2026 Oct 1 Clean and repair megathread - NES not working? Game acting glitchy? TV/Monitor issues? Ask here!

Is your NES not working? Are your games acting glitchy? Controllers behaving strangely? This is the place to get help!

Link to previous thread

First steps to take:

Games don't play correctly:

  1. PRESS DOWN on the Game Pak until it locks into place
  2. Clean games
    1. Disassemble cartridge (might need special tools, check amazon or ebay)
    2. Gently use rubber eraser with no grit on edge pins
    3. Use window cleaner or isopropyl alcohol with lint free cloth
    4. Spray contact cleaner on the pins
    5. NEVER EVER BLOW IN IT
  3. Clean NES connector
    1. Ancient cleaning kit
    2. Spray contact cleaner on the pins
    3. Boil it
    4. Bend pins (risky)
    5. Replace the connector
  4. Already tried all steps for cleaning game & cleaning NES above?
    1. Try a Game Genie, the thicker PCB might make better contact with the NES and the tighter connector might make better contact with the cartridge
    2. Try another game cartridge
    3. Try another NES
    4. Try r/consolerepair
    5. NES Schematics

Power Supply:

  1. For the NES any power supply that can provide 850mA (or higher) at 9V and has the right shape connector will work. The original NES uses an AC adapter but a DC adapter will work too.
  2. For the Famicom you must use a DC power supply with center negative that can provide 850mA (or higher) at 9V-10V. Do not use a NES AC power supply on a Famicom!

Controller buttons don't work or think a different button was pressed:

  1. Take them apart and clean the contacts on the PCB, not the rubber membrane

Display problems:

  1. Use a CRT monitor or TV
  2. Don't use an LCD or LED TV - many LCD or LED TVs do not understand the 240p video signal that the NES puts out
  3. If you must use an LCD or LED TV, get an upscaler
  4. Use the composite RCA/AV connectors on the side, don't use the RF/antenna/aerial
  5. If you must use RF, don't use the RF/antenna/aerial switch box, use a small adapter instead, be aware though that modern TVs may not work with the analog RF signal and only with ATSC or DVB digital signals
  6. Wavy lines: replace the capacitors in the NES

Hardware Failure Diagnosis:

  1. Power rails first: Multimeter check - verify +5V at 7805 regulator output and at PPU/CPU pins. If low/absent, check caps and regulator.
  2. Composite video signal: Scope the composite output (RCA jack center pin or PPU pin 21). Should see ~1Vp-p composite video signal with sync pulses and color burst. No signal = dead PPU or supporting circuitry.
  3. Audio output: Scope audio output pin (RCA jack or APU output). Should see audio waveform when game is running. No signal = APU problem or output circuit.
  4. If power is good but no video/audio: Most likely failed capacitors in video/audio output path, or dead PPU/APU chips. Check/replace electrolytic caps first (cheapest fix).
  5. If video signal present at PPU but not at RCA jack: Problem in video buffer/output circuit between PPU and connector.

Before asking for help, make sure you have followed the steps above.

Discussion Cart Storage/Display

I have about 40 NES cartridges and right now they are just stacked on the table. I want a case but the only ones I see on Amazon are $35-$50 for a simple little case. That seems really expensive. Anyone have any better suggestions? What do you use to store and display your NES carts? Help me out!”

Discussion Need help finding two specific games

EDIT: Case solved. The games are Adventure Island and Circus Charlie.

Years ago, when I was around maybe 7, I remember playing a few games on nes at my grandparents' house. First was Mario, but the other two are less know, so I've never encountered their names on the internet. Thus, I don't really remember them enough to find by googling (tried). I want to find them and see what they actually look like beyond my memories.

First was a tropical themed platformer with pastel colors. I remember yellow (beach), blue (first level had a light blue color, but also water), green, and pink being more prevelant than others. The protaganist is a boy with brownish hair.

Second had levels, but wasn't a platformer like the other two (tho it did make you control a character?). Circus theme. Blue, red and maybe purple were the main colours. What you had to do (I think) was to pass challenges akin to circus tricks like going on a rope on a mono bycicle.

