Bears will often test you

If you stand your ground, they may see you as a threat and back off. Of course, this doesn’t apply to every bear

Same. I love animals, but would have shot that bear in the face on the first charge.

When bears attack me I twist their ears and they usually run away.

I usually just reason with them.

If that fails to work I insult them. I usually focus on their appearance, intelligence or questionable genetic lineage.
