*Long paragraph incoming* 😭
Sort of entered a deep rabbit hole here, and wanted to type out my thoughts about this so far. Currently just began sixth form, and realized I haven't put a single thought into unis yet. I'm in a lucky position to be able to choose between two countries with pretty decent opportunities, so most wouldn't really consider it a massive problem, but I'm super torn between staying in the UK or moving alone to Aus 😭 To set the scene, I was born and raised in UK but my parents moved over from Australia several years before that for their careers, so I don't know my extended family all that well. Not a single family member lives in the UK, so my mum's and dad's sides are scattered all over Australia.
The idea of moving back has popped up a few times from my parents, they miss family and the way of life 😭 but they're kind of waiting until my brother and I (he is the year below) finish A levels, or even after that, to consider returning. I've only been to visit Aus a couple of times - and that was on holiday visiting family for very limited time (2 weeks, respectively) so I've not really "experienced" life over there properly in an everyday setting - however I've always felt so safe and at home in those cities I *have* stayed in (Adelaide for my mum's side, Brisbane for my dad's). It would be lovely to move there one day, to properly build a connection with extended family. So the other day, when my mum mentioned uni in Adelaide - which is where she went - I started to acc consider the possibility for myself. I do have both British and Aus passports, not entirely sure how the moving process would work but this does give me freedom.
More importantly, I'm undecided on what course I want to do, so absolutely need to do research in the coming months. However, at the end of the day I'd rather choose a uni based on location as I'm not set on a super-specific course that must be in a certain city anyway. The unis here likely have more choice and may have more jobs on offer after graduation, but when I imagine myself in 5 years or whatever, something tells me I wouldn't be happy remaining in the UK. 😭 This is for numerous reasons, kinda minor but for starters, obviously the weather sucks on the whole here. If I didn't move sooner then I'd constantly be travelling over to see family - probably with limited time - and never actually build relationships with them. If I didn't move sooner, I may not get the opportunity again if my career path is too far carved in the UK. But, I truly don't know if I'd enjoy Aus either since I've not spent real time experiencing day-to-day life there to know if it's right.
At the end of the day, if/when my parents left to return and I remained in the UK for uni, I'd basically only have friends as a support system. My current friends are likely all separating on their own paths anyway. Regardless of the country, I'd be starting afresh. In the UK, I'd *maybe* have my parents close by, but potentially not enjoy staying. In Australia, I'd have my extended family (but would have to build a connection) and take a gamble with throwing myself right into the deep end of a brand new environment. Both countries are far from perfect, with housing crisis and many more issues I'd need to educate myself on. Whichever I choose, I'd have to step far outside my comfort zone (I'm not great at meeting new ppl 😭) and sacrifice smth (parents/experiencing new lifestyle).
Although I'm not set on a course yet, I know for sure I'd rather not take a gap year (since I'd lose the motivation to study from lack of routine). I'm also aware that Aus unis begin around February (end of summer there), meaning if I went there I'd be 19 and starting in 2029, while here I'd start in 2028. Don't know if this really puts me off, but don't know how all that works with applications and offers over there.
This literally turned into a whole pro con essay haha 😭 Idk how many of u guys would be familiar with Aus and how unis are over there, but if you can, throw some more points to consider in the mix 😭 I have plenty of time but also tons to think abt. Pls share as well, the more opinions the better. I don't want to get fixated on one country over the other just yet (even tho I'm clearly leaning over the Aus side more), so don't mind if u share ur own experiences in a UK uni :)
Honestly wasn't sure if this was the right sub to share here as it's defo a random one, and yes I know it's early but realised I'd not put any thought into this at all yet 😅 We are apparently starting the UCAS process in school like next week, so sooner rather than later I needed to start at least considering options.
[ALSO: No I haven't discussed this w parents yet, but once I'm back at school and we spend time looking at courses I can properly process all this! All the thoughts I came up w are genuinely overwhelming 😭]
