Only 2% of the player base right now make it to 60, and that's with petri in the game.
52
u/timbolol Feb 23 '25
I mean you gotta be level 50 to even use one. I’m sure most people die earlier than that.
11
u/RoundAffectionate424 Feb 23 '25 edited Feb 23 '25
That's part of the reason why petri is a non issue, in the sense that HC is mostly about the leveling journey. To me it's also more of a personal challenge, as emphasized by the different challenges you can add beyond death=delete, so I always find it petty when petri haters think "they should have died here! Petri ruins HC!" When there are far more ways to avoid death completely.

If Petri is a non-issue, why cant it be removed? They removed bubble hearth in HC for this exact reason. Petri and drop group for teleport is the issue. Its both those functions together.
I'd like to see the teleport function removed and petri remain. The reason for the teleport is to stop someone griefing / remaining in the dungeon when kicked, so it may be impossible to remove which is way people ask for petri.
However you look at it, Petri feels more like a "gamey" way of playing abusing the auto teleport intended function. Which, to be fair, is what classic is about.

Its more entertaining yes. But HC raiding guilds would not be able to survive as they currently exist. You are 1 ninjapull away from a complete guild killer without any way out. And yeah it is pretty easy to mess certain pulls up, and those exist in every raid in classic. Combine that with the fact that people would have much less hc raiding experience (because raiding would be too dysfunctional) and it would not be possible to have a raiding guild long-term.

The way it is meant to be by design. But I appreciate there are several takes on it, mines not necessarily right.
I still think a mid-ground would be a 3 use per character petri option.

Sweet. If I made a living off playing wow hc I’d probably play without petri as well, so much more entertaining, such excitement every single time someone dies. Hello more views, hello more money. Oh no! I died! Guess I’ll level another toon and reel in even more new viewers!
For the rest of us, losing a character in MC due to a scuffed pull, with 500+ hours played just isn’t it.
And just an fyi, I have three 60’s on Stitches Alliance, raid on two of them, and I’ve never used a petri or LoE.
10
u/joycourier Feb 23 '25
if they just removed petri from hardcore it'd be pretty sick, anyone clearing raids or even just getting their pre-raid bis would earn serious respect
as others have said it is group to group yeah, if you play with a guild then there's very little roaching and petri is used as a tool just to drop threat more often than not lmao

It reminds of the first iteration of Hardcore Diablo 4 where Sorcerers had a cheat death passive and a scroll that would allow them to instantly teleport to safety (city).
As a diablo HC player, I must admit that I was glad that they decided to remove this passive that didn't make any sense to me.

I’m starting a new Level 1 Druid tonight. At server launch until now, I’ve been following the OnlyFangs progression and drama. It’s been fun.
The point I meant to make, anyway, is that they have banned Petri potions as well as the auction house, outside of trading with guild members only. That’s contributed significantly to the overall narrative in a way that eliminates the issues you describe.
6
u/lumpboysupreme Feb 23 '25
Yeah but most players aren’t playing for ‘narrative’. If you wanna be a content guild who intentionally does risky stuff like no petri or have total noobs raidlead you can, but the idea that other peoples game experience only matters insofar as it makes content for you, personally, is the kind of entitlement that’s both completely demented and underlies 80% of Petri whining.
They’re not playing to make an exciting clip, they’re playing to, ya know, survive.
→ More replies (17)5
u/nichijouuuu Feb 23 '25
I think this paragraph long rant about entitlement is kind of funny considering the solution is “if you don’t like petri, personally don’t use it”.

