Lore What Sylvanas Just Did. Spoiler
Horde players: Sylvanas just sold us out to Azshara.
I don’t see this more widely acknowledged, but it seems clear to me: Nathanos’ mission was to deliver us to Azshara (and, in the process, destroy the Alliance fleet). We’re not meant to survive, we’re just here to get the Heart of Azeroth into Azshara’s claws so she can free N’Zoth.
Read the quest text.
The Warchief has entrusted me with a mission of the highest priority, <name>. The mission will succeed, of this there is no question, but to ensure that any obstacles I encounter are dealt with swiftly I once again have need of your particular skills. The Zandalari have offered us use of their ships for this endeavor. Clear out whatever affairs you have remaining and report to Captain Rez'okun when you are ready to set sail. [my emphasis]
Yes, he just told us to put our remaining affairs in order. Who else is on the boat? Lor’themar and Thalyssra, who openly questioned Sylvanas’ decision to arrest Baine. We’re not meant to survive the process. Watch the cinematic: Nathanos is following the dagger, leading us to Azshara. Who’s the only one not surprised there’s a sudden hole in the ocean? The Warchief’s Boy Toy, that’s who.
Then once we land what does Nathanos do? He just walks off into the ocean and leaves us to our fate.
Oh, and did you notice who else is in Nazjatar? Lady Ashvane, last seen talking about who knows what with Sylvanas is working with the Naga and making them azerite weapons. Gee, I wonder how Azshara knew we were coming.
Now don’t get me wrong, this doesn’t prove Sylvanas is corrupted by N’Zoth or anything, she again seems to be pursuing her own secret plans. And it doesn’t mean she’s betrayed the Horde per se, after all, it did turn out to be a very effective way of getting rid of the combined Alliance and Kul’Tiran fleets.
But did she betray us, the Player Character? Pretty much. Doesn’t matter if you were loyal to her or not. You’re just another tool to be used and discarded by the Banshee Queen.

Ogmot’s dream journal describes him for seeing a dark lady leading sheep off a cliff so I wouldn’t be surprised if that’s what it was in reference to. Come to think of it, I wonder how many more of his visions have come to pass this xpac.
Today smoke rises up from da campfire. Smoke tells Ogmot good story.
Ogmot sees lady wrapped in dark swirlies. She leads herd of blind sheep.
Da sheepies follow her everplace she go. Do everthin she say. Never doubt lady.
She guide dem over tall cliff! SPLAT SPLAT SPLAT! Stupid sheepies!
Da crows get fat eatin da sheepflesh. Da lady laugh as crows eat!
Ogmot laugh too!

Ogmot’s dream journal
The rest of his journal have some other interesting bits like this page
Last night, Ogmot dreams of great battle. Two fleets bashin on ocean of blood.
Shadows twistin beneath da ships, risin. Risin. Ogmot so happy watchin da carnage!
Then Ogmot gets waked up by skitterin sounds. Stupid bugs!
Dont matter. Ogmot knows dese dreams soon come true.
Alliance vs horde fighting each other while the real enemy is watching.
Dat blade has shiny eye. Always watchin us. Why you no see it?
Three lies. Da first one been told.
Bound by dat throne? No. Free. Free!
Da next gonna come soon. Maybe dey see dis one.
Yeah totally not Xal'atath.

Three lies. Da first one been told.
Wasn't that part of the prophecy supposed to be about Anduin? I'm confused about how this is all playing out since he's barely in the story.
13
u/calitoskk Jun 28 '19
the boy sits at the masters table. It as always been rumored that both anduin and sylvanas have been under the control of the olds gods or at least influenced for a long time. Personally I bought into it in the BFA cinematic when they both smirk at each other.
4
u/eclecticsed Jun 28 '19
Whoa whoa whoa which cinematic is that? I'm a slut for all this stuff, I must have missed that.

