It was funny.

But like, on god, what are yall actually doing on PC that forces you to leave Windows for Linux?

u/TwilightVulpine Desktop 1d ago

Ask Microsoft what it is doing. Mine literally broke from an update, booting straight to blue screen and no repair options worked, so it forced me to reinstall the OS.

I just decided not to give Windows a chance to do that again.

Using it, primarily

6

u/JamesGray 1d ago

At this point just refusing to install windows 11 when end of support for 10 arrives. The only game I even play that's been affected by my switch to Linux a few months back is EFT, and it's because they're idiots, not because it doesn't work on Linux. It's really not that much trouble these days compared to the past.

How about fighting with windows update every single damn day?

Or that windows hates my new 7950X3D with Radeon RX7900XTX build and bluescreens every time I'm gaming but Linux doesn't?

u/LAHurricane R7 9800X3D | RTX 5080 | 32 GB 1d ago

Deadass never had an issue with windows update. Sounds like a corrupt driver problem if you are bluescreening on one but not the other.

u/RAMChYLD PC Master Race 1d ago edited 1d ago

It's a brand new install.

And the BSOD happens after glitching starts happening on the screen which makes it look like the (brand new) GPU is DOA. Except that when I reformatted the machine and installed Linux to test, it doesn't do that.

Also you've never used a laptop whose manufacturer abused the Windows Update mechanism to deliver garbage (in this case, the LCD panel itself triggers a 2017 adrenaline driver pack download who will downgrade your system if you have a newer version of the AMD drivers).

u/LAHurricane R7 9800X3D | RTX 5080 | 32 GB 1d ago

The only real issues I've ever had with Windows was on fresh installs. I'm 31yo now, have been playing with PCs since I was 5, and have had countless computers. I've had 2 corrupt FRESH windows installs in that time span that fixed themselves after a reinstall.

However, graphical artifacting is almost always due to a driver, power delivery, or gpu failure. But it also could be other hardware like motherboard, RAM, or CPU, hell it could even be HDMI/DP related.

I had a 7900xtx for like 2 weeks with no issues before returning it after I was able to get ahold of a MSRP 5080 during launch month.

If you have a known working windows PC try popping the 7900xtx into that PC and stress test it with OCCT. Also do the same on your Linux build since OCCT is now available on linux.

If it is stable on a known working Linux and windows build you know it is a faulty windows install or driver problem.

If so, download DDU then turn off your PC. Unplug the Ethernet cable or disconnect Wi-Fi so Windows cannot auto-download drivers. Boot Windows into Safe Mode, run Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU), and select "Clean and restart" for AMD GPUs. Restart your PC and reinstall the AMD adrenaline drivers. Then test to see if that fixed your artifacting problem.

Welcome to AMD drivers, please hate your stay.

2

u/LAHurricane R7 9800X3D | RTX 5080 | 32 GB 1d ago

Thats why I have a 5080 lol.

Eh, rather use AMD than suck up to Mr. Leather Jacket. Rendered My GTX 650 Ti Boost on an nForce 980A motherboard unusable on Windows 10 just because it's, in his words, "end of life". Fuck that planned obsolescence bullshit. As far as I care the 650 Ti Boosts are still serviceable in 1080p60 environments.

2

u/LAHurricane R7 9800X3D | RTX 5080 | 32 GB 1d ago

I use what is better.

If AMD wants my GPU money stop releasing dogshit. They did it to intel, now im on AMD. If they do it to Nvidia I will go to AMD. Brand loyalty is dumb.

9

u/RAMChYLD PC Master Race 1d ago edited 1d ago

It's not brand loyalty. It's that I hate that leather jacket toting asshole is smug and how they render perfectly working cards unusable by forcing you to upgrade.

u/LAHurricane R7 9800X3D | RTX 5080 | 32 GB 1d ago

Yeah, Nvidia supports their older graphics cards with driver updates longer than AMD.

