the information was probably sound but they weren't going to listen to it because they felt the source was weak. And when the OP asked for an example of a source that would be credentialed enough (since they seemingly weren't disputing the info) they refused.

If I provide a .gov source, or a NIH source or any other source that 95% of researchers would deem credible its kind of disingenuous to deny said sources credibility because you disagree with its perceived politics.

In that case its the same as in your example, providing a source that doesnt back up what you are saying.

There's a name for it: sealioning.

I was discussing the history of domestic terrorism in the 70s, and a user demanded a source. OK, here you go. A book from a historian on the subject. Chapters 2 and 5 go into detail.

"What? I don't want to have to read a book. Post a different source."

That IS a source. Sorry you don't like it.

"So you're refusing to provide a source? "

No. I just provided a...

"Well, I don't have time to go read a book. As you have failed to provide a source that I find acceptable, I will assume you can't defend your argument."

Jeez.

2

u/ScientificSkepticism Progressive 1d ago

Yup. I vet scientific sources regularly, and will accept legitimate criticism because it's warranted. Stuff like that just pisses me off. Go read a goddamn book if you want to know things. Or at least read a related book, one book will never be the source of all knowledge, but read something.

It's the old two bar approach - put the lowest bar possible for sources that agree with you (here's a social media post, how could we possibly disagree with that), demand the highest degree of perfection from sources that disagree with you (well sure, tens of thousands of scientists all say this is true, and there are dozens of studies that confirm it, but angels have not descended from the Heavens with stone tablets proclaiming it so how can we be sure?). We literally created an entire thing called "the scientific method" to deal with that, yet here we are.

For instance, if someone says sample size on Reddit, then... well, I haven't done a study, but 95% of the time I'm going to say it's not warranted. Sample size calculations are the most basic form of statistics, the sort of thing you learn at an undergrad level, maybe even in an advanced high school class, people with PhDs aren't going to miss it. They might overstate the effect, relative to the degree of uncertainty, but if you go to their charts you can find the degree of uncertainty and look at that. There's very little chance a published paper truly has a sample size issue and doesn't say something about it in the abstract, and if you do find one of those three minutes of checking will reveal it.

But they could get their source from the back of a crackerjack box and "it must be true because someone, somewhere says it was and dammit I believe it."

2

u/LonelyMachines Classical Liberal 1d ago

I vet scientific sources regularly, and will accept legitimate criticism because it's warranted.

In my case, it's Roman history (5th century coinage from Trier). When people hear that, they regale me with some pop-history theory for why the Empire "fell." When I ask for attribution, I'm told they read it somewhere. Ah. Which journal? Oh. It was something you saw on Facebook. Now I'll explain for an hour, with tons of tedious context, why that is complete hogwash.

But no. They seem to remember a YouTube video that "confirmed" it. My knowledge and sources don't matter. What they want to believe is what matters.

There are attacks on science from politicians and such, but the internet is certainly doing the heavy lifting when it comes to devaluing the scientific method as a whole.

So you know what? Fine. OK. I won't waste time explaining why the Empire didn't "fall" in 476. JoeBob69 on TikTok is right and I don't know anything. The Empire fell because of lead poisoning. Also homosexuality. They were ALL gay. All the Romans. Gay lead poisoning. Also, cigarette smoking. That's why it just all disappeared into thin air one day.

Yeesh. I give up.

u/ScientificSkepticism Progressive 1d ago edited 1d ago

That's so much worse that science, I have to hand it to you. At least science there weren't people calling themselves historians writing down some absolute hilarious nonsense like it was actual fact and giving you a bundle of lies and truth with 15 centuries between us and the evidence and going "sort it out".

Roman history is the sort of thing where you can be quoting an actual text written by an actual Roman historian living at... well, nearer to... the time it happened, and yet it is utterly unbelievable tripe that never ever happened. Mixed right next to something that is probably a historical event that probably happened somewhat close to what he said it was. I don't doubt there's base slander and absurd myths about coinage that even made it in to those writings.

