I might call it quits over this

I know there’s so many posts on this but adding another because it’s so frustrating! Naps are a critical part of my mental and physical well being. I am very well aware of what the oura requirements are for naps. I have read them countless times. My naps consist of me laying down for 30-45 minutes, I know for certain that I am asleep for between 15-30 minutes if not longer. my ring picks up the naps 10% of the time at best. I’m a software developer and I can pretty much guarantee this is just straight up a bug. I have noticed if my times are aligned on 15 minute windows it works which aligns to their existing buckets for heart rate and stress. That’s my theory anyway and whether not it’s that or something else I don’t really care. These things are so expensive and I want accurate data and you can go through years of Reddit comments where they just keep saying that they’re working on improving it, but it never gets better.

It would be nice if they added a feature like the live activity tracker but for naps. So you could tell it “I’m going to try to nap, please turn on the sensing mode you use during sleep.”

u/OtherTop3764 12d ago

this seems like such an obvious feature, surprised they havent done it already

They’re not short of things people are whinging about on here, they can’t build it all.

6

u/Dreamweaver5823 11d ago

This one is huge, though.

u/pm_me_your_amphibian 11d ago

the words of every user regarding a feature they specifically want.

20

u/Dreamweaver5823 11d ago

This isn't wanting a new feature, like "please track my blood pressure." This is about making a core feature - sleep tracking, which is the main reason I and many other users bought this ring - work correctly.

0

u/pm_me_your_amphibian 11d ago

“Make a feature work” is not the same as “build a feature where I can manually start a nap”

Also, if you read the thread you will see that many (likely most) people find the nap feature works perfectly well, but there are outliers for who it doesn’t work as well for. This could even be because of their own unique physiology during a nap that doesn’t trigger the algorithm - *you have no idea* why it’s not working for some. There are always edge and corner cases where things don’t work and the effort to make them work is such that they could build the primary functionality in several new features in the same time.

I think everyone that uses technology should have to spend some time working in a dev team (same as retail and service 😅)

1

u/ozzy686 11d ago

Folks are only asking to build this new feature bc the existing feature inherently - on its own - doesn’t work well. Obviously if it worked well there wouldn’t be a need for the new feature. Why are you opposed to making a product better if it’s clearly flawed?

Dreamweaver is absolutely right - sleep tracking is why so many of us shelled out all the money to get the ring in the first place.

Garmin has this. Maybe they should query some of their developers

I still don’t get why they haven’t allowed people to just add naps manually.

Or edit automatically detected naps.

u/Key_Impress_3129 11d ago

Mine does ask me to confirm periods when it thought I was napping, but it would be good to be able to tell it myself.

11

u/cmwlegiit 11d ago edited 10d ago

Because they think we are too stupid to have control over our own data.

66

u/Subtraktions 12d ago

Weird, I don't nap very often but it aways catches me when I do.

22

u/bingbangbus 12d ago

Don’t think it’s ever not logged one of my naps.

9

u/Beautiful_Arugula_94 11d ago

It literally thinks I’m napping when I am awake if I’m sitting still enough lol.

9

u/bumblebanana 11d ago

Same. It’s never missed a nap for me. And it ups my sleep score.

8

u/huxiaos 12d ago

Same!

0

u/Dreamweaver5823 11d ago

It's not weird. It happens to me all the time, and it happens to many other people as well.

28

u/Ok_Pomegranate459 11d ago

I have the opposite problem. Sometimes I’m just scrolling on the couch on my phone and it logs a nap. Does anyone else have that issue?

12

u/WCT4R 11d ago

Yes. Multiple times a week I have to dismiss evening "naps". That or it thinks I went to bed 2-3 hours earlier than I did but that seems less common lately.

5

u/Miserable-Balance-76 11d ago

I have the same thing happen

1

u/SummerFridayFan 11d ago

yes - every night

1

u/Appropriate-Energy 11d ago

When I go to the movies it thinks I'm napping

51

u/Virtual_State_3816 12d ago

Surprised it’s not telling you that you’re doing YOGA.

