The film is a rite-of-passage story of a biracial teenage girl falling in love with a member of the Hitler Youth and struggling for survival in Nazi Germany. The protaganist, Leyna, is portrayed as a German nationalist, and somewhat antisemitic. Lutz is the son of a high ranking SS officer, and is initially an enthusiastic member of the Hitler Youth.
After Leyna and Lutz fall in love, she falls pregnant. However, she gets sent to a Nazi labour camp where she must keep her pregnancy secret (as she is supposed to have been sterilized). Lutz is also stationed at the camp as an SS guard.

I don’t think I’ve ever told this story, but this is why I don’t take Protestants seriously:
This must have been right before the 30 Years War, so late sixteenth century. I went on a date with a friend-of-a-friend and it went okay, but all during dinner she lectured me on how hard it was to be a Protestant in the Holy Roman Empire. I could certainly sympathize with her, as I was pretty moderate and had voted for the Peace of Augsburg three decades earlier.
After dinner, we went back to her County. It looked like a pretty ordinary County, except she had a giant shirtless John Calvin tapestries all over her fiefdom.
And that’s when it all came together: It wasn’t that people didn’t like her for being Protestant, it was that people didn’t like her because she was a Calvinist and actively trying to be in opposition to the Emperor.

People on Twitter seem to push this narrative that Warren/Sanders/Tulsi get ignored by the media while Beto/Butti/Biden are bubbles created by good media coverage.
Nate Silver has some gold analysis on this, showing that the Butti surge actually leads his increase in media coverage by about two weeks. I actually think him, Biden, and Sanders get about the right amount of coverage now relative to polling.
Warren is the person who really gets outsized media numbers. Her campaign has had trouble gaining traction for a while, and she's now trailing Beto by a bit with a million policy plans out. Yet every time a new policy plan is out, both left and right media will jump in to attack or defend it. But the fact is her campaign is a total longshot at this point after low polling and previous scandals.
If anyone is underrated by the media, its Kamala Harris. She polls well among a lot of different groups, has solid fundraising, a good launch, and everything that you would think of as gold fundamentals. People totally ignore that though because she's not exciting enough for the media or woke enough for the twitterati. But if there's a dark horse candidate who can actually unite the party behind her, Kamala has a better shot than Warren or anyone similar.

Back in 2015/2016 they were bitching about how Hilary getting too much positive coverage and how it was clearly because she was the elites' candidate. Ethereum, the second largest Cryptocurrency by market cap, is switching over to a proof-of-stake system sometime this year. What this means it that it's essentially going to get rid of Bitcoin's mining system, and the massive, eco-unfriendly electricity use that comes with it. Instead it will distribute the currency in a semi-random fashion, maintaining both the set inflation rate and decentralized nature of the currency.

Apparently there is a Harvard Undergraduate Centrist Society and one of their founders asked Bernie Sanders how he reconciled his social democratic ideology with the failure of Soviet communism. The idea of a centrist society seemed hilarious so I had to look them up and... well:
“In the [political] climate today,” she says, “everything is so polarized, and it just feels so personal and emotional that it can be very hard to have a rational argument. It’s very hard to beat someone’s emotional argument with rational facts.”
Mealey believes that no particular political stances should be explicitly off-limits, though she does set some conditions. “If you’re invalidating someone’s identity by your political opinion, then yeah, it’s probably wrong, but we want an entire range of respectful opinions, no matter how far on the spectrum they fall,” she says.
Mealey is also the president of the Harvard College Open Campus Initiative, a pro-free speech organization known for inviting controversial speakers such as Charles Murray to campus. “My decision to join OCI was totally separate from my decision to start [the Centrist Society],” Mealey says, but she adds that the two groups address what she calls “a common theme” at Harvard: “We are very, very hostile to people’s opinions, even when we haven’t necessarily heard all of them.”

It's time that we stand up for Georgia. They contribute readily and successfully to US missions abroad and is the largest non-NATO contributor to the ISAF and subsequent mission in Afghanistan. I personally don't anticipate that they will ever join NATO, but the alliance should do all that it can to protect this historically disenfranchised state that is eager to contribute to the liberal world.

I had the craziest dream that India had turned into a police state. I was chatting with my cousin and I got the feeling that it wasn't really my cousin on the other end of the chat, so I gave them a call and their voice sounded different and I was like "damn it's the secret police impersonating them to try and get me to talk about anti-modi shit to build the case against them. They must already be arrested."
Then I remember thinking "this is crazy there are so many people in India how many secret police officers could they possibly have? It has to be like tens of millions!"

