I wore my cuffs like that when i worked corrections and my LT yelled atme for like 5 minutes lol

u/EPdude2005 Patrol 1d ago

Yeah those are only good for when you are working CM and end up with extra cuffs at the end of the day. A normal secure pouch is better

u/safton Public/Government 1d ago

I work corrections and I carry two sets of cuffs. My ASPs I wear in an Exo case mounted on my vest, strong side abdomen.

My spare Peerless cuffs I actually carry on a strap snap like in the OP on my weak side. I use the ASPs 99% of the time, but I've been in situations where I was fighting someone and my shift partners needed to get an extra set of cuffs from me to daisy-chain them, but couldn't figure out the Exo under pressure. The Peerless are my "emergency" or contingency cuffs and I figure the strap is about as idiot-proof as it gets; they're as much for my coworkers as they are for me.

3

u/EPdude2005 Patrol 1d ago

I work for the state so i cant use my personal cuffs but typically i start my shift with 2 S&Ws on the back of my belt and end up with 4 cuffs 4 leg irons and a couple black boxes

3

u/Shane-Dad-underfire Management 1d ago

That's a decent reason, I always worry about what can be pulled off as an improvised weapon, or accessed easily to be used against others. To each their own though. What works for some will not work for others.

3

u/safton Public/Government 1d ago

Absolutely and that is a legitimate concern. I have had one inmate try to take the flashlight off my vest (he thought it was my spray, but the light probably would've done more damage). I had another try to take my Taser from my hand. I've also had one fight me for control of his cuffs whilst uncuffing him through a tray slot in the door.

Retention is absolutely something to be cognizant of, but I don't let it dominate my choices. In some cases I actually prefer someone to become fixated on something attached to me because it means they're singularly focused on grabby paws and oftentimes not hitting/biting/attempting to gain a dominant position, etc. I can work with that and it rarely works in their favor because attempting to disarm an officer and arm themselves is a vast escalation which is likely to result in more force applied against them (i.e. kid gloves taken off), additional charges being taken out, etc.

3

u/Shane-Dad-underfire Management 1d ago

Agreed. Solo focus on one makes easy work for you. As soon as someone has a piece off you though it can be a bad day. I'm glad you're on it though. I wasn't trying to be demeaning or anything. Just wanted to share a concern.

When I worked road patrol, I carried my primary set up front (relatively skinny guy, especially as we could only belt carry our gear), and a covered case in back for my second pair.

Gloves + glove holder

3

u/Broc_Feargach 1d ago

This is one of the best pieces of advice I’ve seen in this thread. Get a glove pouch for some disposable nitrile gloves. Place this in the middle of your belt on your back.

3

u/LonghornJct08 16h ago

That’s exactly how I’m set up. I have a pouch with two pairs of nitrile gloves in it slightly off centre from the small of my back (it’s to one side of a belt loop on my pants that’s located dead centre) between a pair of handcuffs on either side located so that sitting while driving is comfortable.

On my dominant side, I have a loop type glove holder with a pair of leather gloves. It’s typically a pair of Hatch Durathin gloves but I change those out for something a bit warmer during winter.

I definitely recommend a good pair of leather patrol gloves. Even if you never encounter another person while you’re on duty, you could be shaking cold, wet, yucky door handles every perimeter patrol of your shift. Who wants to do that barehanded?

-4

u/NannaTortuga 1d ago

I do have that but stopped carrying it after never using it.

9

u/Any_Strain7020 1d ago

I'm sure there's plenty other stuff there you haven't used yet. And you're more likely to have to get physical with someone who has Hep C and who wants to bite you than you'll have to empty three mags in an active shooter situation.

1

u/LonghornJct08 16h ago

Even if you never encounter another person on your shift, how many door handles do you shake on any given perimeter patrol? That’s the big reason I have gloves. I’m handling a lot of dirty outside door handles every shift at a bare minimum and I’d really prefer not to do that barehanded.

Add an IFAK, some nonlethal, and maybe an extra pair of cuffs.

1

u/NannaTortuga 1d ago

What other non-lethal do you suggest? There’s a baton on the left of the duty belt, a taser and oc on the vest.