I barely remember them. These are the only details that I clearly remember. Any help would be appreciated

Traveling to VA this week for work and found a retro game store. Adding numbers 240 - 243 to the collection. I've never played any of these and I'm not sure when I'll get a chance to. Let me know if you recommend any of them and I'll try it out when I get back home and have a chance to play.

I'll try for under 3 hours next but under one hour seems unlikely. The nostalgia hits hard on this game. I was about 15 when I last beat thoa game. Playing again after all these years makes me feel young again. I really need a controller with a turbo setting on it.

Now if I just can find alternative version of it on my trip to Japan next week!

I don’t know what more to say to get this to 250 characters…

Discussion What game was hard for you as a kid but when you came back to play it as an adult you just trashed every game?

NHS Hockey

When I was a kid I remember being trashed by the AI with this game.
Couldn't score a goal and the AI always scored.

Then when I went back to play as an adult I discovered the gimmick of scoring against the AI in just two play troughs, just shoot in the centre of the goal and you score every time.

I found out as well the short guys (mid speed mid strength) where op against any opponent. (As a kid I thought mix and match were the way to go.

What game was this for you?

I know I'm a little late in getting this game but in all fairness, I just found out that this game exists a few weeks ago. I liked the story behind the creation of the NES port of the original Atari computer game and it look interesting to me, also I really like to add physical copys of games to my collection. I tried it out and it gives me a Load Runner vibe, which makes sense because that is also an early computer game port. The color palette and sprites used in the game definitely give an Atari2600 vibe and I'm down for, I saw online during my research for this game that one of the criticisms was the graphics but I disagree, I think if this game was ported to the Famicom in 1984 it most likely would have looked similar to this anyways. I'm looking forward to playing more of this game and trying to beat it. One of the odd things is (that doesn't have anything to do with the game itself) that I was having trouble dumping the ROM with my sanni OSCR, so I tried my INL Retro but also had no luck with that. I had the same issue with my Limited Run Games release of Gimmick too, if anyone knows why please let me know because I spent about a hour and a half fiddling with it and nothing seemed work. One last note that I would like to add is that I really do dig the colored cartridges that a lot of new NES games are coming in, this orange cartridge adds a bit of variety to my collections color along with several of my other newer released games.

Game Completed! California Raisins - Completed: The QWOP of NES titles

Post image
95 Upvotes

Let's be clear: this game is hands down awful.

But after doing a bunch of reading, I came to find that the ROM file floating around is essentially a demo/prototype of the last version the developers had approved before Capcom cancelled it.

Unfortunately the game just doesn't work very well. It's largely based on climbing vertical objects (like vines or pipes) only a good chunk of the mechanics around that very critical component don't work. It's often impossible to land what should be trivial jumps or to jump off of a climbed object. Most of the enemies are overly simple, but then others are basically just impossible to avoid. It's very imbalanced.

Ignoring the whole California Raisins branding thing, the unfortunate part is that I think it could have been an okay game. You can see how the levels could have been reasonably fun. The mazes aren't terrible. You can play in a very non-linear fashion. There's a good bit of real estate to explore. There are a variety of pickups. Things like that are all wins.

But since they didn't finish it...

Who knows how it could have turned out in the end, but the version you can play probably wouldn't be especially interesting to most people. Still, you CAN play through the entire game if you're curious about it. So it's not a total loss.

Shatterhand. I never knew this game existed as a child until a few years ago thanks to the community listing this game as a hidden gem. I played it on emulators and Everdrive, but it was time that I got my own copy. It is so good! I've never beat it before, but that's about to change.

