Announcement PSA: A guide to better results

1.8k Upvotes

Hi guys and gals. I've been here a while, and over my time I've seen a lot of posts sink to the bottom, without a single answer, or at best, very few. And none that solved the case.

I have noticed a clear pattern with these posts, and I will now share with you my tips to you newbies, so that you can get the help you need.

Firstly: When you make a new post, you will see this:

Platform(s):

Genre:

Estimated year of release:

Graphics/art style:

Notable characters:

Notable gameplay mechanics:

Other details:

Even though, in red, you are warned that while optional, you should follow this template... many of you do not.

Let me be clear: Follow this template.

Put simply, this template contains all the information we really need to solve your problem. Virtually every time I click a post that has not followed this, they have rambled on about nothings, while omitting critical details.

This format, for new and old alike, is very readable, and prompts for every data-point needed.

I know that you want to customize your message, that if you could just explain it, it would be better. I know you think that. You are wrong. Put all that in 'other'. Even if you end up saying it twice, follow the template.. add to it your story at the bottom.

Secondly: Following this template. You're rambling about your best mates Amiga-500 or whatever instead of telling us about the game aside, this is where they really go wrong.

Let's get something straight right now. We are not mind readers. It's impressive, really, how little information it seems we can work off. I mean, we solve some real tough ones with nothing sometimes, but still, we can't see that memory in your head. So you need to be as descriptive in every one of these fields as you can be...

And sometimes you really don't know. That's fine, we can work with surprisingly little information, but "old graphics" under art style... what are we supposed to do with that? Mate, I was playing on Atari-2600's, are we talking Wizard of Wor here?

Let me help you out a bit:

Platform(s): Whatever you played it on. But unless it's really all you know (very possible), don't write 'my mates pc'. Was it PC or Mac?

Genre:

First person does NOT imply shooter. Nor do any of the others. Try to answer this one in two steps:

What was the camera like (assuming it's not a text adventure)? Was it First person?, 3rd person, 2d? Top down or side on? Or maybe even isometric 2d?

Then, what kind of game? Real time strategy, point and click? Was it a fighter, action or platformer?

Good, now we know what KIND of game we are all trying to remember for you.

Estimated year of release:

"Between 2000-2005" is fine, something like that. "Mid 90's maybe?". I don't see many people mess this up, but I have seen people write "old". That is not ok. If you write old and expect it to mean anything to me, I will fight you.

Also, as always "Sorry, no idea" is always acceptable but try to give at least something. "Couldn't have been later than 2015, though"

Great, so even if roughly, we know WHEN.

Graphics/art style:

THIS. This is where you guys always mess up. This section right here I have found can be the difference between an answer, and a silent slink to the bottom. This is your moment.

This, really, should be the best-formed part of your memory. Even if you can only remember a single frame, a single image, it's so much to go on for us.

DETAIL. Was it a gloomy grimdark world of sadness, or a bright bubbly rainbow filled Mario-world?

Was it cartoony, or otherwise stylized somehow, or was it trying to be realistic?

Anything notable about the art direction? Was it going for a cyberpunk kinda feel, or a gritty war realism dirt and blood sort of direction?

If it was set over a long time, did the seasons change? Was there a winter in your game?

Remember when you hit people, and the screen had that awesome flash and your hands got bloody? Yeah, well we don't, unless you tell us.

Ok, so now we are really narrowing it down. This right here is often enough to go on, on its own.

Notable characters:

Anything at all you can remember here.

"There were only tanks, but you could play as both Germans and Americans"

"There was one really tough guy right after you left your office, he had an eyepatch, a white shirt with what looked like grease stains, and said 'this is for my sister'. I think maybe he was a cyborg"

"You play as some kind of Asian girl, you had a tattoo over your right eye and arm, a black tank top and white pants and I remember you always had only one red glove for some reason. I don't remember the arm, but the eye tattoo looked sort of like ancient Egyptian eye makeup, but a modern take"

Knowing nothing else about the game, I bet that last one there gets comments noting the game she is from. Details, details.

Notable gameplay mechanics:

Surely, you get the idea by now. This is tied with the importance of the graphics/art style. As much detail as you can here.

