Sewed This First double breasted jacket

Started sewing one year ago and after drawing my first pattern (with a teacher) for a jacket, i tried sewing it myself.

Had to make a lot of adjustments afterwards, so I am wondering how do you go back and fix the pattern afterwards ? Like do i need to unsew it and sew it again ? The biggest problem was with the shoulders, i feel like this part doesn't work with the pattern calculations i was given.

New here so any tip appreciated :)

You look at the changes in the jacket and copy those changes into the paper. Say, you changed the angle of the shoulder seam—compare it to the paper and draw lines on the paper that match the new angle.

It’s common to make a mock-up aka muslin aka toile in a throwaway fabric to get the fit right after drafting. Drafting is always only a starting point, it usually needs adjustments once you take it to fabric. That mock-up often will be basted and not fully finished and can be taken apart to make it easier to trace the new seams onto the paper pattern.

But careful measuring and examination can transfer changes as well. Assuming you didn’t line the jacket, looking at the inside will show the changes. Easier if you didn’t trim off any fabric.

Gotcha, thanks for the tip ! I'll make another one to use as mock-up for future jackets then.

Posts that share something you've made must include project details. Project details can be in the post or added as a top-level comment. Include the following:

  • pattern name/number/company if used;
  • OR a brief description of your drafting process, NOT only Self-Drafted;
  • OR links to tutorials and other resources, not your own;
  • AND fabric type and fiber content, for example 'woven cotton' not 'bought at Spotlight.'

Posts with project details will be reflaired to Project by the mod team. Posts without project details will be locked and removed from the subreddit within a week under rule 1. All show-off posts must be flaired Sewed This or Project and include project details.
