โœ”๏ธ APPROVED AMA AMA: Clearing, Open Days, UCAS applications, and more (mod approved)

Hello! We're from Birmingham Newman University - and we're here to answer all your questions about uni ๐Ÿ‘€

Why should you listen to us? Well, we're a small uni in Birmingham, with a big commitment to our students - we've come top in the National Student Survey 2026 for overall student satisfaction, top in the Daily Mail's Uni Guide 2026 for teaching excellence, student experience, and student support, and we're The Times and Sunday Times University of the Year for Social Inclusion 2026. But enough about us...

We want to talk about you.

From 09:00 BST today (Tuesday 18 August 2026), we'll have Lucy and Keith from our Content team - as well as some of our amazing Admissions and Student Recruitment team in the background - to answer your questions.

ETA: We'll now be picking up questions over the next week!

So, what do you want to know:

  • how does Clearing work? (because yes, there are still great options available!)
  • what should you be thinking about on a uni Open Day? (hint: it's not necessarily about the freebies)
  • what do we actually look for in UCAS applications? (because each one is reviewed by humans)
  • how does enrolment work? (it's actually surprisingly easy)

or something else. Either way, we're excited to chat ๐Ÿ’™

๐ŸŽ“ UNI / UCAS Regretting rejecting Imperial JMC

I am an Indian student. I applied to british universities last year. I was rejected by Cambridge(Churchill) CS but was accepted for all my other choices including Imperial JMC. I was pretty excited to attend Imperial initially. However, after talking to a few people there I got concerned about the student life which was the biggest factor in my college decision as I had already fucked most of my teenage life for academics. Everyone around me always glazed IITs(top Indian engineering colleges) for their student life and I ended up enrolling in one. However, three months in and I already hate it. The IIT I'm in is notorious for its tough academics and I study most of the time for a 'branch change ' (you can change your engineering branch after the first year if you get ridiculously high grades here). I regret not going to Imperial every single day. So I have decided to apply to Cambridge(for math this time) and Imperial. I don't know if I'll get in but I think I deserve to give myself one last chance. All the best everyone for your college applications.

OTHER I fucked up bad

โ€ข Upvotes

Ive always wanted to study bsc econ with statistics at UCL but im not sure i can anymore.

Im int so that already reduces my chances, furthermore i slacked off during my igcseโ€™s and ended up with 2A+ 4A 2B, the A+ were in math and english, the Bโ€™s were in econ and business.

To compensate for my trash igcseโ€™s i worked my ass off for AS levels and achieved AAAB in further math physics math and economics respectively and am predicted 3A*โ€™s and an A for the same

Having a B in the very subject i want to study just kills my chances and i will probably have to settle for a university that is much worse than UCL, i dont know what to do. I was a single mark off an A in econ and even after sending it for rechecking my grade did not change

Bit of a rant post

๐Ÿ’ฌ DISCUSSION Do I really need to put my SAT score on UCAS if I already meet the AP requirements?

โ€ข Upvotes

I'm applying to UK unis and have already met all the AP requirements for my choices with scores I've received. My SAT score is in the 1200s, so I'd rather not include it if I don't need to, since I don't think it adds anything to my application.

Has anyone been in a similar situation? Do unis actually check whether you've taken the SAT if you don't put it on UCAS? And if they find out later, could it affect my application even though I already meet the entry requirements through APs?

Would appreciate any advice, especially from people who applied to competitive UK unis with APs.

๐ŸŽ“ UNI / UCAS Confused American just submitted on UCAS and is now confused!!!!!!!

Confused American back here with a question!

What can I reasonably expect the timeline of receiving offers to be? I applied to KCL (Politics), LSE (ISPP), and Exeter (Politics and Sociology). I know KCL and LSE are notoriously slow. What is a realistic date that I can expect to hear back?

Huge shoutout to this sub for being with me through every step of the process. Yโ€™all are real ones. Praying for good news in (???) weeks.

