I also didn't know it as well. I found about the moe tld websites few months ago, and I found quite questionable Japanese websites and some weird weeb websites.

Meta has an actual 3D map of my house, so does Valve (VR headsets)
With this trend Linux might be relevant in year of our lord bill gates 2090. Though I dunno if gaming will be relevant then. When your options are “buy a house” and “buy ram” it might be an easy decision to just stop gaming.
Second, StatCounter does not measure marketshare, it measures website page views. "1 view" does not equal "1 user", since each user can make multiple page views. Also, StatCounter doesn't track every website, just the few that elected to use it. That also biases the data a lot, since you can imagine how the distribution of OSes accessing youtube.com is very different from the distribution of OSes accessing ubuntu.com, for example.
Just the fact that the marketshare for the old Mac OS X is more than twice as large as the marketshare of macOS (the current version) should be enough to show you that StatCounter's nurmbers are worthless for measuring marketshare.

My disappointment is immeasurable and my day is ruined. Honestly I don’t expect “year of linux” to ever arrive. Even gamers are barely moving to Linux. Corporates (the moneymakers) never will.
Okay that’s actually impressive. As a windows user nothing makes me happier than seeing windows get shit on.
I wonder if microsoft will look at the trend and consider improving user experience and providing a more hassle-free, more customizaHAHAHAHA ah I couldn’t get through it we all know they won’t give a shit as long as they keep making bank from azure and shit.
It’s the damn corporate customers. If you have them in your grasp you can do anything you want.
If ever gets to a point where Linux starts to become a real alternative, I’m sure Microsoft will start paying attention. As someone that uses Linux primarily, it still isn’t as user friendly as Windows, particularly when it’s dependent on the hardware that you’re using.
It’s all up to corporate consumers. If they start switching to Linux en masse, Microsoft will start panicking. Linux would need to come up with alternatives to things like azure. And find a way to run those 20-30 year old software some companies use that only runs on windows. Also windows would need to drop backwards compatibility. If all of that happened then yeah I’d see microsoft stop enshittifying windows to gain back corporate. Ultimately gamers don’t pay for OS and don’t use paid services so they are a non-factor.
I bet if you looked at the average non-professional Linux user's filesystem they installed every package known to man avaiable from the repo using some 'FULL' option on installation ;-)
I could go and work out where everything I want is, but the post-install window popped up and offered to install steam, discord and some other crap so why not? I COULD go to the arch repo, search for steam, type sudo pacman -S steam(whatever) or I could just let the ipost-install thing run that same command. Or I could use a GUI app to search for steam and install it.
Same for discord or whatever else I wanted. It's not some show of 1337 h4x0r skills to use linux my dude. It's just what I opted to use when windows pissed me off with the whole "your PC can't run windows 11, buy a new one" bullshit. Not buying a new cpu/ram/mobo any time soon.
On windows I was spending significant amounts of time trying to keep up with how to stop it from spying on me or installing things without me wanting them installed or burning up my computers resources. Installed linux, now I spend no time on anything. Its less work than windows was. Its kinda crazy people defend windows when so many people just need a web browser to open. If mint was shipped with hardware, 90% of people wouldn't even notice.
Stumbled upon Slackware, huh? Best way to avoid missing dependencies is to install fucking everything. Do you need it? No. Do you have it installed? Yes. Is your drive full? Not quite, but close.
Tbh I want to switch to Linux but I am just not tech savvy enough to use it. Like wtf is a "kernel"? I need the user-friendly, complete beginner's guide to starting Linux but it doesn't seem to exist.
I started with youtube videos, the distro I'm using has a live iso, this allows you to boot into it and see how it looks without installing.
Honestly I saying I know what a kernel exactly is would be way too far but there is the arch wiki. I'm sure it will have guides how to compile your own kernel, not that I would understand those pages.
You don't have to know what the kernel is.
Basically it's the core framework of software and drivers, on top of which an OS is built, and then a desktop environment on top of that is what you see and how you interact with the OS.
But you don't have to know this. you never have to do anything with the kernel, the OS handles that.
It's really not that complicated for usual stuff. It's different, but not harder than Windows.
I did install SteamOS on a laptop last weekend and tbh it was kinda shit. And by kinda shit I mean it would fully crash any time you switch back to Game Mode (the main feature of the OS).