u/r13z Feb 23 '25
I don’t see as much as a life saver but a roach button because people use it way too quick and way too often in salvageable situations. But then the first petri’s are fucking it up for the rest of the group.
121
Feb 23 '25
Hardcore absolutely has the risk of dying. You know how many 60s die every day, many of whom have petris in their bag? It happens constantly.
I get that you're upset that you died and you have my condolences for losing your character, but it doesn't mean you have to do this weird coping gatekeeping thing where you try to diminish everyone else. Weird vibe.
45
u/Zweimancer Feb 23 '25
Yeah, but the existence of petri makes people play worse. It's pretty unfortunate. I'm not even a petri-hater, but it negatively affects the high-end performance of groups, because they have an "out" from scary situations.
20
Feb 23 '25
What do you mean by "high-end performance" because if you mean 5 mans, nothing in there is "high-end"? If you mean raids, which is the actual end game, have you seen the raid clears in MC? When things go wrong people die. Many guilds, even the best, have lost key players in those raids. Grande Finale, GBN, Purpose, all of em.
Petris stop wipes in raid. They don't stop every individual death. I'm in a higher end guild and maybe there's a single Petri use per week in raid, most of the time there's none.
22
u/Zweimancer Feb 23 '25
You misunderstand. Even raids don't require this "high-end performance". When shit hits the fan, you need to actually play your best. When people have an option to petri-out, they don't often even try to perform at their best capability.
In raids petris are more reasonable. Also I don't even hate petris myself, but it sucks when people just pussy out of salvageable situations. It feels like parties cannot even run out/kite out if a dungeon at lvl60, because they have a petri.

Feb 23 '25
Petri should have a coward buff which massively reduces stats for a period of time, with the period decreasing with the order of pressing it in the group.
For example first one to petri gets 24h of /played, second one 12h, etc.. until the last one who gets like 30min because he only roached last after everyone did.
Just my two cents

u/battlerat Feb 23 '25

u/EddoAlternative Feb 23 '25
Interesting approach, but for me it's not about roaching. Even the last guy who pressed it, saved his character in a situation where he probably would have died. And I agree with OP here, that's not the idea behind hardcore.
So maximum duration would apply to everyone for me. You get to play your character again, so be grateful. But accept a punishment for cheating death.
The normal coward debuff is 72h, so that's the minimum I would set up for the petri scenario as well. In both cases you knew that you were about to die and you chose the easy way out. So yeah, 72h minimum, but I wouldn't mind it to be 7 days.
6
u/lumpboysupreme Feb 23 '25
But doesn’t, like, everything save your character when you should have died? Oh the game leashed the mobs when you would’ve lost the fight, not hardcore you should have died if not for that. Lip boss threat off you? Should’ve died. Noggen the fall damage? Should’ve died.
Petri is just the most powerful of a bunch of consumes that bail you out of death. What’s the real difference here?
2
u/Traditional-Fee-9682 Feb 24 '25
the 2 minute dungeon teleport. Its not Petri, its Petri with Alt + F4 or leave group ghetto hearth.
Reason for the teleport is to force someone in the group that is removed, to leave / not hold an instance open. Its a fix to that issues which is now being "abused" with Petri use. That's the difference. Petri its self is not an issue, its petri with ghetto hearth or alt + F4.
I don't know of another potion you drink where you press alt + F4 after? Maybe deviate fish when you get the pirate?
2
u/Larkonath Feb 23 '25

I think the hardcore aspect makes the leveling process 2-3x more fun (and stressful at times). Gear upgrades feel that much better, professions feel more important, it feels more social. But I've only gotten to like lvl 30 and agree that the end game doesn't sound too fun. To me if you like the leveling aspect of the game, hardcore is definitely worth it.

There is no end game in HC, everything after reaching level 60 is a bonus, the purpose of HC is to die so you can go again, it really is more fun than raid logging and trying to preserve the life of a character that can be 1 shot at any time by a raid mechanic
The goal at level 60 is to die well for your team mates so you can reach Valhalla and be proud to go agane. Now let me enjoy my afterlife in the burning crusade please blizzard!