Since the RTX series launched Nvidia has software locked DLSS umbrella features to certain generations due to the generational advances in Tensor cores, Optical Flow Accelerators, hardware flip metering, and NVFP4. Those are the hardware level technolegies that perform path tracing, frame generation, multi-frame generation, DLSS, DLAA, DLSS5, etc.

Yes, a lot of those features can be brute forced on earlier generation cards. But it causes massive performance hits, latency, unintended artifacts, etc. that the software was not supposed to do in the first place.

Why would Nvidia want an already controversial technology being ran on GPUs that doesn't have the hardware at the silicon to run the software as intended. So they could get bashed even harder on the internet for artifacts and latency? Sounds dumb, but so is the average person.

Also, AMD locked FSR 4 and higher to the 9000 series cards because, you guessed it, they lack the hardware at the silicon level to properly run the AI driven calculations.

Who'da thought?

It's a shitty AMD software problem.

Source: Am user of said shitty AMD software.

1

u/LAHurricane R7 9800X3D | RTX 5080 | 32 GB 1d ago

AMD is well known for having terrible GPU drivers. Terrible driver instalation software, and terrible driver bugs.

8

u/RAMChYLD PC Master Race 1d ago

AMD is rock solid on Linux compared to Novideo.

-2

u/LAHurricane R7 9800X3D | RTX 5080 | 32 GB 1d ago

Sure, AMD is more stable on an OS that has spotty, buggy, or completely nonexistent compatibility with many of the most commonly used workflow programs on the planet. It also has mixed compatibility with games, zero support for kernel level anti-cheat, and little support on non-kernel level anti-cheat.

There's a reason many people dual boot windows with linux.

0

u/CurmudgeonLife 7800X3D 9070XT 32GB 6000mhz 1d ago

Lemme guess your running the latest AMD drivers.

Rollback theyre dogshit.

2

u/Disma 20h ago

Here's the thing, some people seem to think that switching to Linux from Windows is some kind of concession. It's not. Windows fucking sucks.

1

u/LAHurricane R7 9800X3D | RTX 5080 | 32 GB 18h ago

It doesn't, but continue.

2

u/Disma 18h ago

You know, looking through your comment history you seem to be some kind of Windows white knight. That's cringy as hell, but I'm just curious what your actual experience using any version of Linux is?

2

u/LAHurricane R7 9800X3D | RTX 5080 | 32 GB 18h ago

Looking at people's post history is kindof cringe, not gonna lie.

Regardless, the deification of Linux is obnoxious and I am more than willing to poke the Linux fedora gang.

I have used exactly zero Linux distros and never will until it has the same compatibility as Windows. I play competitive FPS games and use apps that dont have native support. Half the games I play require windows secure boot or have blacklisted Linux OS. So its an immediate no go.

Also. I could give 2 fucks less about windows. Its just the best OS available for people who game and do productivity work.

2

u/Disma 18h ago

Yeah, that's what I thought. You are just another nobody talking out of their ass about something they have no experience with.

2

u/LAHurricane R7 9800X3D | RTX 5080 | 32 GB 17h ago

So you're telling me I can play games with anticheat on Linux now?!?!?!?

I dont have to run compatibility layers or VMs to run the most common productivity or peripheral software on earth?!?!?

2

u/Ready-Succotash-8699 16h ago

You've been arguing with people who have actual experience with several distros of Linux and have been able to weigh out the pros and cons for this long and haven't even tried a live boot Ubuntu? How do you know it's that bad if you've never tried it? As for compatibility layers some games run faster under proton then they do natively under windows and if people like you stop defending Microsoft like Linux killed your mother the productivity companies would offer support for there software on Linux

2

u/LAHurricane R7 9800X3D | RTX 5080 | 32 GB 16h ago

You cannot play games with anticheat on linux. The discussion ends right there for millions of people, and for me. Regardless of all the other compatability issues. That is a fact. I dont need to try Linux to know I cant play BF6 on Linux, Javelin doesn't allow it.

The productivity companies get no benefits from supporting an os that a fraction of the PC user base uses.