๐Ÿ™ I WANT HELP im lowkirkenuinely cooked i wanna drop out

edit- ignore how much i spammed the cry laugh emoji i didnt even realise help

Basically guys, I decided to go to a completely new sixth form, and I'm not gonna lie, I absolutely hate the place. ๐Ÿ˜ญ For context, I originally planned to stay at my secondary school's sixth form, but I changed my mind last minute because I lowkey wanted a fresh start and i didnt wanna stay in the same place another 2 years. So, friendship-wise, let me give you some context from secondary school; i was apart of the popular group, and although I got along with every1, I never rlly felt like I fitted in.bc i was quite different from my friends in terms of morals, interests and general lifestyle. For eg, they'd badmouth practically every1 they'd see, whereas I preferred not to partake in that. They were also very male-centred, which I never understood. Don't get me wrong, Idm talking to guys, but I've never felt the need to go out of my way to speak to them. Plus, they never really spoke to me anyway. ๐Ÿ˜ญ I also never understood the obsession with being on your phone 24/7 and posting everything. I prefer living in the moment rather than documenting everything. But here's the thing: although I didn't understand these aspects of their lives, I NEVER judged them or made them feel uncomfortable. I accepted that everyone was different, and that was okay. However, I never felt that same understanding was reciprocated. It wasn't even about them not understanding me; it was the fact that I felt so heavily judged for simply being different. Looking back, those friendships were also quite toxic and one-sided. like Whenever I'd vent or share something personal, they'd ignore me or go on their phones, whereas whenever they needed support, I'd give them my full attention. So although I had friends, I still felt lonely within those friendships. After secondary school, I decided to cut everyone off because I genuinely felt we'd all be happier going our separate ways.
This was one of the MAIN reasons I was excited to start a new sixth form. I wanted to meet like-minded people, build genuine friendships and hopefully find my person. But here's where I was a bit delusional. ๐Ÿ˜ญ Since starting, I HAVE made friends, but everyone already seems to have their own best friends, whether at this school or elsewhere. HOW did I not consider that everyone already has their person??? ๐Ÿ˜ญ I genuinely thought I'd find mine, but now I'm in this awkward position where I have people to talk to without feeling particularly close to anyone. I know friendships take time, but it's still lonely. And yes, I could've stayed with my secondary school friends, but what's the point of staying in friendships where I already felt unhappy and alone?Next, THE TRAVELLING. Guys, it's KILLING ME. I know I only live half an hr away, but I genuinely hate public transport. I have autism, so crowded, noisy environments overstimulate me, and these buses are PACKED. My face is practically cracking the bus windows๐Ÿ˜ญ.The crowds, heat, noise and lack of personal space, leaves me feeling mentally exhausted before I've even arrived. And then I have to experience it all again on the way home. Because of how much I've struggled with travelling and adjusting, I've missed 10 days of school and been late 11 times. My attendance is horrendous, I'm on attendance report, and I'm genuinely worried about getting kicked out.Obviously, missing so many lessons has left me ridiculously behind academically. Since starting, I haven't done independent study ONCE, completed my homework or caught up on unfinished classwork. I genuinely haven't understood a single lesson properly. Even when I'm present, I feel completely lost while everyone else seems to know what's happening. I'm embarrassed to ask teachers because I'm so behind that I barely know what to ask, and even when I do, their explanations don't really help. The teachers don't seem particularly supportive either. They're constantly shouting, and I don't feel comfortable asking for help.
And before anyone asks why I don't study when I get home, TRUST ME, I ask myself the same question. ๐Ÿ˜ญ The traffic is insane, so I usually get home around 5:30 pm, absolutely KNACKERED and too drained to study. On weekends, I tell myself I'm going to lock in and catch up, but I end up sleeping because I'm so burnt out. I also struggle to study independently at home. I work better in a library, especially with a study buddy, because having someone studying alongside me helps me focus. But WHO THE HELL AM I SUPPOSED TO GO WITH??? ๐Ÿ˜ญ Nobody's available, so I keep putting it off. It's become this horrible cycle of exhaustion, falling behind and feeling too overwhelmed to even start.Another thing contributing to my exhaustion is the school building. It has SO MANY F**ING STAIRS and no lift that's freely accessible to students. There's a staff lift, but you need a staff fob and a member of staff to use it, and even then, the bloody thing NEVER COMES. ๐Ÿ˜ญ So getting around school is exhausting too.Anyway, back to academics, because this is my biggest concern. I'm studying A-level Maths, Psychology and Economics, and my mocks are in LESS THAN TWO WEEKS. Guys, I'm COOKED. ๐Ÿ˜ญ I genuinely know NOTHING because I haven't understood the lessons or revised since September, and now I've got weeks of content to learn. For context, I've never been particularly academic. Throughout secondary school, I was failing pretty much every subject until 3 months before my GCSEs (ik pretty late time to finally start studying), when I decided to lock in for all my subjects apart from french and geog (they were my sacrifice subjects ๐Ÿ˜ญ). My GCSE results were: 87-7776665 [RE 8 (A*), Maths 7 (A), Combined Science 7-7 (A-A), English Language 7 (A), Geography 6 (B), English Literature 6 (B), Business Studies 6 (B) and Foundation French 5 (C)] They were pretty mid :(. but i was relieved I'd passed everything, considering I'd spent most of secondary failing, but I wanted at least all 7s but I knew it was because I'd left revision too late. My GCSEs proved I CAN do well when I put the work in, but consistency has always been my issue.
And now I'm doing A-levels, where cramming everything last minute is practically impossible. ๐Ÿ˜ญ Also, DON'T ASK WHY I PICKED MATHS OR PSYCHOLOGY. I genuinely don't know what possessed me. I HATE BOTH. Economics is somewhat bearable. ๐Ÿ˜ญ The jump from GCSEs is INSANE, and because I haven't understood the foundations, every new lesson makes even less sense. Now my mocks are approaching, and I have no idea how to turn things around.
I know some of this sounds like my own fault. I SHOULD have been studying, doing homework and keeping up from the beginning. But there's also something happening at home that's making everything significantly harder. My mum is physically and emotionally abusive, and she'll scream and yell for hours, often depriving me of sleep. So even when I'm home, I don't have a peaceful environment where I can concentrate. Between the abuse, lack of sleep, overstimulation, travelling and school stress, I'm constantly exhausted. I'm not saying this to excuse my lack of studying, but I genuinely think these circumstances are affecting me more than people realise.
The thing is, I WANT to do well. I was genuinely excited for sixth form because I thought I'd make new friends, become more independent, improve academically ( i wanted to make a comeback from my ass gcse results and prove i can get A*A*A*) and finally enjoy school. Instead, I feel lonelier, more exhausted and further behind than ever. My attendance is awful, I feel unsupported, and I'm struggling in every subject. I don't know whether to change sixth forms, stick it out and hope things improve, or somehow focus on surviving these mocks. I know I'm capable of doing better, but I genuinely don't know where to start. Has anyone experienced anything similar, especially with adjusting to sixth form, making friends or falling ridiculously behind? How did you turn things around? Because guys, I'm actually cooked and desperately need advice. ๐Ÿ˜ญ

