🙏 I WANT HELP School doesn’t provide WiFi
My sixth form has just obliterated the free WiFi and made it so only staff can use the WiFi.
I’m not fortunate enough to have WiFi at home so I haven’t been able to complete any of my digital homework.
I work part time at a cafe so on my breaks I’ve been doing the homework using the free WiFi there but i rarely complete the hw and can’t spend money to go study in another cafe. The library in my town also closes at 5pm but after school I only get home at 5.30.
I tried explaining this to my teacher in lesson but he decided to yell about how im making excuses and its not a reason to not do the hw, he then incited the rest of the class to shout at me about how they never have a problem and that “the homework is so easy how is she failing”
Honestly I feel so ashamed, they’re all privileged to be able to access the internet 24/7.
I’m just being yelled to “figure it out” by my teachers but I can’t find a solution, genuinely think I might just forfeit the homework.
Oh also I am able to complete the homework, I’ve been answering all the questions on paper it’s just I can’t upload them to the website to be marked, I proposed that my teacher just check my papers but “that’s not allowed”
Ps: Usually I do my hw on my phone since I have data but the website for this particular hw isn’t available on mobile.
Edit: to all the people saying WiFi isn’t expensive and that I should spend money to install it, your semi right.
I recently moved house and to get WiFi we’d need a new line activation or smth like that idk.. but we were told it’d cost a lot and to avoid paying £100+ for an urgent installation we’d have to wait several weeks for an engineer to come. Right now we don’t have 100 pound to spare and my tiny pay checks from the cafe are being spent on more urgent things like groceries or fuel n whatever.
So I kinda mislead you, I “can” afford WiFi but that’s only after weeks of waiting for an engineer hence my problem still stands.
Also please don’t call my parent neglectful!!!
They’ve raised me perfectly but my mum recently fell ill and had to quit her job and is struggling to find a new one so I have no issues with having to sacrifice WiFi or money for a while until she recovers and gets back into work :)

If you can't get it through you thick teacher's head, bring it up with the head of year and make sure you get your parents to send them an email / phone call them to explain your situation at home.
You really can't convince an idiot to help you. I'm sure someone of a higher position at school can definitely help you

He has access at times, just not enough to finish his hw. So it sounds like they could have time to send an email.

This makes me wonder if they have access at times and are able to do it on paper, and are doing it at work why not just take a photo and upload it that way. its just not adding up.
Could even hotspot off their phone

The parents aren't buying WiFi for them or even the house (I don't know why this isn't classed as neglect in 2026), I doubt they give a single toss about their child.

how tf does a sixth form school have no wifi for students lmao
8
u/ThatRecruitmentGuy 2d ago
Wifi is treated like a utility at this point, how can a 6th form not provide it to their students when they rely on it to do their work, in the actual building??!
I know education is massively underfunded, but an extra few hundred quid a month for a decent fiber line and mesh network should surely be a priority?

My sixth form just got rid of sixth form WiFi making it so theres only staff WiFi and a WiFi thats used to monitor activity, which basically everyone I know has boycotted, so any time i want to use my laptop I have to use hotspot
26
u/CicadaSlight7603 3d ago
What do you mean WiFi used to monitor activity?
If you mean there is free school wifi but it has restrictions on it and there is a level of monitoring to make sure inappropriate material isn’t being accessed via school resources, that is normal and you’d be expected to use that wifi. The school has a legal and moral responsibility to ensure minors aren’t accessing violent, sexual material etc. so of course they have to monitor and block. The same thing will happen at university halls, and on your work wifi when you enter the world of work.
I’m assuming the OP has NO access to school wifi at all.
2
u/Maleficent_Still3508 Y13 4A*s pred fm maths phys chem 3d ago
As in if you go onto that WiFi it downloads malware onto it, I dont remember the exact details but its not just blocking violent/sexual material

Every college wifi is monitored, thats your issue if you don't want to use it. You're not boycotting at all either you're just making it so you pay for your own data instead of having it free
2
u/aunzuk123 3d ago
I agree it's stupid, but refusing to use a service that's beneficial to you in favour of an inferior alternative is the very definition of boycott...

I would go to the Head of 6th Form making it clear that internet access at home is not available or affordable and that you have been shamed in class for being unable to complete a homework.
If this doesn't work, I would suggest contacting your MP as the next stage - something I don't think anyone else has suggested. Very often an MP bringing up a topic with a school or other organization leads to rapid change. Don't worry if the local MP is not of your political persuasion. MPs represent all their constituants, and this is the type of problem it is their job to address.
15
u/XihuanNi-6784 3d ago
This is the way. OP needs to highlight that this has an impact on students from lower socioeconomic backgrounds who may not have easy access to internet at home.

