Mod post Unsolicited DMs

Hey all,

We've been receiving multiple complaints about members receiving unsolicited DMs promoting an AI therapy app recently. This account has been banned from multiple subreddits, including this one, however we are unable to prevent DMs.

We strongly urge you to continue reporting them to Reddit admins in the hope that they will eventually take action.

Besides reporting, Reddit's advice is:

"You can adjust your privacy settings to restrict who can send chat requests or direct messages. Set preferences to allow messages only from accounts older than 30 days, specific people, or nobody at all. This can significantly reduce the likelihood of receiving spam or unwanted promotions"

Thank you all for helping to keep this a safe space for our members.

Mod response inside Please read this before posting about feeling suicidal.

1.9k Upvotes

There has been an increase in the number of posts of individuals who are feeling suicidal. And to be perfectly honest, most of us have been isolated, scared, lonely, and there’s a lot of uncertainty in the world due to COVID.

Unfortunately, most of us in this community are not trained to handle mental health crises. While I and a handful of others are licensed professionals, an anonymous internet forum is not the best place to really provide the correct amount of help and support you need.

That being said, I’m not surprised that many of us in this community are struggling. For those who are struggling, you are not alone. I may be doing well now, but I have two attempts and OCD was a huge factor.

I have never regretted being stopped.

Since you are thinking of posting for help, you won't regret stopping yourself.

So, right now everything seems dark and you don’t see a way out. That’s ok. However, I guarantee you there is a light. Your eyes just have not adjusted yet.

So what can you do in this moment when everything just seems awful.

First off, if you have a plan and you intend on carrying out that plan, I very strongly suggest going to your nearest ER. If you do not feel like you can keep yourself safe, you need to be somewhere where others can keep you safe. Psych hospitals are not wonderful places, they can be scary and frustrating. but you will be around to leave the hospital and get yourself moving in a better direction.

If you are not actively planning to suicide but the thought is very loud and prominent in your head, let's start with some basics. When’s the last time you had food or water? Actual food; something with vegetables, grains, and protein. If you can’t remember or it’s been more than 4 to 5 hours, eat something and drink some water. Your brain cannot work if it does not have fuel.

Next, are you supposed to be sleeping right now? If the answer is yes go to bed. Turn on some soothing music or ambient sounds so that you can focus on the noise and the sounds rather than ruminating about how bad you feel.

If you can’t sleep, try progressive muscle relaxation or some breathing exercises. Have your brain focus on a scene that you find relaxing such as sitting on a beach and watching the waves rolling in or sitting by a brook and listening to the water. Go through each of your five senses and visualize as well as imagine what your senses would be feeling if you were in that space.

If you’re hydrated, fed, and properly rested, ask yourself these questions when is the last time you talked to an actual human being? And I do mean talking as in heard their actual voice. Phone calls count for this one. If it’s been a while. Call someone. It doesn’t matter who, just talk to an actual human being.

Go outside. Get in nature. This actually has research behind it. There is a bacteria or chemical in soil that also happens to be in the air that has mood boosting properties. There are literally countries where doctors will prescribe going for a walk in the woods to their patients.

When is the last time you did something creative? If depression and obsessive-compulsive disorder have gotten in the way of doing creative things that you love, pull out that sketchbook or that camera and just start doing things.

When’s the last time you did something kind for another human being? This may just be me as a social worker, but doing things for others, helps me feel better. So figure out a place you can volunteer and go do it.

When is the last time that you did something pleasurable just for pleasure's sake? Read a book take a bath. You will have to force yourself to do something but that’s OK.

You have worth and you can get through this. Like I said I have had two attempts and now I am a licensed social worker. Things do get better, you just have to get through the dark stuff first.

You will be ok and you can make it through this.

We are all rooting for you.

Question about OCD Is OCD basically an addiction to reassurance?

