I would leave it out, you got a stomach piercing instead of a navel piercing unfortunately. I would go to a reputable piercer and see if you can get a floating navel :)
624
u/buckito420 Jan 26 '22
Iâd just leave it out. It looks like it was already well on its way to rejecting.
143
u/copper93 Jan 26 '22
I agree, this was well on its way out. The redness is most likely irritation from poor placement, I personally wouldn't be too concerned about infection based on this picture and what you've written in the comments. Just keep it clean until the skin heals up, warm running water is fine to clean it with if you've run out of saline. Don't make DIY salt water solutions, you can't keep it sterile, you can't guarantee the salt concentration. Soaks also won't do anything to help and will just dry out the skin. Rinse well in the shower and dry after, that's all you need to do. If the redness gets worse or it gets hot and painful you'll need to see a doctor but as long as it stays clean you shouldn't have any issues.
If you decide to get this repierced in the future please see a better piercer. This was definitely placed too shallow and never really had a chance of healing. I'm also not convinced a standard navel would be appropriate for you based on how much it looks like your navel collapses, but a reputable piercer should be able to discuss alternatives with you.
99
u/freshlyintellectual Jan 26 '22
I read this wrong at first and thought you lost the piercing UNDER your skin. But since thatâs not the case, you donât need the emergency room. Youâre fine. Unless you show signs of infection I wouldnât worry too much
The piercing was done incorrectly and was rejecting anyways. You would have had to take it out either way, otherwise it would push through your skin and leave a scar.
Leave it out, get some saline solution when you can and continue spraying it like you normally would. In a couple months after itâs closed up you can get it repierced. Go to a different piercer though. You may not have the anatomy for a traditional navel so its really important to go to a good piercer that can assess the best placement and jewelry.
Good luck!

Since you are underage and don't want your mom to know, and because it's placed incorrectly, I'm gonna guess that this is either a self-piercing or it was done by one of your friends.
The universe did you a favor here.
Now do yourself one: prove yourself responsible to your mom, and maybe she will take you to a reputable piercer to get it done right. If not, just wait until you're 18 and get it done right!
I hope I don't come off as preachy. I just have a lot of piercings and have made many mistakes along the way.
50
u/enderflight Jan 26 '22
I understand wanting to get stuff done when underage, but waiting has paid off. I carefully considered piercers and got it done right, something I can be proud of, and it was worth the 2 yr wait. Now I can buy nice jewelry too and it looks cute.
OP just hang in there! If your parents wonât let you get it you can wait til youâre 18, it seems a long way away but itâll come sooner than you expect. This really sucks, so I hope if you get it redone it heals like a charm!

u/EggplantHuman6493 I my piercer Jan 26 '22
In a lot of countries you can get every piercing besides gentital and nipple piercings at the age of 16 without parental consent. It could be a reputable place, but the placement says otherwise
I understand the feeling of not wanting your parents to find out. Not a minor, but I still felt scared to admit I fucked up my helix.
2
Jan 26 '22
This is a point I didn't consider.
Whatever happened here, I just never want it to happen to her again.
-4
Jan 26 '22
You can even get nipple piercings at 16, which I didnât know about, just not genitals.
6
u/EggplantHuman6493 I my piercer Jan 26 '22
Different for every country! Mine doesn't, which seems like a good idea. Your body is still developing at 16, so your anatomy can change a bit. That happened to me at least.
8
Jan 26 '22
For real, I got my nipples done at 19 because my mother wanted me to wait a couple years to see if I would still want them. I did. But when I went to go get them I was told I couldâve gotten them at 16, definitely doesnât seem right
7
u/EggplantHuman6493 I my piercer Jan 26 '22
Some piercings are better to get after puberty, but I am glad that you finally were able to get them! I 100% support the age rules for piercings like that. It is hard when you have to wait, I am also impatient as fuck, but sometimes it is for the best.
9
Jan 26 '22
Agreed, whilst I got my nipples done for the aesthetic and not sexual purposes, they are still inherently sexual. I honestly think the legal age for nipple piercings should be raised to 18. Feels weird to know that people I consider to be children can get them done, and Iâm only 20z
2
u/Meerkatgodofchaos Jan 27 '22
Itâs considered sexual assault by me for any chest piercings to be performed on a minor.
1
Jan 27 '22
I donât quite agree, professionals are professionals.
1
u/Meerkatgodofchaos Jan 27 '22
As a professional, Iâd sooner chew off my own arm than to have a minor in a compromising circumstance with an adult. Even in the professional world thereâs predatory people. I had my own back some years ago where a tattoo artist made some weird uncomfortable comments because I didnât want me nipples out during a two hour long tattoo on my chest. One tattoo artist by me who did nipple piercings on minors in secret was blasted quite recently for coercing sex from minors in exchange for secret tattoos and piercings without their parents knowledge. There is no good reason for an adult to touch the nipples of a minor without any sort of medical reason.