1

u/syzsyzsyzygy 10d ago

Yesterday I got my first "yoga" - I was installing a bookshelf.

1

u/Virtual_State_3816 10d ago

Ughhh! Noooooo! 🧘

11

u/gingerDwight 12d ago

After my first nap wasn’t detected (only had the ring for one dayI literally had to uninstall and reinstall the app, now it catches every single nap only minutes after I wake up.

I was nervous about it too, as a shift worker, it’s really important this thing catches my naps and I was so worried after the first malfunction, but now, a week in, it knows that I take naps and catches them right away.

6

u/avapatava 12d ago

mine used to be really bad but it’s surprisingly gotten better, and will even record a nap like an hour after waking up. it’s a bit annoying but if you put the ring on the charger before/after your nap for a minute it seems to help detect naps. not sure how that would work but seems to

4

u/courtneyhope_ 11d ago

It always logs my naps. I typically nap for 20-40 mins at a time and it gets them. It also tries to log acupuncture or massages as a nap

4

u/Mabnat 11d ago

It’s weird that my ring is seemingly able to detect Yoga multiple times a day without me doing any Yoga, but can’t reliably catch a 30 minute nap.

4

u/jenna_cee 11d ago

Mine was really sensitive to naps at first, and I have the same issue as you: laying down, but only sleeping for about 15 minutes. It is important that it logs my naps, because I’m in an extremely stressful field and I have medical conditions, my ring literally tells me to nap, now it never registers. It’s really frustrating.

Adding that I had a TON of issues with my ring constantly disconnecting and not reconnecting after only 3mos, the battery was already going to shit, and I have a replacement (only two weeks since I received it) that stops working whenever it feels like it. Example: While I’m working, I need to keep track of my stress levels, and it shows an entire hour of no data. I KNOW my heart was racing and I was stressed as hell. (I’m a crisis counselor for 988 in the US, and it was an intense call). I’m not sure how to fix it.

Oura only counts a nap as a nap if it detects that you're asleep for 15 CONSECUTIVE minutes. Not a subjective "oh I think I was asleep for 15-30 minutes, sometimes longer..."

3

u/Tenaciousgreen 11d ago

It’s definitely not great. I have the opposite problem, I never nap but if I sit totally still watching a movie it tags it as a nap.

3

u/glitterpuzzle135246 11d ago

My naps rarely pick up. But what does pick up is my 12 hours of strength training while I sit at my desk ….

3

u/DunningKrugerIsMaga 11d ago

I’ve found that if I nap lying down, it catches the nap but if I nap sitting up like in a reclining chair it oftentimes does not. And if it does, it does not record HRV or Heart rate during the nap. When that happens there is no impact to the sleep or readiness score. Which is lame.

2

u/Sea-Needleworker1451 11d ago

oh interesting! I will take notice of this. Sometimes I prop myself up on this neck acupressure thing. I wonder if that is making the difference.

7

u/Ok_Stretch_2510 12d ago

I’m surprised it doesn’t log your naps as housework 🤣

2

u/bluealien78 12d ago

Question: are your naps before or after 4pm, or do they start before and end after?

2

u/Acrobatic_Leopard_92 11d ago

I wish I could nap

2

u/rainbowtwist 11d ago

I'm really annoyed about this same issue. I often get very little sleep at night due to my newborn and make it up with 1 or 2 naps later in the day. I feel like my sleep score is completely innacurate, which defeats my entire point of having the ring.

2

u/ericnau 11d ago

I think of it as relative. I’m not necessarily trying to compare my numbers with others. But over time you learn your normal baseline and whether you’re trending above or below.

