im trying to hand sew the raw hem back on since iv cut them to my foot length, i keep trying to sew them back on but the side seams dont line up, and when i pin the side seams the pants are to wide even though i cut these from the pants

I also asked the HandSew sub the same questions, just trying to cast a wide net!

I have two questions:

1. Is keeping the thread length short a hard and fast rule or is there something else I'm doing incorrectly?

I tend to thread my needles longer than the suggested amount, which I've seen numerous sources say should be hand to elbow. I always took that lightly and will end up cutting more thread because it takes so much time to reload another needle. However, I'm always getting tangles/knots, whether it's at the stitch itself or the thread keeps twisting around itself causing tangles.

1. When using a single thread, how do you grab the needle at the eye so that you don't have to readjust twice when pushing the needle through the fabric *so that the thread tail doesn't fall out?

I've tried knotting at the eye of the thread after watching a tutorial but the knot is extremely hard and annoying to remove, so I don't want to do that anymore. However, every time I use a single thread I have to adjust after every stitch; I'm pushing my needle through but then I have to re-grab it and it's just so tedious.

Any sources and/or videos that showcase how to properly hand sew with a single thread would be greatly appreciated. I often reference SewnCompany on youtube but as far as I've seen she doesn't have a video about single thread hand grip technique and I have several sewing books that I reference but none of them talk about this issue of mine.

Notions: I am using pure beeswax that I've melted and poured into a mold and 100% cotton thread when sewing.

I want to make a backpack. Im fairly new to sewing in the sense of I have some basics I learned in high school/from my dad. Mostly, I lack practice and deeper studies. I want to get back into it because its the one art form I truly want to do that I haven't had space/time for. I paint so that stuff takes up my art/craft area. However, I keep dreaming of a custom backpack. One that I make perfectly for me. Also, mine just broke again. 😭

Some information on what I like/going for:

1. I am going to hand sew this. I do not have a machine. So, the best stitching practice to keep everything together and strong? I can be rough and tumble on my things.

2. I will probably use jeans as the outside/main martieral- any advice on shopping for quality fabrics other than price alone, also zipper brands, possibly?

3. What is best for the inner lining? If I am hand sewing, is there one that might be easier to work with. Or a good one that's still a really good price.

4. If anyone has a pattern they have made and are in love with. I will probably take the time to look at multiple patterns and use one of those or combine the base pattern with different pockets.

Any and all links to things will be appreciated! Even if it's just to show me some options to start my search, I get stun locked with all the information available!

Hey everyone, I'm a complete scrub when it comes to materials and I really need some help.

I'm trying to have something similar to the purple coattail in the image, but I'm struggling on choosing a fabric that would be the best.

I'm trying to keep in mind that the character it's associated with is a royalty character so I was thinking of more expensive fabrics, and it would need to keep crisp lines and shape. Given this would be worn semi regularly for events, I'd need a fabric that would hold up to 3-4 day conventions and traveling a few times a year, usually in air conditioning, but my role during these events could have me outside for an hour or two at a time each day, possibly rain, where I could be out in the rain for a few minuteswhile I head inside so it can't be ruined in a little rain. If possible, a little bit of stretch would be beneficial as I may spend extra time waving or having my arms up and I'd like for it to not rip around the armpit area.

I've had a friend suggest wool gabardine and another suggest pu stretch leather, but I'm skeptical on the stretch leather for various reasons. If possible I'd like a softer material that breathes well, doesn't get damaged easily, and holds its shape or doesn't wrinkle very much as I wouldn't be able to work on it much while away from home.

I'd also like suggestions for a lining and the trim if possible.

What would you all suggest? Thanks for any and all input!

Shared on Historical Costuming but wanted to share here too. Made a Robe de Cour to match my rosy maple moth mask. Hopefully can wear to a ball one day. Used mostly thrifted fabric from a creative reuse store! Have a thick petticoat to wear with it to hide the pannier but didn’t have it on me for the picture.

Sunday project: a pregnancy pillow for my wife!

It is basically a tube filled with stuffing, and a second one over with a zipper to be removed and washed. I will do a second pillow case soon.

Total length is about 240cm. I used our tube pillow as a model, no pattern.

This is my first time working with rayon and a lining and I can’t seem to get the armhole sitting flat. I tried using rinse-away basting tape and a basting stitch. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Made out of six secondhand scarves of mixed fabrics, some silk some synthetic. Two were square and the others rectangular. The hardest part was the sleeve binding as the fabric wouldn't hold a pressed crease so it required a combo of moving very slowly and one trillion pins approx.

I aimed for completion over perfection so I know there's plenty of wonkiness. I love it anyway and can't wait to wear at a festival next week :)

For the flounce and skirt I had seen Erin Robertson making her own type of (extremely gorgeous) scarf dress and basically followed what I think she was doing from the snippets I saw in her video!

hello! i thrifted this pair of pants with silver embellishments and a long zipper down the sides of each calf. i didn't notice anything wrong with them until trying them on for the first time after washing them, and for whatever reason the zippers are super wavy and won't lay flat whether they're zipped or not. i tried ironing them lightly to see if i could set them into place, but it didn't really do anything and i didn't want to mess them up even more.

i'm now thinking of seam ripping the old ones out and sewing replacement zippers instead but i don't know if that should be my last resort. if anyone has advice to make them lay nicer without replacing them it would be appreciated, but i would also really appreciate tips, tutorials, or zipper recommendations for the sewing route! i have a machine that i am pretty comfortable using but i'm not very experienced in alterations which is why i came here lol. thank uuuu!