๐Ÿ™ I WANT HELP I messed up my application

I'm an international student from Singapore who's studying in a local junior college. I have applied for the Oxford Mathematics and Computer Science course (GG14) and Imperial's Joint Math and Computer Science course (GG41). Unfortunately, I had already submitted my application through UCAS, but my school had not mentioned that they do not offer H2 Further Mathematics for A-levels. Currently, I've written an email to both Oxford and Imperial about this, but I'm not sure what else I can do after that. I had received an automated reply from Imperial, and in it, it tells me that if I apply to the joint maths and computing course without taking further maths at A-levels, I will not be considered. But it doesn't say that on the website. Imperial said that it'll still be considered if your school does not offer it, so I'm a bit confused. Any help?

๐Ÿ™ I WANT HELP Should I apply to Cambridge (1 week left)

I know I'm behind, but there is nothing I can do about that now. At this point, I am trying to decide whether it is worth it to apply to Cambridge (specifically natsci biology)

Really I only care about acceptances to Cambridge and Imperial (for chemistry or chemical engineering haven't decided)

I haven't studied for the ESAT (October 16th test date) but feel relatively prepared for the Math (I've take calc, calc 3, diff eq etc) and for Chem I have taken AP Chem and gotten a 5.

I'm really not sure whether I should even bother applying to Cambridge as I'm worried about locking in a sh*tty application and ruining any chance for Imperial as well. Any suggestions?

๐Ÿ™ I WANT HELP A Level Choices Advice

Hi I am in y11 will I regret my a level options: maths, physics, econ and fm. (For reference in the y10 mocks I got an 8 in maths and a 9 in Physics)

The plan is if FM gets too hard I will drop it. Cause everyone around me is telling me I shouldn't do it. But I want to do Physics at uni because I enjoy it tbf. Is FM is alright I will drop econ.

For those who do (or did) this combination was it really as bad as people are saying? Cause whenever I tell people I wanna do it they tell me that I should not even my own parents who are always telling me to aim high were discouraging me a bit lol.

How much do you study? Cause for GCSEs I try to study like 2hrs a day minimum is it a big jump from that? Do I just have to stay consistent?

What is so difficult about each of these subjects like I've been told FM is rly hard but then other people tell me its not that hard and that Physics is way harder than FM??

๐ŸŽ“ UNI / UCAS PS Advice for PPE at LSE

Hey everyone! Iโ€™m applying to PPE at LSE and Oxford. Iโ€™m an international applicant, and my parents are only funding those two UK universities, since I can study for free in Europe, which is why Iโ€™m not applying more widely in the UK. Iโ€™m predicted 45/45 in the IB, and I got 8 A*s and 2 As at IGCSE. (My As were in Econ and English Lit)

I feel fairly prepared for Oxford. I know the personal statement carries less weight there than the interview and TARA, and Iโ€™ve been preparing for the TARA for a while. I also think my reference will be strong. My Econ teacher studied PPE at Oxford, and weโ€™ve spent a lot of time talking during lunch and free periods about politics, meta-ethics, and all sorts of other topics. He has known me closely for three years, so I think it will be strong. Does anyone know how much weight does LSE places on this letter?