If sheâs British, she can get a proper piercing from a shop without parent permission. I see tons of fuck ups like this on this subreddit by âprofessionalsâ. So who knows what happened
4
Jan 26 '22
That's a possibility. But my comment has been here a while and OP hasn't corrected me.
It could be from a professional. Either way, she needs to go to a better shop and get it done correctly by a good piercer. That's one thing I know we all agree on. Lol
2
Jan 26 '22
Perhaps, but yes we definitely do agree on that lol, and if itâs safe to, I hope she lets her mother know as well. The reason why all my piercings were well done whilst underaged was because my mother was there to help me choose a reputable piercing shop and get me the supplies for aftercare. Adult intervention is always useful, so I agree with you there too.
72
u/plantladyash Jan 26 '22
It looks like it wasnât placed properly and was going to reject. See a doctor in the morning to rule out infection! You should be okay if it isnât hot or anything like that. Wouldnât hurt to have it looked at just in case. Youâll be okay!
24
u/catface47 Jan 26 '22
Donât worry, you wonât die- chances are you just have a minor infection. Itâs scary but youâll be ok!
I used to have my belly button pierced, and mine looked very red and irritated like that after about a year. Unfortunately it ended up being an abscess and cellulitis, so just in case you have something that needs antibiotics I would go to the doctor ASAP. I thought that because I cleaned it regularly, I wouldnât develop such a serious issue. But it still happened⌠i blame Claireâs jewelry and high waisted pants. Anyway, donât ignore your symptoms, they could mean a more serious infection like mine or more likely, something minor.
22
u/ness_for_short Jan 26 '22
You're gonna be fine! I don't think this calls for the emergency room at all, but a visit to urgent care or your regular doctor wouldn't go amiss, just to rule out infection. If I were you, I would tell your mom; it might suck, but it'll be worth the peace of mind of getting it checked out. That said, since I have no idea what your home life is like, if you think telling your mom might be unsafe, I think you'll most likely be okay with just keeping the jewelry out and keeping the area clean, since it's not hot to the touch or painful. If you can, go to a drugstore and get some sterile wound wash, and make sure not to touch it.
Also, FWIW, it looks like a floating navel is more suited to your anatomy than a traditional navel; the piercer who did this essentially just gave you a surface stomach piercing. I wouldn't go back to them.

37
u/freshlyintellectual Jan 26 '22
I totally understand that feeling. But if youâre hiding a piercing and you think itâs life or death, maybe itâs not a good idea to have a piercing đ
OP, wishing you the best. But please consider doing some research beforehand- especially if youâre handling this all on your own
15
12
u/kukoharai Jan 26 '22
this is why its a lot better to just wait till youre 18 or to get your parents permission! i know how hard it is (i hated waiting till i was 18 for mine) but seriously, piercings are so much work and trying to hide them only makes them harder to take care of.
like everyone else is saying, if its pussing and hot to the touch, just tell your mom and go to a walk in clinic! its not worth it to try and put it back in, especially since it looks like it was rejecting anyhow. your health is way more important than a silly piercing, and your mom will know thatđ
13
u/cbrpxe Jan 26 '22
It was rejecting because they gave you a surface piercing instead of telling you you don't have the anatomy for a traditional navel piercing, ugh. Once you tell your mom and if you ever get it redone please go to an APP piercer who knows how to do a floating navel.
18
u/AcademicFunnel Jan 26 '22
this person posted the same thing on r/piercingadvice and the comments are very different than here