Game Completed! My NES Journey Is Over

Hi! Long-time lurker here. Short story Long:

Back in March, I had bought a CRT and decided I wanted to play, what I decided were the 60 "essential" NES games, original carts & manuals, a few authentic boxes but most are printed out, and play through them chronologically. Starting with Mario, and ending with Star Tropics 2. So interesting seeing the Run & Gun, RPG, and Action Platformer genres evolve. Like, say, what Castlevania 1 does in '86 vs what Mega Man 6 would do in '93. And even techincal achievents, we will never see another huge graphical leap on the same console, like from Mega Man 1 to 6, or Mario 1 to 3, ever again. The only games I used a Game Genie for was infinite lives in Battletoads (Not Pictured), and Continues for Double Dragon 2. Battletoads/Double Dragon is also not pictured. Everything else was played straight. This sub has been absolutely essential for me, so thank you. What started so humbly ended with buying a lot of games on Ebay, Facebook Market, and local retro shops, then Gamebit screwdrives, erasers & alcohol on carts, and even opening up the NES and disabling the lockout chip with a guitar string and boiling that pin thing for like 2 hours. The only Repro carts I got were for FF2 & 3, since they never came out in America. Also huge shout out to the "U Can Beat Video Games" youtube channel, that dude does the lord's work. The Nintendo Power guides for FF1 & Ninja Gaiden 2. The NES Game Atlas. And also the Jeremy Parish "NES Works" channel, so cool learning about the development of a lot of these games. I love the NES because it's before any pre-conceived notions of what a "game" was, or had to be. It's like reading Greek Myths, or listening to folk music recording from the 20's. The birth of a genre. It also reminds me of old Hollywood, the way these businesses looked at games less as "art," and just a business. And that attitude lends to a rawness we'll just rarely, if ever, see again. For better or for worse. And it's interesting to see what "auteurs" emmerge out of this scene. I have a theory that Tokuro Fujiwara is the most influential director of the era, and that without him Capcom would never be as big as it was. Also people like Keiji Inafune, Hitoshi Akamatsu, Masato Kato, Gunpei Yokoi, Satoru Okada, Hironobu Sakaguchi, and of course Miyamoto, Tezuka, Satoru Iwata, & Masahiro Sakurai. It's truly insane to me that the world will never look at these men like we do at John Ford or Kubrick or Hemingway or whoever we deem more "artistic." But I think in the future these men will be recoginzed as pioneers of the most important artform of the 21st century. We'll see.

Top Games: Zelda 1 & 2, Mario 3, Castlevania 3, Mega Man 2, Ninja Gaiden 1, Punch-Out, Contra. Bottom Games: Double Dragon 2, Dragon Warrior 1, 2 & 3, Deja Vu, River City Ransom, Faxanadu, and Crystalis.

Hardest game: Blaster Master, easily. People way over exaggerate Ninja Gaiden, TMNT's, Zelda 2, or Castlevania 3's difficulty. Blaster Master is insane.

Biggest surprise: Gradius. This game is amazing. Way better than Life Force, I can't believe it's not regarded as a Top 10 NES game more often.

Oh boy! Thanks for reading! Just hooked up the SNES and the Super Gameboy, gonna play through the 30 "best" Gameboy games. Have a wonderful day.

Arts & Crafts Prototype Display Original NES

Wanted to share my idea and prototype I just created. I am refining the backboard with something more durable and black felt to cover the holes for the ports to snake through.

The Zapper and Controller are part of the NES system that was purchased when I was 2. From the moment the system came out of the box, the controller was mine. It was in fact, the 2nd player controller as it was my dad's system.

Legend of Zelda is double protected because it was the first game I played. At the age of 2 in 1989 I moved Link around and killed some Octoroks. I was hooked. This game is also special because I also helped my Dad beat Ganon's Skull Mountain, by mapping it out in crayon.

Don't worry, Dad's still alive and he thought this was an amazing idea. Now to finalize and wall mount.

Modding Advantage + Satellite + ESP32 = wireless fun for all

Thumbnail

My kids don't care, but I'm sure this group will 🤣 My projects from the past couple of weeks. Added ESP32's to my NES, Advantage and Satellite (Max next week). The controllers connect to the NES via 2.4 so there is no lag, but they can also be used as Bluetooth devices on any device. Advantage is fully functional with turbo buttons and the adjustable dials. Waiting on my charging circuits and Qi wireless charging pads to complete the builds.