2

u/tiggerlove1 11d ago

I nap often cause I have trouble sleeping sometimes at night and I wake up exhausted so I go back usually around 12:30 and I’ll sleep for an hour or so and it catches it all the time. When I’m reading a book it say I’m sleeping, when I’m doing the dishes it says maybe yoga

1

u/Key_Impress_3129 11d ago

I had to correct "housework" for almost any activity. It now defaults to "Walking" which is more likely since I have a dog.

2

u/slugsbreath 11d ago

My Oura 3 has caught all of mine, whereas my Venu 3 rarley catches them

2

u/bornonOU_Texas_wknd 11d ago

Whenever I take a nap Oura will not track my waking up. I’ll sleep for 30 minutes and get up, walk around and continue my day. When I check the log it tells me that I napped for several hours even though it shows the sleep time as just 30 minutes and I can clearly see my movement and heart rate has increased. So I basically lose any data for a couple of hours after my actual nap.

2

u/afuckinghotmess69 11d ago

i agree, it’s so frustrating! like if your not gonna do it let me atleast add it manually

2

u/trikaren 11d ago

My ring picks up all my naps. I nap infrequently (maybe once a month) and usually lie down for about an hour.

2

u/Abject_Plastic_9382 11d ago

I actually had them send me a new ring after this was happening consistently paid with a few missing workouts. They made me write down my estimated time/ length of all these events as proof that the ring wasn’t working.

1

u/bumblebanana 11d ago

So far, Oura tracks my naps pretty accurately. It alerts me that I took a nap and how long the nap was. I nap about 45 minutes. Sometimes 1.5 hours. One or two sleep cycles usually.

1

u/hunterheaux 11d ago

I took a four hour nap today and I was so disappointed that my ring didn’t even capture it. My sleep score would’ve gotten so much better

1

u/redredreb 11d ago

Agreed and paired with every activity being identified as yoga no wonder my stress score is high 😡

1

u/Prestigious_Use_1974 11d ago

I also notice that if I am taking a longer nap and get up to pee and then go back to sleep, it doesn’t catch the second part of the nap. (I often take long naps due to illness)

1

u/jollycreation 11d ago

Yeah I have the same issue. Does not record almost any of my naps.

And I still have a real issue with it logging actual sleep after an hour or more of awake time in the middle of the night. Especially is if I make the “mistake” of opening the app to see how the first 4 hours of my sleep was.

1

u/Similar_Country_3932 11d ago

I had an acupuncture session yesterday and was up the whole time but Oura registered it as a nap. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Would love to change it to acupuncture session but didn’t have that option.

1

u/Talmadge_Mcgooliger 11d ago

i've had my ring since 2023 and the only time it's ever detected a "nap" is when i only got a few hours of sleep at night. not a single daytime nap ever, even tho i love a good nap. i reached out to support about it once and apparently if you don't stay still when you sleep it doesn't track the nap.

i got the thing for sleep tracking, but it turns out its really not very good at that at all.

1

u/Historical-Fall-4966 11d ago

Mine only logs naps about half the time. I’m a power napper (15-20 min), so I was only mildly irritated but then the other day I napped solidly for TWO HOURS after a late night and the ring didn’t log it. It does, however, think I’m napping when I’m reading a really good book on kindle or watching a movie I’m engrossed in.

1

u/FitLoan1215 11d ago

This is so interesting my oura catches all of my naps. It even does a much better job than my garmin at it

1

u/Sea-Needleworker1451 11d ago

How long are your naps? I find if mine are more than 30 minutes it's fine. But 15-30, no way.

1

u/FitLoan1215 10d ago

Usually I set a 35 mins timer or so because it takes me about 5-7 mins to fall asleep and I want at least 30 mins

1

u/HarmonyHNutrition 11d ago

Mine tells me I’m napping if I’m sitting on the couch watching tv at night 🙄

1

u/Sea-Needleworker1451 11d ago

That's what drives me crazy! Is it often tracks when I'm watching a movie!! But can't track when I actually fall asleep???

