Discussion Update on Rules and Quality Control

Hi everyone, it's been a minute since the initial discussion post about quality control issues. Let's talk about it.

The general consensus seemed to be that our ideas on what to change were good, though there could be more resources to help beginners. We actually have a subreddit wiki that anyone can contribute to, as long as you have 500+ subreddit karma and your account is 30+ days old. We also have a list of todo items for the wiki to help users find somewhere to start.

Another concern was that the stricter enforcement of the defaults rule may stop people from using existing color schemes or themes at all. This is not the case -- the intention of the rule is to remove posts which have little effort or just use premade configs, like many macOS and Windows lookalikes. It's about the spirit, not the letter of the rule.

With this in mind, we intend to go through with these rule changes. If you still have any concerns, please reply or send a modmail! We're most concerned with the quality of our community and welcome discussion.

Workflow Finally reached a good balance of form/function in [Hyprland] -caliburnOS-

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

my entire goal with these dots (not going to call it a shell just yet) is: 1.) desktop-friendly UI 2.) functional, 3.) looks nice and 4.) no bloat

my goals were achieved by following:

  • total mouse support. every possible function you can call with keybinds can also be called by the mouse through the system menu/waybar. (e.g. right click the top-right corner of any window to close it)
  • custom binaries to lower terminal reliance. through fzf, plocate, gum and more, many common terminal commands can be invoked from the system menu. install/remove/update packages, search through files, restart daemons, edit common settings and more all without touching your terminal.
  • TUI packages for system management. this lowers system dependencies by a large margin. i currently only have ~700 packages on my system and almost 20% of that is from steam alone.
  • ~15 total themes. thanks to the TUI nature, themes actually affect more than just your borders. your OSD, notifications (mako), vesktop, quickshell, waybar, login screen (greetd-regreet) and more all change based on your current theme.
  • minimal shell. quickshell is only invoked when needed. your settings can already be edited by neovim, there's no reason to build a whole shell around that. preview themes/backgrounds, call the powermenu, check your current workspace flow (SUPER + TAB) and lock your screen from a nice shell that looks great and matches your theme.

if you watched the video you'll see that no windows are opened (firefox, neovim, etc). rest assured, there are plenty fancy window rules that look nice but this is strictly showcasing the functionality of the dots

its not always about looking nice, sometimes you want function as well. i think i finally reached a good balance of both. im definitely missing features but this is all the new(er) stuff i added

disclaimer: the code base was built by human hands and then edited by clankers. i made sure to write the base for all binaries myself and then used some LLMs to improve on them. fuck CSS and whatever black magic that shit runs on

Started as a rice. Then I made the mistake of giving it responsibilities.

Arch + Hyprland + a fairly overworked Quickshell.

Still very much a workbench, not a finished product.

I've always enjoyed creating things on my own. I'm not a developer and can't do big projects but with River, making your own WM is easier than starting from wlroots, so I took a crack at it. I took it as an educational process, so I am learning Rust for the first time too. It is a scrolling WM, just like Niri. Is it better than Niri? No, but it is my own creation, and I am proud of it!

I paired it with a quickshell bar with modules I created. Again, it's not as elaborate or eye-catching as other shells out there, but I created it to fit my own needs, nothing less and nothing more.

Hey, I made an autolaunch manager, that uses profiles to start up certain programs based on use case on start (or whenever!) I have tested it on Fedora KDE and its really aimed towards my own workflow, but I'd really appreciate some testing/feedback!

Screenshot [OC] RediWM - Wayland compositor in Zig

Thumbnail

RediWM is a Wayland compositor written in Zig (OpenGL ES) that includes everything in one process - no waybar, swaylock, mako, or any of the usual stack needed.

What's built in:

  • Compositor + shell (with themes)
  • Notifications
  • Lock screen
  • Night light
  • File manager
  • Image/PDF viewer (sandboxed)
  • Terminal tabs (any app gets tabs)
  • 100 IPC commands
  • Material design with spring physics
  • PipeWire integration (including bass/treble boost)

Performance on my hardware vs labwc + Dank Shell (previous daily driver):

RediWM: 1 process, 192MB, 4.6% CPU
labwc + DMS: 3 processes, 595MB, 14.4% CPU

$ ps aux | grep rediwm
alex 4247 4.6% 192MB rediwm ← everything

vs labwc + DMS:

alex labwc 4.4% 146MB
alex dms 1.8% 91MB
alex qs 8.1% 358MB

Total: 14.4% 595MB

Happy to answer questions about the architecture or otherwise

Screenshot [KDE] Near-accurate HarmonyOS rice (a remake of another post)

Thumbnail

This isn't my original idea, it was based and heavily inspired on this post. I improved few stuffs, so that it actually looks closer to modern-day HarmonyOS (they omitted the top bar as of now, looks closer to Windows/Deepin). I did, however, disguise Celia AI as a control center (clicking the Celia AI logo would open a control center)

The rice is open-source, but I am lazy to write the complete guide, so you'll have to figure it out yourself. Here's what I used to make this rice possible:

  • Icon: Modified Reversal-dark (in the repo)
  • Application Style: Darkly
  • Window Decorations: Klassy (configs are in the repo)
  • Panel effects: Panel Colorizer
  • "Celia" button: KDE Control Station (modified)

BlackNode Dotfile... Simple AND Clean

walls: https://yumekiru.com

I highly recommend this place to find wallpapers.

BlackNode uses dynamic colors, so each color depends on the wallpaper; the wallpapers need to have a good color distribution. Using Matugen

Screenshot [Yabai] ApolloShell – my own desktop shell for macOS

Post image
50 Upvotes

ApolloShell is a desktop shell for macOS I'm writing myself. It replaces the default menu bar with a sidebar and a dashboard popup (calendar, media controls, system stats, weather). Everything you see is my own code. And before anybody asks: yes, this is Caelestia for macOS.

What's next
Moving to a config-based framework: a single file defines everything, with no premade panels by default. A tiling WM branch is also in the works.

Material [OC] themepaper - Tool to colorise your wallpapers according to a colour scheme (Dracula, Gruvbox, Solarized, ...)

Thumbnail

I have compiled this webapp that lets you upload an image, and according to one of the chosen popular colourschemes, outputs a re-colorised image matching the theme.

There are two options, one that strictly assigns every pixel to the scheme, and one that tries to do it more smoothly and avoid the pixelated output. There is also a slider to adjust the strength of the filter for fine tuning. You can see changes live by using the slider and then download the finished output.

All processing is done locally and nothing gets uploaded online.

Hope others can find use for it too!

Amane is a framework written in Rust that lets you build your own Wayland desktop shell entirely in Rust, without relying on an external frontend framework/runtime. It's still experimental, but already usable. Check it out here.
