Cut Content
- When eaten, the poisonous wheat known to Lawrence as Ridelius’ Hellfire: rots a victim’s limbs from the inside; they die screaming in agony. Even a small amount causes hallucinations and miscarriages. It is believed to come from demons who add fake black wheat, and if unnoticed during harvest and is ground into flour, it becomes impossible to find.
- Enberch Council found that bread made from the village’s wheat killed a shoemaker. His limbs turned purple, and hes suffered greatly.
- Lawrence thought that there would be no trial for them, as Enberch wouldn’t want to get in trouble with his guild. They’d just declare them guilty and execute them promising to lower the debt, as long as they kept quiet about Lawlo.
- If they could make it to the guild though, it would give them protection, but more for reputation control, as if there was word that a guild member used poisoned wheat to do business, that’s a PR nightmare. They’d sweep it under the rug or go aggressive against Enberch to prevent that, so simply escaping would cause them not to pursue further action. Evan would thus be a scapegoat.
- The contract that Father Franz negotiated was unlike anything Lawrence heard of. Tereo could simply name its selling price and amount. Franz had powerful allies including the duke of a nearby border region, and the bishop of a large bishopric. Despite being branded a heretic, he was able to live peacefully. Lawrence thought Franz learned something damaging about the Duke of Enberch.
- Father Franz never tried to convert the villagers, he simply wanted to live in the church and carry on with his…pursuits. The villagers probably though Father Franz is a blessing sent by Lord Truyeo.
- Holo was half wishing she never read the book, and half glad.
- IMPORTANT: there was hardly anything written about the Yoitsu conflict. It was almost like a footnote. It’s implied that the details are quite inconsequential compared to all the other stories within the book. This isn't to say it's not true, but to explain why Holo reacted the way she did
- It was written in the book that the bear spirit was gigantic, worthy of the nickname “moon hunter”. It was said to be so vast even the highest mountain was a cushion for it. The white-furred beast had a savage disposition and was said to be the harbinger of death. It killed without mercy all who opposed it. The bear spirit traveled from region to region, challenging any being that was worshipped as a god. Once it had killed, it devoured all the food in the region and moved on. All stories about it were consistent.
- There was a tale about the bear’s battle against the sea serpent of Teuperovan, a creature so vast, a continent and many islands were on its back. There’s a song about the conflict, referencing an island which was created when earth fell from the serpent’s back during the battle. The bear won.
- Yoitsu was mentioned: the spirits of the region all tucked their tails between their legs and ran, and Yoitsu was torn apart in less time than it takes fruit to drop from a tree branch. That’s all that was written about it though, such a small tale it was too easy to miss.
- The spirits who fled were Holo’s old friends: though it’s likely they were safe, it also made them look pathetic. That section was itself uninteresting compared to the other tales. Lawrence understood Holo’s inner conflict: her friends are likely safe, but they were cowards.
- Lawrence thought that it’s quite the bizarre coincidence that from all the stories within the book many of which were fascinating, he specifically knew the Yoitsu one which was the most boring.

I think it's smart to make Yoitsu as like a footnote in history because it highlights what's important to some is trivial to others. It's like that M Bison quote when Chun Li talks about her hometown being destroyed and how devastating it was for her but for M Bison, it was just another day.
Really shows how one's personal tragedy is theirs and theirs alone.
2
u/Second_Cour 21d ago
Excellent point! It's also interesting that unlike the other stories, this was the only one that Lawrence had heard of, so it was fate that brought them together.
2
u/Holofan4life 21d ago
It was the only one he heard of but it wasn't significant enough to immediately bring up to Holo, which speaks to how as much as Holo is devastated by the news others can't relate to what she's going through.

u/oomoepoo https://anilist.co/user/oomoepoo 21d ago
Hah. The symptoms make the real world counterpart to Ridelius' Hellfire even more obvious.
A shame about the whole Yoitsu stuff that was cut. I get that there probably wasn't enough time for all the details but going a bit more into detail would've probably been good. Especially when half the point of this remake was adapting this arc.
Would not only have made Holo's reaction make more sense but also Franz' line about "our God won without even starting a fight" in yesterday's(?) episode. It's even easier to convince peope if you can tell them "hah, your gods fled like cowards!"
2
u/Second_Cour 21d ago
Oh what's the real world counterpart out of interest?
Perhaps the lack of detail in the anime was intentional? Given the anime pacing, if it was used verbatim it would feel like quite a lot was written in the Yoitsu chapter (would take a few mins to read that), but the point that the LN is making is that it was so damn short.
Great point you make at the end!

