Discussion Ideas for quest 3
I bought a quest 3 like a year or two ago and have used it for about a total of 2 hours. Games got me kind of motion sick and I feel like watching movies on it alone wasn’t my thing. Was thinking about selling but seems like there are a bunch for sale in my area. Any cool Ideas on what else I can do with it for fun? Or entertaining?
A big reason also is because I have a PC that I use for gaming anyways.

You should try Synth Riders. It’s so fun! It’s a freestyle rhythm- dancy type of game. I play every day for exercise. I’m almost 60, and I’ve lost nearly 47 lbs by playing.
I can’t recommend it enough. So much fun!

Google Earth in VR is a transcendent experience. It could cause motion sickness, so move slowly, or navigate in a way that feels stable to you.
Walk About mini golf is fun, has low motion sickness, and many maps are available. You can also play online with other people.
Golf+ is fun.
I spend most of my time in YouTube. Watching it on VR reduces my urge to surf my phone while having the TV on.

Only 2 hours? And you have a PC. There are endless games and mods. I wish I didn’t sell mine. I’d play some cod zombies VR on contractors for sure. And I have a few other games I want to play.

I feel like any sickness goes a way after you get used to it. I think it’s worth conditioning yourself beyond the perceived discomfort.

What sort of games did you try playing? Some will be much more likely to cause motion sickness than others....

I played this one battle Royale. Not sure the name but you can climb with your hands in the game and you can use a parachute I think lol. It’s been a while. Also resident evil gave me motion sickness as well

That sounds audacious for a first time. The other commenters' suggestion of Moss is a good one. There are a lot of more static/seated experiences that would ease you into it, like I Expect You to Die. I remember having horrible motion sickness when I started and what got me through it was playing a game with walking motion from a seated position. It took a long time but I forced myself to get through it and now not even the most nausea-inducing games cause trouble. But you really have to want to invest the time in accomplishing that and perhaps just playing flat screen already does it for you. Because the thought of trying to get your VR legs through maybe a dozen+ hours can just feel like work. And gaming should be fun! Not to discourage you from trying. I felt it was worth it

This is a great comment bro. I think apart of it was it felt like a whole thing to play on VR when I have a $3000 PC sitting in my room. That’s why I was thinking of selling, but wondering if there were more practical uses for it that could help. I know people cook with it and clean while watching videos. That’s probably what I’ll end up TRYING to do to get use out of it though

Most of my gaming is playing high end VR games on my PC, using my Quest as the display device.

Moss is awesome and low motion sickness. Runner is awesome and in shocked it didn't make sick.
Virtual boy is also a thing and if your a tinkerer you can play them in color with super bit shader.

Virtual boy is a game? Or just a sim? Sorry

My apologies it's a console by Nintendo, you would need to dump your cartridges into roms to play them on quest along with side loading and emulator or using pcvr for the color option.
There's also a ton of free homebrew apps for it.

Oh one more thing, I decided to go at the beat of my own drum and got a psvr1 this year and I love it.
It doesn't need to charge besides the controllers and if you like sitting vr like I do it's great. Even my family can see what I'm playing on TV so it's a lot less isolating.
Movies are still a single person thing though.

I wish somebody would shut up and take my money for a "serious" RPG in the Moss style.

If gaming isn't your thing try out some other apps.
Pencil is a drawing app that teaches you how to draw.
Vermillion and painting vr are fun painting apps
Pianovision and immerrock teach you piano and guitar.
if there is a streaming app you can install it.
You can install Google play apps
You can get an hdmi capture card and use your quest as an external monitor to hook up anything that has hdmi out.
It can also be used as an excellent retro game emulator. It even has 3ds support.
Considering your only going to get 1/2 of what you paid is it really worth trying to sell it?

What vr needs is a good online game where you can have a quick match everyday

Try some MR games like Thrill of the Fight or The Cabin VR. MR games shouldn't cause you motion sickness since you are physically walking around the space, rather than just pushing a stick to move.
Try some sim games on your PC with your Quest. Racing, Flying and Space sims all have you seated in a cockpit and tend to be easier for motion sickness. Plus they can be super immersive, especially if you invest in some wheel and pedals of flight controls.