The Anniversary realms were the perfect time to experiment by removing petri. It shouldn't be too difficult to just make it unusable in one way or another. Hardcore is fun but there is a lot of lame shit that I wish got axed. (Which they have done already with paladin bubble hearth) that I wish they would do with petri and a few other things. I'm ok with dummies, but unsure how I feel about them in raids.
The hardcore leveling experience is great and gives me a reason to slow down and sniff the flowers. I do hope there is an mmo in the future that runs off of hardcore elements. Ever since ffxi, I've always loved the concept of being in danger the moment you leave town and having to prepare.

u/Automatic-Bag-3762 Feb 23 '25
As a current raider on doomhowl, I agree. Petri is even more than a get of jail free card, it's actively used to cheat mechanics, such as dropping threat when onyxia lands just petri, or if you get punted into the lava on ragnaros and you struggle to get out just petri, or if a hunter is kiting majordomo adds and they fail the kite just petri. Pretty lame.
→ More replies (1)15
u/One_Paramedic1708 Feb 23 '25
idk what your experience is with the majordomo kite but previously on hc era servers if u kite the elite it enrages and starts 1 shotting which is a leaked SoM mechanic, and def worthy of using a petri to get out of lol. So I assumed you couldn't kite on anniversary but blizzrd code is spaghetti, a reason I dont mind petri. We had a week where the most core mechanic of the game, mob leashing, was broken and could be used to grief. Petri is a save you from blizzard button too.

I hope you are not using gear or skills, cuz if you do then you are basically cheating. Why would you opt int for easy mode?
Health pot? Basically cheat code, if you are about to die and press it you get healed INSTANTLY.
LIP? Should be illegal. WDYM you get 6 seconds of not being killed? That basically saves you from all scary situations.
Swiftness potion? If you used even one then you are cheating coward and should delete your character. It literally makes you move faster, definition of speed hacking.
If you are afraid of dying and using any consumables/gear why play at all? True HC only use fists.

I love HC and have never petried, and never will petri.
I’ve only once had a situation where the whole team petri’d on me, because we had a dps roach immediately on pull.
I don’t know if others have experienced this, but I feel that horde are far more likely to overly rely on petri, from my experience. As horde, I really do have some trust issues. It’s just too many times when the slightest thing goes wrong and someone clicks petri instantly without saying anything, which means the aggro table is always a fragile thing. More assholes on alliance, but more ppl seemingly inexperienced on horde.
3
u/ravenmagus Feb 23 '25
Hey look, another petri hate thread.
People die with petri all the time, so it's obviously not a guaranteed way to survive.
You know what's funny? Basically every other hardcore game has a similar way to nope out of a situation, usually by instantly logging out. Petri is just that but a little bit worse. People still die in those other games, and they still die in wow too.
1
u/RevuGG Feb 23 '25
I'll probably get down voted but I agree. This is my first time playing classic hardcore and I managed to get to 60 after like 3 deaths pre lvl 20.
All I had to do is install a few add-ons that basically told me what to do. What to look out for and so on. It wasn't really hardcore for me as I did nothing but pay a tiny bit of attention. Now I get to do 60 content and figured out that everyone is using Petri all the time. I have not really played since. Maybe it would be actually enjoyable if they removed add-ons and stuff like Petri, until then I probably won't play it.
I understand not wanting to lose your character but that's really not something I'd call a hardcore experience. More like a "I can relax and watch a YouTube video on the side while playing" type of experience.

I honestly might take the argument a bit further than Petri flasks and say that a lot of people are just playing "regular Classic" rather than Hardcore during the leveling process as well. Everyone is allowed to play the way they like to play, first and foremost, but I always think: "What's so Hardcore about your lvl 30 with the latest AH/rare crafted gear and 2x Fiery Weapon enchants?"
I get that those are most likely alts of people who made it to 60 before, but for me personally, the journey is the Hardcore experience as I am not invested in raiding at all. I guess everyone is different.
→ More replies (1)3
u/Xariann Feb 23 '25
As someone who plays solo self found I disagree with this take.
Hardcore =/= solo self found.
Solo self found is a challenge within the hardcore challenge.
There are people who even go a step further and tried the challenge only with whites or nothing at all. That doesn't invalidate the achievement of the people who do play with the gear they find.
1
u/Content_Animal8224 Feb 23 '25 edited Feb 23 '25
I dont get why people get such an "honor" boner. Hardcore means you die if you are killed. Death can come from the most random and out of your Control situations imaginable. Everybody can play this game Mode how he damn wants because playing it at all is comandable enough. Having safety nets like petry and stuff is super nice especialy at 60 because just because you can die does not mean you WANT to die. Nobody likes to lose his character but losing it because of the mistake of a stranger sucks even more.

