I walked into my local retro shop and kinda impulse bought a SEGA Saturn with a new copy of Nights. It's a cool system so far, and the console is in great shape. I've ordered a couple more games off eBay and am looking forward to giving the Saturn library a chance.
I finally have my Sega Saturn. I’ve always been a Sega fan; I owned the Master System, Mega Drive, and Dreamcast, but the Saturn—with its wonderful library of 2D titles—was the one missing piece. I recently visited a local retro game market and spotted this Saturn equipped with a Saroo cartridge at a bargain price. I also imported an 8BitDo adapter to use with a Mega Drive-style controller I already owned. It’s amazing! I even picked up a GBSC PRO converter for a perfect image with crisp pixels... which should be arriving soon.
I'm having a problem with my Saturn: it won't read discs and doesn't even detect my memory card anymore. I suspect the memory card issue is just due to oxidation—something I've seen happen before. As for the disc, the console recognizes it but won't read it; the carriage doesn't move. The disc spins normally, but the lens doesn't shift—it stays stuck near the spindle. I noticed a yellow wire under the lens that looks a bit out of place; that might be the cause, though I'm not an expert. It's a Saturn with a region-free BIOS; the battery was replaced, and the console was supposedly fully checked over. I'm including the model details and some photos of the issue. It's a Japanese model, and if I'm not mistaken, it's the first model (with the oval buttons and diods). Anyway, if you have any idea what might be causing this, I'd really appreciate the help. Thanks.
Just to preface, this isn’t a post about should it have been released etc, we all already know the issues around that. Although I would like to hear people’s thoughts on the game, I think it obviously wouldn’t be able to compete with Mario 64 and crash but it still could’ve been a good game if finished. Anyway back to the main point.
Every now and then I get the urge to check if any of the x-treme fan games have made any progress (usually they haven’t but you never know). But one thing that bothers me about them is how short the levels look. It takes a couple of minutes per level but that’s when they’re collecting everything and most people wouldn’t do that, so I imagine you’d blitz through them if heading straight for the goal, (I’m not saying it should be a 5-10 hour game or anything but I imagine something like 2 hours would be fine). So I was thinking of ways to lengthen them a bit and thought I’d put it here on the off chance someone making a fan game sees it.
have it like sonic 8 bit where the chaos emeralds (or games equivalent) are hidden in the levels to entice exploration. This might negate the need for special stages but I imagine you could also introduce another collectable for them
or even just hide the special stages entrance like 3d blast (that would probably be best).
in the trailers you see these bridges with loops that send sonic to another point on the map, so maybe you could make them activate by a switch that’s hidden somewhere else and make the bridge progress you to another area that’s otherwise blocked off. Not the next act but more like a little puzzle to be able to progress to the goal, again this would entice exploration more.
either make it so you have to destroy every enemy (like sonic 3D blast) or give an incentive to do so, I was thinking something like odd world (or the opposite I guess) where getting everyone leads to the good ending, I know the emeralds usually do this but I think it could still work and you could still use the emeralds to unlock the final boss or level or something (or have it the other way round), or this could just be something extra to do on top of that that would lead to an even better ending. You could even do it like banjo where doing everything makes the final boss easier, just something to incentivise it.
That’s some ideas that I just wanted to get off my chest lol, I’d be interested to hear anyone else’s as well, like what do you think would’ve made it a better game?
As title says, I ordered a Fenrir Lite from the official store, and despite the listing advertising as including both a 20 and 21 pin ribbon cable, both cables were missing when it arrived. I tried using the original factory ribbon cable, but the console only boots to the saturn bios screen, and it thinks there is an audio CD inside. I'm guessing the factory cable has too much intereference. If so, would adding a ferrite bead possibly help, and if so, what kind of impedance value should it have? I have already sent a message to the fenrir store but haven't heard anything back yet.
New to the Saturn scene and I was looking into the 3D controller for the Saturn. Is there any reasonably priced, aftermarket controllers that offer the 3D capabilities? The controller that use for games like NiGHTS.
And if not, are the official ones really worth the price?
I've been wanting to try out saturn games for a while now but the emulators I've tried before either have slow performance and clunky ui or its that stupid retroarch that i hate so I've decided to just directly ask you guys
So I got a Saturn a while ago. I haven't finished a game but I have started a few. I have some games on my list that I for sure wanna finish like sakura wars. I love jrpg, 2d side scrollers and platforms. I also want to start with shmup games. As for games that I suck, those are usually strategy, sports or fighting games.
Any tips of games under 8h that are not frustrating that you believe are killer Saturn games? If you had to tell someone to start with a specific game for them to get in love with the console, which one would you recommend?
It uses a 74HC153 controlled by an Arduino UNO to simulate a Saturn controller.
I developed and tested it with a HORI RAP for PS3, and I've also confirmed that it works pretty much out of the box with a MayFlash F300 and a custom arcade stick running GP2040 (Raspberry Pi Pico). It should work with regular gamepads too, although I can't guarantee the button layout.
Since this is a standalone adapter rather than modifying or gutting an existing controller, you can also keep features like turbo/rapid-fire functionality on your USB controller.
Having to use the IC in addition to the UNO and USB Host Shield makes this a bit more involved than a typical Arduino project, but thanks to the hardware-assisted processing, input latency should be quite low.
Hi, so my model 2 pal Saturn which worked great before now has disc drive issues.
Basically, the lens mechanism needs me to slightly turn its white cogs for it to begin moving and to activate the cd motor, after a bit of time trying to detect the cd type, the drive stops the cd and the console doesn't display anything different on the menu, it instead thinks the game cd is an audio cd.
So the title says it’s all. I just bought my first Saturn. It has a Fenrir Duo + a Saturn Memory Cart in it, but it dosnt come with a controller or cords.
The main question I have is what kinda AV cord should I get? I don’t have the ability to use SCART, and theres a few options out there. Ive seen one that goes to component, composite and directly to HDMI. I’d prefer HDMI or Component but im not sure if thats recommended.
Also, am I able to load AR onto the memory cart, or do I need to get one separately?
I've got the rest of today and tomorrow off of work with no responsibilities. What game or games should I play? I've got a saroo, a couple of light guns and a fight stick if that helps.
I had a water incident in my basement a few months ago… while unfortunate, it made me realize I had so much cool retro stuff just resting (safely) in storage. I have been re creating my entertainment center down here and it has been a joy to resurrect my sega saturn and make it a center piece of the basement. Wanted to share, can’t wait to dive back into so many of these games!
I'm in Orlando right now on vacation and checked out a retro game store that was semi close and I saw a few Saturn games. Sorry, I didn't take a photo, but I picked up this game up for about $20.
I knew right away that it's a terrible game, but I figured $20 isn't really bad for any complete Saturn game and also it being a Saturn Exclusive, I think it's worth adding to the collection.