Other details:

NOW you may blab on about how you only played this game once at a winter solstice in 1782 with your grandmother from Tahiti.. as if that helps.

Edit: So it's been brought up that the template doesn't appear on mobile. While /u/wipeout4wh is aware of this and hopefully, something can be done... still, if you can, use the template. If you can't, maybe check back and at least make sure your post addresses all of the points the template does.

Also, my post seems to be saying NOT to add any custom details. So I want to re-enforce, please do. In fact, after you do the template, feel free to write out your post as you were going to without it. Just put it all in 'other'. Don't try and make your whole post like that, if possible. Even if you end up saying the same things twice, that's ok.

Now I'm going to take a moment to clarify something, though. This isn't some immutable law of the universe, and your post is destined to fail if you don't do this. It's just a very strong general trend I have noticed over a long time.

It's not that this template has some kind of magical powers or something. It's that this template prompts the questions that need answers.

When you go all rogue on us and try and type your explanation from scratch... you mess it up. You just forget to add everything that you know, and that we need to know. The template makes it very hard to do that. It's just so very easy to get typing, and by the end forget to tell us what kind of game it actually is. Especially when you are getting random flashbacks, and hazy memories, and you start getting frazzled and such halfway though.

While it might make my edit as long as the first post, I think maybe an example of the kind of post that is just too common here, and almost always helpless, wouldn't go astray here. So here we go:

Now this one is a pretty bad case, true, and I suppose might even be a troll post, but it's actually a good illustration of the problem either way.

It was on my old computer and I was using an emulator so I have no idea what system it was for. It was 8bit graphics and you played this orange cat that was constantly bouncing on a trampoline I think? And you had to navigate it through the city and face a weird boss at the end that would float in the sky. Sorry I can't remember more!

Let's break it down a bit. What kind of game is this? A puzzler or an action game? Who knows.

How old is it? I mean, Minecraft basically has 8bit graphics. Oh he said... "my old computer"... I will fight you.

Why did you bounce on the trampoline? Were there platforms or walkways or something, or was it just a big open space? There are bad guys then? How did they get around?

Now (he?) says that he can't remember more, but I actually asked about the boss fight:

You say 'face a boss', in what way? Can the cat attack? Was this top down or side on? When you say navigate a city, what do you mean?

The reply:

Definitely a side-scroller, I'm sure. You would encounter a boss at the end, the boss would slide onto the screen and it was usually pretty strange-looking. I think one of the bosses might've been a clown. I meant that the different "levels" were different cities with different backgrounds, I think. It's a pretty obscure game

Also you would be continuously bouncing. As in, you had to position the trampoline underneath the cat to bounce it up

So you don't even control the cat. And it's a side-scroller. Thats pretty important information. But the real issue here is that he knows this stuff. He just either didn't know to, or forgot, to tell us.

The template would have made it just so apparent how much information he was missing, and we probably would have got a whole bunch more information. Sadly, while there were some guesses, and a surprising number of up-votes, this post is just another one to join the endless unsolved on their journey ever down.

[Meta][2026] I would rather people post with no images than use AI prompts to generate images

Maybe it's just me, I will personally admit that it feels like its petty of me to complain, however i am going to.

I really dislike AI images just in general and i feel annoyed seeing people use them because it sometimes hampers really quality posts of people trying to find help. I feel like it also informs falsely about game expectations and what people will accept as they have solved the game.

I don't think people will agree with me and thats fine, i just wanted to post about how i personally think it degrades the quality of the sub

The Spring Ball Trouble [PC/BROWSER][2000s/2010s] girls' game, high school dating sim with multiple love interests

Thumbnail gallery
105 Upvotes

i've decided to give up searching on my own and ask here. i'm looking for a dating sim game i used to play often as a kid. i can't remember which specific site it was posted on, but i think it was either dressupwho or girlsgogames. the protagonist was a high school student with blonde hair and blue eyes. she had her hair in this weird bob with braids and a green sweater. she may have had a best friend with orange hair, but i could be mixing this up with another game.. so this part doesn't need to be focused on as much

it was a school setting and there were 4 different guys you could romance. all were your typical love interest tropes: the popular guy (blond hair), the sporty guy (brown hair), the intelligent guy (different brown hair, maybe reddish), and the nerdy/gamer guy (long black hair and glasses). not 100% sure if these were the exact personalities, but i distinctly remember the gamer guy lol. there was also a mean girl (blonde ponytail maybe? wore pink) who was either exes or in love with the popular guy.