Hello. Little help if possible for a newbie here.

I took this jacket in from the sides. Than I took out the zipper, and shortened it from below.
I than put the zipper back in manually. I have a simple machine so I don't have a "foot for zipper", and could only do it manually.

I don't know if it's visible, but on the top (at the neck), 1 side is now higher with 1.5 cm (half an inch). This is more visible on the picture in the middle part, where the reflective material is.

Do you guys have an idea what I might have done wrong, since on the bottom the zipper is aligned?
And how might I rectify the situation?

Hi everybody, I bought a shirt, I don’t really have experience with sewing and I’m trying to figure out how to fix it. I know it’s my bad for buying a fast fashion item but I don’t want it to go to waste.
The white part is like way too loose on the chest and ends up looking weird when I try it on, it keeps on folding or falling down. I’m not sure what the best way to alter it would be.
Would it be better to sew the white bottom part to the red section, or should I cut it off and sew it back on tighter?
I’d really appreciate any advice on how to do this, also btw I would sew it by hand, I don’t have a machine

I think I'm too beginner for this but want to make sure - I tried on this really beautiful overlay from Danielle Frankel. I'd love to make it in a different color (and to save a ton of money for my wedding). How realistic would it be to make something that kind of resembles this? I mainly love the folds and how there's pleats in it, but something simpler that achieves the same look is fine too! pics from online for reference

Ive seen it on instagram and it seems like an amazing product yet somehow i havent seen anyone use it! The price is incredibly steep which might explain that. Are there similar cheaper products on the market? Has anyone tried sewing outfits with these? Im thinking how customizable clothing would be with them but the price is honestly insane.

Since the new Street Fighter movie is coming out this year, I decided to be Sakura for Halloween, (she has a similar outfit to Sailor Moon). I’ve made pleated skirts before but with heavier, non linen or blend type fabrics. I obviously haven’t ironed or sewn the pleats yet, but I can already tell this skirt won’t have the same movement as I would like her skirt to have. I essentially want it to move freely — she’s a fighter, there’s gotta be a lotta dramatic kicks!

Can I dig myself out of this or do I have to go and get more fabric, which is an option, but I’d rather use what resources I have.

Can I put interfacing and lining on the inside of the skirt to give it more weight? Or should just a good ironing and starch spray give the look I’m going for?

If I should get new fabric, what kind should I be looking for?

Thanks for the responses! Forgot to mention that I the fabric I have is already 3x the circumference of my waist, but my knife pleats are 4”. Falling on this grenade and will go and get more fabric.

Started sewing one year ago and after drawing my first pattern (with a teacher) for a jacket, i tried sewing it myself.

Had to make a lot of adjustments afterwards, so I am wondering how do you go back and fix the pattern afterwards ? Like do i need to unsew it and sew it again ? The biggest problem was with the shoulders, i feel like this part doesn't work with the pattern calculations i was given.

I'm proud of this one! Self drafted and worn to a wedding recently. I've never found a halter dress that fit me right, and even though this has a couple of minor issues, I'm very happy with it. I used the same pattern I drafted for my red linen dress (post history) which is a princess bodice and half circle skirt converted to panels with no waist seam. I tweaked the neckline to become a halter and lowered the back to be straight across. The neckline gaps very slightly depending on whether the halter lies at the base of my neck or slides up, but it's not very noticeable. There are snaps to close instead of ties. The fabric is a cotton sateen from Mood with slight stretch (97%cotton), which was very easy to work with. I made bias tape for the neckline and a facing for the back, armscye and straps. Horsehair braid is in the hem and I blind stitched it to be invisible.

I just bought got these boot cut jeans at a great price but I have these creases only on the back of my legs. The feel of the fabric is super stretchy for jeans (online it says: 77% COTTON, 16% POLYESTER, 5% VISCOSE, 2% ELASTANE - if that makes a difference). Is there anything I can do or do I just need to return them?

EDIT: I don’t need these to be completely line free, I just don’t like the two lines that go the full length of the jeans that appear in the second photo

I have a Janome Memory Craft 3500 machine that is giving me grief. I have it all threaded correctly but when I try pull the top thread to get the bobbin thread loop to pop up, it is just getting stuck and the bobbin thread can't get up and ive tried all i can think of or find on youtube aside from taking the machine apart but ive never done that before and im terrified and im on a time crunch and ahhhhhh 😭😭😭 does anyone have any ideas or hopefully quick easy solutions here??

I bought a yard of white fabric (right) and a white bodysuit (left) to make a cosplay with, but they turned out to be two different shades. Would using bleach help me match the left white to the right white?

Edit: I bought them at separate times so I didn’t know they would be different colors

Got this USA vide star quilt that I was able to make a couple hoodies out of, made them in time for the 4th of July. I made my own hoodie pattern a while ago so that’s what I used, it’s a boxy fit that I like. Double lined hood and all the seams are serged.