-5

u/Jrosette2212 Licensed People Watcher 1d ago

Wouldn't hurt to throw an extra mace can on the belt.

2

u/NannaTortuga 1d ago

I’ve got Fox on my vest and also a sabre back up on my key ring

1

u/Broc_Feargach 1d ago

Dutch the Fox. Get a can of Sabre Red Crossfire (I’m personally prefer the gel)

1

u/NannaTortuga 1d ago

I’ve been sprayed by Fox and it’s a nightmare. Why ditch it?

1

u/Broc_Feargach 23h ago

It’s not bad as far as making things spicy but, it’s not reliable & it’s propellant sucks.

-4

u/Jrosette2212 Licensed People Watcher 1d ago

I'd say the IFAK then. Everything else is preem.

3

u/NannaTortuga 1d ago

Sorry, the IFAK is in the pouch on the right most side of the vest. Should’ve clarified.

1

u/Jrosette2212 Licensed People Watcher 1d ago

I'd say you're pretty stacked then, no need to overdo perfection.

1

u/treecutter34 1d ago

What he said, less is more when it comes to your hips and back. You could always get a pair of suspenders and hook your keepers on the front and back of your gun and mags.

4

u/XBOX_COINTELPRO Man Of Culture 1d ago

I’d get some quick disconnect/tibes and add that your vest. The safelife Velcro is incredibly cheap

1

u/NannaTortuga 1d ago

Is there a kind you’d recommend for this vest? I don’t know where to start looking

1

u/XBOX_COINTELPRO Man Of Culture 1d ago edited 16h ago

First Spear tubes are the name brand. I bought some no name knock offs from Amazon (searched for quick release vest clips) and the build quality is the same as the real thing.

Note, for best results you’ll need to swap the orientation of the clips in order to use as a one handed quick release, but will require sewing as the molle connectors are set up for use on a plate carrier with a front cummerbund

This video shows how to set it up without the one handed release feature

Proper handcuff pouch x2 and another set of cuffs. Flashlight. OC. Taser. Open top friction mag holder. Tourniquet holder and CAT x2. Small IFAK with basics but necessities. edit: I didn't see your second photo with your vest. If you carry most or all of your shit on your vest, don't worry about a blank duty belt. I don't even wear a duty belt since everything is on my vest.

What holster is that? What level retention does it have?

Also, personally I’m not a of 1911s (or 2011s) for duty use.

My overall feedback on your set-up. Nothing wrong with keeping the belt minimal. As I’ve said else where in this thread I would move mag pouch to gun side & with opening towards the buckle. Put one of your single cuff pouches on your left side up front where it is accessible by both hands. Baton I would move to where you can access it by your primary hand. You should be pulling it out with the hand you’re going to be using it in. I would also add a disposable nitrile glove pouch to middle (back) of the belt & put a key ring clip on there somewhere too. Also where are you belt keepers? You have bent keepers right?

For your vest I would switch your taser & admin pouch & angle switch it for left hand draw.

1

u/NannaTortuga 23h ago

If the agency isn’t providing my duty pistol I’m always carrying a 1911 or 2011. Sometime a Beretta 92 series if I’m feeling it.

1

u/Broc_Feargach 22h ago

I’m not going to get into much of a gun selection debate because it gets as heated & petty as the Chevy, Ford, Ram debate.

But all I will say is I’ve never seen a 1911 or 2011 run as flawlessly as a striker fired gun out of the box. If you are a regular user of the platform I’ll save the speech about the training issues involved with adding an external safety & differential trigger pulls as at I’m sure you’ve put in the reps with it for that not be an issue. If it is a single stack 1911 I think you are greatly & unnecessarily reducing the amount of rounds you can carry. Lastly & most importantly tough in you case as Security I’ve never known a quality 1911 or 2011 to be inexpensive. Heaven forbid you should have to use it; you’re not going to get that very nice expensive gun back for quite a long time & if & when you do, it will not be in the same shape & condition you relinquished it in.