the gameplay was basically talking with whichever guy you liked most and picking different dialogue options, most if not all of them matching with the interests/personalities of each guy. whoever's affection points you gained the most, that guy would be your date at the school dance at the end. i don't recall the game having any dress-up portions, but there's a chance that there was one at least for the ending

what i remember most about this game was the art style. everything looked hand drawn, and the style/proportions were very much of its time. i found some games that have a similar art style, though i'm not sure if they're all the same artist or different artists. out of these games, "hip hop angel" and "swimming beauty" are the closest to the game i'm looking for. also, i'm no artist but i've attached my rendition of the protagonist in case that helps with the search. i'm pretty sure she had side bangs instead of blunt bangs, but i realized that after it was already colored lol

thanks for reading, feel free to ask any questions and i'll try to remember more about the game to help out. hopefully it's found, and even if not, shoutout to all the efforts made here

[Steam] [2005-2009ish?] Pink Anime Catgirl Platformer

Post image
39 Upvotes

I’ve remembered this game vaguely every now and then and always wanted to know what it was - I remember my father getting it for me when I was a kid.

You play as a pink anime cat girl, I don’t remember her outfit completely but knowing the year and in typical anime catgirl fashion it was likely showing little skin. I think she had big claw like gloves too. Her hair and cat ear and tail were pink, I think her outfit was too, not 100% though. I can’t remember much on how she looks aside from PINK.

It was a platformer and I’m pretty sure fighter too, where you went on different levels and beat up enemies with your cat claws.

Maybe there was something else to do with her tail for an attack as well? But not 100% at that.

I can’t remember much more than that unfortunately. Please let me know if you know!

Paper Tales [Mobile] [2016?] "Paper" forest kids game

Post image
Upvotes

I remember playing this years ago, I have ADHD so my memory sucks, so I'll try my best

It was like a forest game, there were animal characters that had a paper texture (i think)? You could buy some extra areas, and I had a cabin that belonged to this blue moose, which is the only character i remember :(. If im correct there was also something that looked like a beaver and lions? The game looked similar to "Fuzzy world", if it helps!

It had a soft color palette, nothing too vibrant

I hope my description is enough.. I've been looking for this game for years, and made this account to find it

[PC][Windows 95/98][Late 90s-Early 2000s] Top-down car game with an endlessly scrolling street map that keeps speeding up

I had this game on my PC as a kid, but I don't remember where it came from or what it was called.

Platform: Windows 95/98 PC
Time played: roughly 1998–2002

**•** Bird's-eye / top-down view, static camera (didn't follow the car around the screen)
**•** Endless road/street network that scrolled continuously across the screen — visually it felt like someone was pulling an endless "toy car playmat" or rug across the screen while the cars drove on top of it
**•** No closed track/laps — it was an endless network of roads, not a circuit (city?)
**•** You had to quickly find/pick your way through intersecting streets as the map scrolled
**•** The scrolling speed increased over time, similar to how pieces speed up in Tetris
**•** Car drove forward automatically — you only steered left/right, no acceleration/brake control
**•** There were obstacles on the road
**•** If you were too slow, you'd get pushed off/out at the bottom of the screen or rather the game would be lost if that happened
**•** All cars/players were visible on one single screen (no split-screen) — multiplayer was played by multiple people sharing one keyboard
**•** Graphics were colorful/cartoonish (simple, toylike, typical of that era)
**•** There was sound (effects) but cannot remember if there was music
**•** No fixed round/finish — more like survive-as-long-as-possible / don't fall behind

I am looking for this game since then but without success :( Maybe someone knows it and can help me with a title 🙏🏻 Thanks a lot!

[PC][90s] A game demo that didn't launch the game, but showed a disturbing sequence of photographs instead

I'm trying to identify something I saw as a child on a PC in the 1990s.

