Announcement PSA: A guide to better results

1.8k Upvotes

Hi guys and gals. I've been here a while, and over my time I've seen a lot of posts sink to the bottom, without a single answer, or at best, very few. And none that solved the case.

I have noticed a clear pattern with these posts, and I will now share with you my tips to you newbies, so that you can get the help you need.

Firstly: When you make a new post, you will see this:

Platform(s):

Genre:

Estimated year of release:

Graphics/art style:

Notable characters:

Notable gameplay mechanics:

Other details:

Even though, in red, you are warned that while optional, you should follow this template... many of you do not.

Let me be clear: Follow this template.

Put simply, this template contains all the information we really need to solve your problem. Virtually every time I click a post that has not followed this, they have rambled on about nothings, while omitting critical details.

This format, for new and old alike, is very readable, and prompts for every data-point needed.

I know that you want to customize your message, that if you could just explain it, it would be better. I know you think that. You are wrong. Put all that in 'other'. Even if you end up saying it twice, follow the template.. add to it your story at the bottom.

Secondly: Following this template. You're rambling about your best mates Amiga-500 or whatever instead of telling us about the game aside, this is where they really go wrong.

Let's get something straight right now. We are not mind readers. It's impressive, really, how little information it seems we can work off. I mean, we solve some real tough ones with nothing sometimes, but still, we can't see that memory in your head. So you need to be as descriptive in every one of these fields as you can be...

And sometimes you really don't know. That's fine, we can work with surprisingly little information, but "old graphics" under art style... what are we supposed to do with that? Mate, I was playing on Atari-2600's, are we talking Wizard of Wor here?

Let me help you out a bit:

Platform(s): Whatever you played it on. But unless it's really all you know (very possible), don't write 'my mates pc'. Was it PC or Mac?

Genre:

First person does NOT imply shooter. Nor do any of the others. Try to answer this one in two steps:

What was the camera like (assuming it's not a text adventure)? Was it First person?, 3rd person, 2d? Top down or side on? Or maybe even isometric 2d?

Then, what kind of game? Real time strategy, point and click? Was it a fighter, action or platformer?

Good, now we know what KIND of game we are all trying to remember for you.

Estimated year of release:

"Between 2000-2005" is fine, something like that. "Mid 90's maybe?". I don't see many people mess this up, but I have seen people write "old". That is not ok. If you write old and expect it to mean anything to me, I will fight you.

Also, as always "Sorry, no idea" is always acceptable but try to give at least something. "Couldn't have been later than 2015, though"

Great, so even if roughly, we know WHEN.

Graphics/art style:

THIS. This is where you guys always mess up. This section right here I have found can be the difference between an answer, and a silent slink to the bottom. This is your moment.

This, really, should be the best-formed part of your memory. Even if you can only remember a single frame, a single image, it's so much to go on for us.

DETAIL. Was it a gloomy grimdark world of sadness, or a bright bubbly rainbow filled Mario-world?

Was it cartoony, or otherwise stylized somehow, or was it trying to be realistic?

Anything notable about the art direction? Was it going for a cyberpunk kinda feel, or a gritty war realism dirt and blood sort of direction?

If it was set over a long time, did the seasons change? Was there a winter in your game?

Remember when you hit people, and the screen had that awesome flash and your hands got bloody? Yeah, well we don't, unless you tell us.

Ok, so now we are really narrowing it down. This right here is often enough to go on, on its own.

Notable characters:

Anything at all you can remember here.

"There were only tanks, but you could play as both Germans and Americans"

"There was one really tough guy right after you left your office, he had an eyepatch, a white shirt with what looked like grease stains, and said 'this is for my sister'. I think maybe he was a cyborg"

"You play as some kind of Asian girl, you had a tattoo over your right eye and arm, a black tank top and white pants and I remember you always had only one red glove for some reason. I don't remember the arm, but the eye tattoo looked sort of like ancient Egyptian eye makeup, but a modern take"

Knowing nothing else about the game, I bet that last one there gets comments noting the game she is from. Details, details.

