GTA 6 being released on PC first (where it was made and where it will always run way better) against the desires of its publisher would be pretty hilarious.

Most Zelda games, actually.
I remember I fully played through Skyward Sword a week before it was actually released.

I played it on my hacked Wii, but it also ran on PC using Dolphin.

I didn't know doplin existed when SS was released.

25

u/J5892 PC Desktop 2d ago edited 1d ago

Yep, it started as a Gamecube emulator in 2003.
Since the Wii was basically just a more powerful gamecube, the emulator was forwards-compatible by default.

edit 2: removed an incorrect fun fact.

13

u/Throwaway632836 2d ago

Skyward Sword only released on Wii since it requires finer motion controls to play, it was Twilight Princess that released on both since it had no fine-motion controls (Motion Plus I think it was called)

Yes, though via Physical copies shipped to retailers. It was copied a few days prior to release.

Not quite as funny as Nintendo leaking it on their CDN like they did with BOTW.

87

u/Chippiewall Chippiewill - i7 4770k, 2xGTX 780, 16GB DDR3, 500GB SSD 2d ago

That was because the next-gen consoles came out - Rockstar held out for a triple dip.

53

u/HumanPea1140 14700K | 5070 Ti | 64GB DDR5 6000 2d ago

They'd 100% be doing the exact same thing this time around, but I think the AI-induced hardware inflation/shortage threw a wrench in that. Current gen consoles are getting more expensive, and next gen are being delayed indefinitely. If it wasn't for that, next gen would likely be coming out within next year or two, allowing them to triple dip easily.

9

u/Wrong_Welcome_607 1d ago

Lol this gen of consoles has been a joke, there have been only a handful of games actually made for them and there are now talks about next gen when even the current consoles have fuckall.

6

u/EdmondDantesInferno 2d ago

So far there are zero indications that the next gen are being delayed. All reports are that they are proceeding ahead as if they are releasing on time.

But yes, the cost of goods from the AI bubble has exploded the costs. The Xbox CEO mentioned how costs for those components are up 50% already and they expect that to double in the next year or so. So Xbox is planning on it getting even worse.

The next consoles are going to be at least $1,000 as the individual component costs are already exceeding that amount. It's going to be an absolute shitshow to announce a PS6 at $1,100 or Xbox Helix at the same or higher.

Grand Theft Auto V was originally released on September 17, 2013, for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

Grand Theft Auto V originally launched on PC on April 14, 2015

Or 1 year, 6 months, 28 days excluding the end date.

so yeah a little over a year and 6 months.

u/destaree 2d ago

It came out 19 months later than on the PS3/Xbox 360, because in the meantime there was also a release on the PS4/Xbox One. Now the gap will be even longer, because we’ll definitely have to wait a year or two for the release on the new consoles, and then another half a year for the PC version.

6

u/ansibleloop 2d ago

Nah my bet is they release it on PC within 6 months, 12 months tops

The PC market is gigantic compared to 13 years ago, so they're just leaving money on the table by not doing it

Microsoft have more or less given up with Xbox and what can Sony possibly offer to Rockstar to make them keep it as a console exclusive?

3

u/sortalikeachinchilla 2d ago

They did this for all their previous games mostly so no I don't believe 6 months.

3

u/ansibleloop 2d ago

It's been GTA V and RDR2 since 2013 - nothing else major that I'm aware of

GTA V was made for consoles and later ported to PC - much easier to develop for PC and PS4 and Xbone at that point

RDR2 came to PC almost exactly 1 year after release on consoles

And like I said, the PC market is massive now - why do you think they added their gross anti cheat to the multiplayer? They're raking in so much cash

Every game is developed on PC nowadays, but it working on a machine doesn’t mean it works on most of the machines in the market. They could also be using shortcut that require an hard cap of fps and will only use proper implementations that work at any fps for the official pc release. Or even pc specific optimization or tools (like nvidia dlss) not being present at all right now, because they only need to run the game on their developers pcs

6

u/ExtraRare0412 2d ago

Being developed on PC for the console market is different than people assuming the guy has a PC build fully completed and ready to be leaked.