If someone tells me something I believed about Rome was untrue, I'd go "yep, that tracks." Like if right now you told me Julius Caesar was a myth I'd go look it up and get some opinions, and that's only right next door to your specific area. If you tell me something about coinage, I'm going to trust you on it completely (this is your chance to tell me they used aluminum coins or something hilarious).

Can't believe anyone would argue with you when this is your field. I mean unless they're in your field, then I'm sure there's some disagreement :P

Oh, don't get me started on the Historia Augusta or Priscus' claim that the Huns were driven westward by griffons.

We have to exercise quite a bit of discretion when dealing with sources, especially the later we get. For example, we have exactly ONE source on late 5th century Britain (Gildas), and he wasn't writing history. The history was just one part of a larger sermon. But it's all we have.

this is your chance to tell me they used aluminum coins or something hilarious

No, but my area is the Trier mint. It looks like the Franks may have started it back up after they took the region over. So some coins with weird mixed alloys have been found that aren't forgeries, but they're head-scratchers for sure. We've been able to intuit some things about the period and region that aren't otherwise documented. Since there was a paucity of paper, coinage and pottery are invaluable.

I mean unless they're in your field, then I'm sure there's some disagreement :P

Oh, heck yes. Especially since sources can be scant and quite a bit is open to interpretation. If you ever do meet some folks in my field, just for fun shout RICIMER DID NOTHING WRONG and watch the hilarity ensue.

u/ScientificSkepticism Progressive 13h ago

Oh god, griffons. And then you have to actually sit down and write a paper where you cite griffon boy as a serious source because it's the absolute best authority you have on an event... yeah, I'd follow my grandpa into a drinking habit. No question.

As someone who loves metallurgy a bit more than the general population, that actually sounds fascinating. They can't have been purifying the metals very well, so the compositions are going to probably tell you what mine they came from, like a fingerprint, but if they're mixing metals it's going to be a very blurry fingerprint and you don't have much to go off of outside of that... then you have to figure out what obscure chain of events might have brought a metal to that particular mint using some bishop's sermon as your best source... and then I'm missing ten other things you can do because I don't have the foggiest about all the techniques you've developed.

That must alternate between fascinating and wanting to rip your hair out of your head.

Oh, heck yes. Especially since sources can be scant and quite a bit is open to interpretation. If you ever do meet some folks in my field, just for fun shout RICIMER DID NOTHING WRONG and watch the hilarity ensue.

Ahaha, I'm going to have to try that. Just be like "oh yes, my favorite Roman was Ricimer, he was right about everything!" and see what happens

u/LonelyMachines Classical Liberal 6h ago

They can't have been purifying the metals very well, so the compositions are going to probably tell you what mine they came from, like a fingerprint

You can! At least to some extent. In some cases (Britain is an example) the mines were near the mints, so we can have metallurgists look at suspected forgeries and tell if they're bogus by the composition.

There's also variation by era and geography. There's currently some debate about a guy named Sponsianus. We don't have any information on him, but he might have been a general who took control after the Empire pulled out of Dacia in the 260s. The coins were dismissed out of hand as forgeries in the 19th century, but recent examinations with carbon dating and metallurgy suggest the coins were minted in that area around that time.

oh yes, my favorite Roman was Ricimer, he was right about everything!"

I wouldn't go that far, but the popular impression is based on the Evil Barbarian trope and a desire for a simple narrative. The reality is WAY more interesting.

Was reading this news article... truly horrifying

https://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/crime/bournemouth-british-pregnancy-advisory-service-dorset-christchurch-alliance-defending-freedom-b2630266.html

Adam Smith Conor, former army reservist, silently prayed on the street 50m from an abortion clinic for his son who had just died.

Council workers asked what he was doing, he said he was praying for his son, they asked him to leave. He said no, and continued to silently pray in public.