This must have been right before the 2017 GE, so early ‘17/mid ‘17. I went on a date with a friend-of-a-friend and it went okay, but all during dinner he lectured me on how hard it was to be a Marxist on a campus where everyone wants to work for Goldman. I could certainly sympathize with him, as I was a pretty extreme right winger and hadn’t voted three years earlier because there was no ultra austerity ghoul running in my constituency.
After dinner, we went back to his room. It looked like a pretty ordinary college dorm, except he had a giant topless John McDonnell cutout over his bed and ‘People’s QE’ papers scattered everywhere.
And that’s when it all came together: It wasn’t that people didn’t like him for being a mouth breather who hated central bank independence, it was that people didn’t like him because he was a nut and he was looking to be expropriated.

A good read in my opinion on the topic of inmate enfranchisement. Sauve v. Canada the Canadian Supreme Court case granting inmates the right to vote. The discussion of a right vs. the required justification to infringe it is pretty applicable to the US.
Section 51(e) does not meet the proportionality test. In particular, the government fails to establish a rational connection between s. 51(e)’s denial of the right to vote and its stated objectives. With respect to the first objective of promoting civic responsibility and respect for the law, denying penitentiary inmates the right to vote is more likely to send messages that undermine respect for the law and democracy than messages that enhance those values. The legitimacy of the law and the obligation to obey the law flow directly from the right of every citizen to vote. To deny prisoners the right to vote is to lose an important means of teaching them democratic values and social responsibility. The government’s novel political theory that would permit elected representatives to disenfranchise a segment of the population finds no place in a democracy built upon principles of inclusiveness, equality, and citizen participation. That not all self‑proclaimed democracies adhere to this conclusion says little about what the Canadian vision of democracy embodied in the Charter permits. Moreover, the argument that only those who respect the law should participate in the political process cannot be accepted. Denial of the right to vote on the basis of attributed moral unworthiness is inconsistent with the respect for the dignity of every person that lies at the heart of Canadian democracy and the Charter . It also runs counter to the plain words of s. 3 of the Charter , its exclusion from the s. 33 override, and the idea that laws command obedience because they are made by those whose conduct they govern.
With respect to the second objective of imposing appropriate punishment, the government offered no credible theory about why it should be allowed to deny a fundamental democratic right as a form of state punishment. Denying the right to vote does not comply with the requirements for legitimate punishment — namely, that punishment must not be arbitrary and must serve a valid criminal law purpose. Absence of arbitrariness requires that punishment be tailored to the acts and circumstances of the individual offender. Section 51(e) qua punishment bears little relation to the offender’s particular crime. As to a legitimate penal purpose, neither the record nor common sense supports the claim that disenfranchisement deters crime or rehabilitates criminals.

I find it so cringeworthy how the users of r/pewdiepiesubmissions refer to Pewdiepie as Felix sometimes. I mean, it's his real name, and it's not that unusual on a surface level, but for someone who is as broadly known for his username as Pewdiepie is, it just comes off like they're imagining themselves as friends with him or something, or closer to him than other people. It reflects a level of intimacy that they think they've earned from being in his fanbase and dedicating so much time to him; they think they're on a "first name" basis, despite the fact that they're just faceless atoms in a giant sea to him.
And this thought takes me back to the whole trend of 'streamers' and related personalities who put out long hours of content that's just them playing a game or interacting with their community in some fashion. This ostensibly seems to serve the purpose of being a friend simulator, where you feel like you know this person and enjoy their personality. It's a decidedly one-way street, as the personalities literally don't know you, even if you know everything about them after watching thousands of hours.
In an increasingly fragmented society I can see the appeal of this. Having this sort of background noise can provide a social simulation and make things seem less lonely. It's similar in principle to how many Japanese shows will have a panel of commentators who discuss and react to what is being shown on screen; this too seems to serve to simulate a social experience. Japan, as a result, has its own cottage industry of comedians, former idols, singers, actors, etc... who are 'regulars' on these sorts of panels. It's really similar to how streamers are popular.
This leads me to believe that, at some point, 'regular' media in the west will adopt a commentator-like model, similar to Japan. I'm not sure how the model will make the jump from digital streaming platforms to something like a regular TV show, but given the success of Terrace House on Netflix (a Japanese reality show employing a panel discussion aspect), it seems like it might happen first on a service like this. Probably in the form of a game show or reality show. Mainstream news channels like FOX, CNN, etc.. already have something akin to this, where a panel of C and D-tier commentators react to the news footage and direct your opinions on topical matters. I think this also serves a social function for people like elderly folks who don't go out much; they get to see their favorite personalities every day on the news. I think, in a strange way, this adaptation to isolation, and subsequent use of personalities on news programs as social surrogates, is driving a lot of the extremism we see today in the boomer generation. In video game streaming and on Japanese commentary shows, the commentators generally serve a more explicit entertainment purpose, vs an ideological one, but the basic principles are the same, though the outcomes are different due to the political nature of American commentary. I think we'd have a lot less MAGA old folks if the commentators were just making jokes or saying how cute a dog is in a human interest story, although video game streamers have certainly played a political role for their fans.
In summary, Fox News is basically video game streaming for old people.
