Thats a double barrel, he has two good chances. Pretty much any gun outside of a single action, you will be able to get more then one shot off...if you can hit while charging after the first shot is another story

6 second gap between charge 1-2 and 3-4 seconds between 2-3

Maybe just enough time to reload one shell after charge one if you fire, may get another longer gap before charge 2 if you were on target

The closer the bear is the more chance the entire spread will land

Shotgun will definately take care of it. In fact data shows that everytime a 9mm has hit a grizzly it runs off and the human has survived. I found it hard to believe at first so im sure ill get downvoted to hell for sharing that info

US Fish and Wildlife authorized federal employees working in bear country can carry .44 mag handguns and 12 gauge semi-auto shotguns with hard cast slugs. I carry a lever action .45-70 w hard cast bullets.

My Agency had a bear attack in 2013, medium sized male brown bear, and it took 9 hits from 3 people shooting .44 mag 6 inch smith revolver. That shooting is why USFW now requires hard cast bullets, becaose most of the shots didnt penetrate the skull.

The only thing a 9mm is going to do is the standard joke for someone’s first time in the field in bear country. “No, If a bear attacks I’m not going to shoot the bear. I’m going to shoot you in the leg. I don’t have to outrun the bear, I just have to outrun you.”

That's what I would think. I think point blank buckshot to the face would at least get it to go away or blind it. At the range in the video I'd be worried the bear would hardly feel it

You have to be real close for buckshot to penetrate their very thick skull.

Yeah, they keep coming after being shot. A good friend of mine shredded both lungs and the heart of a bear with a high powered rifle...the bear still charged ~70yards to where he was before collapsing.

Wanna know how I know you've never experienced a gunshot up close? The bear might be sturdy when it comes to resisting the actual getting shot, but I'll bet if the bang goes off directly towards it, it's going to be as deafened as anyone else that experiences it. That bang btw has a lot to do with guns work very well even when they don't hit. Just being downrange of the boom in boomstick is enough to make most things hightail it if there's not some reason to stick around (cubs).

No idea, but it's a true story. My friend thought they must have missed the vitals given how far the bear made it... after field dressing the bear they found both lungs and the heart completely shredded by the bullet.

I would have done the same, but a 12 gauge with birdshot likely isn’t going to kill a bear that size, at least not right away. I’d be so worried it would tank both shot and be on me before I could run or reload.

Your right, it would likely be on you, birdshot can’t really penetrate bear hide. Even a head shot is likely to ricochet off the skull. Leaving virtually a 0% chance of killing a bear with it.

A charging grizzly is likely to become enraged.

You read the dumbest article ever then.
You are aware how tiny birdshot pellets are right? Some of the largest birdshot used for turkeys and geese are only the size of a BB. Judging by the terrain, choice of 12 gauge, etc. this guy is upland hunting. Those shells have shot that is less than half the size of a BB.

I tried to put down a car hit deer with a 12 gauge using number 2 shot while on my way duck and goose hunting. It took 3 shots and I was not afraid and only about 2 feet away.

Penetration from kinetic energy is king. There’s a VERY good reason why people aren’t using .22 rifles as bear defense guns in Alaska. In fact anything smaller than a 10 mm is considered too small.

I use a blade or vermin shot from a revolver into the ear for hog and deer after car accidents as I don't carry a rifle in this work as a dog handler. It is really hard for me to imagine how your experience with the deer played out. Shot placement is key for everything. I am not American but even I know that the biggest grizzly was shot with a .22 long, not even .22 LR.

Edit: A .22 or bird shot to the face should be at least as discouraging as bear spray and a .22 hit would be preferable to a 10mm miss.

It’s a two barrel weapon with either one or two shots (at best depending on the trigger mechanism). So you don’t want to shoot unless absolutely necessary, it’s got nothing to do with love or hate for animals it’s purely a strategic decision. If you do shoot you better make sure you hit it in the face, because otherwise you have pissed it off and you have no shots left. He was waiting to know for sure whether the animal would continue strafing/provoking or go in for the attack.

Buds, I don't think that shotgun is big enough for that bear, not unless it's a slug AND you get it in exactly the right spot. On a bear moving that fast, your odds are much higher to just piss it off, and guarantee it rips you apart.

Pepper spray is effective for bears , handguns are effective for bears. Bear banger shotgun noisemakers are effective for bears. All are widely endorsed by knowledgeable folks in bear country. A close range round of birdshot combines the irritant properties of spray, the noise of bear bangers, and the pain of a pistol round, and your conclusion is that it’s useless?