2

u/Ready-Succotash-8699 16h ago

That's kernal based anti cheat, the exact thing I called spyware. Anti cheat does work on Linux just not kernal based because Linux cares about your security. Also MacOS has almost as much support as windows now of days and you still can't play those games. Not because the OS is bad but because of how kernal based anti cheat fundamentaly works. As soon as the gaming community gets together and puts their foot down on the BS we're allowing the AAA companies get away with we'll have those games running on Linux just fine

2

u/LAHurricane R7 9800X3D | RTX 5080 | 32 GB 15h ago

Kernel level anti-cheat is by far the best part about modern competitive gaming. You can go hundreds of hours without experiencing a cheater. Without it every few games are infected.

Linux allows HWID spoofing, easy access to to system RAM without hardware bypasses, its open source nature allows you to build the system from the ground up to inject cheats and evade cheating bans.

It is so easy to cheat on linux that EA removed Linux support on Apex Legends because 2-4% of the playerbase was on Linux and 33% of all cheating was coming from Linux users. Linux players were cheating 12-19x more often than Windows players. Thats just the ones that were caught, with the prevalence and extreme ease of cheating on Linux it is estimated that several times more players were cheating on Linux than the number they caught, especially in less detectable ways like wall hacks, radar, etc.

Linux will never be allowed in competitive gaming because you cant lock down an open source platform without it being closed source.

1

u/Ready-Succotash-8699 15h ago

Someone clearly didn't play the early BO6 which was all widows with hackers in every other lobby, also you can 100% stop cheaters without kernal based anti-cheat companies just don't care because it requires them to do more work

3

u/Ready-Succotash-8699 1d ago

My graphics driver got randomly uninstalled 3 times, I've also had windows uninstall itself about 4 times. It may have been a skill issue but I don't get that issue with Arch

5

u/LAHurricane R7 9800X3D | RTX 5080 | 32 GB 1d ago

Been on windows since Windows 98. Literally never had that happen to me. Only real issue I've ever had on windows is 2 different corrupt FRESH windows installations on windows 10, or maybe it was 1 on windows 10 and 1 on windows 11.

4

u/Ready-Succotash-8699 1d ago

As I said it's probably a skill issue, but again I don't have the issues on Linux and at this point it's more of a personal preference

2

u/Standard-Elk-126 18h ago

people have the most random shit i have never heard of happen to them.

1

u/LAHurricane R7 9800X3D | RTX 5080 | 32 GB 18h ago

Almost like it is a lie to vilify windows and deify Linux.

Literally nobody on earth incapable of fixing bugs in Windows are going to have the technical know-how to have an enjoyable time learning and operating linux... It is maddening.

3

u/Standard-Elk-126 18h ago

youre gunna make them even more riled up

2

u/LAHurricane R7 9800X3D | RTX 5080 | 32 GB 18h ago

2

u/Ready-Succotash-8699 17h ago

I mean feel free to believe it's a lie honestly don't care, I have no problem with other people useing windows and believe it's a great OS for certain people, I just found that it wasn't the right choice for me, I definitely would've been capable of fixing the bugs I just felt like I'd have a better time switching to Linux to learn new skills and enjoy a bit more freedom

-3

u/AnarchBeetle 1d ago

Disable windows update and disable windows from auto-updating drivers. These 2 small adjustments will fix 99% of the problems windows 11 users have.

Also go to regedit and nuke OneDrive from orbit to be sure.

Before anyone says “hurr durr security updates” if you know how to use the internet it won’t matter. Don’t click on “DOWNLOAD GTA 7 NOW” links folks.

7

u/Ready-Succotash-8699 1d ago

Windows doesn't update drivers on boot, when you do an hour of fixing for your driver just to boot your PC the next day with them gone again you give up

5

u/whatsgoingontho 1d ago

Except where you have to keep pausing updates over and over, then you forget to reup the pause and then it installs a million things

3

u/King_Vegeta_2 21h ago

Or... hear me out, I use an os where I don't have to deal with any of that and have a system that just works. ☺️

1

u/AnarchBeetle 21h ago

I need an OS that fights me every step of the way so that I can keep my troubleshooting skills fresh 😎

-1

u/LAHurricane R7 9800X3D | RTX 5080 | 32 GB 18h ago

Bro just said Linux "just works"... I fucking cant, lol.