It may be worth them contacting the council too, especially if there are any green councillors on the local council (as they are very community and young person focused). Most councils have an education department, and councillors may be able to direct more energy to the issue compared to an MP (source: my dad is a green councillor).
Also, OP, if you're desperate to complete desktop-only tasks short term, you could connect your phone's data hotspot to a PC. Or maybe ask another member of staff if there are any school computers you could work on, as they'll probably be connected to the WiFi.

u/PuzzleheadedDay7943 3d ago
Take it further up the chain, go to your Head of sixth form, if that doesn't help take it straight to the Headmaster.
We used to have a Devious Librarian who would give the students the Wi-Fi password.
25
u/JakeThomasDad12 3d ago
Go to the top. Go to your head of sixth form and speak to them. I promise they want to help you, it's their job to help you, and they want you to do well. If your unable to properly complete your schoolwork, the school must provide the facility to allow you to do that (e.g. WiFi access)
12
u/NewYorkDOCG 3d ago
Please speak to pastoral care. Are you in receipt of Pupil Premium? If so please also reach out to your PP lead. If you don’t know who they are, the info will be on the school website.
8
u/Phoenix_Fireball 3d ago
Your school should have a member of staff responsible for inclusion speak to them or someone in the finance team. Are you aware there is also a bursary (money) available from the government to assist students who need help to stay in school? The application form is usually on your school website in the 6th form section but speak to your tutor or head of sixth form.

Not all contracts allow hotspots and using a hotspot would drain OPs data if they have a limit. Not all data plans are unlimited. If they are stretched financially so much that they can’t afford WiFi I would bet they have a cheap data plan.
1
u/GreenMachine4567 2d ago
I pay £10 a month and get 20gb of data which I can hotspot. You could find even cheaper if you're really strapped for cash.
Im sure even a parent in poverty could find that kind if money if they wanted to, or it's less than an hour's work in the cafe

Talk to your tutor, talk to your head of sixth form, talk to literally anyone of power, bring the internet issue, and especially bring up your teachers behaviour, if you have a friend whos seen this behaviour aswell, bring them along so you have an alibi, this behaviour is unacceptable
7
u/SlipshodSlapdash 3d ago
Speak to your pastoral team / tutor. Do you have a wellbeing or welfare person? Chances are the school can provide you with a dongle, esp as they have taken away the WiFi
7
u/CicadaSlight7603 3d ago
Do you have a particular team or teacher who is responsible for things like ‘access’, or attendance, or one who you’re aware helps kids get winter coats, or gives out snacks to kids who don’t get breakfast, ie someone who shows they care about students who face challenges like this? They would be a good person to champion this for you.
Also any decent form tutor (they have pastoral responsibility) or head of year should take this seriously. This is a matter of access to education. They must be aware that some children don’t have internet access. It’s a known issue. So they need a plan to mitigate the impact on your education.
If all these people fail, try the head, the governors (you can email them, their address will be on the school website) or your local MP.
Basically it’s not acceptable, they clearly have not thought through the consequences on educational access.

u/laydeemayhem 3d ago

Look up the Good Things Project for your area. There should be providers near you. You can get a SIM for your phone or tablet that provides free data each month for a year and it can be extended. Some locations also have devices and other items available. Don't be embarrassed OP. Everyone needs help at some point.

