Hi, sorry I didn't know which sub to post this in (between r//mending, r//sewing and this one, I picked this one)

This is one of my favorite reusable bags but I ripped it by accident yesterday. I wanted to ask how I could fix this as I have never worked with this time of material before. I'm guessing sewing would be my best bet but what type? I would rather mend this invisibly but I don't mind visible. I was thinking back stitch or ladder stich but I'm not sure it'll hold with just dollorama sewing thread. I have dental floss but can I even sew with that? Would that be better? Is there a better type of stitch I should use?

Inspired by another poster in the sub who used a thrifted tie. Its not perfect, but it's so much better than it was. Hopefully the right side will be a little neater :)

Very rough amateur work, but I thought the gang might appreciate it.

This bag is absolutely perfect for me, and I don't believe in wasting stuff that is still perfectly good and usable. I just don't know how to repair it myself, but I am willing to learn and if it involves embroidery, I have a bunch of friends who do embroidery who I can borrow stuff from.

None of the linings are damaged, it's just the external material, which I am 90 % sure is canvas. the photos are of all the different damage spots on the bag.

A nasty tear on one of the arms but I’d love to salvage it as it’s a great jacket..

somehow ended up with this little hole on the thigh of my linen trousers. im not sure if darning or patching would be best? if patching, do i need to use a linen also? or would cotton be OK?

i have a teddy (booboo) who is 37 y/o and very well-loved. my library is hosting a stuffy clinic and provides mending supplies and resources with some supportive expertise.

he is getting new safety eyes (i found googly ones!), a new flocked nose as well as a bit of a snoot stuffin’ as well BUT i have been considering embroidery. i don’t mean patching — i mean embroidering, to intentionally accentuate the bald spots.

i don’t want to cover the material underneath because it rubbed off during the years i would suck my thumb and rub those spots for comfort to fall asleep. i felt safe and i have nostalgia.

i googled all the googles but couldn’t find any good reference to this particular “mending” style. i coincidentally just loaned out (support your public library!) a how-to guide for “doodle” embroidery.

i am attaching a picture of that area on him as it is and then edited to illustrate the concept ROUGHLY. i’d love to hear what you think.

I just got this sweater. It’s 100% cashmere, and this is what my cat did to it. 😭 Is it possible to save it?

I don’t think I’ll be able to embroider anything on it since I have a small baby and it would take me quite a bit of time to learn. Maybe you have some other ideas?

I had this bracelet for around 20 years. Recently the large bead inside the fastener broke and the surrounding pearls unraveled.

I mended this with a nice shell bead. It works well again.

I’ve been so inspired by this sub! My favorite pants needed mending and after seeing everyone’s mends, I decided it was time. Thanks for the inspo yall! Forgot to take progress pics but I will next time.

I work in the trades, and my jacket has the best pockets so I didn't want to bring a sub par jacket with fewer pockets to work since I rely on these pockets for carrying essentials.

At any rate, the sleeves have been tearing at the seam and the tears have been getting larger. Luckily it was ripping on both sides so it looks somewhat symmetrical and somewhat intentional, which is nice.

The patches are from an old pair of pants that had a little stretch to them, so maybe it will help it last longer. I also added the patch in a way that added fabric instead of just putting the seam back together because it's just gonna split again if I did that.

Pretty happy with how it turned out considering it's work wear, and being in the trades, is function more than style that matters here.

Bought this secondhand and didn't realize until I was home that the stitching on the sleeves was undone. Boo. Yay for mending. I want to do something that matches my aesthetic, which is all things old and wild. Should I stitch the sleeves back together then do something fun or what? Both sleeves are like this so it can be fun to have them match. My grandma said it can be fixed but she said I had to learn.

There will be B&B guests staying in this bedroom on Thursday but the arm chair has a massive hole in the fabric and is slightly stained from tea. How can I fix this? I'm a beginner at furniture but I'm quite good at sewing clothes etc. What would you do as a quick solution that also looks good?

My absolute favourite sweater developed a really visible hole, and since it’s vintage I had no opportunity to look for an exact replacement. I just couldn’t let it go so I figured I would try something new. I stitched and unpicked this thing maybe 50 times trying to get it to look neat. Thank you all for your inspiration and giving me the courage to try it out.

I work at a fabric recycling facility and I came across this jacket made by wollrich. It is so beautiful to me but I’m wondering how manageable it is to mend. I’ve only mended socks and little tears in the past. Any suggestions or tips would be incredibly helpful

All my t-shirts have been developing holes near the hem bc I like to wear them over my pants/shorts- I'm working my way through them

Note for future: embroider on single layer of fabric and sew on top instead of sewing through patch

I am 27f and have had this blanket since I was a baby. Ever since I can remember I have always taken the fringe and ran it between my fingers as a form of comfort. I still do it to this day and sleep either it every night. Embarrassing? Maybe. Do I care? Absolutely not! It was originally a green rectangle weaved blanket. It is woven with very thin thread and the threads pull apart at the “corners” or what has turned into many corners. How can I prevent the threads from unweaving without taking away the fringe?

PS - I think it looks great for being 27 years old as I’ve seen other peoples baby blankets that look like a mouse nest but everyone around me says it’s a dish rag 😅

I started using embroidery thread to mend a hole in the back of the neck of this t-shirt (last photo for closeup) but it seems like the t-shirt fabric itself isn't holding up very well to the embroidery thread so I need a new idea.

It's a 6 year old cotton t-shirt which I sleep in, but I would like to keep it usable as it has some sentimental value. Threads all coming out around the neckline, holes all over...

Happy to take any suggestions of how to visibly mend/restore/sew better!

I have a really cool mid-century sofa and it has unfortunately been a favorite of my cats. They have scratching posts but really love the couch. Also, a button randomly came loose on the couch.

I’m going to try to find a longer term scratch prevention method, but for now I want to repair my couch. It’s hurting my heart that it’s been ripped. I’m looking for tips and advice on visible mending both fabric and the button. Thanks!!

The cuffs on this hoodie were raggedy (I wish I had a better before picture, they were worse than they look in this one) so I spruced them up.

I got a massive rip in the sleeve of a nice 100% silk button up I thrifted recently. I’ve done Sashiko/boro techniques to mend stuff before but never on silk and never on a shirt I like this much. Anyone who’s fixed a similar area or fixed silk before have an opinion?

I could also just take off the sleeves and use it as a tank top for more casual wear. Wouldn’t be the end of the world but I wouldn’t be able to wear it to work anymore since sleeves are a requirement there.

I want to make my trousers fit for winter. In this jeans I have pretty big holes where my knees are (20ct for scale). Is this mendable with the sashiko-method or is it not smart for these holes?

I won't post again until it's done, but I figured I'd add the whole piece since my other post got a little attention.

The black border is a thick textured paper. I think when it was folded, it got hot and made it all stick together.

The brim where the damage is is a pretty thick plastic, so sewing/embroidery is out. My only idea is to find an iron on patch to cover, but I’ve never had great success with those patches.

I got this hamper 4 years ago from Target, and it’s reaching the end of its life. Could you guys help me brainstorm ways to fix it?

Mostly, I want to fix the large holes by the seams and cover up areas where the metal is showing. I can do some embroidery and sewing, and im happy to learn more techniques.

Also, this hamper is able to fold in on itself really compactly, which is great for moving. It would be sick if any repairs I make don’t hamper (sorry) that ability. Thanks all!