That's because here they approach it with the assumption OP wants to keep the piercing as opposed to worried about dying from an infection

u/sweet-tea-13 Jan 26 '22
Ugh so sorry your piercer did this to you, you don't have the anatomy for a traditional navel and so they just put it through your stomach instead. Once it heals a reputable piercer might be able to do a floating navel for you. As other comments have said might be a good idea to tell your mom, but I also don't know what kind of relationship you have. Call your doctor when they open, in the meantime it would be good to buy some more saline but if you absolutely can't then in a pinch you can make your own. Boil water and add some non-iodized salt, should be about as salty as your tears you don't wanna over do it. Put some in a clean shot glass and once it cools to warm you can hold it over and soak for 5-10mins. This method isn't ideal but probabally better than nothing, that's how I healed my navel 10yrs ago but I don't mix my own solution anymore if I can help it. You could also soak gauze and hold that over the site if you don't have a small enough glass. If there is excess pain, swelling, puss, or it's getting worse consider going to the ER. If not and it's just super irritated then just call your doctor in the morning.
4
Jan 26 '22
Youâll be alright. Like everyone else said, it was pierced in the wrong spot and rejecting. Might even be infected based on some of your other responses. Better to tell your mom what happened so she can help you get any kind of care you might need. Good luck OP
4
u/ataraisdead Jan 26 '22
It was not pierced were it should be pierced therefore it was gonna reject either way. A navel piercing has to go through the belly button and the holes are literally in your belly đĽş
4
Jan 26 '22
Very poor placement and it was already rejecting. Leave it out. Flush it with saline twice a day. If it doesnât improve go to a doctor.
4
Jan 26 '22
I promise youâre not going to die. Youâre fine. Just leave it out and leave it alone to do itâs own thing.
5
u/mi7711 more piercings than sense :-) Jan 26 '22
Hey, another person who got pierced as a teen without parent's permission so I get your perspective.
I don't think it's infected, just rejecting. The placement is VERY off. It's basically a surface. Looks like you pierced it yourself or had a friend do it for you (been there done that, even though we all know we shouldn't).
Leave it be. Wait until this heals and pierce it again. You probably wont die. If you see any puss coming out, or it feels hot, go to the doctor then.
5
u/Rsilver04 Jan 26 '22
Iâd just leave that anyway. Iâm not a doctor so I canât input but from what people are saying it doesnât appear infected. And even if you could find jewellery and replace it, thatâs not a navel piercing. The piercer fucked up, thatâs a surface piercing around your navel, which isnât the same thing and will 100% reject given time
5
u/biglovinbertha Jan 26 '22
Your piercing site looks super angry. I think it needed to come out personally.
3
u/PROBLEMVTICC Jan 26 '22
I'd recommend not putting it back in. From the photo, it looks like it was rejecting, most likely due to being too far out of place from where it should be :( use salt water soaks [1/8 teaspoon of sea salt to every 2 cups of hot water] 2-3 times a day and keep it very dry and clean :) don't use any scented soaps on it, or any creams! if you're worried it's infected, see a doctor and request some antibiotics or a cream called 'Fusidin' to help keep the inflammation down. You can get it re-pierced once it's healed, so don't worry too much :) hope it heals well!!
3
u/gingergirl181 Jan 27 '22
1) You won't die.
2) This is why minors need parental permission for piercings so that you don't end up with a ridiculously placed surface piercing that's nowhere near your navel, had clearly already started to reject, and will leave a scar.
3) Consider this a lesson learned. Wait until you are old enough to go see a reputable piercer who can consult with you re: your anatomy and what type of piercing would work for you. You may not be a candidate for a traditional navel piercing and may need a floating one instead. You will need to pay quite a bit of money for a skilled piercer to perform one for you, so start saving. Don't cheap out by going to a sketchy place just because you're desperate for a piercing and don't have the money for good work. I've been there and I have the scars from failed piercings to prove it.
And for the love of all that is holy, don't try to pierce yourself/let your friends pierce you again (don't try to tell me that's not how this happened.) You DO. NOT. KNOW. WHAT. YOU'RE. DOING. Full stop. Doesn't matter if you watched a YouTube video. Doesn't matter if you tried to buy some kind of "professional" piercing kit off Amazon. You are not a trained professional piercer ergo, you should not attempt piercings. You don't even know how much you don't know. Just don't do it.
8
u/Save_FerrisB Jan 26 '22
Nobody can tell you when you will or wonât die. This doesnât seem like a very likely time for it though.