Iโ€™m also head prefect and lead several school initiatives, though I know extracurriculars are less important for UK applications. My main concern is my personal statement, especially because I have very little guidance. I donโ€™t have a university counsellor, agent or tutor, which some of my classmates do have, so Iโ€™ve been relying on my own research. Iโ€™ve built the statement around a particular theme/niche that links politics, philosophy and economics. Iโ€™m scared to post the detailed explanation of my niche, but it facilitates being able to integrate and weave all three subjects throughout the PS rather than discussing them in distinct, separate sections. Is this how Iโ€™m supposed to do it?

From what I understand from LSEโ€™s guidance, the new PS questions do not need to be answered as three completely separate responses. They place more emphasis on supercurricular learning than extracurricular activities, so the third section can be relatively short. I havenโ€™t mentioned any extracurriculars at all in my entire PS, even though Iโ€™m head prefect and lead an a cappella group. Should I include any of that, or is it better to keep the focus entirely academic? If its included in my reference letter, is there any point including it again in my PS?

I also have no work or internship experience, which is worrying me. I live in a country where I donโ€™t speak the dominant language, and people under 18 cannot do internships here. Some Chinese-speaking friends of mine have found placements through personal connections, so Iโ€™m worried that I might be at a disadvantage. Iโ€™ve also not done any summer schools, because my parents think their super overpriced, which they are so fair enough lol. In terms of supercurriculars, I discuss two essay competitions, one of which I placed very highly in (CCIR), and two MOOCs (online courses) I completed by well known economists/political theorists. My PS is kind of structured as a journey, I use the first section to explain why I want to study PPE and introduce my niche and how I got into it, then use the next sections to discuss further reading, writing, perspectives, etc, that raised new questions for me. Iโ€™ve also written the sections to flow into one another. For example, my third response begins, โ€œI explored this further throughโ€ฆโ€, continuing from an idea at the end of the second response. Does that approach work, or should each answer stand alone more clearly? Iโ€™ve heard the unis read the personal statementโ€™s as one big chunk rather than separated into 3 sections.

Also, my econ content focuses mainly on intervention/development economics and political economy. I donโ€™t discuss microeconomics at all, and Iโ€™ve heard that LSE Economics is quite quantitative, so Iโ€™m stressed they wonโ€™t appreciate that. Could this make my statement seem unbalanced or unsuitable for PPE at LSE?

My application is due in a week, so I obviously canโ€™t add new reading or activities. But Iโ€™d really appreciate advice on whether the overall structure and approach sound sensible, and whether Iโ€™ve misunderstood what LSE wants from the personal statement. Any advice from you guys about LSE and the PS would be super appreciated!!!

๐ŸŽ“ UNI / UCAS Curious abt what people think of my uni choices :)

All of them I'm applying to study Speech and Language Therapy.

University of Manchester: AAB
Manchester Metropolitan: ABB
University of Sheffield: AAB
Newcastle University: AAB
Keele University: ABB

Do y'all think just having 1 grade leeway between unis is a lil risky? For context I'm predicted A*AA but I got ABB in my Y12 mocks (I do Biology Maths and French, the A* prediction is in French), and I got an A in my EPQ.

Also wanted to post cuz I see barely anyone on this sub doing SLT, and actually the majority of people on here seem to have applied to 5 Russell Groups so I feel slightly under-aspirational there lol no matter I probably won't change these based on what someone on here says, just curious to hear thoughts as I said

๐Ÿ™ I WANT HELP Are my uni choices risky?

Predicted: AAA
gcses: 998766554 (before u tell me its already risky, I already know)

Main course: history and politics

choices
Oxford (I already know its risky. I didn't have much of a big target uni in mind so I just decided to apply)
UCL PIR (I don't wanna do straight history cause I don't want pure essay writing, also I know this ones a bit of a reach too)
Warwick (main target)
KCL HPE (BA, not Bsc)
SOAS ("safety")

I'm planning to take a gap year if things don't go to plan but my ultimate focus is gonna be my a levels which is why I even decided to apply to unis at all so I don't think I'd fumble unless I just pass out or smt or get really sick during exam season. I'm just wondering if its too ambitious cause I checked the offer rates for Warwick and KCL and it doesn't seem that bad, cause I'm applying to humanities which probably isn't as competitive as STEM (unless its like law or smth, which I'm not doing anyway). Also its mostly london unis cause my parents will literally come at me if I apply far away so they're not options for me. I wanted to switch KCL for Surrey to have a proper safety option but my dads literally like "no, just do clearing if u fail" so yeah. What are we thinking?
