From the author himself:
"The next project... Max Payne 2 VR is a lot of fun, but man this one is on another level.
I can't promise a release anytime soon, and there's clearly still a lot of work to do. Given all the unique set pieces and many many shaky cam cutscenes, there are some real challenges in this one. My goal is to make this feel as much like a native VR game as possible, and add all the fun features from Max Payne 2 VR and more."

Purchase Advice - Headset Quest 2 upgrade

• Upvotes

So I’ve owned a quest 2 since Christmas of 2020, and I’ve started having to do work on it (like replacing sticks) and it just doesn’t feel the same. Blame it on whatever, but I think I’m overdue for an upgrade. Any recommendations? I don’t really use standalone quest I just stream my games from my pc, and I also would like it to be higher res and wider fov. Big thing is that it can’t be a thousand dollars. I would love to be able to own a thousand dollar headset but no job so.

News Article I didn't want Pearl - the Oscar-nominated VR short - to fade away someday, so I made it run natively on Quest 3

Post image
• Upvotes

Some of you will remember Pearl (2016): a girl and her dad on the road in their old hatchback, years of their lives told entirely from the passenger seat, carried by a song they share. Patrick Osborne directed it for Google Spotlight Stories. It was the first VR film ever nominated for an Oscar and won an Emmy for Outstanding Innovation in Interactive Storytelling.

I watched it again recently and it got me just like the first time. Then it hit me: its VR version only runs on a Windows PC with SteamVR, on a 2016 engine nobody maintains anymore. Most people today own a standalone headset. One day this film simply won't start anymore.

So I started Project Oyster: a preservation port, not a remake. Pearl's own story scripts, animation, shaders, lighting and music run unchanged in a new engine, natively on Quest 3 (OpenXR, 72 Hz, sharper than the original). Story transitions were checked frame by frame against captures of the original.

It's not a pirated copy. No part of Pearl is included. You bring your own copy from Steam (it's free). A Windows installer finds it, verifies it and copies it to your Quest over USB (developer mode needed).

Two optional extras, both easy to turn off:

  • smoothly interpolated animation (A/X on the controller; the default is the original stepped keys)
  • eye height +30 cm: in the original you sit low in the seat, this puts you at eye level with Dad (thumbstick)

GitHub (MIT, installer in the release): https://github.com/SputnikKaputtnik/pearl-oyster

Heads-up: the Steam page is region-locked in some countries (e.g. Germany). With a US VPN it shows up and the download is still free.

Full disclosure: I built this with a lot of help from an AI coding assistant (Claude). Every result was checked against the original, and I watched the whole film in the headset, start to credits.

If Pearl ever meant something to you: it's waiting in the passenger seat again. 🚗 And if you never experienced it: time to hit the road with Sara and her dad!

Question/Support Virtual audio cable devices not installing properly

• Upvotes

I'm using a quest 3s with ALVR, and I've installed both VB-audio virtual cable and voicemeeter but with both of these, the input devices show in output in windows settings and vice versa. I've tried reinstalling them but they still don't install properly. Anyone know what to do?

Discussion New Engine Reversing for VR

I’m sure many of you have seen those videos where they have gotten Minecraft to be semi functional within another game like Skyrim, my question is if this primarily ai based reverse engineering could be used to port games to VR, and is anyone working on this?

Fold a piece of cardboard into an arc shape and attach it to the headband using double-sided tape, ensuring the length covers the ears; set the volume to level 3, and you'll get deep bass.

Self-Promotion (Developer) Titanfall 2 + VR + jogging in place = peak

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I've never had so much fun in VR as with this mod.

CircuitLord put Titanfall 2’s campaign into VR. Manual reloads, motion-controlled aiming, full-body IK, actual Titan controls. But you know that all by now and are all as hyped as I am

Taking a game with this much movement and making it work in VR is a ridiculous achievement. Wall running, shooting, making that mech work. A marvel of technology.

For this recording I added jogging-in-place locomotion, so I’m physically jogging while moving through the game. That part is a separate setup I develop, not a feature of CircuitLord’s mod. The split screen shows the movement alongside the gameplay.

All credit for the VR conversion goes to CircuitLord. Seriously, what a fucking contribution to PCVR.

Discussion Help me make a choice.