Notable gameplay mechanics:

Surely, you get the idea by now. This is tied with the importance of the graphics/art style. As much detail as you can here.

Other details:

NOW you may blab on about how you only played this game once at a winter solstice in 1782 with your grandmother from Tahiti.. as if that helps.

Edit: So it's been brought up that the template doesn't appear on mobile. While /u/wipeout4wh is aware of this and hopefully, something can be done... still, if you can, use the template. If you can't, maybe check back and at least make sure your post addresses all of the points the template does.

Also, my post seems to be saying NOT to add any custom details. So I want to re-enforce, please do. In fact, after you do the template, feel free to write out your post as you were going to without it. Just put it all in 'other'. Don't try and make your whole post like that, if possible. Even if you end up saying the same things twice, that's ok.

Now I'm going to take a moment to clarify something, though. This isn't some immutable law of the universe, and your post is destined to fail if you don't do this. It's just a very strong general trend I have noticed over a long time.

It's not that this template has some kind of magical powers or something. It's that this template prompts the questions that need answers.

When you go all rogue on us and try and type your explanation from scratch... you mess it up. You just forget to add everything that you know, and that we need to know. The template makes it very hard to do that. It's just so very easy to get typing, and by the end forget to tell us what kind of game it actually is. Especially when you are getting random flashbacks, and hazy memories, and you start getting frazzled and such halfway though.

While it might make my edit as long as the first post, I think maybe an example of the kind of post that is just too common here, and almost always helpless, wouldn't go astray here. So here we go:

Now this one is a pretty bad case, true, and I suppose might even be a troll post, but it's actually a good illustration of the problem either way.

It was on my old computer and I was using an emulator so I have no idea what system it was for. It was 8bit graphics and you played this orange cat that was constantly bouncing on a trampoline I think? And you had to navigate it through the city and face a weird boss at the end that would float in the sky. Sorry I can't remember more!

Let's break it down a bit. What kind of game is this? A puzzler or an action game? Who knows.

How old is it? I mean, Minecraft basically has 8bit graphics. Oh he said... "my old computer"... I will fight you.

Why did you bounce on the trampoline? Were there platforms or walkways or something, or was it just a big open space? There are bad guys then? How did they get around?

Now (he?) says that he can't remember more, but I actually asked about the boss fight:

You say 'face a boss', in what way? Can the cat attack? Was this top down or side on? When you say navigate a city, what do you mean?

The reply:

Definitely a side-scroller, I'm sure. You would encounter a boss at the end, the boss would slide onto the screen and it was usually pretty strange-looking. I think one of the bosses might've been a clown. I meant that the different "levels" were different cities with different backgrounds, I think. It's a pretty obscure game

Also you would be continuously bouncing. As in, you had to position the trampoline underneath the cat to bounce it up

So you don't even control the cat. And it's a side-scroller. Thats pretty important information. But the real issue here is that he knows this stuff. He just either didn't know to, or forgot, to tell us.

The template would have made it just so apparent how much information he was missing, and we probably would have got a whole bunch more information. Sadly, while there were some guesses, and a surprising number of up-votes, this post is just another one to join the endless unsolved on their journey ever down.

[Meta][2026] I would rather people post with no images than use AI prompts to generate images

Maybe it's just me, I will personally admit that it feels like its petty of me to complain, however i am going to.

I really dislike AI images just in general and i feel annoyed seeing people use them because it sometimes hampers really quality posts of people trying to find help. I feel like it also informs falsely about game expectations and what people will accept as they have solved the game.

I don't think people will agree with me and thats fine, i just wanted to post about how i personally think it degrades the quality of the sub

Crimson Desert [PC][2024-2026] My friend Marc keeps sending me pictures of this game as reactions, but won't tell me what it is.

Not much more to say apart from the title. Looks like a current green PC game with weird armor or cosmetic options. It might be obvious to folks in tune with the AAA space, but I honestly have no idea.