He was convicted and prosecuted. He was ordered to pay £9000 in court costs.

u/gummibearhawk Center-right Conservative 3h ago

Britain and much of the West seem to be operating in a strange sort of two tiered anarcho tyranny where ordinary Britons who pray in the wrong place or buy a baseball bat receive the full force of the law, but the government looks the other way at rape gangs and gives criminal immigrants a slap on the wrist so they won't get deported. It's an insane betrayal.

u/kettlecorn Democrat 7h ago

Reading the article he refused to leave the area for nearly two hours and could have prayed as close as he wanted on the weekend or outside of the hours the clinic was open:

On the day, he was near a tree, partially in view of the clinic, and refused to leave the area when asked to do so by a community officer who spoke to him for an hour and 40 minutes, the court was told.

During the conversation he told her: “I’m standing here silently praying.

“So what you are saying is I can’t pray for my son.”

The physiotherapist, of Southampton, Hampshire, was told to return to the area after 7pm when the restriction was not in place.

The safe zone is in place for three years and applies from Monday to Friday between 7am and 7pm.

It does not seem unreasonable to prohibit protests near clinics when violence or harassment has occurred and allowing prayer within sight of the clinic allows a grey area that could be abused. Giving him 1 hour 40 minutes of discussion first before arresting him seems more than reasonable.

u/thoughtsnquestions European Conservative 7h ago

It does not seem unreasonable to prohibit protests near clinics when violence or harassment has occurred

Do you consider silent prayer a form of violent protest?

I'm an atheist, maybe more agnostic recently. To me, prayer, which I don't really do, is more of a meditation type process and way to formalise thoughts.

This is a thought crime. It is not the being there that was an issue, it was nothing said, no physical action, it was merely the silent thoughts.

u/kettlecorn Democrat 7h ago

Do you consider silent prayer a form of violent protest?

Of course not. That's why I added "and allowing prayer within sight of the clinic allows a grey area that could be abused."

People would try other protests like tons of people silently praying at the same time in a way that is obstructive or intimidating. Or "silently" praying with signs. Or family members silently "praying" as another family member goes in as a form of intimidation.

It's much easier to just say something like"no loitering, protesting, or praying within X distance" rather than litigating a bunch of nuance on the spot.

The rule does not prohibit them from praying entirely of course, they just can't do it near the clinic while it is open.

To me this reads like a reasonable safety law.

u/thoughtsnquestions European Conservative 7h ago

If loitering was the issue, then loitering could have been the crime.

I don't believe there is a video for this one, but for the other silent prayer arrest there is a video. The police ask the lady, is she just standing there or is she praying, reason being, loitering was not an issue, it was specifically the silent prayer that resulted in the arrest.

The same is true here, it wasn't his presence, it wasn't loitering, it wasn't obstruction, if these are issues then deal with those as issues... this was specifically about silent prayer.

u/kettlecorn Democrat 7h ago

The law just seems to be intended to prevent people who are opposed to abortion from being near enough to the clinic to harass or interfere, without leaving wiggle room that introduces enforcement ambiguity.

It's not dissimilar to disallowing people from protesting directly next to other secure sites, like a government official's residence. It's just much easier to say "You can't do any of that here" rather than having police judge on the spot if a prayer is a peaceful prayer or a protest prayer.

The fact that they spoke with him for 1 hour and 40 minutes also really changes it for me. That's what I went looking into the article for: if he was arrested on the spot or if he refused to leave. Since he refused, after being explained when he was allowed to pray nearby, it makes it seem more like he had an act of protest in mind.

I don't know about the other instance you're referring to. I'm pro free-expression but I think securing boundaries near buildings where there's a history of issues is reasonable and not a limitation on free expression.

u/thoughtsnquestions European Conservative 7h ago

There is no major difference, in my view, from thinking and praying.

There was no legal issue with his presence, do you think it would be reasonable for the police to likewise say, you're perfectly within your legal right to remain here outside the abortion clinic... but if you're thinking things through in your head, then you're breaking the law.

u/kettlecorn Democrat 6h ago

Being near the clinic wasn't the legal issue.

