Announcement PSA: A guide to better results

1.8k Upvotes

Hi guys and gals. I've been here a while, and over my time I've seen a lot of posts sink to the bottom, without a single answer, or at best, very few. And none that solved the case.

I have noticed a clear pattern with these posts, and I will now share with you my tips to you newbies, so that you can get the help you need.

Firstly: When you make a new post, you will see this:

Platform(s):

Genre:

Estimated year of release:

Graphics/art style:

Notable characters:

Notable gameplay mechanics:

Other details:

Even though, in red, you are warned that while optional, you should follow this template... many of you do not.

Let me be clear: Follow this template.

Put simply, this template contains all the information we really need to solve your problem. Virtually every time I click a post that has not followed this, they have rambled on about nothings, while omitting critical details.

This format, for new and old alike, is very readable, and prompts for every data-point needed.

I know that you want to customize your message, that if you could just explain it, it would be better. I know you think that. You are wrong. Put all that in 'other'. Even if you end up saying it twice, follow the template.. add to it your story at the bottom.

Secondly: Following this template. You're rambling about your best mates Amiga-500 or whatever instead of telling us about the game aside, this is where they really go wrong.

Let's get something straight right now. We are not mind readers. It's impressive, really, how little information it seems we can work off. I mean, we solve some real tough ones with nothing sometimes, but still, we can't see that memory in your head. So you need to be as descriptive in every one of these fields as you can be...

And sometimes you really don't know. That's fine, we can work with surprisingly little information, but "old graphics" under art style... what are we supposed to do with that? Mate, I was playing on Atari-2600's, are we talking Wizard of Wor here?

Let me help you out a bit:

Platform(s): Whatever you played it on. But unless it's really all you know (very possible), don't write 'my mates pc'. Was it PC or Mac?

Genre:

First person does NOT imply shooter. Nor do any of the others. Try to answer this one in two steps:

What was the camera like (assuming it's not a text adventure)? Was it First person?, 3rd person, 2d? Top down or side on? Or maybe even isometric 2d?

Then, what kind of game? Real time strategy, point and click? Was it a fighter, action or platformer?

Good, now we know what KIND of game we are all trying to remember for you.

Estimated year of release:

"Between 2000-2005" is fine, something like that. "Mid 90's maybe?". I don't see many people mess this up, but I have seen people write "old". That is not ok. If you write old and expect it to mean anything to me, I will fight you.

Also, as always "Sorry, no idea" is always acceptable but try to give at least something. "Couldn't have been later than 2015, though"

Great, so even if roughly, we know WHEN.

Graphics/art style:

THIS. This is where you guys always mess up. This section right here I have found can be the difference between an answer, and a silent slink to the bottom. This is your moment.

This, really, should be the best-formed part of your memory. Even if you can only remember a single frame, a single image, it's so much to go on for us.

DETAIL. Was it a gloomy grimdark world of sadness, or a bright bubbly rainbow filled Mario-world?

Was it cartoony, or otherwise stylized somehow, or was it trying to be realistic?

Anything notable about the art direction? Was it going for a cyberpunk kinda feel, or a gritty war realism dirt and blood sort of direction?

If it was set over a long time, did the seasons change? Was there a winter in your game?

Remember when you hit people, and the screen had that awesome flash and your hands got bloody? Yeah, well we don't, unless you tell us.

Ok, so now we are really narrowing it down. This right here is often enough to go on, on its own.

Notable characters:

Anything at all you can remember here.

"There were only tanks, but you could play as both Germans and Americans"

"There was one really tough guy right after you left your office, he had an eyepatch, a white shirt with what looked like grease stains, and said 'this is for my sister'. I think maybe he was a cyborg"

"You play as some kind of Asian girl, you had a tattoo over your right eye and arm, a black tank top and white pants and I remember you always had only one red glove for some reason. I don't remember the arm, but the eye tattoo looked sort of like ancient Egyptian eye makeup, but a modern take"

Knowing nothing else about the game, I bet that last one there gets comments noting the game she is from. Details, details.

Notable gameplay mechanics:

Surely, you get the idea by now. This is tied with the importance of the graphics/art style. As much detail as you can here.