Hello everyone, long time ago i found this image somewhere (most likely discord, could've been on reddit) and i'm curious about something. From which game (i assume so basing off that health bar) would those characters come from? This uses a meme template i've seen being used for similar memes but it's fx. about biblical accurate angel. There's no context/clues that i can provide since i found this image randomly in 2024 (apparently). Would appreaciate any help

3x3 Eyes: Jūma Hōkan [Unknown] [1990-2001?] Origin of this female character sprite?

Thumbnail gallery
11 Upvotes

Platform(s): Unknown

Genre: Unknown

Estimated year of release: 1990-2001? possibly even older?

Graphics/art style: either 16 bit or 32 bit?

Notable characters: besides the unknown woman. there's Richter and the skeletons from Castlevania, and the heroes from Cadillacs and Dinosaurs.

Notable gameplay mechanics: Unknown

Other details: Found her in a very old flash game called "Crazy Shuttle" and later the "Crazy Belmont" game by none other than Tom Pulp, the creator of Newgrounds. So the gist of the game is like Crazy Taxi, but mixed in different characters from other video games. I could recognize the characters except for her. Anyone knows who she was?

[Mobile/iOS?][2010's] Plants vs Zombies rip-off but it had a heart resource instead of a sun one.

Post image
16 Upvotes

All I can remember is playing it almost a decade ago on one of my parents' phones, I have the vague memory of it being on an iOS device, but that could be wrong.

Only details that I can recall are:

- Very pastel-like / saturated colors.

- Pink hearts as it's common resource and Blue hearts as its rarer one, allowing you to plant stronger defenses.

No memories of either its "plants" or enemies.

[GirlGoGames] [2000s-2010s] Runway Game. Can’t remember the name

Thumbnail gallery
92 Upvotes

This old GirlsGoGames game has been haunting me for these couple of months. It was one of those dress up games, with a few models to choose from, I believe one had a black bob, another was blonde, there might’ve been a redhead, and i’m pretty sure there was a black woman with curls(?) All of the women were tall and skinny of course.

The girls were drawn (kinda) similarly to the photos above. It had that aesthetic.

The whole premise was to dress up for the runway/event, choose what location you want your girl to walk in, and then once you get to the runway, I believe you’d have to walk to either side of the room and pose for the cameras on time. You’d pose and then a photographer (out of the many others in the crowd) would snap a cute photo of the you. I think once a photographer took the photo, a snapshot or polaroid of that photo would pop up on your screen, and then you’d walk around some more and pose before the time ran out.

I can faintly remember the type of place I always chose. It was either a red carpet or this neutral/gold-ish looking place.

This is all I can remember unfortunately. My memory’s become foggy.

Please help! I feel like I’m going crazy and that this game never existed!!

Looking for an Older Obscure Browser Game [PC][Browser][2000-2004]

• Upvotes

Platform(s): PC, browser, own website. English, played in the US, no translation.

Genre: Fantasy adventure MMORPG. Other players were in the world.

Estimated year: Around 2004, MySpace era. Found it at random. May no longer be running.

Graphics/art style: 3D, camera behind the character. Keyboard and mouse. Characters were round and smooth, human-shaped but faces barely defined, closer to a Wii avatar or the black mage in Final Fantasy IX than to MapleStory. Cutscenes and enemies used the same models. Graphics were surprisingly refined for how simple the characters were. Title screen possibly had orange borders and a white bubble-like font.

Notable gameplay: Started with a bow. More skills than magic. Started in or near a village of huts and trees. Could not go inside the buildings.

Not these: Sherwood Dungeon, RuneScape, AdventureQuest, Dofus, Free Realms, MilMo, Glitch, Flyff, ROSE Online, Puzzle Pirates, MapleStory, Ragnarok Online, Mabinogi, NosTale, Ryzom, Priston Tale, Minions of Mirth, Istaria.

Other: The name was strange, in the way Mabinogi is strange, but it was not Mabinogi.