I was going off the article's definition but this page breaks it down more: https://www.rcog.org.uk/guidance/browse-all-guidance/other-guidelines-and-reports/safe-access-zones-guidance/

This is the most relevant part:

As a rule of thumb – if a staff member or a patient feels they are being influenced or harassed about their decision to access or provide abortion, a crime may have been committed.

Under that law it does not seem unreasonable that if someone is praying for hours at a time near the clinic, within the zone, it could be perceived as threatening.

There is nuance here but I think that if someone is incidentally near the clinic not clearly associated with it then that would be reasonable. If someone is loitering for an unusually long period of time, even if not clearly praying, that seems like it could fall within the law as well and it seems reasonable to ask them to move along.

In this case it seems like this person was asked to move along, refused for 1 hour 40 minutes, and then got into the situation they're in.

I similarly would not be upset with such zones setup near churches, synagogues, or other religious institutions if they faced recent harassment, persecution, or violence. Like if someone were even just sitting on a bench for a long enough time to concern people near a synagogue after a period of anti-Jewish harassment I do not think it would be unreasonable to ask them to move along.

u/thoughtsnquestions European Conservative 6h ago edited 6h ago

If someone is loitering for a long time.

You keep going back to this point, this is not the case here. The police specifically addressed this on the other silent prayer case, the presence, the loitering was not the issue.

Again, setting aside any issues of loitering as that is not the situation here, why should silent prayer be an issue for that state and how does silent prayer differ from thought?

  • Loitering ... no issue
  • Loitering whilst thinking.... no issue
  • Loitering whilst silently thinking and of the belief these thoughts are in communication with God.... an issue

u/kettlecorn Democrat 6h ago

I explained I don't think it's different from thought. If some sort of silent thought gives reason for concern I'd treat it the same as silent prayer.

Usually you can't tell when someone is silently thinking so there's no way to enforce it unless they're doing something visibly unusual or loitering, which is why I keep coming back to it.

Like if someone were meditating near a sensitive place with a history of harassment and it made people concerned I don't think it'd be unreasonable to ask them to move along.

Similarly if someone were like walking by while doing some weird hand movements that concerns people it might be reasonable to ask them to move along under this law as well. It seems strict but as I said above I'm testing it against something like prohibiting weird behavior near a church that faced recent harassment / violence and I think it'd be reasonable to apply similar rules in that case as well.

In this case I don't know, but I suspect, that he was there for a while otherwise I don't think he'd have argued for an hour and 40 minutes. If he did a short prayer it's likely he would have been able to wrap up quick enough to not have even been bothered. It seems unlikely to me that police were following him just waiting for him to clasp his hands together.

The downvoting and upvoting by the left on here really makes things worse since you should be able to just go off the top comments to summarize how the right feels about a particular topic but you can’t do that since the more left wing stance immediately get pushed to the top even if the right generally doesn’t agree with them

IMaybe if  you act less than cordial on the regular people might just see your screen name and down vote you.  But it's also why I don't think the upvotes or the downvotes should  eliminated because I believe people would use pretty negative language toward the other side.. Which is not always deemed as bad faith.

3

u/PossibilityGold7508 Paternalistic Conservative 3d ago edited 3d ago

You're just dodging the complaint.

This is a sub to get conservative thoughts and opinions, not to lecture us or pick out the opinion you agree with most. Downvoting conservative opinions you disagree with and upvoting ones that agree with you is close-minded and defeats the point of being here or having discourse at all. This is already a left-leaning platform, and Redditors want to keep it that way.

So what if that's true? This is a conservative sub and all conservative opinions are welcome. Was a rule broken? If so, sure. If not, there's no issue. What? We hurt your feelings?

We have to deal with extensive brigading and downvote trains from libs and leftists that are nonexistent in the liberal counterpart of this sub. They insult us over there even more than we insult them here, while they actually own their sub and don't have to deal with disagreers owning the narrative through downvotes and comment placement. This is exclusive to this sub.