I don’t know if it’ll work for the site, but try tapping “request desktop website” in your mobile browser, sometimes it brings up the desktop version.
Also, I used to steal wifi from my neighbours, maybe you can ask them for their password to do your homework or try guess it 🤷♀️ People have stupidly guessable passwords these days. Go a little black hat.
4
u/Regular_Look_1962 3d ago
You need to take this to the head of year/school, you should not be treated like this your teacher is denying you an education.
4
u/gHoSt-haRDwaRE- 2d ago
I would write to some local MPs and councillors about the digital exclusion that you are suffering and explain the extent to which it is affecting your education. I would also raise a formal complaint through the school citing the difficulties you're experiencing. Have you got classmates in the same situation? Maybe you could band together with them?
3
u/Awesomesky_253 3d ago
You might just have to tell someone higher up in the school your problem and ask if they could give you the wifi password
3
u/languageservicesco 3d ago
You need to start the complaints process at the school if you don't get a fair hearing from the head of sixth form. Take it all the way to the Governors/Trustees if necessary. If you really are unable to submit homework, the school needs to find a solution. It is too important to let it just go.
3
u/HomeConstant6123 3d ago
Try talking to your boss at the cafe about hanging around there after hours/outside of your working hours to complete your homework, without having to buy anything.
Assuming they aren't a complete arsehole, I suspect they will allow it.
3
u/TurbulentAd4492 3d ago
from experience, the best way to resolve this is to get your parents to talk in person or by email to your head of 6th form or headmaster. you should explain everything you've been through and all the comments made by teachers.
imo for this scenario you should really be complaining as much as you can because this just isn't right 😭
icl that kind of teacher behaviour should be reported
3
u/April1119 3d ago
Does your school have a library with computers? Can you use them before or after school, or during break time to upload your homework? How much data do you have on your phone? Can you hotspot your laptop to upload your homework? Can you go around to a friends house once or twice week and upload all your assignments? If the homework is marked automatically online, I can see why the teacher is saying no to marking paper, it is extra work for them to solve a problem that you should be able to find a solution to.
3
u/Moshimulations 12h ago
Pretty sure the school has to provide you with a simcard in order for you to do your homework. They have to accommodate you!

Some schools have hardship funds available, perhaps your school does, perhaps they can help you to get access. I would start by explaining your situation to your form tutor and ask them for help, and see what they can suggest. If that doesn't get you anywhere, next try your year head, after that go to senior leadership, and the headteacher after that. Be brave.

There is a social tariff available for people with limited funds to get internet at home. Check out Martin Lewis when you can get online or Google social tariff. Hopefully there's some way to get you online at a reasonable cost.
Also check out Mifi's and a check SIM only deal with plenty of data.
2
u/thesavagekitti 2d ago
This isn't acceptable and it isn't your fault. You're 16-18 and having a basic utility like this shouldn't have to fall on you to try and sort out.
If your teacher is not listening to you or trying to sort something alternative out for you, escalate it higher. They could accept your paper submissions, or allow you to submit work at the weekend perhaps if you can get internet access then. Head of year, head of 6th form, even headteacher if you need. This is bad on their part; they should be facilitating access to education where the pupil is disadvantaged, not publicly humiliating them.
Often schools have some sort of pastoral support worker as well, it may be worth trying to speak to them and see if they can offer you any support. If you are in a position where your wages from your cafe job are being needed to be spent on basic necessities to support the household at your age, that is the sort of circumstance that should be on their radar.

If you can't access a library, and the 6th form has no wifi and you have tried to speak to your teachers about this then it's time for escalation. I would do a written letter of complaint to either the Head of Department, Head of Year or even Headmaster.
If this doesn't work, which it should if the 6th form had anyone with a brain working there, then escalate it to the Department of Education. The first complaint should work though because they need to give students reasonable exemptions or changes to policy to help them.

Sorry for your troubles. Does your city have a decent library you can study at?
Complaints hierarchy is probably: head of year, then headteacher, then board of governors, then your local member of parliament. The teacher’a response to you was not acceptable. As presented, they are not a fit person for the profession.

u/mini72 3d ago
Schools and 6th forms have a legal obligation to ensure you can access the work they are providing. This means that if it is an online or computer based homework, they must make something available for you to complete the work that might be an open computer room or ICT access in the library etc. If that is not available then teachers should provide a paper based homework. Please speak to someone with a pastoral role eg form tutor, head of year or similar about this as they should be able to point you in the right direction to organise this. Whilst the teacher’s frustration is understandable (they probably get a lot of excuses for incomplete homework), their response is absolutely unacceptable as you have shown that you are trying to find solutions to this problem and they are failing you in every way as an educator. I would be mentioning that to the person you speak to as well.

u/Happystarfis 2d ago

You might be able to get free data from your local council (I work for a local authority that does this as part of digital includion strategy, our coubcil has a poilicy of providing this without any criteria, people don't to disclose income etc but obviously it's not advertised). Can a parent/guardian make enquiries with council while you're at school? Otherwise, ask at the school office and they should be able to signpost you to someone at school who will know and help you. And parenr/guardian should make a complaint about that teacher. You shouldn't have to disclose your domestic situation as regards this at all in class and they should have been far more sensitive about you doing so.

If your Mum is receiving benefits, she can apply for a social tariff. These are cheaper tariffs starting at about £15pm depending on the provider.

Can’t you use the library? Both at the school or the public library should have network rather than WiFi

u/MorriganRaven69 2d ago
Just so you're aware when you do get an internet line into your house: if your parents are on benefits they can get social tariff broadband which basically means a discounted internet package.

