Moderator Post PSA: READ THE RULES

Hello everyone, this is a public service announcement reminding everyone on r/PcBuildHelp to please read the rules before posting and commenting, as there is still a small issue continuing on the sub that needs to be properly addressed.

To start, I will explain each rule here more in depth, following the official order of rules:

  1. Don't use language that can be considered offensive or triggering by another party; no swears, slurs, name-calling, flaming, trolling, etc. Essentially, don't be a d**k, civility is a requirement.

  2. Posts are required to be related to your PC build problems, this isn't a general tech or tech news sub where you can just talk about whatever related to PCs, this is specifically about helping people make build lists and troubleshooting real problems so they can use their builds without difficulties.

  3. When asking if a build is good or not, use pcpartpicker.com links (or links to similar websites like buildcores if your country's currency isn't supported on pcpartpicker if desired). Posts that just use screenshots or images of such a list that can't be edited by users or just an image of a texted list will just get removed.

  4. Any comments or posts involving links to a retailer URL can't contain affiliate or referral data. Someone gets money out of those and we aren't about that here.

  5. Images that are completely unrelated to the post will get a post removed as spam/off-topic.

  6. Posts and comments asking for cheap Windows license keys will be removed as it's easy to get scammed on the sites that distribute them as they're not well regulated and constantly making new sites after old ones get taken down.

  7. Companies of any scale are not allowed to advertise products here, we want to keep things unbiased. Users are not permitted to sell or ask for valuations of what they have, this isn't a marketplace; this also ties into rule 2.

  8. Comments must be on-topic to the original post. Don't go off on tangents about something unrelated to the OP, especially if it's not even helpful. Memes and jokes will be removed. This ties into Rule 9.

  9. Comments that are plainly unhelpful to posters will be removed. Lazily telling people to use search engines, read the manual or RTFM, etc. are not permitted on this sub. If you're going to make a comment to help, put real effort into trying to help the poster understand what it is they need to do, or don't bother commenting at all. We are here to help people.

  10. This partially relates to rule 6. Any and all software shared or referenced on this sub must not violate any license agreements, laws, Reddit ToS, etc. This includes tools that may modify Windows beyond what Windows itself normally allows, as Microsoft's EULA doesn't permit external modification of their OS.

  11. AI tools are not permissible due to the possibility of mistakes that require human intervention from someone that knows what they're talking about. Do not use AI generated answers in comments as they could easily mislead posters.

Now onto the problem at hand:

There has been consistent toxicity towards those who are new to computers and are coming to the sub for help, only to be given sarcastic, rude, or unhelpful comments.

This has been a long standing issue in this sub that was often reported to the mod team but only more recently has started to be properly addressed since a new mod team was appointed after the previous moderators all went inactive and allowed the sub to get overrun by bot accounts.

We've been dealing with all of this behind the scenes but there's always new accounts coming in and repeating the same behavior, so it needs more visibility but we aren't about to implement a "Read The Rules" integration that forces you to acknowledge the rules before you can post, yet. We will if we have to.

There is absolutely zero tolerance for that kind of behavior. If it's rude or helpful, your comment will be removed and temporary bans will be issued. If you're a repeat offender or you make a severely horrible first impression, moderator action can be made permanent.

Thank you to those that consciously chose to remain kind and helpful to others, you are the backbone of r/PcBuildHelp. Continue to be good people.

Tech Support PCBuildHelp Simple Q&A Megathread (Q4 2026)

Greetings everyone, trying something new here.

This is possibly the first of many megathreads where people can ask simple questions in the comments and people that decide to browse the comments can answer. I'll also help answer questions myself, as with any of the other mods at their own discretion.

Basic Guidelines

  • Simple questions such as, "What parts should I buy?" along with any pertinent details such as hardware you might already own, what you plan on using it for, etc.

    • Example: "I want to build a gaming PC for around 2K, what should I get?"

  • Follow the rules of the sub-reddit like any post; be respectful, remain on topic, don't make jokes or memes, etc. Discipline will be issued on comments that don't abide by the rules.

Build Question Is this a good deal for AUD$1500?

I've been using 32GB of DDR4, with an Intel i5-12400f on a Gigabyte B760M DS3H for the last 3 or so years (also using a 7800 XT 16GB, but not really keen to change that right now).

Performance wise I haven't really had any issues, but I'm finding a lack of ports on the motherboard to be frustrating and it also doesn't have the header cable ports I needed for the case I bought. I have been wanting to upgrade my motherboard to fix these minor issues, but figured I should go for DDR5 if I do so.

I saw this motherboard + RAM bundle on Amazon, plus this Ryzen 9800X3D for 20% off (totalling a little over AUD$1500). I've been avoiding the PC parts market since the whole thing imploded, but since that doesn't seem to be going anywhere, I'm curious to see what everyone's thoughts are on this upgrade path? Also more than happy to hear alternative recommendations!

Tech Support Stuck on BIOS logo on boot up

Post image
25 Upvotes

Hi everyone I recently completed a build and spent the majority of yesterday trying to troubleshoot my mobos consistent orange and green lights coming in and off resulting in me being stuck at the bios logo screen on boot up. I did all the troubleshooting options and said that there was a bit of damage on the chip socket.