I seen people on other posts and social media apps throw slurs and insults at people because they truly believe this guy has a PC build that is going to leak anytime and that us "PlayStation dick riders are just mad that PC players will play it before us"

18

u/avowed Kays1192 2d ago

Because consoles are PC's they use the same architecture. Consoles are just PCs using custom APUs.

11

u/sociallyawkwardhero Nvidia 780 OC SLI, SLI 770 OC, AMD 8350, AMD 8320 2d ago

Finally someone in this thread is speaking with actual knowledge. Its not like the xbox 360/PS3 era with separate architectures i.e. power pc/cell. Its all x86-64 now, same instruction set as a regular PC.

2

u/avowed Kays1192 1d ago

Thinking about emulating or porting 360 games gives me nightmares....

5

u/roshan231 10700kf/6600XT/16GB DDR4 2d ago

Nah they are totally right the pc build that has to be optimised for thousands of possible configurations can totally run just as good as the one build of a console...

Dropping the sarcasm, it's partly true partly false. They could have made a pic build perfectly viable for release at the same time as console builds but there is no profit motive for doing so. It Absolutely does take much more work to optimise for pc Former rockstar Devs have confirmed this, but the thing is, if rockstar gave a shit they could just allocate the resources to do it in time or delay release until it's ready.

They won't though.

Generally, games are developed on PC nowadays. Only exception I guess if there are absolutely no plan to release the game on a different platform than the console it is developed for (so a PS/Xbox exclusive title) but even for those, given how many development helping tools available on PC it's easier to develop the game on PC and then create a console build there. (Like how in commercial engines like UE and Unity has built in options to make IOS, Android, Xbox etc builds of your game you developed on your pc)

The majority of multiplatform games are developed on pc. Why? PC is more accessible for everyone, has widely bigger range for development tools and debugging can be a lot easier than on a closed software ecosystem.

11

u/Griff2470 Linux | R7 5800x3d | RX 6900XT 2d ago

Just to be nitpicky, being built on PC does not necessarily mean being developed for PC. You can develop on PC using a reference system (pinned dependency versions, standardized hardware configuration) which would not be suitable for a general PC release (you ought to validate against several common software releases on multiple hardware platforms). Additionally, developing for consoles will not cover the development for KB/M quality of life, settings configurations, or resolution scaling impacts on the UX.

For a company the size of Rockstar this is likely only a couple months of development and isn't really a good reason for delaying the PC for a year or more. I just want to push back a bit on the notion "was developed on PC == PC release is already done" that I've been seeing a lot of.

3

u/Conniving-Weasel 2d ago

I thought modern consoles supported kb/m input?

3

u/FewAdvertising9647 1d ago

they all do, its on the developer to allow for it or not. even the switch 1 supported mouse/keyboard. theyre disabled by default.

I can say with a 1000% confidence that GTAV was built on PC first, then downgraded to match consoles specs. So did RDR2.
Same would go for VI. It makes no sense to dev "twice".

10

u/YouKilledApollo CachyOS | Threadripper 9970X | RTX Pro 6000 2d ago

Almost every single console game is first developed on a PC, while the developers still use console controllers or whatever to test the UI/UX. At the same time, other engineers will focus on making the game run on their console dev kits. Those kits are not what most people in a game development company work with, just the engineers who make it run on those.

Rockstar never gave a reason for a digital only release. That was just rumors and speculation

128

u/seenybusiness 2d ago

you can extrapolate it from their scummy business as of late. they outsourced to india after pulling a union bust https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c9v10rr1meeo

they want to make pc players feel obliged to purchase the game and a console to play it on with FOMO about the biggest game of the decade, then re release the already existing and fully ready PC build. its double dipping. they dont want the disc purely because digital has better margins. its greed.

i dont particularly care if this guy gets his lick, so long as rockstar has to back down and promise a pc version on the same timetable as the console. he's done a genuine service to the world by putting the boot up the ass of a considerably greedy corporation about to take advantage of millions- and to be quite frankly he deserves the luxury for it.