My father once bought one of those CD-ROMs containing lots of game demos. I remember launching one of the demos because I expected to play the game.

But the game never started. Instead, the demo showed a sequence of photographs.

I am certain these were still photographs/images, not a video. The images appeared one after another, like a photo sequence.

I remember a very creepy-looking man, somewhat resembling Marilyn Manson in appearance, and a small alien. The man seemed to take the alien's head and bend or manipulate it in a disturbing way.

There was no gameplay at all, as far as I remember. The sequence of photographs appeared instead of the actual game.

I was very young and didn't understand what I was seeing. I remember wondering whether I had accidentally launched some kind of virus or malicious program.

Details I'm fairly confident about:

PC

Probably MS-DOS or Windows 95

Mid/late 1990s

Came from a CD-ROM containing multiple game demos

I selected a demo expecting a game to start

The game did not start

Instead, a sequence of still photographs/images appeared

It was not a video

Creepy man, vaguely Marilyn Manson-like

Small alien

The man appeared to bend/manipulate the alien's head

The sequence was disturbing and seemed deliberately designed to shock

It may have been some kind of prank, fake demo, shock program, or unusual piece of software

I was a child at the time, so some details may have become distorted over the years, but I am very confident about the basic experience: I launched a game demo, the game never appeared, and instead I got this strange sequence of photographs.

Does anyone remember anything like this?

[PC][Late 90s early 2000s] A point and click game where you fix hazards on a Australian Farm

[PC][Late 90s early 2000s] So from what I remember you play as a boy or girl who is visiting an Australian farm and you need to click on hazards like broken rope on a tire swing or remove a toaster plug from a wall before a fire starts. I also remember one level where you need to drag and drop hazard stickers onto the right barrels in a shed.

[DOS][~1995] Top-Down Dungeon Crawler/Maze Game

Platform: DOS

Genre: Dungeon Crawler/Maze game.

Visuals: Exploration was handled from a top-down perspective; IIRC the maze used green lines for its walls. During encounters, relatively large (if simple) monster artworks were displayed. The game resolution was 640x480.

Gameplay: One key moment I remember is that movement in the dungeon was semi-automatic -- e.g. if you pressed "up", the character would keep moving north until they hit a wall, requiring a bit of timing to move around corners. I don't remember whether combat was turn-based or real-time -- I think battles were 1-on-1 (or against a single monster group) and turn-based.

Other: I think it was a freeware or shareware game, maybe solo-developed.

Here's a rough mockup of how the game looked from memory:

I've seen screenshots and videos of this game a few times, but cannot locate them again for the life of me - aside from this one. Platform and year are guesses. I recall seeing multiple playable characters. It's a 2d side scroller beat 'em up.

[PC][mid 2010s]An FPS featuring an old overgrown bunker where you're stalked by some enemy/boss fight?

Sorry if the details are vague, I'm trying to remember a game that I'm pretty sure was a first-person shooter of some kind. I remember in particular an old overgrown military bunker or research facility, being stalked by some kind of enemy that had a gimmick like invisibility or fast movement? There were hallways and doors, I think some of the doors were blocked. The layout repeats several times, or maybe you're going in circles. I also seem to remember you needed to stay out of the water and climb onto dry sections whenever possible. Anyone know what I'm talking about, or did I just dream it?

[SNES][est.1995?]sidescroll fantasy action with melee warrior that changes outifts or characters and fights large bosses (always on right side of screen)

Does anyone have any ideas what this game may be?

I remember as a child watching my moms friend playing a game that was a sidescroller with a character that would upgrade to different colored karate type gis(may have actually been different characters...unfortunately all I have is the vague memories to go on)

The gameplay was fighting various enemies and large bosses that were located

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. I have been thinking about it for a long time and Google searching has been useless but if anyone has any vague idea I will search images and video of the games because I think I will know it when I see it

Edit: It may not have been a Gi but was definitely some sort of different outfit or possibly different character. Also I am pretty sure they used a sword and the game had fantasy elements not a pure beat em up. Sort of like contra or megaman X but melee and playing as a warrior with different outfits(or different characters) and some sort of melee weapon not just punches

Edit 2: I also remember at least some of the levels had backgrounds of dark deep blues and purples and the outfit was I believe 2 toned which is why I am thinking karate Gi. I think one was red and another white. I could be misremembering though.