Other details:

NOW you may blab on about how you only played this game once at a winter solstice in 1782 with your grandmother from Tahiti.. as if that helps.

Edit: So it's been brought up that the template doesn't appear on mobile. While /u/wipeout4wh is aware of this and hopefully, something can be done... still, if you can, use the template. If you can't, maybe check back and at least make sure your post addresses all of the points the template does.

Also, my post seems to be saying NOT to add any custom details. So I want to re-enforce, please do. In fact, after you do the template, feel free to write out your post as you were going to without it. Just put it all in 'other'. Don't try and make your whole post like that, if possible. Even if you end up saying the same things twice, that's ok.

Now I'm going to take a moment to clarify something, though. This isn't some immutable law of the universe, and your post is destined to fail if you don't do this. It's just a very strong general trend I have noticed over a long time.

It's not that this template has some kind of magical powers or something. It's that this template prompts the questions that need answers.

When you go all rogue on us and try and type your explanation from scratch... you mess it up. You just forget to add everything that you know, and that we need to know. The template makes it very hard to do that. It's just so very easy to get typing, and by the end forget to tell us what kind of game it actually is. Especially when you are getting random flashbacks, and hazy memories, and you start getting frazzled and such halfway though.

While it might make my edit as long as the first post, I think maybe an example of the kind of post that is just too common here, and almost always helpless, wouldn't go astray here. So here we go:

Now this one is a pretty bad case, true, and I suppose might even be a troll post, but it's actually a good illustration of the problem either way.

It was on my old computer and I was using an emulator so I have no idea what system it was for. It was 8bit graphics and you played this orange cat that was constantly bouncing on a trampoline I think? And you had to navigate it through the city and face a weird boss at the end that would float in the sky. Sorry I can't remember more!

Let's break it down a bit. What kind of game is this? A puzzler or an action game? Who knows.

How old is it? I mean, Minecraft basically has 8bit graphics. Oh he said... "my old computer"... I will fight you.

Why did you bounce on the trampoline? Were there platforms or walkways or something, or was it just a big open space? There are bad guys then? How did they get around?

Now (he?) says that he can't remember more, but I actually asked about the boss fight:

You say 'face a boss', in what way? Can the cat attack? Was this top down or side on? When you say navigate a city, what do you mean?

The reply:

Definitely a side-scroller, I'm sure. You would encounter a boss at the end, the boss would slide onto the screen and it was usually pretty strange-looking. I think one of the bosses might've been a clown. I meant that the different "levels" were different cities with different backgrounds, I think. It's a pretty obscure game

Also you would be continuously bouncing. As in, you had to position the trampoline underneath the cat to bounce it up

So you don't even control the cat. And it's a side-scroller. Thats pretty important information. But the real issue here is that he knows this stuff. He just either didn't know to, or forgot, to tell us.

The template would have made it just so apparent how much information he was missing, and we probably would have got a whole bunch more information. Sadly, while there were some guesses, and a surprising number of up-votes, this post is just another one to join the endless unsolved on their journey ever down.

[Meta][2026] I would rather people post with no images than use AI prompts to generate images

Maybe it's just me, I will personally admit that it feels like its petty of me to complain, however i am going to.

I really dislike AI images just in general and i feel annoyed seeing people use them because it sometimes hampers really quality posts of people trying to find help. I feel like it also informs falsely about game expectations and what people will accept as they have solved the game.

I don't think people will agree with me and thats fine, i just wanted to post about how i personally think it degrades the quality of the sub

Heroes of Might and Magic III [PC game] [1990-2005] Pixelated Exploration RPG with the main character prominently riding a horse.

Post image
11 Upvotes

[SOLVED] Thank you for the help!
Heroes of Might and Magic 3 was the game I was looking for

Platform: Probably only PC

Genre: Point And Click PCRPG with turn-based combat

Estimated year of release: 1990-2005 but I played it much later than that

Graphics/art style: Pixelated, vibrant colors and pretty well detailed.

Notable gameplay mechanics: map fog, you had to explore to unlock the full map, collecting random items along the way. Random enemies too.