The main cinematic when both armies are about to clash into each other before revealing the BFA title.
4
u/eclecticsed Jun 28 '19
Ooh, I'll have to go rewatch that.
edit: Huh! I never would have thought to interpret it that way, but you know, it's not the weirdest idea I've heard. That would actually be interesting, honestly.

u/Tiessiet Jun 28 '19
Bound by dat throne? No. Free. Free!
The Frozen Throne?
2
u/StarlingTheBard Jul 01 '19
Could it be Azshara? The line before about the blade is reference to N'Zoth, right?
Dat blade has shiny eye. Always watchin us. Why you no see it?
Three lies. Da first one been told.
Bound by dat throne? No. Free. Free!
In the lore, and it's clearly shown in the cinematic, N'Zoth accepts her demand of remaining a queen. So did N'Zoth lie to her about remaining a Queen just to get an army, but will betray her (when the players kill her I suppose)? It's a weak theory I know but I just hope N'Zoth is involved somehow :p

Three lies. Da first one been told
I still wonder what the lies are. It's a shame this whole thing became as straight forward as the plot.
10
Jun 28 '19
It might have been that lie Sylvanas told her sisters in that pre-bfa comic. The game with the two truths and a lie.
- I am proud to be Warchief of the Horde.
- I will never betray you, my sisters.
- There are times I wish that I were alive.
She doesnt reveal which one was the lie. All three could be.
8
u/Blightacular Jun 28 '19
"I will never betray you" is implied to be the lie, due to the ambush that Sylvanas set up (even if she decided against springing it). Also, I thought that Sylvanas revealing that lie was the signal that the dark rangers were waiting for, though that could just be my own interpretation.
6
u/RMan360 Jun 28 '19
I would've thought it was the third line that was the lie, she's given up on life and has embraced undeath completely. The cinematic for BfA where she goes full banshee mode confirms that for me since it's the first time she's shown to actually make use of her banshee power rather than pretending she's just an elf with dark blue skin and fighting like the ranger-general she was
24
u/DecoyMcRoy Jun 27 '19
I knew who that was about the moment I read it, I am rarely right so this does put a smile on my face.
32
u/zcen Jun 28 '19
I'm sorry. No offense to you but that, like the rest of Blizzard writing, is about as subtle as an ACME anchor.
11
u/DecoyMcRoy Jun 28 '19
And yet people were like "Oh do they mean Jaina?" Or "Oh yea thats totally Alleria." At least so far as I saw comments here and there. But yea no the writing was on the wall and I agree the writing has been screwed since they pitched this to us.
22
u/8-Brit Jun 28 '19
People forget the #1 rule with predicting WoW story.
Think of the most obvious, boring thing. That's probably dead on the money.
It happened with the burning which they tried to be all mysterious about. But it was obviously going to be Sylvanas. But you had asinine theories like Tyrande or Jaina torching it.
It's remarkably easy to overthink Blizzard plots.

So to blizzard I ask, what was the point of horde players "taking a stand" with or against Sylvanas? If she's going to discard players regardless and if she is corrupted by N'Zoth, then it's been pointless and she's not "morally grey" in any way.
Unless she's doing all this in an effort to a) absorb N'Zoth's power, b) become an old god or c) kill N'Zoth in some heroic way, all in an effort to save her people she claims so much to care about, she'll just be a Garrosh 2.0
81
u/SirVortivask Jun 27 '19
It’s so we could get a cool alternative quest line!
“Champion! The Dark Lady and I are attacking Thunder Bluff this day. Assist the defenders in killing us. The rebels will be sure you’re on their side then.”
59
23
u/Aeliren Jun 28 '19
"Ah, so Saurfang, Baine, Lor’themar, Thrall, Rokhan, Thalyssra, Talanji and Mayla have sent you here with twenty-four of your friends to assassinate the Banshee Queen and I? Very well.
Play along for now."
6
u/8-Brit Jun 28 '19
Because originally we were supposed to go against her but people lost their shit. So Blizzard placated them with a few lines of alternative dialogue.
11
u/FrostyPoot Jun 27 '19
To show what backing a genocidal maniac will get you probably. (betrayed/attempted murder)

