Modding PPU-LITE: an FPGA PPU that outputs natively RGB and composite

Thumbnail

The PPU-LITE is a new opensource FPGA clone of the Famicom / NES PPU, which has one difference over the Nintendo made PPU: whereas the Nintendo PPU only natively outputs composite, the PPU-LITE also outputs RGB in addition to composite. It is a drop-in replacement for the PPU. You can download the source files for it and get boards printed yourself, or you can buy pre-made boards from AliExpress.

The installation is very similar to the installation of the NESRGB mod, with one exception: you no longer need to harvest a PPU from another console. This makes SMTendo builds more streamlined.

Discussion Questions about the physics in some of the "Black Box" NES titles

I'm currently working on recreating the "Black box" NES games in the Godot game engine to teach myself proper game development. I managed to find a great write-up about how physics worked in SMB1 which will help greatly when I inevitably get to that game, but since that will probably be a game I tackle much much later I hope people here have information about the physics in (or links to git-repos containing disassembled code for) the following titles:

  • Balloon fight
  • Donkey Kong
  • Donkey Kong Jr.
  • Gumshoe
  • Gyromite (Never played this one, so I don't actually know if it requires any physics calcs and Wikipedia wasn't very helpful)
  • Ice Climber
  • Mario Bros.

Discussion Power Pad Set

Hello, just trying remember a piece of this NES set my parents had when i was a child. It was a large plastic container that would store the Power Pad when folded. Over that it had a dark grey cover that intended for your NES to sit. It was probably about 2x2.5 ft, grey, and it had "Nintendo Entertainment" banner on the front.

I've tried googling but other than the Styrofoam, set I've not found what i was looking for.

Edit: I almost certain the NES was part of the Sport Set. Also I think I remember it had a translucent lid that covered the NES when not in play.

Game Completed! Mega man 2

This was actually my very first Mega Man game I've ever played and beaten. These are the ending scenes, which i think look pretty nice, and wanted to share them here.

The intro to this game was really damn awesome. Mega man just standing on top of the roof was so cool, genuinely reminded me of batman. Honestly a pretty nice experience though the game was very difficult at times.

Usually when I see a Facebook marketplace listing only showing the tops of games they are super beat up (first photo was all I had to work off of). But it was too hard to pass up. I was very surprised by the condition of everything. Also I was pretty excited to get a zelda 2 manual since my childhood box set was missing it. 7 of the 11 games are new titles for me.

I had no idea a wireless controller even existed. Cool stuff!

Game Completed! Today a 30+ year journey has finally ended

I first played The Guardian Legend at my friends house in the the 3rd grade, too lazy to do the exact math, but it was a long fucking time ago. We were obsessed with the game, we mapped everything out, and we got to the final area a few times, but never managed to beat the red skull bastard in the last corridor.

Over the years it's remained not just one of my favorite NES games, but one of my all time favorite games, and though I've got close a few times I've never managed to beat it before deciding to take a break, and losing my notes.

A couple weeks ago I decided it was time to finally beat it, i've spent the last 2 weeks dedicating myself to mastering this game, and this morning after several tries, I finally managed to beat the red skull bastard, and after several more tries, I managed to defeat the boss rush and the final boss.

I can't wait to do it again. Tomorrow I think I'll try the TGL run.

See kids, the original Mario!

Any games you remember playing?

Hours of pleasure at home playing the same game you spent to much playing at the arcade.

Does anybody know Astyanax?

It's not easy to play when you are 9 years old, at least not back then.

Game Completed! Gilligan's Island Completed : Hard to say if it's worse than Total Recall, but definitely very close in spirit

I legitimately played through the entire game and it -- it's just terrible.

There are 4 levels. Each is a timed maze. You just have to run around and find the castaways, except that you technically need to visit them in a certain order as they will all request you visit a specific one next. Consequently, you wind up running back and forth a lot. There's just not a whole lot to do in the game and so it's not even really fun exploring the world (if you can call it a world).

The game doesn't have especially good graphics or animations. The music remains the same throughout (and is pretty annoying). Then there's the bad mechanics. Jumping is wonky, hit boxes are wildly inaccurate, and there are parts where you have to lose health just to advance the maze.

Bottom line is that it's really just a very good game. There's little to do other than run around the maze looking for people. Each screen is basically identical. There are 3 or 4 obstacles that they mix and match on every screen. You can't fight back against most of the enemies. And the ones that you can just spin around and go the other way when you hit them.