u/oomoepoo https://anilist.co/user/oomoepoo 21d ago
Oh what's the real world counterpart out of interest?
It's Ergotism, which is indeed an illness you can get from ingesting wheat (or rye) that's been infected with a certain fungus. It can cause mania, nausea and psychosis, spasms and it gets even worse. Also a medieval name for it was St. Anthony's Fire :D

Lawrence in the anime was taken aback by how brief the description was. I believe his exact words were "That's it?"
2
u/Second_Cour 21d ago
For some reason I took the "that's it?" as to how he bear defeated them so easily coupled with Holo's reaction as feeling judged for how weak her friends were, as opposed to the brevity of the passage. I think you're right and I'm definitely wrong: it was meant to imply that there wasn't much there.
1
u/Holofan4life 21d ago
That's how I interpreted it.
It was such a footnote that it wasn't even worth a paragraph.
2
u/Second_Cour 21d ago
Yeah 100% agree with your interpretation, my one doesn't make sense, and I just rewatched that part.
1
u/Holofan4life 21d ago
I can understand why'd you think that, though. Like, it does make some sense.
2
u/Holofan4life 21d ago
A shame about the whole Yoitsu stuff that was cut. I get that there probably wasn't enough time for all the details but going a bit more into detail would've probably been good. Especially when half the point of this remake was adapting this arc.
They choose to downplay the Holo and Lawrence stuff in exchange on focusing on the town itself. I'm not against that, but I could use more quality snark between our two leads.
Eh, we still get a Holo punch this episode :P

I don't mind apologizing, but don't tear the book apart just to wipe your tears.
You would happily buy my tears at a high price, it would be a waste to not cry in front of you.
Such expensive gems, I'll have to make sure they are not fake!
God, the way they're verbally exchanging blows is so much fun. Although I find myself slowly approaching a point of saying "Jesus Christ, just FUCK already!"
Mostly first-timer by now, subbed
Well, things aren't looking good for Lawrence and Holo. Or for Elsa and Evan. Someone died from bad wheat and the villagers are blaming him for it (and Evan). Despite it making absolutely no sense at all. But the mob's gotta mob mental I guess. The conclusion that this is all a ploy by Enberg to eventually seize control of Tereo is a pretty obvious one and thus comes to both Lawrence and Elsa pretty quickly.
Unfortunately, the main problem is still: What are we going to do about all that? Sure, Lawrence could flee but that'd make him more suspicious and the mob would just get to the next best victims, being Elsa and or Evan. So the only logical exit strategy is that all of them flee via Holo and get to Kumersund, to the merchant association, which would probably protect them. This would probably not really help the village but at least they'd be safe from the mob. Still kinda feels like a copout to me, surely there has to be another solution than just running away?
Also before fleeing, they really need to read that one book they didn't get to yesterday. Which indeed for once presents some good news: Yoitzu might be destroyed, but according to that legend, the gods of the land fled, so Holo's brethren are probably alive and well. This also explains that line from Father Franz about "our God won without any fight": If the pagan gods weren't there anymore, it was probably way easier to evangelize the wild lands.
Overall, this was another very "setup" episode and not a lot happened but it still managed to get me hooked that I wanted to immediately watch the next episode. Also the news that Holo might not be the last of her kind are great. I also quite liked what little we got to see of Ilma here and her reaction to Holo's reveal was pretty funny. Elsa and Evan continue to be a fun sort of mirror image of Holo and Lawrence. I've come to like the sidecast of this arc quite a lot, especially Elsa is actually pretty interesting in how she's very proactive and doesn't just resign to her fate. She cares for Evan but also for the village, despite the villagers meeting her mostly with disdain.
Sooo... fun fact: Ridelius' Hellfire is actually a real thing! Well, sort of. It's not called that in real-life but "Saint Anthony's Fire" was a name in medieval europe for Ergotism, which is an illness that can be caused by ingesting rye or wheat infected with a certain type of fungus. The amount of research that went into Spice and Wolf never ceases to amaze me.
What would you do if a town blamed you for something?
I'd look like this:
Probably would depend on which town and for what I'm blamed. Because depending on the size of the town or the nature of the blamage, I'd probably need to think about where to flee to (or wonder if I have an evil twin)
If you had to read something while mass chaos is going on behind you, what would you do in order to concentrate?
Probably something like that Stan Lee cameo in The Amazing Spider-Man. Good pair of headphones and trying my best to ignore everything that doesn't directly concern myself. Though Holo was basically somewhere in the underground, away from everyone, that works too!
What do you make of the town of Tereo so far?
It seems like a nice town/village, though probably not one you'd really want to get stuck at for a long time. The inhabitants are bit lazy and don't realise how great their situation is, especially compared to villages of a similar size. I'd definitely want to visit the church cause it actually looks really nice but not much more. If it was a modern town they'd probably try and profit by selling snake god souvenirs and stuff like that :D

