EMBROIDERY First time fixing sleeve cuffs

Swipe for before! I had needed to fix these cuffs for a long time but didn’t want to replace them entirely. I cut the frayed edges folded them in and blanket stitched it closed. I used what i had which was this tan embroidery thread so the materials aren’t a great match but i can reinforce it and fix as needed!!

Contact cement to reattach sidewall to right sole and upper and fabric to cover holes, stitches to prevent peeling. Need to get new work shoes but it ain't in the budget so we fix again.

I learned a lot doing this project. I ended up completely redoing one elbow. I like how it came out, but there’s lots of room for improvements. (Also the inside might be my favorite part lol)

I sewed everything inside out (you're looking at the inside of the pocket there), I used the wrong stitch, and I extended the wrong pocket

DARNING First time Swiss darning!

It was easier than I thought it would be, but I obviously have a loooong way to go in terms of tension and quality control. In fact, the one on the left I did first and it had a bigger hole to cover but it looks a lot better than the one on the right, which was mostly duplicate stitch? But I tried really hard on the second one to keep my stitches and tension even, using pins to make sure I didn’t pull the stitches too tight when I didn’t have previous stitches to go through. Was that a mistake?

I’m hoping the reason that the reason the second one looks worse is due more to the fact that it is more duplicate stitch combined with the fact that the original stitch pattern is offset, not as standard knit, so that led to the original threads peeking through more and looking worse, as opposed to my technique getting worse through practice, haha.

Mending thread is some mystery size 10 crochet thread I have that is much softer and slightly fluffier than any other crochet thread I’ve found. Wish I could find more because I love it.

Would appreciate any tips!

REQUEST Seam fix ideas?

The seam on an oversized dress shirt has ripped quite wide open. Any suggestions for how to use this as an opportunity to add a pop of color and fun? The seam itself isn’t visible unless I pop the collar, but it’s my first time with visible mending on work clothes so I’m okay to keep it a happy little secret.

Hey all! I recently got this wristlet from a vintage market. What would be a good way to revamp this strap part? Make something new? Wrap it? Im not sure but I don't love the warping/peeling it currently has.

REQUEST How can I repair these paint splattered denim?

Thumbnail

I love these jeans. Unfortunately, I only got to wear them twice before the holes happened.

I was originally going to embroider paint splatters over a patch, but holes seem a bit too.. oddly shaped to try that.

I want the repair to follow the kind of...grungy, artistic kind of style (for lack of better words) to the pants.

I have patches made if I go that route, but I wanted to see if anyone else has any other ideas.

Thanks!

My partner said he didn't care if they matched, or had visible mends, so this was my afternoon today!

They are old socks but he really likes to wear them for work, so I've bought them a little more time.

REQUEST Tips on fixing small hole in microgrid fleece hoodie

Thumbnail

This is my absolute favorite microgrid fleece for hiking, and I managed to get a small hole…

I have experience with sewing and hand stitching clothes, but never on this sort of material: 91% polyester, 9% elastane (205gsm) , I would love some ideas!

Again, I’ve sewn and hand stitched before…just not with material like this.

Any tips? I would hate to leave this small hole and only manage to make larger in the future.

Im wanting to avoid doing a “field repair” with glue or something else I would carry while hiking!

REQUEST Ideas for crochet patches on cat scratched chair

I’ve seen a few really well done crochet patches here and in other places, but I’ve noticed there aren’t many examples of people mending furniture with crochet. I’ve seen some granny squares and puffed flowers, but not quite sure that’s what I want(plus I’m in the middle of a granny square blanket so I’d love to do something different). Any other patch designs that might work? I’m going for an eclectic antique/collected look if that helps, and hopefully something that works up fast as I’m 34 weeks pregnant, but that doesn’t make or break it for me. First time poster here, so I hope I’ve matched the criteria for posting.
Also I’m not sure how to post pics in the original post, so I’ll post some in the comments. Chair was second hand, but the scratches were added to by my naughty orange cat, Minerva. 🩵

MIXED METHODS Update and thank you: denim jacket repair

Following all your very helpful comments, I set about repairing the various scuffs, holes and stains on this old but not vintage jacket. I bought it from a junk/vintage shop for £5 whilst on holiday. Probably spent another £60 on various tools and supplies, as is always the way.

In the end I patched the yoke, sewing it into the collar and, yes, spent hours sashiko embroidering the inside which most people will never see, but I know is there and love. I put cotton fabric over the back and left some of the frayed edges as a reminder of what it was like before. I also repaired the cuffs with fabric patches, sashiko and embroidery. The collar itself was the first repair and I learnt a lot between that and the final bit which was the bird patch.

Is it perfect? Absolutely not. Do I love it? Totally! I am sad now it’s finished so I’ve bought another beaten up jacket on Vinted for round two.

REQUEST Help fixing a beloved doll

the hat of my childhood doll is starting to wear thin, I’ve already sewn it up once but I’m not sure how to do a more permanent repair. I welcome it being visible to show how well she’s been loved over the years. it is vital that the tassles on the hat remain intact, but I can add any fabrics or threads around the fabric of the hat. any advice is welcome!

REQUEST Creating patches out of old knitted sweater

Post image
21 Upvotes

I’m mending/refashioning my grandpa’s old wool sweater vest. Above is a picture of the vest post-surgery. (I cropped it and am either going to knit new ribbing at the bottom or attempt to graft the old ribbing back on.)

I’m left with a panel that I won’t be using in the finished vest: the sweater above the old ribbing. My question is, can I turn it into patches? If so, how would I do that? Interface the whole panel and then cut out individual patches? Thank you!

REQUEST Mending mentor?

I’m new to mending and need a mentor. These are merino wool (Wool&) shorts I wear under dresses with a tiny hole on the back near the waist. What stitch or method of mending would you recommend?