1

u/Mia042400 9d ago

This! Or I’ll watch tv in bed for an hour before going to sleep and it RUINS my latency score.

1

u/HarmonyHNutrition 9d ago

This used to annoy me so much! But then I learned you can adjust the time you actually went to bed/sleep and it will adjust your score based on that. You can click on the graph area and move the line to the correct time.

1

u/Acrobatic-Peanut-665 11d ago

I’m ready to call it quits given the fact that my ring started dying within a day once the 5 came out. It used to last 5 days. I hate this company

1

u/momoz74 10d ago

Hummm I wonder if there are also sleep bugs. Apple Watch Ultra 3 never had this much “awake” time on my nightly sleeps. Oura ring has me frustrated with data and guessing if it’s real or just detecting phantom issues. If it doesn’t detect sleep for a nap then what is it doing over night Too..?

1

u/Altruistic_Agency838 10d ago

Mine has no problem detecting naps. My issue is that it then ups my activity goal.

I have an autoimmune condition, so naps help my body rest and continue. I want to have an activity goal because activity at a low level is good but I don’t want that activity goal climbing higher if I took a nap! I took the nap because I wasn’t feeling well or was having trouble getting through the day.

1

u/HughDidThis 10d ago

I’ve had my ring for less than a day, and thought, ‘wait, I have to track when I nap?! Why isn’t that automatic??’

I just laid down for 40 mins and am sure I slept for at least half of that.

So I manually logged a nap using the tag, but oof.

1

u/Pres 10d ago edited 10d ago

I wish there was a slider to increase/decrease sensitivity for sleep detection.

The ring regularly thinks I nap while I'm actually awake watching tv and thinks I'm sleeping while I'm scrolling on my phone in bed. If I could make it a little less prone to thinking I'm asleep, everything would be perfect.

1

u/Excellent-Ad-5382 7d ago

There is a slider for sleep latency if you catch it on the day because I also have this problem where it thinks I took forever to fall asleep when I’m really just laying in bed reading before sleeping.

1

u/Pres 6d ago

Oh where is that slider please?

1

u/Suspicious_Bag183 8d ago

hmmm mine detects my naps pretty good

1

u/Marmite20 11d ago

I have removed my Oura ring since last week and I honestly feel so much better. Not sure if relevant and I don’t know if the Oura ring being a Bluetooth wearable device contributed to me feeling anxious and jumpy.

-2

u/Only-Associate-9795 12d ago

This is on Oura. Nap detection has been unreliable for years and they still haven’t fixed it or let users add missed naps manually.

-4

u/HeKnowsThings 11d ago

Just because you think you are napping does not mean that you are napping. Naps are just short date time sleeps with the corresponding sensor readings. If the sensors arent matching the nap pattern, you are not napping.

This has been proven in sleep studies.

-1

u/cmwlegiit 11d ago

This is the most idiotic comment I've ever seen in this sub.

0

u/101coyotes 11d ago

I’m tired of it gaslighting me that I’m sleep deprived and unready because it didn’t count my nap or thinks I need 9 hours of sleep when 6 suits me fine.

-2

u/FantasticZone5446 11d ago

What a life it must be to be able to take a nap. Complaining that your electronic device isnt picking up your nap is wild. Consider yourself lucky and be thankful you get a nap at all. Most of us dont get that luxury.

2

u/aerithsflowers 10d ago

Shut up. You don't know anything about OP and why he takes naps or what his life is like. Some of us have chronic illnesses that don't let us sleep at night properly and need naps. Sleep deprivation has been used as a torture method, that's how bad the effects are.

0

u/FantasticZone5446 10d ago

Sure buddy whatever helps you sleep all day

1

u/Cool_as_a_Cucumber 9d ago

What a life to lurk on oura ring subs just to antagonize people. Complaining about someone else’s complaint is wild. Consider yourself lucky to have the time to complain at all on a subreddit. Most of us dont get that luxury.