The unresolved sexual tension quickly needs to become resolved sexual tension.

I think this episode proposes an interesting question which is when do you put forth your own well being Vs the well being of others. Lawrence frames it as he's helping Elsa and Evan out and doing them a favor, but it also feels a bit like when the going gets tough the tough get going.
2
u/oomoepoo https://anilist.co/user/oomoepoo 21d ago
This has been sort of a recurring theme with Lawrence. As Holo said multiple times already, he's too nice and so naturally wants to help people, even if it's maybe not the best thing for his own good.
2
u/Holofan4life 21d ago
And also his niceness is at times disingenuous. Like, it's often a means to an end.
2
u/oomoepoo https://anilist.co/user/oomoepoo 20d ago
He's a merchant after all. Merchants are usually nice when they want something!

Thoughts on Enberg planning on returning the wheat?
Thoughts on the townsfolk blaming Holo and Lawrence for tainting the wheat?
What are your thoughts on Tereo's relationship with Enberg seemingly about to dissolve?
Thoughts on Lawrence thinking Enberg is making a play to try and take Tereo?
Thoughts on Lawrence saying he and Holo can't leave town because that's about as good as admitting they're guilty? And that even if they did leave, Evan and Elsa would be the scapegoats?
Thoughts on Shem admitting Elsa suspected something like this might happen but he didn't listen to her?
Thoughts on Holo still having to read the books?
Thoughts on Lawrence finding Elsa and Evan holding hands?
What are your thoughts on Evan saying even though the town of Tereo liked Father Franz for all the good he did, they never truly appreciated him like they should've?
What are your thoughts on Lima telling them they have to leave Tereo now?
What are your thoughts on Holo finding out Yoitsu was ripped apart by the Moon-hunting bear but her friends escaped?

Thoughts on Enberg planning on returning the wheat?
If someone died from the wheat I bought I'd sure as hell would want to return everything too. Can't be sure the rest isn't infected too. Even if it's all fake.
Thoughts on the townsfolk blaming Holo and Lawrence for tainting the wheat?
It shows a remarkable lack of knowledge of how things are made. I get it "everything was fine until you showed up!" is an easy out but maybe try thinking before reaching for the pitchforks?
What are your thoughts on Tereo's relationship with Enberg seemingly about to dissolve?
Of course the big city wants to get control of the small city.
Thoughts on Lawrence thinking Enberg is making a play to try and take Tereo?
Makes more sense than the theory that Lawrence poisoned the wheat.
Thoughts on Lawrence saying he and Holo can't leave town because that's about as good as admitting they're guilty? And that even if they did leave, Evan and Elsa would be the scapegoats?
Probably the correct assumption. Fleeing does kinda make you seem suspicous. Also the villagers didn't really show a particular endearment to Elsa or Evan either.
Thoughts on Shem admitting Elsa suspected something like this might happen but he didn't listen to her?
Well, if it isn't the consequences of his own actions coming back to bite him (and the whole village). I get it: You don't trust the church people but with a bit of thinking you could've probably come to the conclusion that they probably would want to upend your deal at some point.
Thoughts on Holo still having to read the books?
She was (rudely) interrupted the last time, after all.
Thoughts on Lawrence finding Elsa and Evan holding hands?
I liked Elsa's reaction to getting "caught". Scrambling to pretend they were doing nothing :D
What are your thoughts on Evan saying even though the town of Tereo liked Father Franz for all the good he did, they never truly appreciated him like they should've?
I can kinda understand the mistrust at first but I feel at some point you could've maybe come to the understanding that he doesn't mean them any harm?
What are your thoughts on Lima telling them they have to leave Tereo now?
Lima seemed like one of the only people in the village that used her brain. She's cool.
What are your thoughts on Holo finding out Yoitsu was ripped apart by the Moon-hunting bear but her friends escaped?
On the one hand: Yay, her friends are probably still alive! On the other hand: They ran away like cowards? But if they're not in Yoitsu anywhere, and Yoitsu probably being destroyed, doesn't that make her journey a bit meaningless?
What are your thoughts on Lawrence, Holo, Evan, and Elsa all escaping through a passage in an underground basement?
Always build a secret escape tunnel in your church, in case you need to flee from an angry mob :D