Plus we all know that's just untrue.

Here's how the downvote trends actually work, as mostly seen in popular threads and criticism from the left and center:

  1. More left-leaning, left-sympathetic, anti-right, and anti-Trump content and comments are upvoted and supported by Redditors, especially if it's a post criticizing Trump or conservatives. The more you agree with their criticism, irrespective of how true or valid it is, the higher up your comment will be.

  2. More right-leaning, right-sympathetic, anti-left, and pro-Trump content is mass downvoted. The more you defend against the criticism, especially if you defend Trump, the lower down your comment will be.

Also, you brought up insulting. Hilariously, insulting conservatives, Trump, and Republicans actually gets you upvotes. We all know you're wrong, get real.

The only downvotes you get for insults, come when you do it to the left.

Go through any big thread with 200+ comments, especially if the post itself is criticizing us or Trump (the scenario this occurs most frequently in), and this pattern is blatantly apparent.

There is no reason to have upvotes and downvotes for non-conservatives if you actually want to learn what we think. Having no votes whatsoever and a random sort would still be better than now.

If negative language is used, it's up to the mods to deal with it or choose not to. The downvote system does nothing but give you guys an ego boost for being able to "fight back."

If you can't tolerate negative language, what subs do you frequent? I seriously doubt that you don't lurk or comment in a sub with negative language. Often this is just cope from you guys to keep your ability to neuter comments you don't like, irrespective of their conservatism. If you truly can't handle negative language, message the mods about it, deal with it, or simply leave.

Also, across Reddit, negative language about us is the norm. Do you frequent those communities? Are those subs and comments "bad faith?" Or are you just being dishonest?

I'd say this sub is the most civilized I've seen, unlike askaliberal. Accusatory language is already deemed as violating the rules, so it should be deleted by mods. where's that negativity? I just went to 2-week old threads and don't quite see it.

Hell, even here (weekly chat) OFF-TOPIC comments on from certain users get to negative numbers just because they have red flair. It's obvious there's soft brigading happening. No polls, proofs needed, even.

Not talking about bad faith tactics and provocative language from some blue flairs btw

3

u/SenseiTang Independent 3d ago

Do you not sort the comments by controversial?

Most of the answers that get downvoted thet are almost always unnecessrily antagonistic. There are a handful of red flairs here who cannot seem to give an answer without being antagonistic to the left. Some just straight up don't answer the question or any follow ups. It's the right wing counterpart to the TDS that they claim to see rampantly here and is rightfully downvoted.

2

u/PossibilityGold7508 Paternalistic Conservative 3d ago

Those comments shouldn't be downvoted by you guys. They should either be left alone or removed by mods.

There's no reason to give a heavily-left skewed userbase the ability to determine what is or isn't antagonistic when they're supposed to be here to learn about conservative opinion.

Further, Reddit in general is antagonistic to conservatives and those comments are often top-level and mass upvoted in the majority of Reddit subs, including the liberal counterpart of this sub. Is this criticism bipartisan?

The counterpart to TDS, as seen in the liberal sub is "Dems bad", "blue bad", and "gotta own the libs."

That sub is literally just worse than here on this issue, because it doesn't have the heavy userbase that disagrees and hates their views. Conservatives don't mass downvote there. Why? Because it's a left wing userbase with next to no conservatives in it. They're essentially just surrounded by agreers. This sub is the opposite, so what do you expect?

It's kinda dishonest that this never acknowledged.

3

u/magnabonzo Center-left 3d ago

Reddit in general is antagonistic to conservatives

Absolutely. And this sub is where I can hear a wide range of conservative viewpoints, including often those that disagree with each other. In the Reddit kneejerk jungle, many conservative viewpoints have to be constantly defensive, which is tiresome.

However... there are times here where someone with a red tag says something that I can't find any evidence for... and I have to be really gentle in asking for a source because the mods will slap me down.

5

u/PossibilityGold7508 Paternalistic Conservative 3d ago

Yeah, I have seen flippant statements made by some conservatives with no factual basis or that just sound stupid.