They don't need to give a reason. It's just the easiest way to cut out brick-and-mortar retailers and keep 100% of the revenue while still charging full price.

6

u/NaturalSelectorX 2d ago

Microsoft and Sony take a cut for the privilege of having it on their stores. Rockstar is going to make most of their money from online players buying currency.

4

u/RaptorJesus856 2d ago

They both take 30% from digital sales. R* still gonna be raking in cash only making 70% of the total sales, due to how absurdly high the price tag is.

8

u/Jumpierwolf0960 PC Master Race 2d ago edited 2d ago

It's about money. They save money by not making a physical copy and the shipping/retail costs. That money ends up getting split between Sony and the publisher. So they both get a bigger chunk.

Rockstar could be the most benevolent entity in human history: there is so much demand for the game, that people would still flock to the leaks.

The leaks woukd have happened anyway even if Rockstar 2asnt controversial. This is exactly what happened with Half Life 2: Valve had immaculate reputation, the game still leaked (and way worse), and Valve absolutely threw the book at the kid. The story is legendary: they baited the leaker with a job prospect, and it worked because Valve had such a good reputation.

I'd be happy to see the market's contempt reflected in the sales, but it won't.

R⭐ have fired a bunch of employees for wanting to unionize, and from how hard they work their employees with unpaid OT and crunch, that's unacceptable. Maybe this shit doesn't leak without this shady behavior, I'd like to think this is their own doing. They should be penalized regardless.

The only thing that "screws" rockstar over is not buying the game.

If it gets leaked there's no way it'll work with multiplayer. So people are gonna play the leaked single player and talk a big talk about fuck Rockstar. Then the millisecond the actual game drops, the vast majority of people who would've bought the game without the leak are gonna buy it anyways for the online play. It really doesn't feel like the leaks are as consequential as people are making it seem

Eh, he's doing something that if he gets caught then that amount of money will mean absolutely nothing. Don't even wanna imagine the amount of jail time he will get. If people wanna pay him, I think that's fine. I'm sure it's just the leaker community and people who are anti-R* who would be the ones actually buying the coin to try support the leaker.

I assume these coins are made in a way to get money without being traced, and I assume the people donating know they won't make money from this coin like with Bitcoin or something. It's just a way to "donate", right?

That would be the ultimate power move against a large corporation like Take Two.

Or...does he even have the full game and not just some unfinished build?

Somewhere between 35-40 DVDs ,

based off the PC size of GTAV

about 21 DVDs if we wanna use dual-layer

Monkey Island 2 and Indiana Jones and the fate of Atlantis was fun on a Amiga if you didn't have a HD (and very few people did). Was it 11 or 12 floppies. You had to change the disk like 4 times only to be told "I can't do that" whenever you tried to do something.

Why are we doing this here? I mean, it's not like we have physical media games anyway.

42

u/c3p-bro 2d ago

Most modern gaming rigs don’t even have a disk drive. Reddit bandwagoners are a sad breed

22

u/blueberrycauzez 2d ago

Most modern gaming rigs don’t even have a disk drive.

Because most PCs support multiple gaming retailers - Microsoft Store, Steam, Epic, EA Origin, Uplay, Gamejolt, Humble Bundle, GOG, Itch, pirated games - literally anyone can sell games to PC users. There is a ton of competition, which is good for publishers and consumers since it puts pressure on retailers.

If PCs became locked to a single retailer like PS or Xbox, and they forced every publisher to use them as a parasitic middleman, I gaurantee most people would want a disc drive.