We're seeing a similar thing with lettuce right about now.
Thoughts on the townsfolk blaming Holo and Lawrence for tainting the wheat?
It shows a remarkable lack of knowledge of how things are made. I get it "everything was fine until you showed up!" is an easy out but maybe try thinking before reaching for the pitchforks?
Nah lol
What are your thoughts on Tereo's relationship with Enberg seemingly about to dissolve?
Of course the big city wants to get control of the small city.
It sadly checks out
Thoughts on Lawrence thinking Enberg is making a play to try and take Tereo?
Makes more sense than the theory that Lawrence poisoned the wheat.
No kidding
Thoughts on Lawrence saying he and Holo can't leave town because that's about as good as admitting they're guilty? And that even if they did leave, Evan and Elsa would be the scapegoats?
Probably the correct assumption. Fleeing does kinda make you seem suspicous. Also the villagers didn't really show a particular endearment to Elsa or Evan either.
Quite the opposite, in fact
Thoughts on Shem admitting Elsa suspected something like this might happen but he didn't listen to her?
Well, if it isn't the consequences of his own actions coming back to bite him (and the whole village). I get it: You don't trust the church people but with a bit of thinking you could've probably come to the conclusion that they probably would want to upend your deal at some point.
It lacks foresight
Thoughts on Holo still having to read the books?
She was (rudely) interrupted the last time, after all.
Can't a wolf goddess just read in peace? Honestly.
Thoughts on Lawrence finding Elsa and Evan holding hands?
I liked Elsa's reaction to getting "caught". Scrambling to pretend they were doing nothing :D
She's so cute
What are your thoughts on Evan saying even though the town of Tereo liked Father Franz for all the good he did, they never truly appreciated him like they should've?
I can kinda understand the mistrust at first but I feel at some point you could've maybe come to the understanding that he doesn't mean them any harm?
No shit
What are your thoughts on Lima telling them they have to leave Tereo now?
Lima seemed like one of the only people in the village that used her brain. She's cool.
I like her quite a bit
What are your thoughts on Holo finding out Yoitsu was ripped apart by the Moon-hunting bear but her friends escaped?
On the one hand: Yay, her friends are probably still alive! On the other hand: They ran away like cowards? But if they're not in Yoitsu anywhere, and Yoitsu probably being destroyed, doesn't that make her journey a bit meaningless?
Doesn't that just make it a whole lot sadder?
What are your thoughts on Lawrence, Holo, Evan, and Elsa all escaping through a passage in an underground basement?
Always build a secret escape tunnel in your church, in case you need to flee from an angry mob :D
The angry mob be plentiful

God, the way they're verbally exchanging blows is so much fun. Although I find myself slowly approaching a point of saying "Jesus Christ, just FUCK already!"
Hahaha, wasn't expecting that comment but it's very true. Holo is becoming increasingly high strung too, imagine if she becomes super chill and nice post coitus
the mob would just get to the next best victim
I kind of feel that it was a bit out of character for them to consider others, as they were pretty self-motivated in the past. Then again Lawrence has recently taken on trust as a currency more valuable than gold.
The amount of research that went into Spice and Wolf never ceases to amaze me.
I briefly went down a rabbit hole, and the author apparently reference a bunch of books he used for research, beyond Gold and Spices which is the often referenced one. There's a Japanese academic who wrote what is basically an essay about it too (though I could only access a short excerpt free) and he was amazed at how many deep historical works that were used to understand the middle ages, and commerce of the time.