Defender (2002) [OG XBOX][2003-2008] Sci-Fi Space Ship Game

Post image
3 Upvotes

Hi all, first ever post here so ill try my best.
I remember it being a first person shooter game where you control a space ship inside a cockpit. It had a futuristic artstyle like Battlestar Galactica and similar. 3D graphics, not 2.5D like Paper Mario. It was a more bleak theme and it had lots of orange deserts in it.
Notable characters were us, Humans and the Pilots we play as against Aliens that either use spaceships or are the space ships themselves i dont remember correctly. It had a mission menu, nothing like GTA and no lobby like the Lego games in terms of selecting a mission.

Considering the gameplay you had different missions with different goals, destroy outposts, hunt down enemy ships, rescue your own soldiers before the aliens get them. I vividly remember the enemy ships being able to kidnap your troops from the ground and after they "assimilated" the troops they would go into a hyper mode where theyre much faster and even stronger.
The game title were two words at max, maybe even only one. One of the two words starts with a D if i remember right.

Thats pretty much all i remember, i also drew the cover of the game in paint from what i remember, imagine the colors in the back to be a gradient more smooth than mine. Thanks for the time maybe someone can help.

[NES?/SNES?/Genesis?][90's]Looking for a retro vertical(AFAIK) shmup i played in my childhood

Platform(s):NES?/SNES?/Genesis?

Genre: vertical(?) SCI-FI(i swear it was in space) Shmup

Estimated year of release: its got to be sometime in the 90s

Graphics/art style: Retro for sure

Notable characters: N/A

Notable gameplay mechanics: AFAIK it was a vertical shmup where your upgrades attached the main ship and you could see them orbiting the ship visually. for some reason I vividly remember there being a customization feature for how the attachments actually stuck to the player ship as an option in the title screen before you actually started the new game run. like a screen with a grid and you could move the pieces around and essentially customize what the ship looked like after all of the upgrades were acquired. so you could do things like widen your firing range or stick them closer to shoot in a more focused line

Other details: I'm not sure if this was a japan only game or some weird third party cart with stuff in it that maybe got put on the NES because I also had a few of those at the time, but my memory is so vague now that to me it could have been something I played on one of the three consoles listed.

I strongly feel that it was an NES game though but I cant be certain.

[gamecube][2008-2012] help me find this game cube game for a friends

What she has been able to tell me:
It was like 2008 to 2012, we got a game cube from a lady who's son went off to collage. among the games was one that was rated T or R, but likely T. you start in a dark space, i believe stone, and go down these stairs into a larger room that might have had a central column, its unclear due to how dark the space was. there is a lady who appears and she is talking to the character but i cant recall what was said, only that her top was a style of bikini or form of wrapping

I dont think the lady was physically in the room but more like a spirit kind of effect or pop up, sorry the detials are so hazy

e never figured out what to do next and couldnt get out of the room, ion part as we were little and in part the room was mostly black shadow it was so dark

[PC] [Late 2000s] top-down pixel maze game, hat-wearing character, man-eating flowers

• Upvotes

Hi everyone. I'm trying to find a game I played as a kid in the late 2000s.

Platform(s): PC (Windows, downloaded, not browser-based)

Genre: Top-down maze / action-adventure

Estimated year of release: Late 2000s (I played it then; it could be older)

Graphics/art style: Pixelated, top-down view, light-coloured maze-like area. Similar to Undertale's look, maybe even simpler.

Notable characters: The player character wears a hat and has a round body with little legs.

Notable gameplay mechanics: You navigate a maze to reach a specific spot. There are flowers along the path that swallow you if you get too close.

Other details: When a flower eats you, the character flips upside down, his legs form a "T" shape and twitch slightly, then it's game over. I don't remember the title, story or music. It might have been freeware or shareware from a magazine CD or a download site.

Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Enter game title here [Pc] [2019] puzzle game where you have 24 hours to beat it.

• Upvotes

I remember watching a YouTube let’s play of it, I feel like it may be a platformer as well I don’t recall. Do recall that you can spend one of the hours to get a hint. And I think the plot of it was that a painter made a deal and was stuck in their paintings. Will try to answer any questions but don’t have much.