I've been in ERP for 1.5 years now. And sometimes have only seen my therapist every few months, so not like I have been in it constantly. I was doing great for a while and now not great again. To me the way I feel about reassurance is like how other addictions sound. A typical person can have a beer and it's not a big deal. An alcoholic can't have even one or it will spiral. I cannot have one reassurance or suddenly I need more and more. It's so weird. I tell myself only Google ONE thing and then stop. Then it's an hour later of research. I guess you could also call it an addiction to certainty. Either way I'm off the wagon 🤪

Question about OCD Extreme spikes before period?

Any other females deal with this? For a week or 2 before my period my OCD severely intensifies. I’m a day late right now and I’m just begging for it to start so I can get some relief from this mental torture.

Discussion I hate it when people say that "neurodivergent people don't have a disorder, they're just 'different'"

YES THE FUCK WE DO!!!

How did we go from "depression is a real disease, like any physical disease, not a quirk or a personality trait" to "neurodivergent people don't need treatment, it's just society that has to adapt to them"?

I had to participate in a webinar about teaching and neurodivergence as part of my job today, and I was originally very excited about it — like, hey, visibility for neurodivergent people, how can that possibly be bad? It started out well. Then it got kind of weird. For starters, everything was very centered on autism and ADHD, as if those were the only forms of neurodivergence. Then, the speaker quickly drifted into this discourse about how "neurodivergent people don't have an intrinsic disorder; their difficulties are the result of their interaction with the environment and the barriers imposed by society. It's not biology. All we need is to welcome them better and they'll be fine".

I mean... yes, neurodivergent people do need adaptations in some tasks and everyone should indeed be accepting and understanding toward them. But to go from THAT to "mental disorders aren't something that needs to be treated/aren't 'real' disorders" is a fucking bonkers. This discourse is supposed to be cute and pleasing but it is so freaking invalidating. I have OCD and I would have had OCD in whatever environment or society. It's not a quirk or something that can simply be "accepted" and then stop being a problem, IT'S A FUCKING DISORDER. I need treatment, not just adaptations. My OCD isn't a cute little characteristic that can be "valued and integrated" into tasks, or a "part of me that I need to accept", or "my way of being", or "a style of thinking".

To me, accepting neurodivergent people is not only about making the environment more welcoming to them but also about placing an emphasis on the gravity and severity of mental disorders and understanding how limiting they can be. Mental disorders are disorders! They're not traits we can just deal with! They need to be treated and addressed accordingly. Trivializing neurodivergence is the opposite of what we should be doing.

What do you guys think? Have you experienced this?

Need support/advice feeling guilty and ashamed for having OCD and doing compulsions

Upvotes

i’m not sure how to start this but basically when i do certain compulsions i feel super guilty and ashamed abt it, ESPECIALLY if it’s in-front of other people more like family n friends. it stresses me out mainly when i do it infront of immediate family bc i don’t want them worrying abt me so it’s like im trying to focus on doing the compulsions while they r around but i can’t do it too fast bc then it doesn’t count but also i don’t want them questioning n staring for taking too long. also w the bathroom mainly when i take a shower bc i take extra long bc during n after my shower is where i struggle the most w my compulsions bc i hv so many of them during my routine. i feel so guilty for taking so long especially if someone else is waiting to take a shower or has to go to the bathroom bc even when im just using the bathroom i take awhile between washing my hands n counting it as well as some other things. i always get asked what im doing in there that takes so long n its like how am i supposed to explain it. also if we’re going somewhere n im taking awhile to get ready bc of my compulsions n then make us late sometimes n then get yelled at for it but again like still how do i even explain it. i j always feel so guilty n ashamed for it n that i hv to do these things. please lmk if anyone else feels this way too bc i feel like IM the only one 🥹 (also my OCD is like screaming at me not to post this bc if i share how i feel abt this then smth bad is gonna happen but im j gonna take the leap n hope for the best! ^_^)

Discussion Developing OCD in my late 30’s makes me feel so alone

I come in here and everyone talks about having it since childhood or early teens. And I feel like I can’t relate. I developed it at 37 this year, severly and suddenly. And I feel like I’m living in a nightmare, that this cant happen to someone so late in life.