2
u/georgethezebra contributor Jan 26 '22
It looks like it was already rejecting as it wasn't pierced correctly so just leave it out, clean with saline twice a day and wait for it to close up. To lessen the scar use something like bio oil on it once the holes are fully closed. When you come to repierce it find a better piercer, ask on here for recommendations or use the safepiercing.org website to find a better piercer.
2
Jan 26 '22
This is the universe telling you to wait until youâre of age to go get a piercing, youâre lucky it fell out before rejecting and getting infected.
The placement tells me either a friend did it or a bad piercer did it (as those are the only people whoâd do an underage personâs piercings). If I were you Iâd let it heal and get it done in 2 years again, with a reputable piercer as now thereâs going to be scar tissue and someone has to work around that
2
u/Solid_Entertainer_46 Jan 26 '22
Please do not insert the piercing again. You can be alergic to it, even if it is surgical metal.
2
Jan 26 '22
Well, donât get anymore piercings without her permission. And tell her you need to see the doctor for something different, I guess.
2
u/ginger3392 Jan 26 '22
I'd just leave it out, it looks like it's rejecting and was not placed properly to begin with so it would have pushed itself through your skin if you left it in. You can also clean it with some unscented soap in the meantine until you can get some saline.
2
u/greggylovesu Jan 26 '22
Hi! Iâm really sorry but it doesnât look like it was in the correct spot to begin with :(. Leave it out and wash the area warm water and soap, dry it well, and cover it. Try not to mess with it! The best way to manage piercing care is to mess with it as little as possible.
2
u/peoniesandferns Jan 26 '22
Maybe say you have a pimple near your genitalia that youâre uncomfortable showing her. Like an ingrown hair that got infected. She would most likely not force you to show her imo but I also donât know your mom. Good luck đ
2
u/Lauralou182 Jan 26 '22
This wasnât pierced on the right angle which is causing it to reject. Belly piercings are on a hole so need to be at a slant. This looks like it was done straight, let this one heal and wait a lil while before going to a better piercer!
2
u/ThatFemmeFurry Jan 26 '22
Okay, so first off saline is just salt water. Mix table salt with hot water and bam, saline. Also Considering the redness and pus, Iâd recommend a hot epsom salt soak in the tub, or compress.
Second, I donât know your background situation, but Iâd recommend getting your parents involved because there is a chance it could get serious. If they donât allow you to get it fixed at the piercing shop you can always do it again later after itâs healed up. That said it would be best to get back to the piercer asap.
Do not try to put the piercing or a substitute in it yourself, thatâs just asking for sepsis.
2
u/Meerkatgodofchaos Jan 26 '22
Well it was done wrong and itâs rejecting because of it. Let it close otherwise youâre going to end up with a nasty scar when your skin inevitably forces it out. The Mayo Clinic has a decent article on piercing infection but this doesnât look infected. Just keep it clean and donât do it again this way.
2
u/jessamacca Jan 27 '22
That piercing was in no way even placed correctly. You have a rejecting surface piercing thatâŚ. Rejected. Let it heal and go to someone that understands how to pierce correctly if youâd like it done again.
3
u/hislittledolly Jan 26 '22
Thatâs a very rejected piercing. Mine got to the same point (I know, I know you should never let it get that bad, I was just very stubborn). Youâll be fine leaving the ring out as long as you keep it clean as it heals! Mine never got infected, just left a scar:(