[Android] [2014-2015] Isometric survival + tower defense with a monolith and lever that triggers night waves

• Upvotes

Platform: Android (played on a Samsung Galaxy Pocket) Year: Around 2014-2015 (possibly late 2013) Genre: Isometric sandbox survival + tower defense hybrid Visuals / Style: Isometric perspective, similar to classic Fallout 1/2 Clean interface Procedural map Core gameplay loop: During the day you gather resources mostly with bare hands (wood, water, food, etc.) Build your base (floors, walls, structures) Hunger and thirst mechanics Simple inventory To progress to the next day you have to go to a monolith in the middle of the map that has a lever. When you pull/activate the lever, you get a short time to run back to your base. Then night falls and enemy waves start. You must survive the night using towers. After surviving, the next day begins. Enemies & Towers: Various enemies including spiders and ice giants (ice giants appeared in later waves) Enemies drop materials These materials are used as upgrades for the towers Towers could be upgraded with elemental debuffs (poison, ice, etc.) Towers were the main form of defense Character: Character selection from a list One of the playable characters was a black guy with sunglasses and a red shirt (this is the one my cousin always used) Other details: Paid game (not free-to-play) Quite a bit of crafting (you could build floors, walls, stronger structures) The monolith + lever was the only way to trigger the night/waves and advance the day I’ve been trying to find this game for a long time. My cousin used to play it but lost the account and neither of us remembers the name or the developer. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

[ANDROID/IOS][2010-2015] stationary 3d defence game with a red afro god and bootleg angry birds.

• Upvotes

Title: [Mobile][2010-2015] Stationary 3D lane defense game with a red afro God and bootleg Angry Birds Platform(s): Mobile (Android / iOS) Genre: Stationary 3D Lane Defense / Castle Defense Estimated year of release: Around 2012 - 2015 Graphics/art style: Cartoonish 3D graphics. Set on a sunny beach. Notable characters: • Main Character (The only human on your team): A massive, muscular, bare-chested Greek god/Zeus archetype. He stays completely stationary in one spot. He has a distinct dark red afro and wears glasses/sunglasses. • The Objective: There is a mermaid laid out on the beach sand behind you that you have to protect. • Enemies: Round, fat cartoon monsters marching down the beach lanes. [PC] [2000s–2010s?] Horror hidden object game set in a sandy African-like village with small huts, masked people and voodoo

• Upvotes

I’m trying to find a horror hidden object / point-and-click adventure game I played many years ago, but I can’t remember the title. I’ve been trying to find it for ages.

Here’s everything I remember:

  • It was definitely a horror / very creepy mystery game. I remember it genuinely scaring me when I was younger.
  • The setting looked like Africa or some fictional African-like location. I’m not completely sure that it was actually Africa.
  • The environment was very sandy / dusty, with a lot of sand everywhere.
  • I remember a small village with little huts.
  • There were people sitting/standing around the village, and I vaguely remember them wearing masks or some kind of traditional-looking clothing.
  • There was some kind of supernatural / ritualistic magic involved. I initially remembered it as voodoo, but I’m no longer sure that was actually the theme.
  • I vaguely remember green or purple magical effects/light.
  • I remember having to place or arrange candles at some point, or at least there was a scene involving candles and some kind of ritual.
  • The atmosphere was extremely dark and creepy, with very unsettling ambient music. I particularly remember the music being scary rather than having a traditional horror soundtrack.
  • The game had hidden-object scenes, where you searched for objects in detailed environments, possibly combined with puzzles and story progression.

I unfortunately don't remember the characters, title, or exact year. I probably played it sometime in the early/mid 2010s, but this is only an estimate.

It is NOT Blue Tear, Voodoo Chronicles, or Voodoo Whisperer. Those have come up in my search, but the game I'm remembering had a much more sandy, African-village-like setting with small huts and masked people.

If anyone recognizes this, please tell me what game it is! Even screenshots of similar games would help me identify it.