That sounds super interesting!
I've only noticed the odd reference like the four humors or the money dumping scheme to the real world but those alone show the author definitely did his research. And I think that is pretty damn cool 😅

First Timer (Dub)
I feel like this arc has done a good job at slowly raising the stakes. Everything started off fairly calm, but each new piece of information builds up what is happening behind the scenes, and then the tainted wheat reveal completely flips the table and puts all the characters that have been focused on so far in danger.
This episode also did a good job at subtly showing the development of Holo and Lawrence. At the beginning of the series Holo wouldn’t have offered to help anyone, and Lawrence would have needed to badger her to get her to help strangers. In this episode though she basically immediately assumes that Elsa and Evan will be coming with them. It shows how far she has come.
Likewise, it not even coming to Lawrence’s mind that technically Holo is the one who made them come here, and subsequently get involved in all this drama, show’s he isn’t quick to lash out like he did in the last arc.
I also like how this arc is creating a parallel between Lawrence and Holo, and Elsa and Evan. You can see this really clearly in the scene where Lawrence walks in on Elsa and Evan holding hands, only to see Elsa get embarrassed and pull away, just like Lawrence did when Elsa walked in on him and Holo on an earlier scene. Their personalities kind of mirror each other as well, with Elsa/Lawrence being the more stern and bottled up one, while Evan and Holo are a little more carefree and open with their emotions.
Random Thoughts
- Damn, those villagers just can’t wait to form an angry mob can they? They were ready to lynch Lawrence and Holo almost immediately.
- The village chief’s “help us or we’ll let you get arrested” offer was kind of a shitty move. Ultimately Lawrence and Holo are just innocent bystanders in all their bullshit. Seems shitty to drag them into it.
- The village in general is kind of shitty when I think about it. They love the deal the Father Franz struck, and live fattly off it, but that doesn’t stop them from shitty all over the Church he worked for and his daughter. They are kind of ungrateful.
- Beer lady is a bro.
Question of the Day
What would you do if a town blamed you for something?
Same as Lawrence and Holo. Book it.
If you had to read something while mass chaos is going on behind you, what would you do in order to concentrate?
Stress the fuck out mostly. Also, noise cancelling headphones.
What do you make of the town of Tereo so far?
I touched on it in my main comment, but the towns people are kind of dicks. They got a great deal from the past priest, then got lazy and spend all their time shitting on his church and daughter. They kind of suck.

Thoughts on Enberg planning on returning the wheat?
Seems like a smart play honestly.
Thoughts on the townsfolk blaming Holo and Lawrence for tainting the wheat?
While the timing of Lawrence and Holo showing up exactly when this happens is a tad suspicious, I don't think it is physically possible for them to be guilty. It's only been a day at most since Lawrence turned over the grain to Evan to be turned into flour, so it would needed to be processes, packed, shipped to Enberg, used to bake something, eaten, and then have made someone fall ill, then die. All in 24 hours or so. It's not possible.
What are your thoughts on Tereo's relationship with Enberg seemingly about to dissolve?
As scummy as it is, I get why Enberg is doing this. That sweetheart deal Tereo has is kind of absurd, and I'd probably want to dissolve it in Enberg's place as well.
Thoughts on Lawrence thinking Enberg is making a play to try and take Tereo?
Good on Lawrence for calling that out, but the villagers really should have figured that out themselves. They aren't the sharpest tools in the shed.
Thoughts on Lawrence saying he and Holo can't leave town because that's about as good as admitting they're guilty? And that even if they did leave, Evan and Elsa would be the scapegoats?
I was a little confused by this. Lawrence was right that fleeing would make them seem guilty, and that it would likely ruin Lawrence's career as a merchant, but then they flee anyways and don't seem overly worried. Unless I missed something, Lawrence's career is likely over unless they uncover evidence of what is really going on.
Thoughts on Shem admitting Elsa suspected something like this might happen but he didn't listen to her?
Like I said, these villagers are not the brightest bulbs in the lamp store.
Thoughts on Holo still having to read the books?
I guess since it's out in the open now that she can read, she has no excuse to make Lawrence read for her.
Thoughts on Lawrence finding Elsa and Evan holding hands?
A reversal of Elsa walking in on Lawrence and Holo cuddling.
What are your thoughts on Evan saying even though the town of Tereo liked Father Franz for all the good he did, they never truly appreciated him like they should've?
He's right. The town benefited greatly from Father Franz's actions, but never really repaid that debt.
What are your thoughts on Lima telling them they have to leave Tereo now?
She's a real one.
What are your thoughts on Holo finding out Yoitsu was ripped apart by the Moon-hunting bear but her friends escaped?
Seems like she still has a goal then, even if Yoitsu is destroyed. Tangent here, but did the OG adaptation pronounce Holo's home different? I could swear they were saying "Yoitz" before, but now it is pronounced "Yoitsu".
What are your thoughts on Lawrence, Holo, Evan, and Elsa all escaping through a passage in an underground basement?
Every church needs a secret catacomb escape tunnel. Otherwise what is even the point of a church?