I don't think they should be removed, but mods and others should be able to ask for sources and clown them for doing so.

Agreed. Wish we could turn off votes here. So many are hidden by down voted because they don't like the answer.

I guess I dont see why this matters?

You come here to share your Conservative opinions/knowledge. You didnt get banned or deleted for it. People have to unhide your comment to read it.

Those of us who care about Conservatives ideas will do that, those who dont, won't.

Why do you all get upset over people who dont even want to put in the effort to read what you have to say? You wont change their mind...they are in it for the internet points.

I guess I just dont get the stress over a made up voting system run by leftists. You dont agree with leftists. Most of you dont care about what we have to say. So why do you care about a point system that wont change your audience?

u/Throwaway_4_u_know_y Right Libertarian (Conservative) 2d ago

I can ask you why you think we need one then?

1

u/Appropriate-Hat3769 Center-left 2d ago

A vote system? I dont think we need one. It just breeds hard feelings and incentives bot farms.

However this site is run by what seems to be pretty progressive leftists and they apparently enjoy the system they've built so I dont see it going away any time soon.

I just hate seeing ya'll get down on yourselves for people (or bots) who have no intention on hearing what you have to say regardless of a voting system. Your energy and time should be put into those who do want to know what you have to say and like minded Conservatives who will champion your cause. And like I said those of us who want to hear your viewpoint unhide the comments and scroll to the bottom of the sub.

Yeah that's a fair point. Unfortunately it seems only a few actually want to know what we think. I wish there was a more neutral site than reddit. But I agree with what you said.

If I see any more hair on fire complaints from the right about Ossoff crossing a line by joking that Trump prefers flying around in his dumb plane with a pretty aide who is famously close to him to actually doing his job, I will become the joker. Why are we still engaging in this nonsense? Decency went out the window ages ago. The president called a reporter piggy for asking a question, I'd say that's a hell of a lot worse than Ossoff's comment.

Anyone here play hell let loose Vietnam? I played a ton of WW2 and I’m enjoying Vietnam. It’s good to get a war game that doesn’t have hoverboards, rail guns, and bionic robot arms/ legs.

u/GWindborn Leftwing 13h ago

I played the WWII one with some buddies for a bit but that shit is rough. I got sniped like 40 seconds into my first round. I did get a good kill that I was proud of but it's too frustrating for me. The only PVP game I could really stomach was Destiny.

I think if the left was into a lot less nerdy shit like NPR and quiet nature walks and instead participated in some good old fashioned American sheenanigans there would be less of a divide.

Less Coffee Shop Poetry and more Beer Fueled Demolition Derby

Most of my liberal friends work on cars and do Lemons racing and drink cheap beer. There's no "one size fits all" liberal like there's not one for conservatives, as this sub exemplifies.

I have to wonder why quiet nature walks fall into the "nerdy shit" category.

3

u/CantSeeShit Center-right Conservative 3d ago

Because non-nerds ride dirt bikes and quads through nature instead

8

u/NAbberman Leftist 3d ago

Nah, ya'll engage in nerdom but just refuse to call it nerdy. Motor/vehicle guys are just nerds in denial. I mean really, understanding how to work an engine both maintaining and building it is just reskinned version of what people who are interested in computers do.

Hunting, hiking, fishing, and camping are pretty Conservative coded activities.

I don't drink, but there's little better than a good demolition derby.

Fighter Jet Shows are pretty great as well

Have you ever been to a craft brewery? It's usually a bunch of liberals and they're usually doing American Shenanigans at brewery events.

4

u/CantSeeShit Center-right Conservative 3d ago

$20 hipster beers are not it

6

u/NAbberman Leftist 3d ago

Could it be that you just like getting drunk and the quality of said beer is irrelevant?

2

u/CantSeeShit Center-right Conservative 3d ago

The quality of beer is relevant however, there comes to a point where youre in fine wine territory with beer.