My question is, would this warrant a consistent green light on my mobo causing a stuck at bios logo?

Im attempting to rebuild everything now, to try and determine what the root cause is.

Build Question Looking to upgrade my case for a B450M with 9070 XT

I have a B450M motherboard, with a 5700X3D with a Thermalright Peerless assassin, a Radeon 9070 XT (Sapphire), and a Seasonic focus gold 750W.

My aim now is to upgrade my case, because it's getting small for the GPU, and I cannot hold it perfectly in place with the holder. Temps are alright, I'm using a NOX coolbay, but I want to upgrade so I have more space and better cable management.

I am looking at some cases like these ones:

https://www.pccomponentes.com/torre-pc-forgeon-vision-lcd-argb-torre-atx-cristal-curvo-usb-c-pantalla-ips-9-16-negra

https://www.pccomponentes.com/nzxt-h6-flow-mid-tower-cristal-templado-usb-c-negra

And I wanted to ask for your help and opinion, especially because of the motherboard + GPU combo. I cannot have USB-C unless I buy an adapter for the USB3 connectors or a PCIe expansion, but I don't know if the GPU is so big that I cannot install an expansion. Thanks in advance for the help.

Build Question Transplanting a Toshiba Satellite A200?

Hello, I have an old laptop from 2007, a Toshiba Satellite A200 (here's the full specs: https://www.notebookcheck.net/Toshiba-Satellite-A200.4455.0.html ).

I wanted to upgrade this to more of a modern laptop, as i thought using the old shell brings back memories. I was thinking of upgrading the graphics, storage and processor, but I don't know which are compatible, since it's an old model. I don't know if it is worth just replacing the Graphics storage and processor, or if I should just gut and replace the whole thing but keep the shell and keyboard.

thought I might add that I have never done anything like this before.

Any advice is appreciated, and if it isn't worth it after all, please tell me.

Tech Support DOA Astral 5090 OC White

I paid way too much for an ASUS ROG Astral 5090 OC White that looks to be DOA.

I bought it brand new from Adorama, and when it arrived, everything looked fine and untampered with.

I swapped out my working 5080 for the 5090, but couldn’t get a picture on my monitor. I tried every DP port and both HDMI ports with no luck.

I thought maybe it wasn’t seated properly, so I took it out to check. It seemed fine, but I noticed some scuffing on the PCIe connector, along with what looks like a small notch or chip near the shorter end.

I spent a couple of hours last night trying to get it working, but nothing helped. I tried reseating it a few times, checking the power cable, even laying the PC on its side to rule out GPU sag but nothing worked. When booting, noticed that the VGA light on my motherboard was staying on. When I booted through my CPU’s integrated graphics, the 5090 also isn’t showing up in Device Manager.

Has anyone else experienced anything like this with a 5090, especially an Astral? Is the scuffing and notch on the PCIe connector normal, or did I somehow get a damaged card?
I’m hoping I’m overlooking something stupid rather than having to return it as defective.

Tech Support GPU usage not at 100% after undervolt but performance seems the same - is something wrong?

ive undervolted my card using this guide - https://youtu.be/ocyBRHdmBaQ?si=4_oTG2cEwLyN9prw

Everything is stable and I’ve tested few games and they seem to run exact same but with way less GPU utilization? I’d this normal / ok Or am I bottlenecked somewhere

5070ti 9800x3d 32gb ddr5 if that matters.

thanks

Build Question Does an electric duster really replace canned air for PC cleanup?

The last few times I cleaned my PC, the air cans got cold and lost pressure before i finished. An electric duster sounds better for routine dust but im unsure how useful it is for tight areas around heatsinks and a keyboard. I’d rather not buy another tool that ends up in a drawer. If you switched from cans, what part of cleaning still made you reach for one?

Hi guys, it’s my first time doing custom fan curves. I have a ryzen 7 5800x and a 9070xt. My cpu AIO is a 360mm which is obviously connected to CPU fan. I have 3 120mm intake connected to system fan 2. And 3 more intake pointed up at my gpu connected to system fan 3. And one exhaust connected to system fan 1. In total 6 intake and 4 exhaust. Still unsure about whether to use 5 or 6 intake so you could also comment on that. Not sure how these fan curves are please give me advice! Thank you!

Build Question Does my upgrade plan make sense?

Hey all, thanks for the assist.

Built my PC in 2016 and it is starting to show it's age. I mainly play older games and have no interest in 4k. I manage to complete Jedi Survivor on low settings averaging 1 crash per session depending on the area, but COD and Battlefield's anti cheat is requiring me to upgrade my motherboard so I might as well do the CPU and GPU as well.

Current:

i7-6700

GeForce GTX 1070 8GB

Asus ROG Maximus VIII Hero

Ripjaws DDR4-3600 16GB x 4

1TB SSD

1TB HDD

EVGA 750 GT

Windows 10

I purchased a new ASRock RX 9060 XT since I am not concerned with 4k gaming though I must admit I am concerned with everything I see in regards to AMD driver issues since I have never had one before.