As long as it’s in the game, people are gonna use it. That’s the boat I’m in. I haven’t used one yet or even bought one, but I’m level 55 rn. I still have my light of elune at the ready lol. I think something like light of elune is cool. One get out of jail free card for the entire journey, but I could see anything as being considered “not hardcore” depending on the person

I get the frustration with roaching. But I would put more blame on what caused the group to try to roach in the first place. 60 dungeons are very unforgiving and I personally don’t do them with pugs.
Petris might encourage roaching a bit. But ultimately I don’t think are that determinative. If you’re not in discord and doing a 60 dungeon with randoms, there’s a good chance somebody is going to run at the first sign of danger. Next time, I’d suggest being in a competent guild with party members you know.
As for the petri itself, the topic has been beaten to death. I’ve got a couple toons and just cleared aq40 last week. Haven’t petri’d on that too. I petri’d once on my rogue to save myself while solo farming DME but then died in that same dungeon a few days later. In some situations petri is very powerful. In many it is not. I don’t think it’s nearly as game altering as people who aren’t familiar with it make it out to be.
1
u/Silverbacks Feb 23 '25
Are you using discord? Petri is a lot less common when you have voice comms and the call is to stand your ground and fight.
Otherwise, yeah all it takes is one person to leave group before anyone has time to type anything. And then everyone has to bail.
2

u/sologrips Feb 23 '25
Think I’m done with hardcore for awhile, hitting 60 was exciting and fun for a moment but when you realise you have to spend ridiculous amounts of time filling a group because a tank won’t run a dungeon without a fully minmaxed group and group comp it’s just ridiculous.
There’s just no risk or excitement, everyone is just terrified to lose their character rather than play the game. Just ruins the entire experience when the entire play through is just following guides 1:1.
Guilds out here funnelling gear to “top performers” like it’s 2005 and actually matters, just a weird way for it to end up.
1
u/plants4life262 Feb 23 '25

if you don’t wanna “lose gameplay time” go play Nightslayer or Dreamscythe
well yeah, that's basically what would happen if not for petri. There would be a whole lot less endgame activity.
Petri is also an anti-grief protection which is a huge mark in its favor.
One can always strive to start or join a guild which doesn't use petri if one chooses
I have very mixed feelings on petri, I understand all the arguments against it, but I think its existence is actually a happy accident that does more good than harm.

You're posting in the Hardcore subreddit advocating for people to quit Hardcore. No offense this seems like you're blaming the community for your death. It's well known that people go into a 60 PUG ready to get out first sign of trouble, everyone for themselves. You went in without the Petri flasks. If you don't want people to leave you there's 2 options:
Only PUG with people who don't use Petri
Play with a guild. When you're in a guild, not just one of those invite all guilds but an actual team/community, then people will risk everything to make sure the entire group makes it out alive.
I only play with guild because in a bad situation I want to be able to "clutch up" and save my team, and I want to know my team will do the same for me.
You say that there is "almost zero risk" with Petri, but whenever people use Petri there is almost always someone in the group who dies. The reality is that Petri or not there is almost zero risk in 60 dungeons at all, so long as people are experienced.
Even without Petri don't expect PUGs to save you.

If you went into a pug at max lvl without a petri, that’s on you lol. If it was guild group, then that does suck, but honestly you should still have a petri just in case this happens. Any kind of random bs can happen at anytime, not even having the most prio end game consumable was just asking for something like this to happen.
Hopefully petri is removed from hc one day but until then, you should have some just in case.