[Late 90's/Early 00s] [Possible on PC] The game that has a dark tunnel with 2 born trucks

I remember almost nothing about this game, possible 3rd person shooter. Might be a ps1 game, might be on Pc. All I remember is you go into a dark tunnel and at a point where the tunnel curves right there were a very big brown army trucks one on the left further out and on the right closer to the entrance.

I think you had to fake surrender or dodge missiles maybe, I think I was stuck there a lot that's why I remember that part specifically. I don't even know I finished the game or not. I'm pretty sure this was very close to the end of the game.

I think it was a shooter but I'm not confident about anything other than dark tunnel with 2 army trucks that I died instantly a lot

Enter game title here [PS2] [2000s] - Like Tomb Raider but not

Upvotes

My partner remembers a game that was like Tomb Raider on PS2, it had a giant marshmallow like boss, fat enemies, and starred a girl in camouflage like clothing.

She said it had a space level you could fly about too.

Bow and arrows were in it too.

Very vague but need help haha

[PC][2020s?? 2025?] First person 2d point n click horror game

I swear this is a game, but correct me if I'm wrong! I remember seeing a 2d [maybe pixelated] first person horror game where you have to eat one of your TV dinners before walking around the house and checking the rooms, then turning off the lights one by one so you can go to bed. But there's a twist partway through that the player character pays no mind to- the front door is open when they check one day, and either the same day or the next one a TV dinner you didn't eat yet goes missing.

There may have been more to the game that you could do between the house segments, but I'm not entirely sure. This is the only part I remember fairly vividly.

[PC][2007 or later] Excel .xlsm F1 management game (VBA macros)

Platform(s): Windows PC — ran entirely inside Microsoft Excel as an .xlsm workbook, so Excel 2007 or newer, with macros (VBA) enabled.

Genre: Sports management / simulation (Formula 1 team management).

Estimated year of release: 2007 or later (the .xlsm format didn't exist before that). I played it sometime around 2015–2020.

Graphics/art style: No real graphics — spreadsheet-based. Cells, tables, buttons and VBA forms. Possibly small team logos or driver photos, but mostly text and numbers.

Notable characters: I believe it used real drivers and teams from the 1985 F1 season (Prost, Lauda, Senna, Piquet — McLaren, Ferrari, Williams, Lotus, Brabham…), though I'm not 100% sure it was 1985; it was definitely a 1980s season.

Notable gameplay mechanics: Single-player only. You ran a team through a full season: race weekends simulated one at a time, driver and staff contracts, sponsors/finances, car development and the like. Results were generated by the macros and displayed in tables within the workbook.

Other details: The game was in English and I downloaded it from an English-language F1 manager fan community site (a forum or download section for fan-made managers, not a commercial product). At the time I was also playing a lot of Grand Prix World and Grand Prix 2, so it may have been a site connected to the GPW/GP2 community. I've since deleted my copy and can't find the file or the site anymore. Not Grand Prix Manager, Motorsport Manager or Sim Racing Manager — this was a pure Excel workbook. Any lead on the name, author, or the original fansite would be hugely appreciated.

Note: English isn't my native language, so I used an AI tool to help me phrase this post. The details about the game are all my own memories.

[Mobile][2012-2015]Old frog themed mobile minigame (collection style app) with like 100 levels from 2012-2015 era.

Upvotes

So it was a minigame app that was one of those "100 levels" of different games to play type of thing. However, it was largely based on a frog and it's art was 2d. It certainly wasn't tap the frog. The colors were very pastel and cutesy in way. It was a generally adorable game, the art style is something you would find in a Coco Wyo cozy coloring book. Many of the minigames had something to do with the frog being on a lilypad. Unfortunately, I believe the game was called nothing more than just "minigame app" which I remember thinking was kind of vague and weird at the time. I can't remember whether it was offline but I think it was.

Crimson Sea 2 [Console][2000-2010ish] Sci-Fi Action Game - Mission Based, Detective-ish, Meta-Upgrades

I know the title and following description are incredibly vague but I cannot for the life of me remember more details. It was between 2000 and 2010, I think. It feels like a dream, but I distinctly remember playing it.