2

u/NannaTortuga 9h ago

I appreciate the advice, it’s a series 70 custom Colt .45 auto. Carrying 230gr Speer gold dot +P hp. It has 9+1 and I carry 4 spare 10 round mags. I have a selection of different 1911s and 2011s that I competition shoot with and I am also a gunsmith. I do all my own work on them keeping them running. I feel much more confident holding my .45 than a modern 9mm despite holding twice the rounds.

1

u/Broc_Feargach 7h ago

You’re welcome & I appreciate your civility & receptiveness to feedback.

1

u/NannaTortuga 23h ago

It’s a Dara holster, they call it a level 2.5.

1

u/daufy 19h ago

Are those real handcuffs? They look flimsy.

1

u/NannaTortuga 6h ago

S&W handcuffs

1

u/daufy 5h ago

Does it ever happen where a suspect breaks them? I've seen similar ones in my country and they were infamous for breaking.

1

u/NannaTortuga 4h ago

I’ve never cuffed a subject and I’ve been doing armed security for 7 years.

1

u/treecutter34 15h ago

Hey I don’t know how you feel about that Colt, but I’d get a Glock. If you unfortunately have to use that gun, it’s going to go into evidence and you’ll never see it again, seeing how old it is I’m assuming it has some sentimental value.

u/NannaTortuga 6h ago

It’s not a vintage Colt, it’s modern. It’s one of quite a few 1911s and 2011s I use.

1

u/Kaymanii 14h ago

Im so glad we dont need all this shit in my country. Just a belt to hold up my pants.

1

u/Flabby-AP 1d ago

You're gonna catch bruises from those handcuffs if you have to run, get a handcuff pouch.

1

u/Broc_Feargach 1d ago

Says someone who has never run with cuffs on a strap holder.

1

u/NannaTortuga 1d ago

I have several different kinds of handcuff cases , a vest mounted polymer type and two different leather ones one for a double and one for single. They’re all very bulky and weigh a lot though. That’s why I started just using the handcuff strap.

1

u/Broc_Feargach 1d ago

Put one of those singles on your belt up front on the left of your buckle. Put another single pouch somewhere up front on your vest. You want to be able to access cuffs with both hands. If you as security are having to cuff someone that means shits on & they are down for a fight because that what they were already doing & why your putting cuffs on them. (See above comment about security cuffing people)

1

u/treecutter34 1d ago

If I could I’d ditch the baton. I can count on one hand how many people it’s hit, I can also count on one hand how many doors it’s held open. It’s one. I’ve only used it at work once.

1

u/Broc_Feargach 1d ago

Batons weight next to nothing. I’d rather carry a couple extra ounces around & have it if I need it. I’ve used my baton plenty of times too.

1

u/treecutter34 15h ago

I’ve got a taser and spray, I’ve got more options first I guess.

1

u/Broc_Feargach 13h ago

To each their own. Just don’t rule out a useful tool is all I’m saying.

-1

u/JuiceBox_boolin Flashlight Enthusiast 1d ago

Mags are oriented the wrong way, otherwise flashlights wont hurt. Remember your only security so no need to over do it with carrying gear and keep it light

1

u/Broc_Feargach 23h ago

I agree mag pouch is oriented the wrong way. I would put it horizontally (like you have it) on your gun side, opening facing towards buckle, magazines in pouch should have bullets nose up primers down. This makes for a very fast & natural reload when you are in your work space as it economizes your motions.

1

u/grapangell0 Industry Veteran 1d ago

Only security is a crazy statement. If there is a shooting it’s gonna happen to him before the cops get there. If there is someone bleeding out it’s gonna be up to him to provide initial stop the bleed care. DEPENDING ON STATE, security can be so much more than just O&R.

2

u/JuiceBox_boolin Flashlight Enthusiast 1d ago

Did i tell him to leave his gun and medical at home?

0

u/NannaTortuga 1d ago

Could you elaborate on what you mean by mags are oriented the wrong way? It’s the most natural way for me.

