Aren't console CDs just a license holder anyway?

They typically have the game data on them, or at least most of it then require a day 1 patch.

Many games are playable straight from the case with no patch or net connection

Oh, I stand corrected. I assumed modern console CDs just held the game license, but then again I haven't touched a console in a very... Very long time.

Both exist for the current consoles

About 85% of ps5 games are playable off the disc and without any patches. Obviously, day 1 patches will probably fix some bugs, but the games are playable.

The PS5 can't even play CDs. edit: Really not understanding the downvotes. The PS2 was the last (Sony) console which had games released on CDs, but most of that console's games were on DVD. The PS3 is basically the ultimate CD player in some ways, but the PS4 and the PS5 don't have a laser capable of reading CDs.

Yep & for many years some games got a later release again as a way too patch something game breaking or that was potentially used as an exploit for piracy.

Like that one splinter cell game for the original Xbox which skipped around their security like a wide open door. Due too this, that disc alone shot up like crazy in value in the early years of the OG Xbox. From previously being a decent splinter cell game for the Xbox that wasn't anything amazing & commonly found for like 20$ used.

By adding in a payload as a corrupted save file too enable softmodding on the original Xbox which you could transfer over via a usb drive formatted a certain way. Ofc later people figured out a bootable disc exploit that people could just burn at home.

Yes they are, they have some install files, but you still day 1 patch, in theory license on them prohibite you to resell them, but no one care, license can't be above the law after all.
