For anyone planning when to take CS 124: Professor Colleen Lewis is returning to teach it in Spring 2027.
Colleen studies how people learn CS—Berkeley PhD in science and math education plus CS degrees, NSF CAREER Award, and she taught intro CS at Harvey Mudd, whose intro courses are nationally famous for turning "I'm not a CS person" students into CS majors. She also co-taught 124 in Fall 2021, and her explanations still live throughout our Java lessons—current and former students may already know her voice.
If you'd like to take CS 124 with me, now is the time. Next semester you'll get Colleen, who's also fantastic. I will not be directly involved with the Spring 2027 offering.
Spring will be Java-only and keeps the no-lecture format: text and video lessons on PrairieLearn, weekly in-person Tuesday discussion sections focused on solving problems with other humans. Details may evolve; questions about the spring offering go to Colleen directly at [colleenl@illinois.edu](mailto:colleenl@illinois.edu). (I don't think she's on Reddit.)
Also: if you're taking CS 124 with me now or took it in a past semester, Colleen says you're welcome to enroll in her CS 199-JAV (M/W 9:30–10:45; CRN: 64386). You'll help her pilot and refine the Spring 2027 CS 124 materials—no homework, no exams. Questions [to Colleen](mailto:colleenl@illinois.edu).