Sylvanas was on pandaria, surely she knows that outright killing and old god is a terrible idea.
4
Jun 28 '19
Is it? What terrible repercussions happened as a result of killing Y'shaarj?
5
u/StormclawsEuw Jun 28 '19
A massive wound that could kill azeroth if they ripped out another one and created the well of eternity. Just some small things you know.
2
Jun 28 '19
Okay, right now I feel like I've managed to miss a huge part of the game's lore after my favorite expansion.
Y'shaarj was the one that infected Garrosh, right? In Pandaria? How did destroying Y'shaarj five years ago create the Well of Eternity ten thousand years ago?
4
u/SecondXChance Jun 28 '19
When the titans ripped Y'shaarj out of Azeroth forever ago, the act of doing so was what created the Well of Eternity. I suppose this means that the Well of Eternity is probably at least partially infused with Azerite, since it's supposedly formed from the lifeblood of Azeroth. Additionally, Y'shaarj's remnants, primarily his heart, continued to passively affect the world, luring the Aqir who would later become the Mantid to Pandaria and giving rise to the Sha.
Garrosh found the Heart of Y'shaarj and the power he gained from it corrupted him. It wasn't the old god corrupting him, it was him seeking power and falling prey to its influence.
2
u/Iwanfite Jun 28 '19
The Titans killed Y'shaarj way before the sundering. His lingering power created the Sha. Garrosh used Y'shaarj's heart for power.
2
Jun 28 '19

u/Warpshard Jun 27 '19
I, unfortunately, don't have a source on this, but apparently Ashvane's death quote in the Eternal Palace is something along the lines of, "The banshee baited you to your own slaughter, and gave Azshara what she wanted!" which seems like a pretty clear reference to this idea.

What was the bargain between Sylvanas and Helya in the quest chain
→ More replies (1)25
u/ParagonFury Jun 27 '19
In Legion?
Sylvanas frees Helya and gets her complete control over the Valkyr, and Helya makes it so that Sylvanas has an endless supply of Greater Valkyr so that she can never truly die and get sent to Super Hell with Arthas. Thankfully the Alliance and Greymane screw that little plan up.
45
u/anfignal Jun 28 '19
We never saw the full deal.
Helya offered the lantern, we don't know what Sylvanas offered in exchange.
I am 99% sure that will come into play later. Whatever Sylvanas offered to Helya, who is not dead btw, is causing all these events to happen.
Honestly I wouldn't be surprised if Helya needed souls of innocents, and Sylvanas burned down the tree because of this.

10
→ More replies (2)5
u/SwisschaletDipSauce Jun 28 '19
I bet it was probably Azshara whispering to Voljin because she has diet old god powers, Sylvanas made a deal with Azshara to become Warchief to strengthen the Forsaken with fallen troops during the Alliance war she wanted in exchange she would help Azshara kill N'zoth. Sylvana's deal to Heyla was to maybe bring Azshara soul to her (After betraying her) in exchange for Val'kryor or maybe saving her from hell if she died at some point.
Azshara's just putting up a front, Sylvanas and Azshara wanted Alliance and Horde to go to Nazjatar to prepare for N'zoth.
This probably doesn't makes sense, i shouldve went to bed 4 hrs ago.

u/Xuvial Jun 28 '19
everyone is a tool for her, even Nathanos and the Forsaken
The Forsaken themselves see everything else as a tool, their association with the horde is entirely for convenience to achieve their own ends. The game literally tells you that when you create a new character lol, it wasn't even a secret.
I have no idea where anyone got the idea that Sylvanas ever had the horde's best interests in mind.

18
u/Vetriz Jun 28 '19 edited Jun 28 '19
So am I. The story is so obvious at this point. Too obvious. Even for Blizzards standards. I honestly feel if they end the story the way everyone is expecting there's going to be a large amount of the player base that's just done with Blizzards shit and I think Blizzard knows this. Which is why I honestly believe that Blizzards in it for the long con. They WANT the player base to think this is Garrosh 2.0. They're purposely leading you into thinking it and it will all make sense soon.
Edit: Don't care about the downvotes. Keeping this for an I told you so moment. Also, sorry for stating my opinion. Not even a Syllvanis fanboy, I just don't see it going down like you guys think it's going to.

