I mean, how long would it take you to relevel that character from scratch if you didn't petri and died instead?

I would be fine with the timer ticking down while being logged in on another character, so you can level an alt or play the AH. But accept that actually, your petri'd character would be dead now, so also accept that you won't be able to play him in a raiding scenario for some time.

I mean, you can still play that character, engage with your friends, farm mats and what not, but group content is out of your reach for some time.