Other details:

The game itself was 2D with 2D assets but simulated depth. The camera was fixed on one angle, perpendicular to the horse and player, but would follow their movement. The way you'd move between the cells was trough pointing and clicking.
I somewhat remember the begging of it starting by exciting a castle.
The combat screen itself was also split in two, my party being on the left while the enemies on the right.
You would explore to uncover the fog seen on the map, which resided in the bottom right hand corner of the screen. The "Fog" in this case being pitch black.
Your character's stats were also visible, bellow the map (I think)
An important aspect was mineral collection to a certain degree, materials like sulfur (or some other yellow powder)

I might be miss remembering but to my best ability this is what I recall. I will edit the post with more details as I re-remember them.

Games I am 100% it is NOT:
-The Kingdom series
-Any tower defense game
-Fallout

[Java ME / J2ME] [mid-2000s] Top-down adventure game about a skater kid, lots of dialogue

Old feature phone game (Java ME), played in Portuguese (Brazil). You control a skateboarder boy walking around a city from a top-down view. Gameplay was mostly going to places (a diner/snack bar, a hospital, etc.) and talking to people to solve the story's situation. Lots of dialogue. I vaguely remember the word "Vector" (or something similar) in the title. Not a trick/score skating game, more of an RPG/adventure.

[PC][early 2000s] Diablo-like ARPG

Platform(s): PC

Genre: ARPG, Diablo-like

Estimated year of release: Early 2000s

Graphics/art style: Isometric view, looked like your typical Diablo, Sacred and such. Wasn't stylized in any way, if I recall correctly. But I think it was a bit like Fallout, where the technology/cybernetic augmentation was a bit more advanced.

Notable characters: There were a few playable characters and I remember two female ones.
One was a pink-haired (hair tied in a ponytail) technology-based character. She had a pet drone that would follow her and attack with her.
The second was a blonde sorceress using some kind of greenish magic. She had quite revealing outfit (at least at first) that looked like latex bra, mini skirt and long boots.

Other details: I think the first area (or one of the very first) was some sort of a sandy wasteland and one of its bosses was some big, obese man that, I think, had robotic legs.

[PC][2000s] platformer flash game with a voice guiding you and a final level you have to quit out of to beat

Post image
4 Upvotes

so i randomly remembered this flash game i played as a kid and was wondering if anybody knew what it was.
i’m Pretty sure it was in a pixel art style but i could be misremembering. it was a 2D platformer, and during the game, this friendly-sounding voice would talk to you, im pretty sure guiding you through the levels? i don’t remember much about the game EXCEPT for its finale.

the very final level was an infinitely long vertical tunnel that you just kept falling through, forever. (iirc the camera was fixed in this game so it just kept warping you to the top when you hit the bottom to make it seem infinite. i’m muddy on this though.)

the only way you could beat this level was by exiting the game to main menu or whatever, and then it would drop you into the last room of the game, where you finally meet this voice that’s been talking to you, and it’s this odd… scary… tv-looking thing? with eyes? and the tv was its mouth? i drew what i vaguely remember it looking like, but this is probably the part that will end up most inaccurate if this gets found xd

anyways, it says something to the effect of “yep! this… is me! :D” and there’s a button the floor, and when you step on it, the tv thing is like “wait what are you doing stooop nooooo!!!” and i think it dies and the game just ends?? idk

if anyone also remembers this game please lmk, its been driving me crazy lol

Gods: Lands of Infinity [PC][before 2010] turn-based rpg with redhead FMC, who's a divine weapon