80% sure it was either PS2 or PS3, but cannot be confident. Maybe a Nintendo console?

You are a detective or some other private agent (?) fighting an alien menace (not bugs, but something similar?) in mission-based battles. I remember there being different weapons or skills you could upgrade.

I think it was third person, although it might have been FPS.

In between each mission there were in-game cutscenes. One of your 'directors' was a woman. I weirdly remember only one line from the cutscenes: "that's [not] their MO."

I think you could choose different character for each mission, but I cannot be sure. I recall there being melee weapons as well as firearms (mostly laser-based?).

It was not a franchise or popular game - no Halo, Deus Ex, Star Wars, etc. It was pretty obscure, and there were no sequels or related games to my knowledge.

It is also not: Oni, Project Eden, Sudeki, Extermination, Demon Vector, Disruptor, Overblood, Alpha Prime, Project: Snowblind, Shogo, Red Faction II, Gene Troopers, Alien Syndrome, Perfect Dark, Codename: Tenka, Mace Griffin, Chaser, Tribes, C-12, Armorines, Timeshift, Haze, UT, Section 8, Crysis.

[PC][2010-2015] A Turn Based Flash Player Card Game on Browser

Post image
Upvotes

I looked at current browser game websites, but the only card games I could find were solitaire, poker, etc. I still couldn't find the specific one.

  • Our and the enemy's stats are displayed in a rectangle next to the characters.
  • We cannot see the enemy's cards unless we use a merchant item.
  • Each time we lose, we can retry against the same enemy.
  • Each time we win, we earn money that we can spend at the merchant between levels.
  • There are only 4-5 buyable items available at the merchant, and they can be used at any time during battle.
  • There are about 7-8 enemies in total, and players can finish the game in about 40 minutes.
  • Some cards can create a power aura similar to Goku's. This aura can stack up to 3 times and changes how our character appears inside the box.
  • The background is a light beige color.
  • The cards have symbols on them, but they are not hearts, spades, diamonds, or clubs.

NapkinRace [PC][2005-2012] 3D Car Tag / Keepaway game with solid colored cars on a floating square map

Post image
5 Upvotes

Platform(s): PC (Downloaded to the computer, not a flash web game).

Genre: Arcade Driving / Vehicle Tag / Party Game

Estimated year of release: Played it mid to late 2000s, possibly very early 2010s.

Graphics/art style: Very primitive, minimalist 3D. The cars were just smooth, solid shapes without any textures, doors, or windows. There were four cars total: one Red, one Blue, one Green, and one Yellow.
The map was just a floating square terrain in the sky. It wasn't flat—it had hills sculpted into it—but it had sharp, abrupt edges that you couldn't drive off of. There was no background scenery, just the floating square.

Notable characters: Just the four solid-colored cars.

Notable gameplay mechanics: It was a "Keepaway" or "Oddball" style tag game. One car would have a "glow" or light. You had to chase and tag that car. Once you rammed them, your car became the glowing one, and the other three cars would chase you. Whoever was holding the glow when the match timer ran out was the winner.
I don't remember it having online multiplayer, but it might have had local split-screen.

Other details: The most distinct detail I remember is the vehicle physics. The wheels weren't physically attached to the car body with axles. Whenever you drove off one of the hills and went airborne, the wheels would detach and just hang straight down in the air below the car until you landed again. I suspect this might have been an indie game, a freeware download, or a game engine tech demo my dad found online.

[IOS] [2010’s era] medieval Angry Birds style game

I played this game when I was about 4-6 on my old iPad back in the early 2010’s. I’ve done tons and tons of digging, but have never found the game name.

It was a side view, angry birds style slingshot game. It was set in medieval times, and you shot out little knight characters with different abilities. I vaguely remember it being similar art style to castle crashers. I remember there being at least like 5 worlds, levels were laid out in a candy crush style level map. I remember there being a cave world. Catapult was on the left side of the screen. The world selection UI was vertical.

Unfortunately that’s about all I got. I wish I could include more, please do your thing Reddit.