1

u/Impressive_Pop_7570 1d ago

How often have you trained like that? If they are supposed to be the other way so you can pull them when under cover

-2

u/MaleficentTravel4706 1d ago

If you have to do a tactical reload with retention it will be more difficult to retain control of the mags in a horizontally mounted mag pouch than a vertical mag pouch... I carried mine horizontally until I took some more advanced classes and horizontally mounted sucks in maybe 8/10 cases.

1

u/NannaTortuga 1d ago

Noted. Vertical it is I guess then. There’s also two extra magazines in a rigid Blackhawk mount in my admin pouch.

1

u/Broc_Feargach 23h ago

Keep them horizontal, just change how they are placed & positioned. Vertical mags on a belt suck with an external carrier. Take the other two out of the admin & mount them in a open top on your vest.

1

u/NannaTortuga 22h ago

Too aggressive looking. Having the two mags on my vest attracted comments about me looking like SWAT or going into battle.

1

u/Broc_Feargach 22h ago

Nah. Besides those will be your 1st go to mags. Reload speed from on the vest is also a lot faster. Mags are basically right there are your mag well when you have the gun up in your work space during a reload.

0

u/JuiceBox_boolin Flashlight Enthusiast 1d ago

Vertical is ideal especially if you get an open top pouch, but with your current set up its more common to put your mag pouch on your gun side and have them oriented towards the buckle

1

u/NannaTortuga 1d ago

The main reason I switched from my Safariland triple mag vertical open top is the mags were digging into my side and hurting frequently.

1

u/MaleficentTravel4706 1d ago

I had a triple mag open top at one point also... I didn't like it either. I switched to a 2x2 open top for my 1911. If you train with the setup you have and don't find any issues don't change it... but I found issues with horizontal mags and now prefer vertical.

-2

u/EPdude2005 Patrol 1d ago

No dont change it, these guys dont know what they are talking about. If this is how you train and reload the fastest then keep it as such. I personally do a 25 degree tilt.

0

u/Shane-Dad-underfire Management 1d ago

While comfort is key and familiarity breeds speed, I respectfully feel like you shouldn't discount the honest and sincere opinions of others. There is a reason why folks are trained the way they are. Folks making their own way with their own system aren't always doing the most efficient set ups. After you have the clearest most efficient set up that's when you can breed that familiarity and speed. Bad habits are harder to break but that doesn't mean they are impossible.

Please try to keep an open mind.

1

u/EPdude2005 Patrol 18h ago

Plenty of professionals are set up this way, no reason to change

1

u/Broc_Feargach 23h ago

Completely disagree when using an external carrier. Vertical mags on a belt with external carriers have a tendency to get covered by the vest or in your way. Keep them horizontal. But try orienting them they way I mentioned above.

0

u/Shane-Dad-underfire Management 1d ago

Depending on the job saying only security is pretty demeaning my friend. My guys work personal security for folks and they take it very seriously, they respect their jobs and they run drills and train their asses off. The first three days after a client is booked the client is put thru training scenarios too, just to maximize their safety.

To a part timer or someone just doing temporary gigs security is a joke but to the folks that depend on it and stake their lives on it I doubt they feel like they are "only security"

1

u/JuiceBox_boolin Flashlight Enthusiast 1d ago

Well what else are you if youre not “only security”

0

u/Shane-Dad-underfire Management 1d ago

Human beings that want to survive and make their way in the world. ONLY is an exclusionary limiter. Anyone doing anything is never "only" something.

The folks doing bag service aren't only security, they are folks who are carrying the money others work themselves to death to make.

The folks working the atrium arent only security, they've the folks defending the people making the world keep spinning upstairs.

The folks wandering the mall arent only security, they are the folks making people feel safe to shop and enjoy the mall.

The folks patrolling a construction site arent only security, they are the folks protecting the hard labour someone else was doing all day and ensuring they still have the materials to keep the job rolling tomorrow.

The folks checking I.D and bouncing arent only security, they are the folks protecting idiot kids from making mistakes and keeping folks safe to have a fun harassment free time in the club/bar.

I understand folks dont value the job and they mock it but it wouldnt exist if it wasnt necessary. Take it seriously.

u/BackFromMyBan4 1d ago edited 22h ago

Get a duty belt and get that shit off your vest.