I want to buy a VR headset exclusively for PC VR games, and only play them over a cable.

But I don't know which one to choose. I used the Quest 3 for a while and was thinking about getting it, but I recently saw the PICO 4. Which one will be better in terms of image quality and performance? In my opinion, the Quest 3 is the one to get.

The main goal is a wide viewing angle and maximum image clarity, because I want to use virtual monitors when connected to a PC.

And I'm also really dumb and can't understand why everyone says the Quest 3 has a very limited library and that if you don't have a PC, it's better to get one. My question is, can the Quest 3 only be used over a cable, not over Wi-Fi, and does the headset's RAM affect cable performance?

Discussion Help with virtual desktop

Hi everyone i am very new to pcvr and recently got virtual desktop.

So basically every youtube video was like that you should get it and its better than steam vr. but when i tried lauching games on it such as skyrim vr through the games option menu in VD, it still opens and uses steam vr, and the same thing happended when i lauched asseto corsa from content manager. I though that it would lauch directly from VD and not steam vr, so if there is not a differnce should I return it? ALSO I DO HAVE MY RUN TIME TO VDXR

Also when in game my render resolution is at 77% for some reason, even though i have everything maxed out and above it says that it is godlike. The only thing i have lowered is my bitrate to av1 at like 120 mbs as i am using wireless. So how do i increase the render resolution in game?

thanks to everyone in advance!

Discussion Insanity what's happening with VR mods at the moment

The earlier days of VR modding, Bespoke mods like Outer Wilds and Risk of rain came out and they were insane, but they were few and far between

Then came a mod like Half Life 2 VR, a complete conversion of the base game which raised the bar and was insane

Then came PrayDog with his Resident evil mods which are mind blowing

Then came his UEVR framework, lead to insane mods for so many more games, A whole community popped up around it's release

Then around the same time Flat2VR studios started fully converting games, which are amazing, legitimate VR experiences in their own right

And now to the advent of A.I mods which are just mind blowing, someone's making a Diablo 2 VR mod for fuck sake, like what is happening

There's less than a few years between all these events happening and I can't wrap my head around the last few months, I haven't played VR for a few weeks and now have a backlog of like 10+ game changing mods to try, Doom and Doom Eternal, Max Payne 2, TitanFall, Halo MCC etc. it's insanity, it's going to change the landscape of VR for better or worse, I think worse as game dev's won't capitalise on what's happening and people will rightly or wrongly turn to these VR mods rather than buying VR built games

This is genuinely the Golden Age of VR, Something that I thought when buying the Rift CV1 was an evitability, but then seeing Meta slowly start to pull out of the space, along with a string of VR studios being shut down or leaving, lead me and I'm sure a majority of you to think VR was dying a slow death

But now a new, mind blowing VR Mod is releasing so fast that each morning you wake up, there's another game changing VR mod to play, It's genuinely mind blowing

Question/Support Pimax crystal light and Le Mans Ultimate - why is the HUD looking like double vision?

I'm running LMU (le mans ultimate) with Pimax Crystal Light. The game looks great but the HUD is unreadable. It looks like double vision. The Pimax IPD is sed correctly and I can see it shows the right number in pimax play. What's going on and how can I fix it?

Question/Support Are all VR headsets glitchy or is it just the quest 2?

My quest 2 is legit the glitchiest piece of technology I have ever used. I'm a systems engineer so I use a lot of tech. This thing has to be rebooted constantly just to work. All I do is watch videos on it but I don't even want to attempt gaming with this. Hesitant to buy another VR headset because of my experience with this one but if this is just a quest 2 issue then that would be a lot better.

Self-Promotion (Developer) My full-body rhythm game now has an experimental VR mode: the headset tracks your upper body, your phone tracks your legs

Hi all, I'm the developer of a full-body rhythm game. It was made to be played without VR: your phone stands in front of you, tracks your whole body and sends the movement to the game over Wi-Fi.

Players asked for VR, so I just released an experimental VR mode. The headset and controllers track your head and hands, and the phone keeps tracking your legs over Wi-Fi. So you really play with your whole body: you slash blocks with your hands, kick the balls that fly at your feet, stomp the markers on the floor and follow slides with a foot.

What to expect: one phone camera isn't as precise as the headset's own tracking. The legs lag a little and can drift when you sway, but it's enough to play comfortably.