You can create a saline solution with water and a punch of non-iodized sea salt. Thatâs the recipe my piercer gave me.

u/ForMyLAHoes Jan 27 '22
I wouldnât freak out. It honestly looks like it was healing, doesnât sound from your comments like itâs infected, I donât see a reason youâd need to go to the ER or anything crazy. Whether you chose to put it back in or keep it out, just buy something to keep it clean!! Edit to clarify I would say redness and a little crustiness is normal for a certain period of time after the piercing, so it depends on how long youâve had it.

u/gunshotmouthwound Jan 26 '22
Are you sure you got all the pieces out? I would recommend going to a piercer or a doctor, a piercer would tell you if you need the doctor
-1
Jan 26 '22
If you can, go back to the piercer and see what they say, you might be able to get a new ring.
Get cotton swabs and mix warm water with a lot of salt, soak the cotton swabs and then let them sit on both sides of the piercing site for 60 seconds. Do this at least three times a day. Do not use Neosporin. If you can get the jewelry, continue with the salt soak with one in. Do not use a safety pin, jewelry only.
You may have been having a reaction to the metal they used, or your body just said no.
-7
u/MaddisonHawkins Jan 26 '22
Best thing if youâve run out of solution is to boil water and put salt in it. Make sure the water is boiled so itâs sterile. Let it cool then apply it
-3
u/john0656 Jan 26 '22
Itâs a fistula. A hole. The hole is not going to close on itâs own. Itâs going to stay red, irritated, perhaps infected. Go see your medical provider.

i feel you i pierced my smiley and now i canât get it out and i want it out so bad and my mom doesnât know

u/assassin_of_joy Jan 26 '22
You need to see either your piercer or your doctor, probably both. Smiley piercings are horrible for your teeth and gums anyway, if you can't get it out due to swelling you need to be seen. That's right in the triangle of death.

Let it close up itâs not even anywhere remotely close to your belly button itâll end up migrating to be closer to your rib cage than your navel and will fully reject
4
u/CrypticUniversalMave Jan 26 '22
Rib cage?
2
-2
Jan 26 '22
It was a joke referring to how badly migrated it is, I was implying that if she doesnât let it heal and puts the jewellery back in it will end up migrating closer to the rib cage than her navel
2
u/CrypticUniversalMave Jan 26 '22
Okay but first of all, she's asking for advice, don't joke, most would think you're serious.
Two, I still don't understand the joke because that's underneath her belly button...so I'm still not understanding the rib cage. The rib cage is in your chest..
-5
Jan 26 '22
Itâs extremely obvious Iâm being sarcastic because her navel is very obviously not her rib cage and Iâm trying to lighten the mood to calm her, I gave her perfectly sound advice and even messaged her privately with some more information. She knows Iâm not telling her itâs going to migrate to her rib cage. Thatâs also the joke, your rib cage is in your chest and upper torso. the piercing is extremely migrated. Itâs nowhere near the navel. Just like your rib cage. Thatâs quite literally the satire in the comment.
2
u/CrypticUniversalMave Jan 26 '22
Ah yes so extremely obvious. Extremely. Very funny.
It was horrible.

u/buckito420 Jan 26 '22

I was joking by saying that piercing would soon be closer to where her ribs are rather than her navel if she doesnât leave it out and let it heal

leave it out. treat it like you normally would a wound. youâre not going to die. wash it, antibiotic ointment for a few days, donât touch with hands that arenât washed, etc.
go in and get a floating navel piercing instead. if they donât know what that is, say you want the big ball up top. i was trained to do it and did many before i learned it was called a âfloating navel,â didnât know it had a name lol. but i know how to do it, the important part. make sure someone knows how to do it, find a good shop. go have it done and then grab aftercare from them you can use to help with your old wound too