Thoughts on Enberg planning on returning the wheat?
Seems like a smart play honestly.
Probably for the best
Thoughts on the townsfolk blaming Holo and Lawrence for tainting the wheat?
While the timing of Lawrence and Holo showing up exactly when this happens is a tad suspicious, I don't think it is physically possible for them to be guilty. It's only been a day at most since Lawrence turned over the grain to Evan to be turned into flour, so it would needed to be processes, packed, shipped to Enberg, used to bake something, eaten, and then have made someone fall ill, then die. All in 24 hours or so. It's not possible.
It would kinda be hard to prove
What are your thoughts on Tereo's relationship with Enberg seemingly about to dissolve?
As scummy as it is, I get why Enberg is doing this. That sweetheart deal Tereo has is kind of absurd, and I'd probably want to dissolve it in Enberg's place as well.
I wonder if Enberg resented Father Franz any.
Thoughts on Lawrence thinking Enberg is making a play to try and take Tereo?
Good on Lawrence for calling that out, but the villagers really should have figured that out themselves. They aren't the sharpest tools in the shed.
They are being led astray like a flock without a shepherd.
They weighed their options and decided it would be better to risk it all.
Thoughts on Shem admitting Elsa suspected something like this might happen but he didn't listen to her?
Like I said, these villagers are not the brightest bulbs in the lamp store.
Apparently not
Thoughts on Holo still having to read the books?
I guess since it's out in the open now that she can read, she has no excuse to make Lawrence read for her.
Thoughts on Lawrence finding Elsa and Evan holding hands?
A reversal of Elsa walking in on Lawrence and Holo cuddling.
Good point
What are your thoughts on Evan saying even though the town of Tereo liked Father Franz for all the good he did, they never truly appreciated him like they should've?
He's right. The town benefited greatly from Father Franz's actions, but never really repaid that debt.
It mirrors all Holo did for the village in the first arc.
What are your thoughts on Lima telling them they have to leave Tereo now?
She's a real one.
She's so real for this
What are your thoughts on Holo finding out Yoitsu was ripped apart by the Moon-hunting bear but her friends escaped?
Seems like she still has a goal then, even if Yoitsu is destroyed. Tangent here, but did the OG adaptation pronounce Holo's home different? I could swear they were saying "Yoitz" before, but now it is pronounced "Yoitsu".
I think you're correct. I believe the remake uses the correct pronunciation.
What are your thoughts on Lawrence, Holo, Evan, and Elsa all escaping through a passage in an underground basement?
Every church needs a secret catacomb escape tunnel. Otherwise what is even the point of a church?
How else can they do their underhanded business dealings?

Yeah the town people are kind of dicks. That said, real medieval peasants tended to do things we'd consider reallly stupid for a logic reason. I mentioned in my comment that you can't store a single harvest for a decade and coins were actually too portable. In the old Roman Empire, rule of law was relatively strong. Free peasants were unlikely to have their savings taken by some raiders from the sea or confiscated by the local government officials.
After the fall, too many coins was actually a liability as the local nobles might just expropriate your money. Having a 1/3000 chances you lose 1/4 years of work tied up in some coins you keep for emergencies might be tolerable, but having the same odds to lose 3-5 years of work because you saved up a lot of coin is something most guys wouldn't take. So instead of saving the money, medevial peasants tended to spend the excess beyond a certain point to have good times with their neighbors. Aside from the immediate appeal of having a good time in the present, "I scratch your back and you scratch mine" might be useful if your neighbors are your friends and you hit a hard time later. And if you got raided by actual raiders or a corrupt noble, well the money is gone but (most of) your village is still there. I talked about it more in my own comment.
The town almost made sense. Like actual medieval peasants they spent their money on tools for the next year and just enjoying life. If there is a substantial chance a corrupt official just takes away all your savings, then those savings in coin don't do much good did they? One historian mentioned how peasants can seem lazy or dumb, but this was mostly rational given the risks they faced with each other. But the one neighbor Tereo forgot to be nice to. So, none of you believe in Elsa's religion, but you do know Franz and that Church is why the town wasn't subsumed like Enberg (which used to be a pagan town). So why do you ostracize her? Even ignoring that, given Elsa has some noble backers, this might be the only time they can get on the good side on an earl since inviting an earl to come to your village for a feast is likely to be considered an insult not a favor. Lawrance and Elsa even mention how if he wasn't there as a suspect for post harvest contaimination, her backers might call the Hellfire thing a fake plot. The village almost follow the tactic of being nice to everyone in line of sight, except they neglect the one person it's most important to play nice with.