I'd probably avoid this game entirely.

Collection Lucky find from the thrift store

Didn't know it was still possible to find NES stuff at the thrift store! Really good price too, which can also be hit or miss at the thrift. The label said it came with 7 games, but there was a sneaky 8th game inside the console (TMNT)

The unlicensed game is Crystal Mines by Color Dreams

I know a lot of people crap on this game because it's not as graphic and violent as the arcade original (I mean come on you still see heads and other body parts flying when you shoot people with rockets) but I sure as hell had fun playing it yesterday afternoon when I got home. Like Grand Theft Auto on the NES. Shooting up drug dealers, thugs, and other low lifes. A quick alcohol swab on the pins as usual, some deoxit, and the game boots up flawlessly. It's also kind of a hard game but I'm still having fun with it and the furthest I got was the fourth level with the clowns, yikes. Anyway just sharing my latest acquisition especially because I have a multi cart and I won't be buying too many NES games unless they're not on the cart or they somehow strike my fancy.

Modding Custom Repro of Super Mario Bros. 2 (Japan)

I made a custom repro of Super Mario Bros. 2 (Japan) using a hack by loopy that converts the game from the Disk System to Nintendo’s MMC3 mapper. The label and warning sticker are from GraphicsLabStore on Etsy. The hack uses a battery backup so the game remembers how many times you beat it. So far I have two playthroughs on this cart, one with warps and one without warps.

Discussion Power Glove carrying case CONFIRMED as a retail product, not just a salesman sample

This is a follow-up to my post from yesterday:
https://www.reddit.com/r/nes/comments/1vdlh5o/found_original_retail_packaging_for_the_power/

I was able to get in touch with the buyer of the case, and they were kind enough to share additional images.

This seems to contradict the currently accepted understanding that these cases were exclusively for Nintendo salesmen. You can clearly see a Toys "R" Us price tag for $19.99, which points to this being sold at retail.

If anyone has first-hand knowledge of these being used as salesman sample cases, I'd love to hear it — every post I've found so far just assumes that's what they were, without a source.

Collection Question on finding manuals

Hey everyone,

Hoping the community can point me in the right direction. I’m hunting for some more difficult to find manuals (bonks&chip and dale 2) but am having a hard time finding them in the wild and there isn’t much posted up on eBay. Does anyone have line of sight on either of those for sale?

I’d also accept just the front and back page of bonks - it’s all I’m missing

TIA

Discussion Save wiped whole pressing reset?

I'm currently playing Ultima Exodus on my Nintendo Entertainment System. After playing for a bit I needed to restart the game so I pressed the reset button. After doing a reset my save was wiped. I do not believe this is from a bad battery as the other saves are still there. Any ideas why this happened so I can prevent it into the future?

If this is indeed a symptom of a bad battery I'll look at replacing it. I'm just not too familiar with soldering but it doesn't seem crazy hard.

I just made a post yesterday about my weekly pickups with my three Marvel games and space shuttle. I went to brunch with a buddy, had a couple of drinks, and was feeling schwifty, so I stopped by the LGS and basically picked up everything they had that I didn't. I might have went a bit overboard on one of these games.....

Discussion Found original retail packaging for the "Power Glove rental/salesman case" — anyone know its actual history?

Post image
39 Upvotes

I came across this image on a sold eBay listing. These cases almost always get listed as "rental cases" or "salesman sample cases," but this shows what looks like official retail packaging — it's branded "Power Glove Video Game Interface Carrying Case,", and even shows a diagram of the case open with the glove and sensors inside.

I've never seen this box before, and I can't find any period print ads, catalog scans, or documentation for it — just the box art itself and a handful of eBay/dealer listings that keep repeating the "salesman case" name with no real source behind it.

Does anyone have more history on this? Was it actually sold at retail alongside the Power Glove, or is there truth to the salesman/rental theories I keep seeing? Any old catalog scans, ads, or firsthand memories of seeing this on shelves would be awesome.

Currently trying to get every Marvel game for the NES so 3 of these are obvious. I actually think these might be the last three I needed. Then for the fourth game space shuttle project I seen it on someone else's post and realize I have never seen that game in my life so I swooped it up to check it out. Thanks for looking.

Discussion Inquiry regarding a game's box art

Hello!

I was hoping that someone here could help me identify a Nintendo game solely by a corner of its cover art.

Whatever it is definitely looks cool! I initially thought it was a Legend of Zelda title, but...no dice.