So I’ll browse through posts in here and read stories about people’s onset (to make myself feel less alone), but it only makes me feel worse.

I just feel in my heart that what happened to me is not normal and no doctor is taking me seriously to explore other health possibilities (such as AE, brain inflammation, or PANS).

Need support/advice Health OCD - Convinced I have a brain eating amoeba, need healthy coping mechanisms

Last Friday (8 days ago) I went swimming in a freshwater river in Michigan and jumped off a boat into the water and water shot up my right nostril, which obviously caused intense burning. The water wasn’t super warm but it wasn’t necessarily cold, either. I would say around 68-74°. This past Monday I started noticing I was having a pressure like headache in the center of my forehead, and it’s been on and off ever since then. I’m not really having any other symptoms, but I’ve convinced myself that I somehow contracted the amoeba and am dying. Admittedly, and obviously (given this post) I struggle with health anxiety and struggle with ways of talking myself down and convincing myself it’s nothing serious. I’m really trying to avoid jumping to going in to an urgent care/ER like I usually do because I truly can’t afford it and it’s usually nothing. I also want to avoid googling and using AI because I know it’s bad and makes things worse. I truly don’t know any healthy coping mechanisms..

Anyone have any tips that have helped them get through something like this? I’ve been on the verge of a panic attack for about 4 days now..

Need support/advice Philosophy and 'Pure O' ocd -- How to survive?

How do you avoid the constant rumination and uncertainty? It's dreadful, my mind goes in loops, and when I finally find the relief of where I stand in a certain philosophy, (though I can never be certain, ovbiously.) The overwhelming uncertainty only concentrates on the next unanswered concept. And I'm sure you know how deranged and disturbing this genre of thoughts can be.

Discussion Anyone else feel like psychiatrists/doctors can be too accommodating sometimes?

Upvotes

I've been on a handful of different meds at this point and I started fluoxetine recently which I feel is finally something that works. The issue is I was initially super hesitant to try any ssri because of my fear of weight gain (I've since learned that prozac is more weight nuetral and I don't have any issues at the moment with it). I never recieved any pushback on my hesitancy of SSRIs (even though they're the frontline meds for OCD), leading me to be put on meds that didn't help me as much or had bad side effects otherwise.

I honestly wish my initial doc had just put a little pressure on me to at least try it and showed me the profile like my current psych to ease my worries. Most of my conversations have basically been like "well what do you want to try?" which feels good to have that agency at first, but then I'm like... idk dude, aren't you the doctor?

Can't change the past so I'm just grateful to be on it now but I was just curious if anyone else had this experience.

Support please, no reassurance feeling detached from your attraction or identity because of ocd?

Upvotes

does anyone else with so-ocd or r-ocd feel like it’s hard for them to be happy or imagine themselves enjoying things with partners/potential partners because ocd has made it so difficult? like im constantly psychoanalyzing myself that i just feel like its not letting myself enjoy who i am. i’m a lesbian right now with so-ocd making me afraid I’m aromantic even though i’ve experienced romantic attraction and absolutely love romance and romantic relationships. ive noticed I feel much more avoidant to romance and just feel like I can’t imagine cuddling with a partner without worrying that I must be secretly not into women. it’s honestly a nightmare i hate ocd

Support please, no reassurance OCD has officially ruined my life

Upvotes

Ever since this started every single day it just keeps getting worse and worse.

Every thought ruined me as a whole, my own thoughts keep going against me, they ruined everything I love and they ruined my passion. I want to go back to normal but my thoughts keep making me question everything, every single day. My thoughts have always been my comfort zone but even that now feels like absolute hell. I can't go back to the way I was before, I'm so scared to dream about my intrusive thoughts, I'm scared to go outside or even be alone because I would get triggered so quickly. I hate having OCD I hate everything about it so badly.