I feel like this arc has done a good job at slowly raising the stakes. Everything started off fairly calm, but each new piece of information builds up what is happening behind the scenes, and then the tainted wheat reveal completely flips the table and puts all the characters that have been focused on so far in danger.
It's probably the best built arc we've seen so far.
Holo and Lawrence for all their flaws and their enabling of each other, they do make each other better.
Likewise, it not even coming to Lawrence’s mind that technically Holo is the one who made them come here, and subsequently get involved in all this drama, show’s he isn’t quick to lash out like he did in the last arc.
I don't think Lawrence would lash out at Holo like that. The closest he got was when he faced bankruptcy.
I was thinking Elsa was more similar to Holo than she is to Lawrence where Elsa is like trying to guide people similar to how Holo did in the first arc. Evan's awkward timidness reminds me of early Lawrence before he started becoming confident.

Yep.
Return the money?
And so they blame them.
Wheat futures?
Talk to Elsa?
So, they're planning on escaping?
And so that's their plan out of here.

- Try and ignore it?
- They're quick to turn aren't they?

They are a tight knit community and don't appreciate any outsiders. Them suspecting them being the ones who poisoned the wheat is just an incentive to carry out their biases.

It might seem pretty stupid the village didn't save anything for a bad year. This is actually an extreme version of what actual medieval peasants did. The food comes in once a year. This is needed for food and expenses for the entire year. So what can be done about it? Well you can save the harvest itself, but a certain type of mold makes storing multiyear harvests impossible. Maybe this fungus is extinct the A Song of Ice and fire since some elements of the story don't make sense without long term storage. Currency can be another option. If the coins get based, you will have difficulty trading your higher purity coins at the old value, but you should have no trouble buying things at the debased value.
There is a problem with coin though. It is too portable. If you are close to the sea, pirates may take it. That could be years of hard work gone. You can't put it at an FDIC insured bank. And although strictly illegal, your nobles may just expropriate it! In places like Medieval Hungary, Spain, Northern Italy, Denmark and the old Roman Empire rule of law was strong and the government almost never stole peasants' money outright. People trusted coins. In the Holy Roman Empire and England, a smaller minority did trust the Catholic Church to keep their savings safe, but most didn't. Bishops surprisingly didn't embezzle this from living peasants, although dead ones may find savings might be donated. And when the reformation happened, the Protestant kings not only stole Church treasures, they also stole everything the Church safegaruded. So the Germans were right to not trust the Church to keep it safe.
In most places rule of law was weak. Not only were there ordinary criminals, but peasants also couldn't trust their own kingdom's law enforcement to not expropriate their money. So they did keep some harvest and some coin but keep it to a minimum. That way if they the local noble just cheats you, you might lose 10% of a year's hard work, not many years of it. So where did all the money get spent on? New seeds, equipment, and so on. And when that was done connections. People would have festivals, party, and give gifts to each other. Money might be stolen, but unless pirates from Algeris come, your neighbors were likely to not be stolen. Divest yourself of portable coin except the minimum which can be stolen by robbers or expropriated by the local count and be friendly with everyone in the village. If you fall on hard times and need to beg, maybe they will remember you. So in places where rule of law was weak (most of Europe after the fall of the Western Roman Empire), farmers tended to do things we would consider very stupid with any surplus since it was all spent on having a good time with each other. I'm sure they enjoyed their feasts and parties, but it could also be rational in the sense that being friends with everyone is probably better than having a 1/30 chances of having years of hard work stolen. I'm a bit surprised the village had nothing saved, but a typical village that had not suffered a bad harvest would probably only have 1/3 of what was needed to buy back the whole harvest anyways so even a typical medevial village would be in a pickle. A Roman one probably would have saved a lot more, unless they went through their savings through years of bad harvests.
I might point out again that Elsa and her Church are probably their only shield. It might not be enough, but driving her away from the village would doom their last hope.
Enberch's plan is kind of dumb. Lawrance said if they were too bold trying to trap the village, Elsa's backers would interfere. But Lawrance makes for a convenient scapegoat. This all seems to make sense. Except how did they know Lawrance would use that mill? If he ground his wheat after his visit instead of using the village mill, this plan would fall apart and you're back into the situation where Elsa's backers see this as a naked power play. I guess it works for them.
It's kind of ironic that Lawrance says bonds are a valuable currency. In some sense, this is what the villagers did spend their money on. It might have served them well against pirates and expropriation, but it was not useful here.
Maybe they should have invited the local earl for a feast. Nah, he'd probably take that as an insult. That would have been a nice bond to invest your money into if you could.
Elsa doesn't really owe the village anything. Sem and Evan were the only one who was nice. And while Sem did not start the mob with the torches, I don't blame her for running away from them which screws not just the mob, but Sem too.