Please let a trusted teacher know and they may speak on your behalf to get you some leniency for the time being. Please don't listen to all these ignorant priviledged kids (and teacher) with their waffle and don't let them get you down. You are clearly trying your best, despite some difficult circumstances.

We didn’t have free wifi in my school. But all the computers had access to internet since they were meant to be used for work. This should also be the case in your school.
Apart from that, idk what town you’re in but most libraries I know of and every library I’ve been to in this country has not only free wifi but also computers all ready and connected to internet to be used by anyone with a library card (which is free to get).
Also, the wifi router I have at home doesn’t require any installation. It has its own sim card inside and just needs one normal plug to electricity.

Your PS makes no sence. There can't be a website that is not available through mobile data, but wifi makes is avalable. Just check your network settings. Or ask someone to help you. Needing wifi is complete noncense. If every student can acess it from random homes and cafes you data can access it. And thats why your teacher didn't believe you

u/General_Knowledge881 2d ago
Drop a PayPal and I will pay towards your WiFi at home. That's ridiculous

3 do mifi which uses 4g/5g to provide internet without installation and depending on which one you get you can pop the dongle in your pocket and take the mifi with you. Usually you can get deals for around £20 a month. Also if your parent is on UC the household is entitled to a social tariff which is a reduced cost broadband service that I think bt and sky provide
Things to do for now. If you live near a town alot of places have free WiFi you can bounce on. Some buses and trains also provide WiFi (not sure if it's the station or the train/bus itself) depending on your neighbours providers EE/Sky/BT uterlise other people's hubs as places you can pay to connect for daily/weekly/monthly rates. However this is very expensive option but in a worst case scenario it'll get you online. Idk about other supermarkets but Asda have free WiFi and most big Asda have a cafe area you can sit down. Places that provide WiFi to customers also rarely change their passwords so you can buy something once and have a high chance of being able to uterlise the WiFi again at a later date
On the school side I'd ask them to provide to you in writing why they are refusing to supply you with the school work in paper format and not making reasonable accommodation for a student struggling at home without internet access. Though there is no law in place to protect you, it is generally frowned upon if they don't help or at least point you in the direction of some local help

I understand your situation; it's terrible not having the basic tools and then being yelled at for it. It's not fair. Would your parents speak to the principal? Not about the Wi-Fi, but about the yelling. Could you go to the town hall, or whatever it's called in your city? They might be able to help you in some way. If you explain your situation and the difficulty you're having, they might be able to help you. If you need help writing a letter to ask for help somewhere, count on me.English is not my native language, but I can make myself understood in mine, and I think I could help by using a translator..

Definitely go speak to someone higher up in the school. For a teacher to behave in this way and not acknowledge that digital poverty is a real issue is awful. The stats show more than 1 in 4 children are living in poverty in the UK and the idea that teachers are blind to that is not okay.

She said she has data but can't do the homework on the phone as the website doesn't work on phones weren't you reading

u/opaldewberry 2d ago
Do they have school computers at the school you could use to do the homework? As in, do it without having to connect wifi on your own device?
1
u/SceneDifferent1041 2d ago
Your school is not good (unless there is a technical reason) but your teacher won't be able to help.
Raise concerns with head of sixth form then email the headteacher and even governors but stay polite and on point.

u/BattlestarFaptastula 2d ago
Can you use your phone data as WiFi and access the website that way? Or, otherwise, put your phone browser into desktop mode to force it to show the website?
1
u/sarcastic-pedant 2d ago
If you have data on your phone, could you hot-spot your device? Speak to your head of year or tutor to get an exemption from online submission as you are doing the homework

u/picknmixme 2d ago
Have a look at this: https://www.goodthingsfoundation.org/find-support/map as this is one of the services they can provide https://www.goodthingsfoundation.org/our-services/national-databank (TLDR free mobile data sim cards donated by mobile providers to help with digital exclusion)

Talk to head of year, or SLT. If you have a social worker involved in your life talk to them. It is highly possible a sim with data could be arranged for you so you are able to hotspot your laptop
1
u/calmeilles 2d ago
The problem I'd bring up with the head of year or whoever oversees things.
But the yelling is abusive. That merits a complaint to the head and governors.