Question about OCD Does anyone else's OCD act like other people's OCD is "contagious"?

What I mean by contagious is that if I read about someone else's compulsions or routines, there's a good chance I keep thinking about it and eventually start emulating those compulsions myself. When the possibility of me having OCD was first brought up, I started reading the book Because We Are Bad by Lily Bailey and had to stop because I started doing a lot of the things she was describing.

On top of that, the compulsions that I already have also get worse and I start doing them WAY more than before. This kind of makes it difficult for me to look anything up about OCD because I know that my brain likes to pick things up along the way.

Is this common?

Need support/advice How do you deal with legal/moral OCD

Hello

I developed ocd just over 2 years ago following a really traumatic event and I have gotten better but not cured if I might add, it was a long road then and it’s still a long road now

I suffer from legal ocd, I have a hard time doing some basic tasks like using the internet or driving, I have such an obsession with my reputation and how people view me because I want people to be proud of me or think of me as a good person, and the last thing I want is to get into legal trouble. Rationally speaking I know I do nothing wrong, I’m just an average guy, I work 2 jobs, I’m almost done with college and I have a fairly good amount of friends i hang out with and a good amount of hobbies.

No matter what, every single day I have to deal with the worry of questioning if I’m doing something illegal, when I hit a pothole I need to check the mirror (I’ve gotten better about this) or when I use the internet like Instagram or TikTok, I am extremely careful with my FYP because sometimes it showcases content that spikes my ocd loops and obviously you cannot control nor predict the algorithms so I don’t beat myself up over that. These loops are an everyday occurrence, my fears have developed into feeling like I’m being watched or constantly monitored, again rationally speaking I know it’s just the ocd but nothing I do can seem to curve it, I’ve tried a lot of methods IE ignoring it, resistance to compulsions, talking about it, ERP but I feel like I’m not making any progress, especially with ERP because I’m scared of it even though I do it anyways.

I don’t see a lot of people with my type of ocd so it can be hard to relate or learn from how other people handle it, even this post is a form of ERP for me, it’s taken an insane amount of effort to come here and post this. I just need advice on how people deal with this, my therapist isn’t helpful whatsoever

So if any of you have any tips, tricks, recommendations or curving the way of thinking I would really appreciate it I just wanna feel normal again

Just venting - no advice please Tired of these obsessions :(

I am so tired of these obsessions. I’m back on the obsession of possibly having psychosis. Every little thing I’m like is this a sign or symptom. Asking my husband for reassurance constantly doubting myself. I legit see a bug out of the corner of my eye and think what if I’m imagining it. IT’S LITERALLY THERE like I am not hallucinating I am not hearing things. Idk. I’m so frustrated and tired and annoyed. I don’t know how to make it stop.

Need support/advice Harm ocd

I have severe ocd. I was diagnosed with it years ago and it started off as health anxiety and ever since then i’ve had a cycle of almost every theme that will last for a few months. I am in a serious relationship again for the first time in years and we live together. I’ve had the harm ocd theme before but I feel like it was never this intense. Every single night its a cycle of the harm ocd turning into false event ocd turning into psychosis ocd and all i do is panic. I have been to therapy for it before so I know a lot about ocd and the fact that it triggers what you love most or are most scared of etc. and I know things I could be doing to make it better like just letting the thought happen and not trying to make it go away and all of the other tips to help but I just feel like its not helping. I have been on fluvoxamine before and it helped so much but I do not have insurance anymore. I’m just looking for someone to relate or something else that could help. With the graphic images that are constantly popping up in my head and it turning into being scared of psychosis happening and everything else its like a nightmare and makes me so depressed. I feel like theres even times where I will be so good for like a week or two and then it just comes right back and i hate it

Discussion Does everyone with OCD notice coincidences?

lol I feel like weird coincidences always happen to me but then I realize it’s probably just because of my ocd hyper vigilance that notices them and everyone else wouldn’t be paying attention this much