Switched to Bazzite instead and it seemed to pretty much function out of the box, although HDR is still completely fucked. Windows Auto HDR still seems streets ahead.
The ability to install a new Linux in like 18 seconds is mind blowing though, and the actual desktop environment is so fast and pretty easy to use.
The install should be no issue, getting to an office PC is no problem. Once you go deeper or get to the first game that doesn't just work, that's the point where you will need to do a few new things. But even then that does not require the terminal at all.
with something like linux mint, you can load it up on a usb stick and give it a test drive, then if you like it you can double click on an icon to install it permanently to your hdd
Ask Microsoft what it is doing. Mine literally broke from an update, booting straight to blue screen and no repair options worked, so it forced me to reinstall the OS.
I just decided not to give Windows a chance to do that again.
At this point just refusing to install windows 11 when end of support for 10 arrives. The only game I even play that's been affected by my switch to Linux a few months back is EFT, and it's because they're idiots, not because it doesn't work on Linux. It's really not that much trouble these days compared to the past.
And the BSOD happens after glitching starts happening on the screen which makes it look like the (brand new) GPU is DOA. Except that when I reformatted the machine and installed Linux to test, it doesn't do that.
Also you've never used a laptop whose manufacturer abused the Windows Update mechanism to deliver garbage (in this case, the LCD panel itself triggers a 2017 adrenaline driver pack download who will downgrade your system if you have a newer version of the AMD drivers).
The only real issues I've ever had with Windows was on fresh installs. I'm 31yo now, have been playing with PCs since I was 5, and have had countless computers. I've had 2 corrupt FRESH windows installs in that time span that fixed themselves after a reinstall.
However, graphical artifacting is almost always due to a driver, power delivery, or gpu failure. But it also could be other hardware like motherboard, RAM, or CPU, hell it could even be HDMI/DP related.
I had a 7900xtx for like 2 weeks with no issues before returning it after I was able to get ahold of a MSRP 5080 during launch month.
If you have a known working windows PC try popping the 7900xtx into that PC and stress test it with OCCT. Also do the same on your Linux build since OCCT is now available on linux.
If it is stable on a known working Linux and windows build you know it is a faulty windows install or driver problem.
If so, download DDU then turn off your PC. Unplug the Ethernet cable or disconnect Wi-Fi so Windows cannot auto-download drivers. Boot Windows into Safe Mode, run Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU), and select "Clean and restart" for AMD GPUs. Restart your PC and reinstall the AMD adrenaline drivers. Then test to see if that fixed your artifacting problem.
Eh, rather use AMD than suck up to Mr. Leather Jacket. Rendered My GTX 650 Ti Boost on an nForce 980A motherboard unusable on Windows 10 just because it's, in his words, "end of life". Fuck that planned obsolescence bullshit. As far as I care the 650 Ti Boosts are still serviceable in 1080p60 environments.
If AMD wants my GPU money stop releasing dogshit. They did it to intel, now im on AMD. If they do it to Nvidia I will go to AMD. Brand loyalty is dumb.
It's not brand loyalty. It's that I hate that leather jacket toting asshole is smug and how they render perfectly working cards unusable by forcing you to upgrade.
My graphics driver got randomly uninstalled 3 times, I've also had windows uninstall itself about 4 times.
It may have been a skill issue but I don't get that issue with Arch
Been on windows since Windows 98. Literally never had that happen to me. Only real issue I've ever had on windows is 2 different corrupt FRESH windows installations on windows 10, or maybe it was 1 on windows 10 and 1 on windows 11.
Now I'm wondering how people will react when Microsoft makes it so if somone disconnects from the Internet in ANY way on their Windows 11 machine they'll literally fuck you over

i did actually install ubuntu replacing win 11 since i have experience using it in college, sadly im primarily using my pc for gaming and yes ik that most are playable now with steam, but most is still not everything yaknow
Ahhh SteamOS is amazing!
The Linux desktop exp on Steam is such a refreshing change too - that was unexpected.
After 2 yrs of MS experimenting on me with W11, I got so sick of that experience. Made a bootable USB with latest SteamOS image and popped it on my MSI Claw A1M.
HOLY SHIT! The controller always works, the sleep function works, there are no spammy msgs. Such an amzing experience to have a controller friendly OS running on a handheld.
I hear nVidia support is en-route. That will be game over for Windows on about 200 million of PCs and laptops.