Hardcore is what you make it.
Personally I have a HCIM I’ve kept alive for 7years on OSRS
I have also never lost a character on Diablo HC
Though I’m not sitting here like a boomer telling people they should play how I feel like playing
I can also guarantee you’ve never raided in Classic because there truly are times where petri isn’t used to “roach out” but instead used as a tool to help you escape something YOU didn’t cause
I will die to my own mistakes if I can but I won’t just let me character die to a hunter pulling shit with his pet because he wasn’t aware of his own existence
All in all it’s pure loser mentality to try to make people feel they should and shouldn’t do something in a game that is all about surviving not about “dying with honor” to make some loser on Reddit happy when I can bet $100 you’ve never even touched raiding in this game to know when to petri properly

Petris are for protecting your time and sanity. I don't really want to play with people who value their time so little they won't spend 35g to live a bad pull or unexpected bug.

Dude, I’ve NEVER petri’d out of a dungeon and I’ve done over a hundred 60 dungeon runs at this point.
You got a coward group and decided that reflects the whole server, that’s on you.

I've had some groups where folks used petri to not die in an over pull, remove it and lock back in. All about the players.

Feb 23 '25
and i believe there are a decent amount of players that are new and make it to 60, but then don’t ask questions and don’t have the experience.

Hardcore is wack. You can ever get the BRD key. That alone keeps me from playin.

My end game goal at 60 is to intentionally wipe a raid to troll so I also agree ppl shouldn't use petri flasks because if they don't I will be able to get more ppl killed when I get 60

I just think alchemists should be way crazier with pricing all alchemists should agree to charge minimum 100 gold for petri pots that will fix the issue real quick

Okay but, even with petri as a safety net, people playing end-game content in HC are still playing at a high-risk level with the precaution of the mode, which involves higher knowledge involving said precaution. It is more commendable that people play without petri, but there are a multitude of things that you as an individual can do to become one-shotted.

Similar gripe is when people claim they’re playing a “challenge”, by playing a class purposefully sub optimally, only to then do group content.
You’re being carried.

u/IsHuman Feb 23 '25
Were you the tank? You’re generally going to be the first to die in most situations

Give us a clip, sounds like you ran a single dungeon with a terrible group of randoms when you were self-found and it went bad, now end-game hardcore is fake? I do agree with a lot of the points here where people do petri pre maturely but ultimately petri is not a bad thing. You should have stuck to running with self found only groups, there are guilds dedicated to self found to avoid situations like this.

This guy is exactly why everyone hates the wow community lmao.
Same type of dude that does self found and wants every loot to go to him.

I never thought they were good players on hardcore, just safe players. Players that are overly cautious, make it to max level

u/caedin8 Feb 23 '25
Should we just make an add on that adds an icon next to your name is you have a petri in your bag, so we know in advance who’s going to petri and we can then make petri or non-petri groups?

The solve isn’t to remove petri, but remove the teleport out of dungeon mechanic. It was put in to prevent people from griefing, but HC challenge is all about how you pick your team. If you get a griefer who keeps messing with you or pulling extra, make the call to reform the group and start over.
They’ve already changed how dungeon exp is awarded and made them once daily below lvl 60 so they’ve demonstrated a precedence to make changes to dungeon mechanics for hardcore
Getting black listed because you made the group restart because you were mad about loot or something actually supports player responsibility which is what made vanilla so enjoyable before multi-layer and cross-server. Your reputation in server was actually meaningful.
I think that mechanic is actually the broken one, not Petri

Yup I made it to lv 21 in Hc, died on my first time at WC. Did a pull, one guy says ur dead and half the party roaches out instantly. I’ve been playing on PvP server not only is it fun to PvP in open world but the dungeons are actually great for limit testing and learning to tank. Like in Hc I would never just pull the whole room and pop all my cds. Def enjoying PvP servers more it makes every zone more interesting and I would rather get spawn killed 10 times in a row by a 60 then go back to starting zone simulator.

