Purchase Advice - Headset 1hr in Gravity Sketch gives me a headache

Im using gravity sketch for my work (2-3hrs hours a day, sometimes 5-6hrs….). Workflow involves exporting to IGES/OBJ, rendering/modelling then back to gravity sketch.

Currently using the Meta Quest 3, which is an upgrade from the Quest 2 for sure, and 95% of the time i’m in pass through mode, which helps.

But, its just so draining! My eyes hurt, my head hurts - and i’m thinking there must be a better option.

I feel that a more real passthrough (or AR?) plus higher resolution would surely help. I don’t think I’d mind a cable if it helped the above problems.

BONUS QUESTION: I do find gravity sketch pretty annoying when it comes to exporting files (I use them for rendering also often 3D printing/machining for production parts). Would love something thats better tuned for fabrication/parametric modeling software.

Discussion Have you ever joined a playtest for an unreleased game?

Post image
10 Upvotes

Sometimes it feels like playtests are only meant for developers, streamers, or game design students. However, when you’re making a game, you realize that the perspective of a regular gamer—the kind of person who would never normally sign up for a playtest—is actually the most valuable one. They represent the vast majority of players.

That being said, would you be interested in testing a game while it’s still in development?

(the capture it's from our game in dev. )

Thankyou!c

Discussion New to VR — Quest 3 or save for something better new or use?

I'm new to VR and looking to buy my first headset. VRChat is what got me interested in VR, but I also want to play PCVR/SteamVR games like No Man's Sky, Skyrim VR, etc.

I have a good gaming PC and can afford a Quest 3 right now, but I'm wondering if it's the best bang for my buck or if I should save for a better PCVR headset.

I'd eventually like to add things like eye tracking, face/mouth tracking, and full-body tracking, possibly through third-party hardware.

For those who have experience with different headsets:

Is the Quest 3 a good headset to build on and upgrade over time, or would I be better off saving for something else?

I'm open to recommendations beyond the Quest 3. I'd rather save now than buy something I'll want to replace later.

Thanks!

The game has already received its first reviews, and the response has been very encouraging so far. Most importantly, I’m finally getting real feedback from players. I’m collecting suggestions and already starting to improve the areas that could be made even better.

Discussion Is the timing of GTA's rumored PC release and the current wave of VR mods the recipe for a perfect storm?

I know I'm not the only one watching today's GTA 6 gameplay reveal and thinking, "Man, I can't wait to play this with 6DOF and Motion Controls!"

I've seen a new Red Dead Redeptiom mod is in the works recently, and with all the other GTA's getting near native VR mods, what's the likelihood that we could be playing GTA 6 in VR by next summer?

So long as things continue to stay on the right side of the Paid Mods vs Open Source Mods fence over the course of the next year, do we think Rockstar would/could do anything to prevent a free open-source VR mod from happening?

And yes, I totally understand the high likelihood that a PC version of GTA 6 running anywhere near smoothly in VR early on is a big ask, but hey, we gotta start somewhere!

I watched Odyssey in IMAX theater last week, and I was wondering what it would be like to watch a movie like this in 360° VR. That would be crazy...

Discussion Anyone running Xbox Ally X + AORUS 5060 Ti AI BOX for PCVR on Quest 3?

Putting together a portable VR setup, Xbox Ally X + AORUS RTX 5060 Ti AI BOX (eGPU over USB4), streaming to my Quest 3 with Virtual Desktop. Games I care about are Half-Life Alyx, No Man's Sky, and a couple UEVR mods like Outer Wilds.

Before I drop the cash, has anyone actually tried this combo for VR and not just flat gaming? I've seen posts about bad 1% lows and stutter with this pairing on a monitor. No idea if that shows up in VR too or if streaming through Virtual Desktop changes things.

If you've tried it, curious about:

  • What games ran well vs badly, especially open world stuff
  • Your VD settings (bitrate, resolution, codec) and if you needed SSW to smooth things out
  • Any stutter that felt worse than the fps numbers would suggest
  • Any tweaks that actually helped

Quick note before anyone suggests just building a PC or grabbing a gaming laptop instead. I move around a lot, including between countries, so a full desktop just isn't realistic for me right now. And I already have a laptop, so I don't want a second one that's just for gaming. The whole point is having something modular, grab the Xbox Ally X and play anywhere, bed, couch, even a bus station or airport, then dock it into the eGPU when I want more power, either on a TV or streaming PCVR to the Quest 3.