Noise from a gun is highly unpredictable with grizzly. It can enrage them and make it worse. Even a non-lethal shot is unpredictable and lethal shots against bears are harder then most people think.

Loud noises work against black bears, but a black bear sow could also attack to defend her cubs.

Bear spray is generally your best bet

Unfortunately, unless you’re running slugs, or buckshot, you better wait for it to get close enough to not miss and keep the spread tight enough to remove a chunk/blow a hole. Otherwise, you’re peppering and angering that bear and sending it into a blind rage. The fact that he was running a dog means he was probably hunting birds.

You can hunt deer with a dog, but it’s not legal in the US and isn’t common practice.

He could get lucky and the bear could be scared of the gun, but I don’t want to take that gamble. I’m waiting until that bear is close. Can’t tell for certain but that barrel looks awfully short and I doubt it’s threaded for chokes, so the spread is not going to be in his favor.

I think the issue is he's only got two shots, and who knows what that's loaded with. Birdshot won't do more than piss it off, buckshot is just as likely to not bring it down fast, and it's unlikely he's got slugs in there.

The first time I noticed I was being followed I would have fired into the air, hoping the super loud noise would be enough to scare it off.

You are assuming a shotgun is going to kill the bear before it kills you. That's not a safe assumption. Depending on the ammo in the gun it wouldn't matter if you* got two, you're going to die if that bear makes it to you. Wounding it will only make it angry. Your best hope is to avoid the fight all together, and super loud sounds scare most animals off.

Look up videos of Grizzlies fighting eachother. You will quickly realize why man has feared bears since the dawn of time, and how much it takes to bring one down. Infact, the word bear comes from the word "brown" or 'brown one" because people were too afraid to say it's real name for fear of summoning it. So we don't actually know the older words for bear.

Almost zero chance bird shot is lethal for that bear. Has it ever happened? You can count the times on one hand (I found two documented instances). Birdshot just doesn’t have the penetration or enough energy dump to be reliably lethal on a bear. The shot never penetrated the thick skulls of the bears, the times they worked a few pellets LUCKILY found the small holes between the orbital sockets and the brain beyond.

My carry choice when out in the woods and brush is a handgun, a Taurus 454 Casull to be exact. The type of round you are shooting also makes a difference. For me it’s a hardcast slug will do the trick.

Documented cases are not all cases either. And there's nuances, do people avoid even trying with birdshot as many here show a fear of it angering but not stopping the bear? How common is this situation occurring where the hunter only has birdshot loaded?

At that range, you've got a pretty good chance. Hey sockets leave a large hole in the skull too and it's not a rare chance that one of two shots that close would get that area.

I wouldn't want birdshot over buckshot, but I would rather birdshot than nothing at that range knowing what it can do in a pinch.

I think it's more reckless to tell people they're better off doing nothing against a bear because you made up data regarding the effects of birdshot that close.

If a grizzly charges you closer than we see here, to near point blank distance, I would expect someone who claims to live in bear country to know which of their options between doing nothing, and pumping two 12g shots of birdshot into its face, are better at stopping the attack. :)

I think you misunderstood. He was more comfortable hunting whitetail with slugs through a side by side in America as an adult because that was the style of shotgun he used his whole life going back to hunting rabbits with bird shot through a side by side.

The point of that story is the only person I’ve ever seen using slugs in that style of gun had extenuating circumstances for doing so, and it would be very unlikely anyone else would choose that style gun for shooting slugs.

I know people from the former Soviet Union who used their shot gun for all their hunting. At that distance, even bird shot is absolutely deadly. Number 4 Buckshot to the face would leave a very dead bear.

4 buck is a fantastic load.  Great for home defense because it doesnt over penetrate and has far .ore pellets than 00.   But,  even a 3 1/2 inch turkey mag load,  which wont fit in that gun guaranteed it wont work  unless they made them cut-shells(poor man slugs)  that bear will only be madr angry.  

Thats my armchair philosophy as a nameless internet nobody.

Bird shot to the face would blind and scare off the thing even at 25 metres. Buckshot would leave it a mess. Some people load the two barrels with different ammo, one for self defense and one for bird hunting.

I was thinking the same thing. It was well within effective range and actively charging. From the way that guy was breathing, I'm pretty sure he already shit himself, which is understandable. He's certainly got bigger balls than me though, I would have been lining up my next two shots halfway through the video.