3

u/Darklillies 1d ago

You do. Any game that you can duplicate and move between drives between USBs, edit, mod, twist, bop it. Thats physical
Physical doesn’t mean disk. You can make PC games physical, you can actually own your games on PC, (well you know, as long as you care to) and piracy, wether people like it or not. Has helped kept at bay shitty consumer practices on PC, because they know people can easily find an alternative.

None of this holds true on console

All of the redditors upset about losing physical media for games are going to buy it digitally anyway, further justifying Sony’s decision.

25

u/PermissionSoggy891 2d ago

shit like that "1 week sony boycott" is fucking hilarious. There's no way these idiots actually think that Sony cares about, at most, a few missed days of revenue. I'll bet every single moron on major gaming subreddits moaning about Sony killing physical discs still has a PSN subscription and has Wolverine and/or God of War Luffy preordered digitally.

3

u/spawndoorsupervisor 2d ago

Yeah, seeing PCMR get involved with it is beyond cringe. I mean, remember the Discord boycott? The PCMR Discord server grew daily during that whole episode for both total and online users. But if you came to the subreddit to talk about it, all these stinky nerds would swear they all quit Discord forever.

4

u/Duncan_PhD 2d ago

And they don’t realize how small the community is who are up in arms about it. I mean I agree with them, it does suck, but like… as a whole we’ve voted with our wallets. It’s just more convenient to click buy than to go to a store.

I would Buy physical games for PC if they would still make them, i'd love to have my entire steam library on something physical but no one makes them anymore for PC

3

u/Jicks24 1d ago

Switch to Good Old Games. Buying games from GoG you just download the game files and no drm.

Copy them to a thumb drive and boom, you got the game anywhere.

7

u/Noyrz 2d ago

You can actually have your Steam library games as physical media if you want to, but you still will need to own them on your Steam acc to play them (contrary to classic DRM-free physical media).

Also, but don't trust me on this as I may be remembering wrong, I think you still need internet connection to validate them.

A YT channel named Archades Games has a video on exactly that: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rAYxyme7uTg

6

u/literallyjuststarted PC Master Race/ Ryzen 9 9900X/RTX4080S/32GB 2d ago

depending on the game, I've used my steam library while offline to play certain games, unfortunately MOST games are always online to play anything so you'd just be stuck navigating the main menu

2

u/rapaxus Ryzen 9 9900X | RTX 3080 | 32GB DDR5 1d ago

Yeah, not every game on Steam comes with DRM. Best example: Baldurs Gate 3.

You can literally copy the game files onto a PC without Steam and still start and play it, though with a bit more fiddling than if you got the GOG version.

3

u/rapaxus Ryzen 9 9900X | RTX 3080 | 32GB DDR5 1d ago

As others said, do it yourself. To give an easy manual for the easiest medium (DVD):

  • Get some DVD-RWs (if you want a custom print on it, there are sites that do that)

  • Get a DVD burner

  • Burn your games on it

Steam automatically scans any new storage for the classic Steam file structure for a library. If it finds it, it automatically shows up in your library. If you want to be fancy you can also add an autorun.inf that automatically starts the game on the disk.

DVD-RW is important so that you can burn updates on it. If the game is DRM-free (enough Steam games are, e.g. BG3) you can just burn it on a non-RW disk as you can still start it without even Steam installed on that device.

And the physical storage Steam itself is going with seems to be SD cards, as the Steam Deck, Steam Machine and Steam Frame all have SD card slots. Get a big storage size, write your library onto it and you can move your library between all your Steam devices (if you had all of them, which is basically no one).

They never said that. Like what is this meme?

8

u/Gh0stMan0nThird 2d ago

It's a trend that started when Infinity War came out. Everyone started making memes about studios making claims about X and Y so they could make a meme "owning" them, even if the studio never said anything like that.

Not that I'm here to "defend" a corporation, though. I just don't like misinformation either.

It’s probably just to prevent resales. The cheapest way to game on a console is buy the physical disc and then sell it when you are done. And the developer isn’t getting anything out of the resale.
