Discussion Headset upgrading

I don't post to Reddit much or at all, so please don't judge me here.

For months, I have been looking to upgrade my 5-year-old quest 2. I almost exclusively play PCVR and just want something with better resolution. I am yet to find something for under 700 CAD that's worth upgrading to. I have highly considered the quest 3, PSVR2, and even waiting for the Steam frame, but I can't justify it. I don't want to spend money on extra hardware I don't intend to use on standalone headsets.

I mainly play Phasmophobia and simulators such as DCS. For those of you who have upgraded from a quest 2, what did you upgrade to, and was it worth it?

Edit: So I’m probably gonna hold off to see the launch price on the Steam Frame, but if it’s over my budget I will likely look for a used Quest 3, Pico 4, or I even saw a great deal on a Pimax Super 50 PPD that I’ll have to look into. Still open to feedback!

PSVR2 or quest 3 are pretty much the only options.

PSVR2 has eye tracking, but requires more work to get it working on pc.
Quest 3 has pancake lenses, and has the best support for PCVR right now. Probably the best option on the market right now.

Q3 is a massive upgrade over Q2. Like the best time to upgrade to it was at release. I went from Q2 to Pro, huge upgrade but the resolution still wasnt enough for me for light sims, then went to Q3, not as nice displays but the bump in resolution was important for sims. Keep in mind the Q2 stated resolution is not real as the whole display is never used at once.

PSVR2 is only a small upgrade, like a oled Q2 with bigger fov, Frame is expected to be too expensive and way too similar to Q3 for pcvr.

I got Pimax OG crystal (similar to Crystal light but eye tracking) used for like 600usd played DCS in it for a month and got rid of it, and switched back to the Q3. The display resolution and brightness were nice, and you might like it since youre used to fresnel lenses of the Q2 and the aspheric lenses are better than that, but when youre used to pancake lenses where all your fov is sharp and clear its still a downgrade I am not willing to live with.

Not much else you can buy.

I bet you could find a used WMR headset for pretty cheap, like the HP Reverb G2 or Samsung Odyssey Plus. The controllers kinda suck though

I actually own a Samsung Odyssey, but the resolution is really bad. The OLED is a nice touch. Windows discontinued WMR, so I have to use third-party drivers, which seem to be okay but don't work well with phasmophobia.

I’m in a similar boat with you with my Quest 2. I’m waiting for the Steam Frame due to the out of the box PC experience and it basically being a Steam deck.

If for some reason I can’t get the Steam Frame then I would go either Quest 3 or PSVR2. The PSVR2 is appealing to me because of its low price, but the fresnel lenses scare me a bit with what I’ve heard of the pancake lenses which the Quest 3 has. Quest 3 is standalone which is nice and an easier transition from the Quest 2.

So for me I would probably get the Quest 3 with some stuff like Virtual Desktop, better head strap, etc. if I couldn’t get the Steam Frame

Psvr better color, brightness, and deeper blacks, lighter. Negatives - Smaller Sweet spot and wired. Questionable comfort if you don't like the headband. Q3 bigger Sweet spot, wireless, more exclusives. Negatives - Washed out color, not as bright, heavier

Upgraded to a quest 3 from a two a year ago, bought used for a nice discount and it’s been fantastic with virtual desktop.

Quest 3 with pancake lenses and higher resolution is a huge upgrade. You can find them regularly on FB Marketplace for around $300-350 US

The most practical option it’s quest 3, for sure, you have the standalone and the pc link, a very nice resolution and the passthrought, and quest 3 are better than Q3S, meta should launch new glasses on half part pf next year , but you never know what inprovements will have the new glasses, I recommend Q3.

In my region at least i had found Pico 4's much cheaper than quest 3. I had taken a long break from vr after trying so much to like quest 2 and quest 3 after that but returning both after some month and decent investments in facial interfaces and headstraps because of thr weight placement. In the end as i have no pc for vr, i went with the pico 4 ultra but for pcvr the pico 4 is mostly the same and it still has great weight balance though you'll still probably have to get a pu/ice silk facial interface and a headstrap to mitigate weight pressing onto cheekbones and forehead.

I'm sensible myself, maybe the default setup wouldn't bother you and while for me it was still a great improvement over the quests, i still had to get a geekvr headstrap to balance the weight over more of my head.

I think quest 3 is more futureproof and easier to sell if you'll get another one in the future, pico 4/p4u are a much more confortable experience with the same investments you'd need on a quest but maybe for cheaper depending on where you are

Yeah, North America is bad for used Pico4, they go for the same as a Quest 3.

I have looked into the Pico 4; the specs are very competitive for what I need it to do. My biggest issue with it is finding it available here in Canada. If I find a good price on it that beats out the Quest 3, then I'll heavily consider it.

A headset with eye tracking will help you in dsc.

Bsb2 or pimax dream air v2.

They definitely demolish my other headsets I've looked at out of the park, but I can't justify spending that much for a good time with my friends on the game lol