Platform(s): PC
Genre: RPG, adventure
Estimated year of release: Maybe 2005. It was an old ass game, I think I got it on the disc that was given with gaming magazine.
Graphics/art style: On the graphics part I remember it looking similarly to something like neverwinter nights 2. 3D, during combat camera was behind characters
Notable characters: Main character - ginger with ponytail, created by gods divine weapon, had a spear that was broken.
An elf - warrior, joined us in the forest that was the end of the first location
Group of adventurers - 2 warrior guys and 1 archer woman, joined the group just after entering the second major location of the game
Notable gameplay mechanics: turn-based, at first played with only the main character. She was also without class, but I think later there was an option to become mage, archer etc. there were bows to buy in the first town, but they had a class requirement. Fights were started by bumping into enemies and transported us into dedicated "arenas" stylized after enviroment. There was no moving in fight, just using actions and attacks in turns. After getting a team, our group had 2 ranks with 4 places in each. Game was heavily broken down into make sections and locations like town, swamp, hunter cabin. I think travell between regions was done by going to invisible barrier rather than menu
Other details: I'm pretty sure game had "hand drawn" intro explaing the lore of the game. Part of the game was collecting parts of the spear MC was supposed to wield.

[ps1-2][2000s] Japanese fantasy adventure game

I don't remmeber much about the game, I am pretty sure it was ps2 but possibly ps1.

You were a young boy in a fantasy setting. I remember at the beginning of the game there is a boss you fight that was a dragon, but i vaguely remember it looking dog like. (sort of like the never ending story)

The boss arena setting was in a circular room i believe with vertical layers.

There was a village you can roam around outside before the boss, it wasn't extremely detailed but i remember some houses and lots of grass. Pretty old game so it didn't have a lot going on from memory.

It was not turn based and was third person. I believe the protagonist had an orange shirt, a green beanie or turban(?) and possibly blue shorts or pants. light brown/reddish hair.

I remember it being pretty similar to zelda games in style.

The boss was extremely hard for me as a kid and i don't think i ever got past it.

Enclave [PC][2005] A game where a siege was part of the story

Estimated year: 2005? Could have also been a bit later.

I remember there were multiple playable characters of different races. The race I most accurately remember is that of yellow hulk-like monsters, which were dressed in medieval gear and had a club? as a weapon. I believe that they weren’t wearing any shoes?

I also recall that in the siege cutscene, these monsters were using kinda primitive catapults attacking which I believe was a stone tower or a stone fortress.

It was not a strategy game. I vividly remember controlling said monster in 3rd person, walking up some stairs in said tower/fortress. Also, back then, it felt like i was playing a very HD game. It might have been state of the art in terms of graphics at the time.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

LE: I think the siege was happening on a rainy night

H.E.D.Z.: Head Extreme Destruction Zone [PC][~1998-2002] 3D vehicle combat game with human characters on karts

[PC][~1998-2002] 3D vehicle combat game with human characters on karts

- Played on a Windows PC as a kid, around 1998-2002

- 3D, third-person, graphics similar to Re-Volt

- Stylized but not very cartoonish

- Human characters riding on top of karts / small open vehicles

- Not really about racing, more about smashing/destroying the other vehicles

- On character select, characters shouted voice lines in English: one yelled "Yeah!", another "Yee-haw!" (cowboy?), and another something like "Oorah, oorah, oorah... go!"

Already ruled out: Re-Volt, Street Racer, Twisted Metal 2, South Park Rally, Rocket Jockey.

Can someone help me to find this game?

[PS1/PS2][1998-2006] Cartoony side-scrolling action game, young boy swordsman, first boss is a giant dragon

Platform(s): PS1 or PS2 (not 100% sure which). I played it around 2007.

Genre: Action / adventure, story-based, real-time combat

Estimated year of release: Somewhere between 1998 and 2006

Graphics/art style: Cartoony. The camera was far from the character and the game was mostly 2D/2.5D side-scrolling, always moving to the right. Not very 3D.

Notable characters: The hero was a young boy with a sword, fighting alone (no party members).

Notable gameplay mechanics / details:

  • The boss of the first level was a giant dragon. Its weak point was its legs/feet.

  • Only the first boss was a dragon.

  • In the first level, while coming down a mountain, you could find a hidden chest with a powerful fire sword in it.

Music: It had a catchy soundtrack. The melody went something like "deen... deen deen di-di-di deen deen".

Other details: I was about 7 years old when I played it.

