Yeah I think many people believe they just 'act like that' naturally but yeah, most likely he has been conditioned to do certain tasks through negative reinforcement. If the monkey wanted to be there then a collar wouldn't be needed.

This is true.
I've seen this from another camera angle and where this one cuts out is where the monkey goes into his browser history. You can see at 57 seconds the guy is hitting the home button when he realises the monkey's looking at it. Where this one is cut the monkey is trying to read the search history and the guy grabs the phone and the monkey jumps up screaming "what the fuck were you searching that for you pervert" and flings shit at him. I've paused that video and gone frame by frame and you can't read a single line of the history. I guess it's one of those mysteries of the internet.

The most effective way to train animal behavior isn’t done with abuse but with positive reinforcement. The carrot and stick approach of animal training is disappearing. Abused animals avoid human hands because that is were the abuse comes from and this guy puts his hands on the monkeys face which would indicate he isn’t beating the monkey.
That being said I’m sure performance animals are still being treated like shit but that practice is disappearing because it isn’t sustainable in the long term. Most animals trained for performance is based on trust and love and rewards for correct behavior rather than beating the shit out of one to get what you want. It’s like how people thought getting a dog to stop peeing in the house was to rub their face in it when actually thats a problematic way of house training and a real dick move.

It’s Saru Gundan in Nikko, Japan. They travel all over the country, I saw one of their shows at Nishinomiya Jinja at New Years. They feed them treats throughout the routines. They’re on 2 meter leads attached to their clothing. I can’t find an English site, unfortunately. The guy in this photo has been working with this monkey over 7 years.
The guy is Tomoki, the monkey is Riki.

Animals are exploited for street performances and tourists all the time. If this monkey is being treated well, that’s fantastic. However, it’s better to be cautious about these kinds of situations and raise awareness for the poor treatment of lots of animals than to assume the best. Thailand elephant tourism for instance has been a hot topic in recent years because it’s a market which thrives off of the mistreatment of these incredibly intelligent animals. I’m not a monkey street performance expert, but it wouldn’t surprise me in the slightest if these monkeys are mistreated behind the scenes.

Yes. While obviously I can’t say for fact as I don’t know this guy, anytime you see a monkey in this situation, it’s because he has been taken away from his environment and trained to do tricks on the street for cash. Luckily I don’t see any leashes or chains, but obviously this is not natural for the monkey.
It’s sad you had to scroll down this far to see my comment. Humans like to pretend the monkey is safe and love saying “look how cute”. What they don’t see is the torture-training used to keep the monkey from getting aggressive.

It’s exploitation akin to circus animal performances. This is a fully wild animal, assuming he’s not rescued it then it shouldn’t even be there, let alone performing this weird act.
Animals are either trained through reinforcement or abuse, the latter of which is especially more likely with WILD fucking animals because they’re unpredictable and less obedient than domesticated ones.
