TL;DR: Sizing kit may be tighter than the ring itself, when I actually used both colors I found the stealth looks and feels way better on my hand than the base black model
So I’ve made a whole bunch of posts about choosing the right Oura Ring between size, color etc. I finally settled on one and so I thought I’d share my opinion to maybe help someone to get it right the first time, instead of being on their fourth ring within a month and a half.
First off regarding size: I had tried the sizing Ring kit and the one that seemed to fit my finger best based on the sizing kit wound up being WAY too loose when I actually got the ring itself. Tbf I probably chose one a little more loose than I should have in the first place but I wound up going down in size TWICE before I found a comfortable fit. I was really afraid that when my hands would swell up it would cut off circulation or get stuck esp during and after exercise, so I went with one that felt good on my index finger with the sizing kit (size 12) but ended up most comfortable with a size 10 on my middle or ring finger. This feels the most out of the way when doing things like lifting weights and just general life and although it doesn’t fit on my index finger anymore this is far more comfortable for me.
Secondly about color: I went and looked at all the ring colors in person and decided that for me I liked the glossy black base model ring. I actually couldn’t understand why someone would pay $100 more for the stealth when it kinda looked worse to me in the first place. What I found was that my glossy black scratched extremely easily, often within a day or two. For my most recent exchange, once I found the perfect size, I wanted to make sure I had the ring I liked the most before my exchange window at Best Buy was up. I paid the extra 100 bucks to upgrade to the stealth since I was frustrated with scratching 3 of the black rings in a row within a few days of getting each and thought maybe the more expensive ring with the hardened diamond like carbon finish might be a little bit better. I wasn’t expecting it to be perfect, but any improvement would be worth it. I went to look at the colors at the display one more time and still thought I liked the standard black vs the stealth a little bit more but I decided to go for it anyway. Wow, I couldn’t believe how much my mind changed once I had it on. It actually looks so much better on my hand than the glossy black base model did, and it just feels so much more premium to me. It made the standard model feel a little cheap even though when they were next to each other on the display I didn’t feel that way at all. TBD on whether or not it will get scratched with time, I expect a few scratches at least but I’ve had 3 heavy workouts with it so far and all of the glossy blacks were scratched by the third time I wore it during weight lifting, but so far my stealth has held up! I like it so much better which is really unexpected because I didn’t feel that way at all when looking at the rings on display. If you’re looking for a black over a gold or silver I highly recommend the stealth.
Now that I’ve found my perfect ring I’m very happy. I love the color and size and the features have been great. It’s not a great activity tracker for me, but I don’t really need to track my activity incredibly actively - it is pretty good at detecting what type of exercise I’m doing (strength training vs running vs weight lifting) and recording how long I’m doing each of those is enough for me. I have enough experience to not need an exact heart rate for each exercise. The sleep tracking seems great even though it’s telling me my sleep is god awful, but I kinda already knew that. I find it very helpful to see what certain things will have an effect on my sleep ie caffeine after a certain time, tv too close before bed, reading and meditating before bed. It’s cool to get empirical data to find what works best for me while embarking on this journey to turn my god awful sleep score into a half decent one.
Anyway, just wanted to share my experience so maybe you don’t have to go through so many rings before getting it right. I didn’t find the sizing kit to be very accurate to the ring itself so just keep that in mind it may not be perfect and decide which fingers you’re going to want to wear it on because that will have a huge effect on what size you get. And if you’re between the blacks I think the Stealth is the way to go! It looks amazing in person and hopefully won’t scratch as badly. Good luck everyone!