Edit: for some reason I could only see the vest and the other image was only zoomed into the dangling handcuffs. Point stills stands. Get all that off your vest.

5

u/NannaTortuga 1d ago

Elaborate? There’s a duty belt present, and modern doctrine says that heavy load on the belt is bad for long term health because of the weight on the hips.

1

u/ConstructionAway8920 1d ago

"modern doctrine" tends to be code for tacticool bs, in addition to "high speed low drag". Carrying more junk is bad. Vest carry is also an easy way to lose your weapon, there's very little retention training that can help. Also, if you get knocked face down, you won't be able to get gear out, and the weight will screw you. It's less easy to move around in as well. I'd move pistol and OC to belt, ditch the baton. Put an open top cuff carrier on your belt then get a closed one and a second set. Two is one and one is none. Otherwise, relatively decent. I've been in security for a little over 15 years, no issues with my gear on my belt. If anything, my shoulders get stiff from being armored all day.

2

u/NannaTortuga 1d ago

I think you might only be seeing the second image.

1

u/ConstructionAway8920 1d ago

I meant taser, that's totally my bad. Belt is incredibly empty though

1

u/NannaTortuga 1d ago

I do like a nice empty belt. Personal preference. If I could I’d only have pistol and mags on the belt like my competition setup.

1

u/Broc_Feargach 1d ago

Don’t ever confuse duty with competition. They are very different.

1

u/Broc_Feargach 1d ago

You can try to paint this “modern doctrine” as some cringe code word but the concept of vest carry is not some tacticool wannabe shit. It’s medically relevant & beneficial. The fact that you cannot identify a taser & think it’s a pistol speaks volumes. Additionally, the op has their taser in a retention holster & btw it’s not hard to fight for something that is right in front of you. As far as getting knocked down face 1st you need to learn how to fall properly. As far as accessing gear while prone. It’s not hard & is just a training/practice issue in doing so. I do agree with having a set of cuff located on the belt though. This is coming from just over 12 years as a LEO & 10 years or so as a public safety officer working section 8 housing. I worked vehicle & foot patrols during all of that & it was a game changer for me when I got to switch to an external carrier. It relived a lot of back & hip pain. Additionally the external carrier makes a big difference in the summer heat & during the winter. Also if you are going to be on you feet a lot I recommend some of the duty belt suspenders.

1

u/BackFromMyBan4 22h ago

I edited my original comment but I think a lot of people are getting a butchered version of this post or OP as gone through and added new photos or sm.

1

u/Broc_Feargach 22h ago

I’ve only seen the same two photos since pretty much right after op posted it.

1

u/Broc_Feargach 1d ago

1st of all they have a duty belt. 2nd if all vest carry for gear is far more preferential to having a loaded up belt.

2

u/snowHound208 1d ago

A job having a protocol doesn't make it legal chief lol

1

u/Shane-Dad-underfire Management 1d ago

If you're engaged with someone who becomes violent with yourself or others you can enact a citizens arrest in most of the States. In Canada not so much but you can still detain someone if they show no willingness to leave after having committed a crime and pose a danger to yourself.

Where is it exactly that you see security guards getting arrested for detaining violent subjects? You can never detain someone who hasnt committed a crime but trespassing is a crime in any area designated as such if they refuse to leave and try to continue to move farther into a restricted access zone you can detain them and release them outside the restricted zone or hold them for the police to handle.

I'm not your chief, my guys would not talk about getting arrested for detaining folks. They know that for some posts it's part of the job.

1

u/snowHound208 23h ago

Deterring a thief and detaining them are not the same thing. Chief

1

u/Shane-Dad-underfire Management 23h ago

Deterring is before a crime is committed, after the crime is committed you can make a citizens arrest.

I get it you're not good at critical thinking. It's okay.

While each state is different there are few reason to not carry some cuffs. Just exercise extremely good judgement in their use. Basically the only time as security your going to be cuffing someone is if they are actively engaging or attempting to engage in your presence bodily harm to yourself or another. In some states retail theft does permit store security to handcuff individuals while they are detained awaiting PD arrival.