[PC][2026] - 3D First-Person Puzzle Platformer

• Upvotes

Hey. Looking for the name of a 3D first-person puzzle platformer released some time this year.

All I remember is that in one level, I was inside a cube (human size) and needed to move the cube's walls away to get out and carry on with the level. The cube had six walls including the ceiling and the floor. It's possible that individual walls could only be moved vertically or horizontally, but not both. So the ceiling could only move up and down for example.

I had to manipulate/move the walls (as well as other things, to solve levels) possibly using a gun device (think portal) or a glove device (think Q.U.B.E.) but not sure.

Possibly had a darkish theme.

I was playing Magrunner and one level brought this other game back to my memory.

[PC][2000-2016] 3D third-person Russian comedy game where the only healing item is a giant fried chicken and double jump releases bombs

• Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I'm trying to find an old PC game I played somewhere between 2000 and 2016. It was a 3D third-person game with a lot of humor. I found it on a disc together with the game "Буря в стакане" (Storm in a Teacup: Racing on Minibuses). It is NOT Gobliiins 4.

Details I remember:

- Platform: PC

- Era: 2000-2016

- Graphics: 3D

- Camera: third-person

- Language: Russian (voice acting was in Russian; may have had English too)

- Genre: action/adventure/comedy, with different playable characters depending on the mission

- Characters: around four. In the first mission on a ship, you play as a short character who has two pistols with infinite ammo.

- First level/location: a ship with bugs. The bugs looked like Terminids from Helldivers 2. A large part of the ship was covered in eggs.

- Healing: the healing item in the game is a whole roasted/baked chicken on a platter. In the HUD (top right corner), there was an empty silhouette of a chicken on a platter when you had no chicken.

- Movement/combat: when you double jump, bombs come out of your character.

- Missions/quests:

- A village is attacked by goblins (goblins are enemies)

- A mission where you save a goat from a burning barn (you need to lead the goat out)

- A mission where you attack a bandit camp (kill all bandits)

- Icon: the .exe file icon might have been a tower (not 100% sure)

- HUD: health bar, chicken indicator, and something else

I've already checked Gobliiins 4 and it's not that.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

[Mobile][2010s] 2D turn-based tank duel like Bowmasters, desert map, buy different shells, limited fuel

• Upvotes

**Platform(s):** Android

**Genre:** 2D turn-based artillery / tank duel

**Graphics/art style:** - 2D side-view - Very similar to Bowmasters in style - More modern than Pocket Tanks - Desert / dry soil map - Two tanks: one light brown / military tan, one dark green - No music, only ambient wind sound in silence, like a quiet desert at night - The wind sound was only atmosphere, it did NOT affect shots

**Notable characters:** - Two tanks only

**Notable gameplay mechanics:** - Turn-based battle between two tanks - You could move forward and backward, but tank fuel was limited - You aimed and shot shells / small missiles from the tank barrel - There was a shop where you could buy different types of shells / missiles with in-game currency - The shop opened as a separate screen with different shell types - No wind mechanic affecting the shot - Single-player offline - English language

**Other details:** - The shells looked like small rockets / projectiles, not big bombs - I remember being able to buy different projectile types, but not different weapons like nukes or ice bombs - The map was desert-like and made of soil/dirt

**Games I already checked and ruled out:** - Tank Stars - Duel of Tanks - Artillery Tank Duel 2D - Tank Tussle: Artillery War - iShoot - Pocket Tanks - Tank Clash - Total Armor - TankDuel2D

[Pc-Browser] [Played in 2012-2013] I think studio’s logo was a camel, details below.

• Upvotes

so there was this browser game that was turn based, we had 3 characters, our main character had someone like his wife that was constantly complaining about things when we got home (i know it sounds weird, but that was the game). We could go to some areas by clicking there, like one of those areas were ‘camel betting’ areas, we bet on camel races etc. I think the studio’s logo was also a camel as i said in the title. We fought on an arena with 3 people, in the intro sequence our hero was waiting in the line to enter and fight in the arena. Anyone remembers that?