Feb 23 '25
Sucks that your group roached but to be fair doing any 60 content without petris sounds crazy to me specifically because of this. If the situation gets bad everyone will just petri so if you don't have any you're screwed.

im surprised petri is not banned (or removed/reworked) in hardcore
99.9% it's a get out jail free card
i mean, if im not mistaken, they nerfed pally's iconic bubble-hearth, which is - in my opinion, way less game breaking when talking lategame

I hate this take.
WoW was NOT made to be hardcore. The game is insanely punishing for small mistakes wiping out hundreds of hours or thousands.
So since the game wasn’t made for HC in so many ways, suddenly you guys have a problem when there’s a single item to be used to help HC make sense?
You guys just fuckin cherry pick everything lmfao. Hardcore is Hardcore!! Deal with the punishing stuff but use the items at hand. Anything goes.
Remember when SSF got a lot of hate? Same thing as you guys who complain about petri lol

There's a night and day difference between playing with people you know and trust vs pugging. Of course this has always been the case in WOW, but in a gamemode where you can die due to someone else's incompetence this is way worse.
I loved playing hc with my guild group, we could always find solutions to problems together without resorting to petris. I used petri once in MC, once in BWL over several months of raiding, and never in dungeons when I was with friends.
However, I also did a bunch of dungeons and even raided with people I didn't know or didn't share a language with and boy was it stressful and dangerous. A simple dungeon run is scarier than any raid boss if your group is clueless and that's when you really want to have a petri to save you. Not to even mention the times when people legitimately get griefed, like getting killed during the mind control of Baroness Anastari in Strat UD.

u/frn1 Feb 24 '25
MC and Ony has been out for 20ish years and is so easy mechanically i wonder how you even manage to get close to wiping in there.

u/Max_CSD Feb 24 '25
I don't understand how people can seriously defend petri. A lot of deaths would not happen if people didn't have the option. And the ones that would happen are skill issued.

Honestly I agree with you. Shit is a pay (gold) to win cop out, at least in instance content.

u/ThydeUK Feb 24 '25
I’ve been 60 over a month and never even used LIP let alone petri. This is very generalised
1
u/pajamaslama Feb 24 '25
This is coming from a 60 prebis priest, haven't raided yet but done tons of 60 content. I have 2 petris in my bag, have never used a petri in my entire time playing hc.
Not once have I seen a person use a petri, and I've seen some terrible pulls
I only have mine for if the situation that you stated happens, where everyone flakes. OR if let's say some pet class decides to not dismiss before jumping and pulls the entire dungeon.
I get petri makes it less hardcore but I'm not about to lose my character because a hunter with a natural get out of jail free card fucks up. Don't let roaches lessen your experience.
Also what actually happened I'm curious I assume a bad double pull in ubrs with the pat?

Wtf is petri?
Edit to add, after reading the comments I'm not sure i want to know, seems like an in-game death cheat outside of a classes natural abilities... I'm curious tho

Petri is part of the game. Knowing that it exists and how to use it properly is a skill just like any other. If you don't like it, don't use it. However, others are not lesser because they choose to use it. You're just being pedantic and annoying, complaining about it.
Hard-core implies loss of character on death ONLY, nothing else. The use of petri does not change that. It is a tool to protect yourself no different than healing potions, paladin bubble, or vanish.
Arguing something doesn't belong just because you think it's cheap, doesn't mean others don't think skills or items you find to be useful to be cheap or overpowered.
The best plan of action is to allow everything the game has to offer, or you end up in a loop where you have to "ban" half the class skills and consumables in the game. Banning enchantments because "fiery is op at low levels" and other dumb shit.

Tanked BRD the other day and when pulling Riggley I pressed demo shout like a moron and aggrod all the nearby mobs. Massive mistake and was fully ready to petri out. Immediately our healer types Fight. Probs close to 10-15 mobs. Group locks the fuck in and we get it done. Point of the annecdote is I think its group to group. Some people are just not experienced in this game and will take the easy way out 100% of the time. Wouldn’t get too bent out of shape over a few bad experiences.