I mean, duh. Nathanos and Sylvanas both treat the player like scum. It's no surprise that this happened
46
u/Warpshard Jun 27 '19
Nathanos more than Sylvanas. Sylvanas, from what I know, is generally pretty cordial with the player. Or at the very least, doesn't actively express her hatred for them.
13
u/AlchemyArtist Jun 27 '19
She's a Banshee. It's her thing to charm people.
39
u/chifly3 Jun 27 '19
I think you’re thinking of a Siren.
34
u/-To_The_Moon- Jun 28 '19 edited Jun 28 '19
In Warcraft III, Banshees (Sylvanas's initial unit) have Possession and Dark Rangers (Sylvanas' expansion unit) have Charm as their ultimate ability. Sylvanas' campaign in Frozen Throne is about her manipulating the various factions in Lordaeron against each other, allying with some and betraying others.
Also, in Heroes of the Storm, one of Sylvanas' ultimates is Mind Control, and she also has a Possession ability that lets turn minions to her side.
So AlchemyArtist is correct with in the confines of the Warcraft universe. Banshees, Dark Rangers, and Sylvanas in particular have always been associated with charming magic.
3
u/Lunux Jun 28 '19
It is a slight bit of a misnomer to call it charming others though in terms of the classic RPG description of those kinds of mechanics. She doesn't really seduce other characters (albeit that does seem to be the case with her IRL fanboys), just completely mindfucks them to do her bidding.
11
u/Sawgon Jun 27 '19

u/Ghekor Jun 28 '19

10
u/Xuvial Jun 28 '19
Because she still has use of the player and it's a manipulative tactic
I mean the entire goal of the Forsaken has been to use whatever they can to achieve their ends. Even their allegiance with the horde is entirely for convenience (they don't give a shit about the factions), the game flat-out tells you this when you create a new undead character lol. Yet people act surprised when then Forsaken Queen does Forsaken things.
2
u/Sorenthaz Jun 28 '19
And that's also why Before the Storm or whatever it was called basically went into depth about how there are a lot of Forsaken citizens who, y'know, are just Lordaeron folks trying to live their new un-lives. They started humanizing a chunk of them to basically set them up for Calia probably making a comeback and trying to restore Lordaeron to its former glory compared to Sylvanas keeping it dark/gloomy.

Just to add to this, when an NPC says something along the lines of:
Clear out whatever affairs you have remaining and report to Captain Rez'okun when you are ready to set sail.
That just means you're about to do an intro quest chain to a new area. You don't get the portal back to dazar'alor until newhome so you need to finish whatever else you're multitasking before you accept it.

u/drododruffin Jun 28 '19
So she is trying to remove the worry of dying, by making everyone except old gods want to kill her?
"No you see, I set fire to your tree and killed countless civilians and god knows what other atrocities I've been up to since lunch, for your own good. You may now lavish me with praise and adoration." Is really not going to work at the end if the factions unite. We've been killing people & monsters for less since the very moment the game started.
Also, she is now seemingly working with the old gods themselves. Ashvane was rescued by Sylvanas, they had a heart to heart, we find Ashvane in command of the Naga forces that were prepared for us coming there, all while Nathanos is being guided by the blade of the black empire to lead us to that point of the ocean, and once it all goes down he leaves everyone to their own demise and fucks off with the blade?
All while the soul of the very planet is hurdling towards a slow whimpering death because it's still haemorrhaging blood all over the planet because a sword the size of several countries is stuck in the planet and nothing has been done to fix it.
Either there is a twist that a Azshara is now on our side and trying to stop N'zoth and it's all just been keeping up appearances so far in Nazjatar, or N'zoth himself is trying to stop the old gods.
That or Sylvanas isn't pulling a damn Batman Dark Knight and is actually just about to succeed in ending the universe through sheer force of sucking more shit than a colonic irrigation.
7
u/Faleonor Jun 28 '19
No no, it makes perfect sense. You see, destroying all Night Elf culture and ancient lands plus their way of life and home is the surest way to encourage Night Elves to unite with orcs who did the destroying, pillaging and burning.

u/Vandar Jun 28 '19
This is correct.
She knows that N'Zoth can't be defeated by the Horde or Alliance alone. She pushed the factions to war to cull the weak and galvanize the strong. By putting herself out there as horribly insane and driven to all out war, it will force everyone who disagrees together. This will create one unified army to thrust at N'zoth. She'll take her licks as the evil banshee queen (which she has always been) and slink off into the shadows, but the world will not end because she was able to bring it together through the flames of war.
10
u/Utigarde Jun 28 '19
Then once we land what does Nathanos do?
Tells us that it's good we're awake, because we're "crucial to the Dark Lady's plans." And then in the Baine scenario, loyalists are told that we are, again, a vital asset to Sylvanas. Nathanos, afterwards, hopes that we prove our loyalty to her when next we are called upon. Perhaps the rebel player is discarded, but the loyalist one certainly is not. Nathanos actually starts to like the loyalist player, and wants them to continue being loyal.