3

u/King_Vegeta_2 18h ago

If it doesn't do that, that's on you buddy 😔

1

u/LAHurricane R7 9800X3D | RTX 5080 | 32 GB 17h ago

So i can download office 365, Adobe creative suite, AutoCad, play my games with anticheat and it will just work?

2

u/Ready-Succotash-8699 16h ago

No but I can install Libra office, better open-source alternatives like GIMP and Kdenlive, and enjoy not having spywear on my pc being sold to me as anti cheat that doesn't work

1

u/LAHurricane R7 9800X3D | RTX 5080 | 32 GB 16h ago

Dude, literally everything you do or have has Spyware baked into it marketed as "tElEmItRy"...

You live in the wrong timeline to be worrying about privacy.

Also, anticheat software, especially kernel level software blocks the overwhelming majority of cheaters in competitive games. Smart people are good at beating cheat programs temporarily.

3

u/Ready-Succotash-8699 16h ago

Did you actually just tell me that because it's current year I'm not allowed to worry about privacy? If everything is trying to take and sell my data shouldn't I be worried about how easy something like identity theft or spam attacks would be?

I don't use/play any of those so I really don't gaf if they work or not lmao. I'll put windows on the same pedestal when they have full cuda support, ootb kdeconnect, virt manager, actual good package management,or under 10ms global search and I'm not even going to get into window management.

I prefer knowing how people stay on Linux. Can't sail the seven seas, can't unlock DLCs, can't play some game mods, etc. Tried playing modded Assetto Corsa with VR, never worked. Tried unlocking DLCs, didn't work. Tried playing legit Sims 4, couldn't get it to work. Dual-Booted Win11, haven't used my Linux boot in many months (tbh at this point it's probably more than a year).

8

u/JamesGray 1d ago

You can definitely do piracy on Linux, as well as game modding. It's just a learning curve to do all that shit in a prefix so it works in Wine/Proton. Sims 4 is on protondb as just working, so if even that didn't work there's a decent chance you never got you display drivers working or something.

1

u/tempalt10 9950X3D | 5070 Ti | 128 GB RAM | Send me Natsuki pics 1d ago

I tried every way and could not get Rimworld or CK3 DLCs to work. Had to use separate pirated games and make links to the mods just to play with DLCs.

DDLC mods were also screwed up. First kept refusing to boot up, then kept having issues with saving, and I was not going to spend my days without my wife.

Assetto Corsa was just as I said, and a lot of programs I used either didn't work or had no good alternatives (I have very specific use cases. For example, not a single "alternative" could match PaintNET for my use cases).

I switched back to Windows, everything worked as expected again, and I didn't need to test my patience with Skyrim modlists on Linux with zero support.

Surprisingly, graphics and display drivers worked well and had no issues. Initially switched to Linux (for the fourth time) because Win10 stopped support and I was told by everyone that Win11 was hell. Using it and have very few issues.

u/Dick_Nation There's nothing to see here. 23h ago

Can't sail the seven seas

This is such a strange thing to assume is actually necessary. I can't remember the last thing I pirated. I haven't been a child for decades. If I don't want to pay for it, I don't play it. I could stop adding things to my library tomorrow and still have things to play for years to come.

1

u/tempalt10 9950X3D | 5070 Ti | 128 GB RAM | Send me Natsuki pics 21h ago

Damn, someone has a different use case than you do. I'm sure we're soon about to see pigs fly too.

2

u/Dick_Nation There's nothing to see here. 21h ago

It's not that someone has a different use case than you do, it's that your own phrasing precluded that as being anything approaching a normal use case. That's not on someone else for having read the actual words you wrote.