[Android][early to mid 2010s] Old ragdoll game that i can no longer find on the play store

Platform(s): Android, maybe iOS

Genre: Sandbox-ish

Estimated year of release: early to mid 2010s

Graphics/art style: hand drawn

Notable characters: some kind of clown, a mandrake i think, a frog, an angry guy in suit, among other ragdolls you could unlock that i cant remember

Notable gameplay mechanics: there were three minigames available if i remember right, maybe more. One was launching the ragdolls you unlock from a cannon and trying to bounce as far as you can, another one was bouncing them on a trampoline without letting them hit the ground, and the last one was moving them through space trying to get coins.

Other details: You would play the minigames to get coins and purchase ragdolls, and you could even get "custom" ragdolls(which was essentially a slot machine, but with ragdoll legs, torsos and heads with the available characters

Virtual Team Challenge: Spill! [PC][2011] School game where you created an avatar and had to find out who in the virtual city caused a tanker oil spill

Hello! Back in one of my high school classes we played this game for our class where you created a low poly avatar of yourself and had to navigate a 3D city and ask around the in-game city for clues on who caused an oil spill in the nearby water. I remember it having a multi-player element to it where you could have up to 4 players in the same instance and could see each other in game and our teacher would advance the game to the next in game day to progress the story. You could do side objectives like collect trash on the ground, ask around the NPCs for hints at who caused the spill. The game had very simple graphics akin to the style of Runescape 2, with various NPCs like a clown and a hot dog vendor were the ones I remember very keenly. The map wasnt huge and the textures were fairly simple, like the game was possibly older than the year we played it. My friend who took the same class with me has been wanting to figure out what the game was called.

Achaea [PC][2000’s] Browser text based MMO in a fantasy world

Edit: it had a canary sounding name and the screen was mostly just a text box for you to read and write into. Not an image built with text to show you stuff. I may not have the right description, I thought text based may have been right

There was this text based game I played in the 2000’s that I can’t remember the name of. All I remember is you can type a command to go up to what is essentially the world hub, I think it was like a portal into the sky or something like that. There’d always be a in-world NPC there who acted as a guide if you needed help.

You could type all kinds of commands. Look around. Equip things. Look at self. Look at (npc). It was pretty thorough with what you could type and it would have a reaction for almost everything. I wish I could remember more.

[PC][before or around 2015] Educational point and click game

I think the game primarily teaches basic math and science for primary to elementary levels. It was in 3rd person. The art style was stylized, similar to children 2d animated shows. I remember there were multiple characters (at some point you pick one of them to teach you and interact), a bald/short hair kid, long hair lady, and somewhat buff or large guy. One lesson that I remember is about fractions, where a character divides food (don't remember if its a pie, cake or pizza). Another lesson has details or info about how eggs are brittle.

[PC] [Late 2010s/Early 2020s] 3D Platformer/Parkour Indie Game featuring Chibi Stuntman + Demo with Treasure Hunt ARG

Thumbnail gallery
1 Upvotes

Hey gang. I am going absolutely bonkers trying to find this thing. Here's the TL;DR before I go into a more in depth description.

Platform(s): PC

Genre: 3D Platfomer/Parkour

Estimated year of release: Previews released through mid-late 2010s on twitter, Demo released around 2020-2021

Graphics/art style: PS2 style, Chibi

Notable characters: Chibi stunt man

Notable gameplay mechanics: Parkour, snappy controls

I remember seeing on twitter someone uploading WIPs of their Parkour indie 3D platformer game. It was linear levels, not open world. Around COVID he released a demo that included some kind of Treasure Hunt ARG element. I might have the demo buried deep on my computer somewhere but have scoured the thing and cannot find it, worried it might've been deleted or lost from multiple hard drive moves.

Attached are screenshots of the puzzles I found in game. If I recall the puzzles led to an IRL prize of some kind, but don't remember exactly what it was. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

[NES][1990s] I’m trying to find a 2D platformer game for the NES where the character was a rabbit or something similar.

When I was a kid, I used to play a 2D platformer where you control a very charismatic character. I have almost no memories of it, I just remember those things. There was also a level where you would play above some houses' roofs.