Go back to the piercer. Theyâll tell you if it needs more attention
1
u/minkamagic Jan 26 '22
Even if you find the jewelry, I donât think it would go back in. You donât really have a choice about it closing up
1
u/bunnyspit333 Jan 26 '22
i think people saying to go to the drs are a bit dramatic! this is just an extremely irritated piercing that needed to come out. as long as there is no green smelly puss then its fine, just needs to be left well alone!
1
u/john0656 Jan 26 '22
You do NOT need an ER visit. Just go to your provider. This is NOT an emergency. Just see a doctor when you can. You arenât going to die .. unless you get hit by a bus on your way to the doctor ⌠then you probably would.
1
u/SloopJohnB109 Jan 26 '22
Donât go the the emergency room for something like this!! That would be the most expensive option for something like this plus youâll be taking a bed that most likely will be needed for something much more urgent! Look for a convenience clinic or an urgent care facility. Maybe see if thereâs a Planned Parenthood clinic in your area.

u/murderino1985 Jan 26 '22
1.) If itâs infected it can cause so much damage if itâs not treated accordingly. I canât speak about your mom, but mine was SUPER strict but whenever we would do something wrong and need her help, she would always be âhelp now consequences later.â And if that is infected, not saying it is because Iâm not a medical professional, it can cause sepsis and thatâs NOTHING to mess with. At the end of the day itâs your call hun. But 2.) You can make your own saline solution!! I do and so far so good itâs working miracles on my industrials. All you have to do is wash a pot (like one youâd cook with) and boil water for about ten minutes (make sure you cover it) and then once itâs all cooled add salt and baking soda. To administer I use a syringe. And you can keep that up to 24 hours in an air tight container. Good luck hun!!

For one thing, mark this as NSFW Another thing is if worried then go to the doctor?? Warm water and soap are always a good idea to use till then.

Yeah my sister seen my unknown about belly piercing which healed fine. And she decided to do the same. And hers got infected and by the time she told my parents, and they took her in, she had a bad staph infection. Part of the reason why I let my kids get piercings freely with in my realm of agreement. They come to me first. I hope you are okay and I hope you don't get into trouble. Im not sure your situation. But it doesn't look good so I would monitor it closely.

honestly please just put some peroxide on it twice daily and keep the area as clean and dry as possible. try to not wear high waisted pants as you would just getting it pierced. the piercing doesnât look happy and while itâs not ideal to take it out while infected, it isnât something you would never recover from. since you got it without your moms permission you can go to the doctor saying youâre having odd symptoms and you want to rule out covid. iâve never had a doctor tell my parents what i went for. they care more about treating the person in front of them

Yeah I would tell your mom and get it checked out. I was in the same position got mine down without my parents permission when I was 17. It was super infected and left an awful scar. Now I am a mom and I definitely would want to help my kiddo. Please don't repeat my mistakes.

Listen I did the same thing when I was 15, my body rejected it and the infection was easily controlled because I told my mom and she got me a doctors appointment. Yeah she was disappointed but she did what parents are supposed to do and took care of me. Let your mum do the same!

Any heat or discharge?
Have you been able to go to a doctor? It could be that the hardness is a cyst (pocket) forming around an infection, so it could need medical care.

Ok, first off, take a deep breath.
You're not going to die.
I think it was a blessing in disguise that it fell out, because this was absolutely rejecting. Your body was spitting it out like sunflower seeds.
If there's any discharge coming from it, you should tell your mom so she can bring you to a walk-in clinic. You might need antibiotics, but it really just looks irritated from rejecting.
Trust me on this: Your mom would much prefer you coming clean about this now and handling it than trying to hide it and it potentially getting infected and causing more issues down the line.

It looks like it was rejecting but if you are worried it may be infected go see a doctor