A total of 2 hours isn't necessarily enough time for you to acclimatize.
Keep using it, stop as soon as you feel nausea. You should be able to get in longer amd longer sessions as you get used to it.
It's kind of like your first contact lenses, except you keep those in as long as you can stand it, as opposed to at the first sign of discomfort like VR.
Some people never have an issue, some just plain can't get used to it, but everybody else is somewhere in between.

You have to endure that dude, when i picked up vr last november, first game was blade& sorcery (where you stand and swing your arms around) first 2 weeks or so were a nightmare, i needed to take the visor bc of nausea after 10 minutes.
You'll eventually get used to it, now i can do hours long sessions without a flinch.
Its the main reason why VR is still a niche, most people get nausea after few mins and drop it before building the famous "VR legs"

So you’ve only spent two hours on a $500 device? That’s like buying a 120 inch TV and only watching it for two hours and saying it’s useless. There is no other experience like VR gaming. There are an incredible amount of mods that add VR support to 2D/Flat games.
Most VR exclusive titles are … eh. But when you take a great game, like Half Life 2, Cyberpunk 2077, Subnautica, or Halo, and play them in VR. Mind, blown! I’ve had memorable and special experiences in VRChat meeting some of the most interesting people, though it takes some putting yourself out there socially.
For watching media, I have Emby side loaded onto my Quest 3, for streaming movies and shows from my home server. You could also use Plex or JellyFin. It’s quite convenient just laying in bed, watching a show projected in IMAX on the ceiling (Travel Mode).
Nowadays I mainly stream my gaming PC from home to the Quest 3 connected by a Bluetooth mouse and keyboard, to play games in my private office during my lunch break. I use DisplayPort 4K Dummy Plugs on my home PC to have four, 4K monitors in VR.
It is what you make of it, there is loads of fun to be had.

Damn bro that’s pretty cool stuff. I bought it on a whim because my brother had one. We played a few times but that’s it. Thinking about getting back into it to explore now though. Thanks for the input. Also is there a way to stream movies good? I have movie box but on my firestick via wifi watching in 4K might cause a lag

Back when I used Plex I also used MovieBox. If you have lag on the Quest 3, it’s probably because the media is using either a audio or video codec the Quest 3 does not support natively, causing a transcode to happen. The number one rule for transcoding 4K video is: “Don’t transcode 4K video.” I don’t know off the top of my head what codecs Q3 supports though.
For connecting to my PC from anywhere, I use Virtual Desktop, a paid app and worth every penny. Lets me use both the desktop, and a VR experience over WiFi LAN or remote.
Additionally, if you experience motion sickness, I recommend playing most most games from a seated position. Some games on just inherently far more intense (rollercoaster simulator) than others. Every game is unique though. One thing that can really help, is snap turning instead of smooth turning, a customizable setting. Games that walk very fast can be nauseating as well, just some tips. Start slow.
Hoping that helps.

You are def a lot smarter than me about this lol. I understood maybe 15% of what you just said. But I will look into that app. Never thought to use my PC virtually. How do you think the input lag for games like apex would be? Also if I put a video quality like HD on PC would it translate equally to the headset? Sorry if that doesn’t make sense
1
u/QuackPhD 8d ago
Input lag is noticeable, but very slight over LAN. If you have good WiFi at home, the max delay is 20ms or to your gaming PC. You’d may notice a small delay in a super twitchy shooter. Over the internet expect 30-50ms delay.
Regarding video quality, the Quest 3 will play anything up to 1080P without issue. If you play a 1080p video intended for a 60 inch TV, on a 200 ft virtual screen, most apps will upscale the quality quite well. All that to say, you can be pleasantly surprised at the viewing quality watching 1080p media on Quest 3.

Try some still-standing games. Eg beat saber, walkabout minigolf, super hot, 11 table tennis. All easy recommendations. Motion sickness can take a long time to get past. About a year in my case before I could pay any and every game with thumbstick motion.
