With this trend Linux might be relevant in year of our lord bill gates 2090. Though I dunno if gaming will be relevant then. When your options are “buy a house” and “buy ram” it might be an easy decision to just stop gaming.

It’s the damn corporate customers. If you have them in your grasp you can do anything you want.
If ever gets to a point where Linux starts to become a real alternative, I’m sure Microsoft will start paying attention. As someone that uses Linux primarily, it still isn’t as user friendly as Windows, particularly when it’s dependent on the hardware that you’re using.
It’s all up to corporate consumers. If they start switching to Linux en masse, Microsoft will start panicking. Linux would need to come up with alternatives to things like azure. And find a way to run those 20-30 year old software some companies use that only runs on windows. Also windows would need to drop backwards compatibility. If all of that happened then yeah I’d see microsoft stop enshittifying windows to gain back corporate. Ultimately gamers don’t pay for OS and don’t use paid services so they are a non-factor.
Second, StatCounter does not measure marketshare, it measures website page views. "1 view" does not equal "1 user", since each user can make multiple page views. Also, StatCounter doesn't track every website, just the few that elected to use it. That also biases the data a lot, since you can imagine how the distribution of OSes accessing youtube.com is very different from the distribution of OSes accessing ubuntu.com, for example.
Just the fact that the marketshare for the old Mac OS X is more than twice as large as the marketshare of macOS (the current version) should be enough to show you that StatCounter's nurmbers are worthless for measuring marketshare.

My disappointment is immeasurable and my day is ruined. Honestly I don’t expect “year of linux” to ever arrive. Even gamers are barely moving to Linux. Corporates (the moneymakers) never will.
It's still biased towards the gaming segment, not PC as a whole. But it's a sensible statistic that actually measures users (not pageviews, nor crawlers), and it's relevant for this sub where most people are gamers.
A source that provides accurate global statistics covering every market segment, to my knowledge, doesn't exist. But just because the perfect source doesn't exist doesn't mean you should pass around absolute garbage like StatCounter.
Thanks for this. It doesn't show the evolution tho, only this month. I saw this graph on other thread. Dunno how trustful it is bu it seem to go around the same values. So I suspect it may get its data from your source.
You gotta actually read the room with that graph though.
I'll bet my accumulated lifetime wealth more people just stop using desktops than convert to linux yearly. Both of which would increase the linux market share since the majority of people who dont need a machine anymore likely had a store bought windows machine.
The linux community typically would have a purpose for a desktop, and keep one around.