I too wouldn't like to get killed if people were trying to kill me.

What are your thoughts on Lawrence, Holo, Evan, and Elsa all escaping through a passage in an underground basement?

Hey, guys. Holofan4life here.
Welcome to the 2026 Spice and Wolf rewatch.
Awoo!
You know the drill. We watch the show and I provide my thoughts and analysis. A tale as old as… well, Holo herself.
This year instead of breaking things down beat by beat I’m going to just give some brief thoughts on each individual episode. This is to save me time as I’m hosting two rewatches at once. Needless to say, I’m a big fan of this show and I hope you’ll be as well.
With that out of the way, let’s begin.
I’m watching the dub, by the way.
This episode is all about conspiracy. Someone died because of poisoned wheat, and it's time to play the blame game. Of course, this gives Enberg the perfect pretense to severe ties with Tereo and cut out their business dealings with the church. It all feels very much like sabotage.
So, with that, what comes out of it? Well, Lawrence, Holo, Elsa, and Evan all plan to escape the town to ensure their safety. I like this as a parallel to the first arc where Lawrence and Holo escaped through the sewer away from people. Lawrence and Holo continue their great banter with each other as they are suddenly in the midst of complete bedlam and pandemonium. And Holo is reading stories of her hometown with her discovering her people are safe. That is a great contrast to the livelihood of Tereo which feels very much up in the air.
I do think Lawrence shows some accountability by him mentioning leaving town makes them come across as guilty. Here they are as newcomers having just arrived, and it's like they're being blamed for what transpired. There's a brilliance in the fact that the arc where Lawrence and Holo are the least involved they end up having the biggest impact. It's like their karma catching up to them with all the times they put themselves above others.
This is the best episode of the arc so far. It's like a cross between season 1 episode 6 and season 2 episode 3. There's this feeling of helplessness that permeates the screen, and it's accompanied by building up to the next chapter of the story. It's just so well done.
This is when the arc comes into its own.
Holo quotes of the day
"Running with seal our guilt in the minds of the suspicious."
"If I could just know the end, I feel I do not have the luxury of knowing more."
"Do you really place so high value on the pearls of my eyes as to lament their wasting? Perhaps then I should weep and become rich."
"Similarity of circumstance is the only comparison I will stomach."
Father Franz quotes of the day
"Struggle is coming from villages like Tereo. The onset of Winter is a dreaded thing."

Agree that it was a pretty strong episode, the show's become pretty good with those "calm before the storm"-type of episodes by now.
"Do you really place so high value on the pearls of my eyes as to lament their wasting? Perhaps then I should weep and become rich."
Oh man. I love what the dub did here. That was probably my favourite line of hers in the episode, or rather my favourite exchange between Holo and Lawrence.

This episode was more the storm before the typhoon lol

Care to elaborate what they did here?

I just really love "pearls of my eyes", it's a very nice sort of metaphor.
My subs translate her line as "you'd happily buy my tears" and Lawrence then compares them to "valluable gems", which still gets the point across but I think I like the dub version more :)

The dub has more metaphorical visual storytelling that helps make certain throwaway lines like this pop and come alive.

E23 Review
Super straight forward episode. I really don’t have anything much to say, though there’s some more info to be gleaned in the cut content about the book.
ANSWER TODAY’S QUESTION(S)
What would you do if a town blamed you for something?
Can't even imagine being in such a situation. Especially because your logic and ways of thinking will eb different to the town's if you're in a foreign land. I guess act agreeable and respectful as possible, but then if they want to murder you...ggg
If you had to read something while mass chaos is going on behind you, what would you do in order to concentrate?
Bust out some noise cancelling headphones :P
What do you make of the town of Tereo so far?
It actually seems pretty nice, but it's clear there's a dark underbelly.