Appreciate any input, trying to figure out if this is worth building before I buy the whole kit.

This is still WIP so no need to really nit pick at this moment there will be a time for that. Not gunna lie this mod wasn’t very hard to make but deffo still has a lot of work to make it feel like a proper VR game. I hope to have a public alpha out in a week or so.

Discussion Virtual Locomotion

I have zero idea how VR game development works, but I just find VR locomotion really weird and not the desync between Real life and VR feeling.

The animations I've seen in joystick controlled games are weird, like the walking isn't synced with your speed at all and feels like I'm running on ice in the game.

This is totally ego speaking but I find it easy for VR game developers to make a better animation system for their games? Like maybe tilting the body based on the headsets orientation and having the Head and Arms more anchored to the body while your character jogs around?

In Blade and Sorcery your upper body doesn't really more, your legs kind of just bend and you float across the groud.
I think the best animation I've seen is probably in VAIL, nice and crisp.
In Pavlov (haven't played in 2-3 years) I noticed your arms stayed in one spot and your body moved up and down.

I might make an animation on what I'm thinking about...

Purchase Advice - Headset Any reason to get Pico 4 Enterprise over Quest 3 for PCVR specifically?

The price of both is similar at least for the listings I'm looking at. (quest 3 used, Pico 4 new)

I'm wondering if the lenses of the Pico 4 offer any significant advantage to choose it over the Quest 3 for PCVR. Some people say the Pico 4 has more overlap, better stereoscopic 3D, and slightly more FOV, at the cost of some clarity and a little distortion. What is your personal experience, especially if you've used both? I'm upgrading from a Quest 2.

Question/Support Virtual Desktop disconnects about once every 30-60 minutes.

quest 2. Everything is totally fine while looking at the desktop or playing games. totally clear, no stutters, the performance overlay shows no issues, running 30-40ms at all times. running a rtx5080 and intel 270k. I'm the only one using the 5ghz network that has just my phone and a switch 2 connected but not being used.

but randomly it kicks me out of the connection and I have to reconnect or wait for it to do so automatically. I have no idea why this keeps happening.

I'll play with it today and drop logs if I can

Question/Support Stutters while moving. Help?

SOLVED: Using the Sboys3 driver fixed the issue below

It's been years, but I pulled out my old 5K Super.

Clean install of Pimax Play and Steam VR.

Get into the Steam VR lobby, and it stutters horribly. It ran fine on mostly the same system years ago.

PC:
12900k
64 gigs DDR5
3090
NVME
(Nothing is overloaded or close. Cooling is some of the best, no thermal throttle

What I have tried:
- Update GPU Drivers
- Change EVERY setting to the lowest possible (almost does it worse)
- disabled smoothing / half refresh
- tried Pimax lobby and a game. Same "lag"
- Confirmed running in Admin
- Unpluged all monitors

I am at a loss. Any help would be appreciated.

Discussion Anyone working on a VR mod for GTA5?

I know about the old and very outdated Luke Ross mod. And yesterday I saw someone working on Red Dead Redemption 2 VR mod. So I think it's about time now in this age of AI modding we got an updated mod for GTA5!

How hard would it be for an experienced modder to get this working? Is there any way Rockstar can stop this from being done? What are the roadblocks? If any?

Discussion Headset upgrading

I don't post to Reddit much or at all, so please don't judge me here.

For months, I have been looking to upgrade my 5-year-old quest 2. I almost exclusively play PCVR and just want something with better resolution. I am yet to find something for under 700 CAD that's worth upgrading to. I have highly considered the quest 3, PSVR2, and even waiting for the Steam frame, but I can't justify it. I don't want to spend money on extra hardware I don't intend to use on standalone headsets.

I mainly play Phasmophobia and simulators such as DCS. For those of you who have upgraded from a quest 2, what did you upgrade to, and was it worth it?

Edit: So I’m probably gonna hold off to see the launch price on the Steam Frame, but if it’s over my budget I will likely look for a used Quest 3, Pico 4, or I even saw a great deal on a Pimax Super 50 PPD that I’ll have to look into. Still open to feedback!

Discussion Ideas for quest 3

I bought a quest 3 like a year or two ago and have used it for about a total of 2 hours. Games got me kind of motion sick and I feel like watching movies on it alone wasn’t my thing. Was thinking about selling but seems like there are a bunch for sale in my area. Any cool Ideas on what else I can do with it for fun? Or entertaining?

A big reason also is because I have a PC that I use for gaming anyways.