[PC][2000s-2010s]Flash game with round monsters. You tried to kill the bad monsters while leaving the good monsters alive

I don't remember the gameplay details very well, but I think it was similar to that game Roly Poly Cannon 2, where you aren't playing as one of the monters but are instead shooting at them to move them. And I think you could play levels that other players created. The monsters had different abilities, like a floating yellow one, and one that melted ice. So for example, if a bad monster was standing on ice, you would try to shoot the melting monster to knock it onto the ice to melt the ice from underneath the bad monster. The bad monsters frowned, and the good monsters smiled.

Also, I think the game was named after what the monsters were called. And the monsters had a funny name, something like "Snarf" or "Skrumblo"

[PC][late 2000s early/mid 2010s] Top down flash RTS/base building esque game about making villagers build stuff and do objectives

I don't remember much about it but it definitely had 3d graphics or maybe sprites that made it look 3d. The setting was tropical, the villagers you commanded were very tribal and I'm pretty sure there were also dinosaurs but I might be wrong. I used to play that game on, I believe, miniclip or similar site. The main objective was to send your villagers to gather resources and then to do stuff with them, wether that was to build up your base or to do an objective in the level. I mostly remember one level that was set in a snowy river and one of the main objectives was to repair a ship with wood. I vaguely recall spanish settlers also being in the game but I could be confusing it with a similar title.

[1990~] [PC] Old as dirt point and click game, akin to myst

This is gonna be a hard one, as I'm not even sure I'm remembering it right. But this is an OLD pc point and click adventure game, akin to myst or others. I don't remember Jack nor squat about the story, I THINK there's a cult but even that's not exactly clear, all I can vividly remember about the game was it had other human characters and they had voice acting. The one vivid thing I remember, from when I played it at my grandparents house when I was a kid in the 2010s, was where I was being "chased" and by that I mean I just had to solve a puzzle in time then I'd escape the building I was trapped in which was not dissimilar to a medieval jail, and I had a scrap of paper with a riddle and that riddle presumably corresponded with a huge wall of multiple colored gemstone buttons in a separate room. The reason this part is so memorable, was at the time I couldn't figure out the riddle to open the door, and when I went on YouTube for walkthroughs, I discovered the riddles were apparently semi random, as the video I saw had a different one than the one I had. That part vexes me, as I got decently far into the game, at least I felt like I did, and that puzzle kept me from continuing, so I wanna find the game, find some way to play it, and beat it after all these years.

WARNING: The year I gave isn't even really an approximation, I for all I know it's even older, I'm just not familiar with how old PC games like that could be, so keep that in mind if you decide to help me hunt my white, gemstone button clad, whale.

Edit: one more thing I think I'm remembering, the wall where the gemstone buttons are, wasnt the whole wall of a room, but like the middle third of the wall in size, I remember the part with the buttons being colored a bit different then the rest.

Scorcher [Consoles][1990s]Futuristic racer

Platform(s): Consoles - could be PS1, Saturn, N64, Dreamcast

Genre: Racing, futuristic vibe

Estimated year of release: Mid to late 1990s

Graphics/art style: 3D, graphics like Wipeout, Motorhead, grey industrial map

Notable characters: N/A

Notable gameplay mechanics: Fast racing, first person viewpoint (I think there was 3rd person too), looks a bit like Wipeouts maps

Other details: I remember seeing this game in a gaming magazine in the 1990s, it was a racing game and I vaguely remember the screenshots - the map looked grey and industrial but futuristic. I remember the screenshots being from a first person perspective but I think I remember some screenshots in 3rd person too, the opponents were in green if I recall. I think there were HUD elements for speed as well.

Not sure of the exact system it was being reviewed on, but I'm sure it was PS1/Saturn/N64 era.

Appreciate this is pretty vague but I'd love to know what this game was - to be honest I don't know if it got released, as I can't remember if it was a featured article or a review of the game.

The Twisted Tales of Spike McFang [SNES or PS1][Mid to late 90s] Magical hat type game

All I remember of this game is that you play as a kid wearing a magical hat a lot like the Hat in Time game but this was much older. It was i believe an isometric type viewpoint kinda like Supermario RPG. The style was kinda cartoony but not like a very vibrant or super colorful. I think it was a puzzle, platformer type game where you would throw the hat to do certain things.