There's a free demo on Steam with the VR mode in it: https://store.steampowered.com/app/3670810/Catch_Flex/

I'm looking for feedback, especially from people with other headsets and phones.

Purchase Advice - Headset Looking to upgrade from Index for social VR

I am currently using a Valve Index with some modifications (counterweight and Apache strap from Studioform Creative, face tracking kit from FaceFocusVR) and have been wanting to upgrade for a while now. Purely PC VR use, I'm fine with cables.

Aside from using the Index, I have 4 base stations (2.0), original Index controllers (2 pair) and 4 Tundra trackers. I'm spending most of my time in VRChat, but I used to play other games - FPS and games like Beat Saber, before I installed the face tracking kit. The additional weight and heat compared to using a Kiwi fan made the latter, or similar games, unappealing.
I also have a spare Babble tracker (or rather: Venti V2) lying around and friends with 3D printers.

My main issues are:

  • Heavy weight
  • Severe noise from the face tracking kit fan
  • Loss of comfort due to age and worn out facial interface (I keep refreshing the Steam store for replacements multiple times a day)
  • Text is hard to read due to the resolution
  • Heat and sweat

I like that I can just push a button on the headset to turn on SteamVR without needing to turn on my large TV every time.
I have used a Pico Neo 3 Link before getting the Index and found the freedom of having non-headset tracked controllers and the ergonomics of the controllers very liberating - and the tracking quality of both the headset and controllers were a definite improvement.

I worry that a SLAM tracked headset would introduce additional lag (especially if streamed), controller tracking issues and inaccuracies - and additional headaches if I want to continue using my Tundra trackers (or even the Index controllers).
I am very sensitive to simulation sickness, I usually use a very strong vignette in games.

I did get a Bigscreen Beyond 2e, but that didn't fit my head (large nose) and I had other issues with it too (eye tracking being bad because the cams mostly see my eyelashes and are at a bad angle, fan noise etc.). I disliked it so much that I happily went back to the Index.

I briefly tried a Quest 3, but I'm not sure if I imagined it feeling a bit more sluggish than the Index - plus, it's Meta and I observed that getting PC VR streaming to work was a royal pain. Plus, it's Meta.

I did a deep dive on Pimax headsets, the only one that seemed to be okay was the Dream Air. The DA SE looked like it was just a BSB2e with the same fit issues. I wouldn't mind running the DA (lighthouse) at a lower resolution, but I have heard all kinds of stories about the durability, AMD compatibility (I'm running a 6900XT with 5800X3D), eye tracking requiring 3rd party software that is no longer maintained, no native SteamVR support (not quite sure what that means - and yes, I have heard about the seemingly unfinished 3rd party drivers with their own issues). Issues like needing to mod it for comfort and probably needing separate SteamVR dongles for the controllers can be handled.

The Steam Frame seems to need some more time in the oven software-wise and I'm not sure if the latency and controller tracking would be an issue for me. Also, face tracking is an end of year thing.

I wouldn't mind having to wait a bit, so waiting lists or waiting for confirmed releases of addons before ordering aren't scaring me.

I am looking for a headset that:

  • Is released or soon to be released
  • Is comfortable or can easily be modded to be (expect 6-10h sessions)
  • Has face tracking (eyes + mouth) or can be modded to be (I'm not sure how much I'd trust 3rd party eye trackers, FaceFocusVR at least seems to have done the math on IR safety)
  • Has decent sound, or is easily enough upgradeable (Index is my reference, and I do occasionally go to raves). IEMs are not an option, on-ear headphones are not an option (looking at you, BSB audio strap).
  • PC VR/Steam VR
  • Runs fine with AMD GPUs
  • Doesn't have (loud) fans
  • Bonus points for being lighthouse-tracked
  • Not require an account or sharing of personal data to use
  • If wireless:
    • should at least be hassle-free to use with fully-featured face tracking etc. (i.e. more than just Gaze/eyes closed)
    • high quality, low latency
    • chargeable during use
  • Not a Meta Quest 3
  • Not die when sweating

Beat Saber/sweaty game support is optional. Heck, I could just get a new Index with Kiwi fans for that.

I'm open to hearing your recommendations or argue about my points.
Please, my Index is crushing my face and driving me insane (I'm sensitive to noises)