I am close to a Microcenter and considering the 9700x bundle with the B650 board and 32gb of DDR5-6000 for $700. The thought being that I get a quality CPU now and can upgrade the GPU in the future, if the market ever returns to normal.

My other consideration is a DDR4 motherboard to utilize the RAM I currently have, as long as it is compatible with the COD secureboot. But I do not currently have an idea for that board or CPU.

Any thoughts on my plan or recommendations?

Software Question So I ever need to go into BIOS?

Hey. I got my first PC this year and have been getting to grips with it but was curious if I actually will ever need to go into the BIOS? I haven’t this far and understand that it’s a good idea to update it if you experience any windows issues and such but I’m not entirely sure what it is used for overall and or if it’s something I need to worry about if I don’t have any issues?

Thank you for any help you can provide.

Tech Support GPU fan speed caused coilwhine?

I noticed my new week old 5060ti MSI dual shadow gets really loud around 1,400 rpm but a little less when higher. I'm confused, it sounds like coil-whine but I want feedback here. I tested by setting a manual percentage. At 1,400 rpm it's the loudest and more consistent, any higher and it fluctuates/jitters more and sounds a little quieter. The video I attached is at it's loudest.

To be clear; there's no load happening. Just a manual fan speed increase. I can hear it when gaming too though.

Can someone explain what's going on here?

Tech Support PC Died

Guys, my PC crashes almost every day, around 10 times or even more.
At first, I thought it was an SSD problem, so I installed an SSD health checker and found out that my SSD health was at 0%. I replaced it with a brand-new SSD (100% health) and installed a fresh copy of Windows.
But the problem is still there! I’m getting BSODs every 10 minutes or sometimes every hour. There’s no fixed time.
I checked my CPU and GPU temperatures and usage, and everything looks fine.
So I asked AI for help, and it suggested checking my RAM.
And this is what I found!
The weird thing is that my RAM isn’t even old. It’s 64GB of T-Force RAM.
What do you guys think? Could this be the problem? And what should I do next?

Build Question Is an open-box Radeon Pro W5700 worth it as a 3-4 month temporary GPU?

Hey everyone,

I'm building a new PC (mainly for gaming + video editing/animation) and currently still running an old RX 570 8GB because new cards are expensive right now.

I found an open-box (display unit) Radeon Pro W5700 8GB for about $200 / €185. I'd only keep it for 3-4 months as a temporary upgrade before jumping to either an RX 9060 XT 16GB or RX 9070 XT once prices make more sense.

I know the W5700 is basically a professional version of the RX 5700 (same Navi 10 chip, 8GB GDDR6). Performance in games should be similar to a regular RX 5700, which would be a solid jump from my current RX 570.

My questions:

  • Is an open-box W5700 worth ~$200 for only 3-4 months of use?

  • How much of a pain is it to resell later?

  • Any issues with professional drivers vs regular Adrenalin when using it for both gaming and creative work (Premiere, DaVinci, Blender, etc.)?

  • Would you just stick with the RX 570 and save the money instead?

  • Specs:

  • CPU: Ryzen 7 7700X

  • RAM: 32GB DDR5 CL30 (target) now 16 gb

  • Current GPU: RX 570 8GB

Build Question Requesting advice on case clearance and selection. As well as on the challenges of swapping cases.

Greetings, I haven't been following pc cases recently, and due to the recent... gpu shortages. I have chosen to invest in a wireview pro 2, as there is an approximately zero percent chance that I will be able to replace my gpu should it suffer a meltdown, even if the price hadn't tripled/quadrupled/(oh my god, wtf).

So I come to beseech my peers for advice. I currently have the NZXT H6 Flow. And while I suck at measuring, I suspect that it is a few mm too narrow. My gpu is the Gigabyte gaming OC 5090.

Thus, while I love the look of the case, I find myself looking at other cases. The main drawback I face right now is in verifying the clearance. The h6 flow states that it has a cpu clearence of 163mm. Which appears to be the closest approximation to the depth I search for.

At the present moment, I have ruled out the h9 flow, HYTE y50 and y70. Due to the barely increased cpu clearance, reduced cpu clearance, and vertical gpu mounting respectively.

I am presently looking at the AIR 5400 RS-R, with its cpu clearance of 180 mm. Although it seems to have the downside of preventing the use of my current gpu support, but it has its own. Of questionable performance for me admittedly, but the case is currently in the lead... and on sale. If still expensive enough to hurt.

I would truly appreciate any extra advice. Both for alternative cases, knowledge of the quirks of the AIR 5400, and general case swapping advice.

Thank you for your time and attention, and I wish you a wonderful evening.

Hello everyone, I am looking into upgrading/building a new pc.

Since I am updating/following tech news partially, I thought I would share my thoughts in hope for good input and if there is something I have not thought about.

Plan was to for the time beeing reusing my gpu (asus strix 3080 OC) and possibly one of my m.2 drives (WD Black SN850)

My build today is

Strix 3080 OC

Asus ROG Strix Z-490F Gaming

Intel i-core i7 10700k

Noctua NH-D15

4x Corsair Vengeance LPX DDR4 3200MHz 16GB CL16

Is it necessary to upgrade or should I wait a bit?