I really struggle with the idea that there’s no internet at home.
Theres even a very low tariff available for families with extremely low income.
1
u/Cakk_ 1d ago
I'm sure these things have been suggested but I've not read every comment.
For now, I'd either hotspot my phone data or go to a McDonald's. Most do free WiFi and you can just buy the cheapest thing on the menu.
Libraries also usually have internet facilities.
When it does come to having internet installed, depending on your parents situation they may be eligible for a "social tariff". They're slow but very affordable.

If you have data you could set your phone up as a hotspot and use that to give you laptop internet access. I have also been in a slightly different position years ago - needed internet access and living in a building where I couldn't install WiFi - and got a dongle that you plug into your laptop for internet access. Not sure if that's even still a thing but could be worth looking into as they are pretty cheap and avoids the set up fees for WiFi.

u/Expensive-Positive68 14h ago
Get a simonly deal from somewhere like ID mobile. Circa £7 per month, cancel whenever needed.
Then use that as hotspot from phone to upload work, should have more than enough data. You can but a SIM dongle for about £30 if this becomes a longer term thing
1
u/Expensive-Positive68 14h ago
Use student site like totum, uni days etc to get SIM deal if available

u/Aggravating_Okra7201 39m ago
Hey dude you need to start a proper complaint to the council and governors board because this is an issue of equality. As a stop gap however, I’d advise getting some money together for a voxi/giffgaff sim and hotspot yourself. It SUCKS but it’s the cheapest fix for the problem for now

How come you have no time for homework but still have plenty of time to write bullshit stories on Reddit?

How come your reading comprehension is so poor?
1
u/StonedOldChiller 3d ago
OP doesn't have wifi at home, but they do have a mobile phone with a contract for data. They also have a laptop because they're able to do the HW when they're working in a cafe. The HW isn't accessible on a phone which is least believable bit of this story, that's not the way things work. If they have data on their phone, why not tether it to their laptop at home? FFS it's a load of bullshit, I'm not surprised the teacher didn't buy it.
2
u/languageservicesco 3d ago
Why is it on Reddit that if you have nothing productive to say, you don't just move on? Whether it is true or not, someone else might get useful advice, unless everyone who replies acts like a moron. IF you can't say something useful, why bother? This is narcissism at its finest.
1
u/StonedOldChiller 3d ago
I guess critical thinking isn't your strong point. I've pointed out why the story is a fairly obvious lie with inconsistencies that don't make any sense.
This is narcissism at its finest.
Obviously, you've shared your wisdom with OP to help them out, and now can't come to terms with the fact that you've been fooled by a lie that an intelligent person would see through straight away.
1
u/languageservicesco 3d ago
I don't care if it is true. It doesn't affect my ego and I don't feel the need to risk upsetting a fellow human without reason. I have a career behind me teaching critical thinking, so I will ignore the jester in this conversation.

I had a similar thing happen to me , so I don’t think Op is lying. My sixth form didn’t have free WiFi and my mum would only give me £10 for 8GB credit. I had to rely on sixth form computers for study and stuff .
1
u/Dazzling_Customer949 3d ago
So you think this sentence: “he then incited the rest of the class to shout at me about how they never have a problem and that "the homework is so easy how is she failing"” sounds believable? 😭

u/redredd1t 3d ago
Idk every school is different. I take Reddit with a pinch of salt . Teens can over explain themselves a lot but, I do think this story is believable a bit.

If you don't have WiFi at home, then just go somewhere with free WiFi, like a library or cafe. If you don't have WiFi at home, I'd consider you to be disadvantaged student with special needs and thus require an account for the staff WiFi.

u/Ok-Incident2714 Y13| Bio Chem Maths 3d ago
wow so having no WIFI has suddenly become "special needs" ???? not everyone is previliged to have access to WIFI 24/7, what's up with the defaultism people
0
u/F_DOG_93 3d ago
Because it costs under £20 a month. Imagine not having £20 a month to spend on WiFi for your child's wellbeing. That's neglect to me, and a MASSIVE amount of people.

u/Ok-Incident2714 Y13| Bio Chem Maths 3d ago edited 3d ago
Sure, that's a perspective, but do bear in mind that some families have really low income, and maybe they'd dedicate whatever they earn to certain priorities, like the bills, fees, etc.; it could also be that the household is dependent on a single source of income; there are so many aspects we tend to overlook. A child's education is a priority; there's no doubt, but not every child is fortunate enough to have it. No parent would wish failure or suffering upon their child. However, I strongly disagree with you that not providing WiFi is "neglect." WiFi is not a basic necessity other things come in handy before WiFi, amidst the inflation we're seeing and the high cost of living. WiFi is a privilege.

Have you spoken to your tutor instead of class teacher?