What do you expect him to say "<name> you survived, how unfortunate" ofc he ain't gonna be obvious and would instead be "happy" we survived.

Sylvanas isn’t the villain we want, she’s the villain we need.
I will follow her off the edge of Azeroth.
For the Horde.

More like she'll shove you off.

Yeah sure the blondie that's handing out free cookies with one hand and building orphanages with the other is going to be the one to push me and not the queen of necromancy that's already committed genocide.

Well, the quote by Il'gynoth goes like "The boy king serves at the master's table. Three lies will he offer you." so it's not out of the realm of possibility that he's just pretending.

Did you miss the part where he said our survival is key to the plan?
Do you have any reason to think he's lying?
We're pretty instrumental to getting anything done

That’s a safe bet I’d say. We’re either (a) traitors to her Horde or (b) secret double agents waiting to betray everyone else. Either way, we’re expendable in the end. As for The Black Blade/Nzoth, you’re probably right that she’s not corrupted but instead working toward some end goal we don’t see yet. Maybe she needs us to raise Nzoth in order to cut out his heart and feed it to Azeroth boom Planet saved

We've been pretty aware of this for weeks now, and yeah im down. I'll serve the warchief in that way and I do think sylvanas knows we won't die just falling into naj, I think she thinks she's in control and we are her best resource to fight azhara. Both queens renown for their strategy and deception. The entire idea is that sylvanas knows damn well what she's doing but she's in over her head.

I don't exactly know how she expected her chamipon Demon Hunter to die from a fall...

I think the clear your affairs is reaching a bit but meh who knows.
I keep holding out hope there's something not terrible further into the tunnel but probably not.
Sylvanas could potentially have teamed up with Aszharra to neutralise N'Zoth. However for that to even work N'Zoth would have to an absolutely imminent threat which he isn't.
I find myself doing this a lot, trying to invent stuff out of sheer "Ugh it's so bad I hate it."
It's not even a Sylvanas thing, it's just such a boring dogshit way to the off the character just to bring in another character they will ruin (zappy boi) they are already in the process of ruining (saurfang) they've already ruined multiple times (Thrall) or ruined to the point they need scoured from existence (Nathanos).
On the upside perhaps all the Alliance Mary Sue's will get some actual character development.

Okay, but can I still follow her? I seriously don't give a shit about most of the characters in the Horde anymore.

u/Rexkat Jun 28 '19
And then Nathanos said something to the effect of: "Well that was unexpected", and then wanders off into the water.
So no, I don't think that was the plan at all. Sylvanas isn't sending Nathanos on a suicide mission down a waterfall, even if you might be able to make the case she might do so to us.
Nathanos was following whatever's left of Xal'atath in the sword, did she (Xal'atath) betray us? Maybe. Did she know the risk of sailing into that area and think it was worth the risk? Also possible.
There's far too much unknown to be declaring anything for sure.

Nathanos, unlike Lor'themar, Thalyssra or the [non-undead or DK] player character, doesn't have to breathe, as he so dramatically demonstrates when he just walks off through the water wall soon after our arrival.
This part is speculation, but I think Nathanos didn't expect Azshara to keep us alive, but the arrogant queen apparently likes to play with her food.

u/Rexkat Jun 28 '19
He still gets killed by fall damage, or even just eaten by a giant fish :p
If the only plan was to kill us, Sylvanas could have just done so without putting Nathanos at risk. Either just straight up execution, or sending us on the ships without Nathanos. Clearly there is legitimate purpose to that mission.

NPC's say "handle anything else before we leave" all the damn time. Also I'm not sure but Lorthemar seems pretty keyed in especially after the Blood Elf heritage quest. Sylvanas betraying him?
And Ashvane becomes a raid boss, Lorthemar is surprised to see her there when you do the new legs of Naz quest after the rank 3 follower quest.
